Sometimes a fantasy comic appears, hits the ground running and blow your minds with a gauntleted fist, and 'Godhark' was a book that did that. So this week the ACP crew sat down with its creator Sean Manaloto to talk about the creation of the book, his artwork, influences, epic storytelling and the pure love of the comics medium. From talking about creating during a pandemic, collaborating with your partner, heavy metal, video games and the comics scene in the Philippines, its another awesome conversation with a creator everyone should look out for. All that and a bunch of brilliant comics to check out, a discussion about the joy of good comics and an insight into the comics scene in Riga! Great stuff to check out: Godhark, Sean Manaloto, Komiket, Gumroad, Hal Weaver, cus comics, London Comic Mart, Baltimore Comic Con, Western Noir Tales, American Nature 3, The Santos Sisters, DUI#4, Cabrisini and Geek Girl, Mahoneys, Worry Wart, Nick Bryan, Lane Lloyd, Grim Scary Tales: Echoes of the Damned, You're the Centre of Attention, Gina Wynbrandt, Black Demon Tales: Mechanika, The Phantom, Mad Cave Comics, Skinbreaker, David Finch, Robert Kirkman, The Shadow Planet, Image Comics

Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller drive up to the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, IL to talk with legendary comics painter Alex Ross. Known for Marvels, Kingdom Come, and decades of redefining superhero realism, Ross reflects on his career trajectory, his education at the American Academy of Art, his influences (from Neal Adams to Dave McKean), his early breaks with Now Comics and Leo Burnett storyboarding, and his transition into large-scale mural projects for Marvel and DC. The conversation ranges from comics history, realism in superhero depictions, variant cover economics, the physicality of superheroes, to America's appetite for dystopian narratives versus a return to the “pure Superman.” Ross is candid, funny, and deeply reflective about the comics medium, painting, and storytelling. Today, we explore the career of Sweeney Boo, from studying graphic design in southwest France to becoming a sought-after artist and writer in mainstream comics. We discuss her early work as a letterer and colorist for French publishers and her bold decision to move to Canada in 2015 to pursue her comic book dreams. This week on Collecting Issues, we're diving headfirst into the dense, brutal, and brilliant world of 20th Century Men, the six-issue epic from Deniz Camp, Stipan Morian, and Image Comics. It's an alternate history where the Cold War got much, much hotter, fought with super-soldiers, giant mechs, and broken ideals in the mountains of Afghanistan.WARNING: This is a full-spoiler discussion! We highly recommend you read 20th Century Men #1-6 before listening. Go on, get out of here! Scram! Taste the wilderness... and then come back for the listens.Join us as we unpack this "impenetrable but so worth it" modern classic. We dissect Deniz Camp's complex, non-linear narrative that jumps through time and perspectives, comparing his style to legends like Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, and Grant Morrison. We also explore Stipan Morian's stunningly varied—and sometimes jarring—artwork, from Frank Frazetta-esque battle scenes to surreal, Bill Plympton-inspired visuals. Is this the best comic of 2025? Is it a spiritual successor to Watchmen? And after all the propaganda, war crimes, and failed utopias, we ask the eternal question: War, huh? What is it good for?Tune in to hear our thoughts on:The Unholy Trinity: A deep dive into the core characters: the crumbling Soviet ideal of The Iron Star, the brutal American imperialism of President Goode, and the human cost embodied by Azra.Artistic Chaos: Why Stipan Morian's shifting art styles are both the comic's greatest strength and its most challenging feature.Deconstructing History: How the comic uses superheroes to explore the real-world horrors and myth-making of the Soviet-Afghan War.Legendary Influences: We discuss the heavy shades of Planetary, The Authority, and Watchmen that run through this series. The Best and Worst of Humanity: From the terrifying super-soldier Six Bill to the tragic journalist Kyril, we break down the unforgettable supporting cast.If you love politically charged, artistically ambitious comics that challenge you at every turn, this is an episode you can't afford to miss.Time Stamps:00:00 Introduction to 20th Century Men00:49 Comic Book Spoilers Ahead!02:46 The Complexity of War in Comics12:07 Art and Storytelling in 20th Century Men16:32 Character Analysis: Heroes and Anti-Heroes27:37 The Symbolism of the Collected Man33:56 Side Stories and Paradise34:10 Azra's Practical Paradise34:56 John Rambo's Disruption35:04 Thomas Goode's American Supremacy36:09 Time Jumps and Narrative Techniques39:13 Art and Visuals in Comics43:15 Character Perspectives and Artistic Styles50:54 The Human Toll of War55:41 Modern Political Crises and Myth Making01:07:54 Spooky Season RecommendationsFollow the Podcast:Join the Discord and read alongRead Our SubstackFollow us on InstagramFollow us on TiktokWatch us on Youtube Hosted on Acast. Following the triumph of Marvels and from the ashes of a proposed sequel that fell apart, Kurt Busiek launched Astro City with Brent Anderson on interior art and Marvels collaborator Alex Ross on covers and character designs. On the series' 30th anniversary, we look at the complicated development of the series and its first six stories. We also ask some conceptual questions. Should Astro City be considered part of the larger superhero deconstructionist movement of the Iron Age, or something else entirely? Are the series' familiar-but-different superheroes “analogues” or “archetypes”? Is there such a thing as including too many Easter eggs? And what's the difference between “superheroes in the real world” and Astro City?Discussed in this episode: the first volume of Kurt Busiek's Astro City #1-6, published by Image Comics (as originally reprinted in the Life in the Big City trade paperback and other subsequent collected editions)The municipality of Astro City is probably supported with robust and progressive property taxes, but our podcast relies on listener support at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Comic Book Creator and LEGEND! (Recorded live at Tucson Comic Con Sunday, August 31, 2025) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Crow, Heavy Metal Magazine Born in Portland, Maine in 1962 Kevin Eastman began drawing at a very young age, copying children's books, and reading comics. Inspired by master storyteller Jack Kirby, and later by self-publishing creators Richard Corben, creating his own characters and comics became an obsession. Born in Portland, Maine in 1962 Kevin Eastman began drawing at a very young age, copying children's books, and reading comics. Inspired by master storyteller Jack Kirby, and later by self-publishing creators Richard Corben, creating his own characters and comics became an obsession. In the late 70's and early 80's, self-published “Mini Comics” became a main artistic outlet, and while soliciting illustration work from local fanzines in Northampton Massachusetts, he met like-minded creator Peter Laird and the partnership studio, Mirage Studios was formed. Less than a year later in the middle of a late-night drawing session, Eastman doodled a new character he dubbed a “Ninja Turtle” to make Laird laugh—several sillier sketches and a final drawing of four characters later “Eastman and Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” had officially entered the universe! Self-published in May of 1984 the first issue sold out of its 3000 copies overnight and quickly became a fan favorite. Catching the eye of Merchandising Agents and Hollywood Producers, Eastman and Laird maintained full control of their creations while guiding them through Toy Licensing, TV Series adaptation, as well as Feature Films, and by early 1990 the TMNT's were number one in all three categories. In between TMNT projects, Eastman launched a creator friendly publishing company, “Tundra Publishing” where projects like “The Crow” “From Hell” “Madman” and “Understanding Comics” first flourished, as well as purchased and published the world renowned “Heavy Metal Magazine” for more than twenty-five years. In 2020 based on an original 1987 concept by Kevin and Peter, Kevin adapted and launched The Last Ronin with longtime TMNT Writer/Co-Writer Tom Waltz. The epic tale quickly became the TMNT publishing event of the decade, both a critical success, and a New York Times Best Seller. The series continued with The Last Ronin: Lost Years in 2023 and 2024The Last Ronin II: Re-Evolution. When not having way too much fun writing and drawing on new TMNT projects, he launched a new maxiseries with Image Comics entitled, Drawing Blood as well as companion limited series the Radically Rearranged Ronin Ragdolls, with co-creator David Avallone, and artists Ben Bishop and Troy Little. Thanks to “THE BEST FANS ON THE ENTIRE PLANET!” according to Eastman, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continue to find their way into the hearts and imaginations of kids, large and small more than four decades later. Cowabunga! In 2025 Kevin, his wife Courtney and Team Eastman will be visiting comic conventions and signings around the world, ensuring they are always accessible and able to connect with fans as we all continue to Shellebrate the awesome legacy of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In this candid second half of our talk, Greg Rucka opens up about why he walked away from DC Comics during earlier eras, and how those frustrations with co-writers and editors caused him to have serious personal issues and leave in digust to focus on creator owned projects. But it's not all doom and gloom — Greg is genuinely excited about his latest DC work, the upcoming Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League, with his usual collaborator Nicola Scott. Greg makes it clear how much better the current editorial regime feels, compared to the past.We also dive into Greg's prose side, where he's just finished a brand-new Atticus Kodiak novel ready to hit publishers, and he teases the possibility of new Queen & Country stories on the horizon. He addresses the current state of the book market. On top of that,Greg shares fresh updates on Lazarus, his long-running Image Comics series with Michael Lark, and reflects on how that world continues to devolve. It's a mix of hard truths, exciting projects, and the kind of thoughtful perspective you only get from a creator like Greg Rucka and a show like Word Balloon

What visual tone were you aiming for with Everything Dead & Dying? The book has been described as The Last of Us meets Yellowstone. How did you strike a balance between horror, western, and emotional drama without tipping too far into genre cliché?How did you both approach the undead in this world? Are they metaphors, monsters, or something else entirely? The series clearly explores themes of love, loss, and survival. Was there a particular moment or relationship in the book that was especially personal or meaningful for either of you to write or draw?Tate, this marks your Image Comics debut. What freedoms—or challenges—did working at Image bring compared to your previous work in the DC and BOOM! Worlds? You're working with an amazing lineup of variant artists, including Sean Phillips and Joshua Hixson. How involved were you in curating that roster, and what do those covers add to the tone of the series? With just five issues to tell the story, how are you approaching pacing and world-building to ensure it still hits with emotional and thematic weight? If you had to live with one undead pop culture character as your roommate—zombie, vampire, ghost, whatever—who would it be and why? Bonus points if you argue over the dishes.

And now a reposting of the first part of this rambling and too brief history of Image Comics, the comic book company that challenged Marvel & DC's dominance in the American comic book marketplace.
Early on in Tillie Walden's Clementine: Book Three, which represents the concluding chapter in her The Walking Dead trilogy, an expectant mother grabs our hero's arm and gasps through the pain, “It'll never end.” She's so right, and we should all take those words to heart. Pain is never done with you. Run if you care to, but the worst life has to offer will always find you. The trick is acknowledging your relationship with it and fortifying yourself as a means of surviving until you don't. Pain never ends. You will. Find your community and love them while you can. We've adored Tillie Walden's comics for quite some time. One of our earliest episodes was a deep dive exploration of her exceptional science fiction teen romance, On a Sunbeam. Her work is deeply personal, and Clementine: Book Three is no exception, with the narrative extending from recent events in her life. In today's podcast, we dig into the Clementine trilogy with Tillie Walden. We discuss how she finds herself in Clementine and how Clementine may find herself in Tillie. We talk about The Walking Dead franchise, how Clementine evolves from the Telltale game, and why horror is the most emotionally honest genre. Clementine: Book Three is written, drawn, and lettered by Tillie Walden. Grey Tones by Cliff Rathburn. All three books are now available from Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics. Follow Tillie Walden through her website and Instagram. This Week's Sponsors We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. They're constantly snagging rockstar creators like James Stokoe, Tom Scioli, Andrew MacLean, Louie Joyce, Jake Smith, Eric Powell, Rosie Knight, and Oliver Ono to unleash their talents on cinema's most significant kaiju universe. And this July, IDW is taking their Godzilla books to the next level by introducing the Kei-Sei era. This new shared universe line begins with Godzilla #1 by Tim Seeley and Nikola Čižmešija. There's a new Godzilla design, a mess load of Kaiju antagonists…and protagonists - plus, superpowered human characters. Your heroes return to discuss Rook: Exodus! "Hundreds of years from now, the man known as Rook was once a simple farmer who fled the crumbling Earth for a new life. He traveled to the planet Exodus, a terraformed world where all of nature, including its imported animal population, was completely controlled by humans called Wardens. But when Exodus's world engine failed, the Wardens' power fell into the wrong hands, creating chaos and mass evacuation…for those who could afford it. The rest, like Rook, must scavenge for an escape vessel as the war for control of what's left of Exodus begins."In this episode we chat about fantastic concept for the book, debate our favorite Wardens, and break down the story. As always you'll hear us cover the History of the Creators, Favorite Lines, The Art Awards, and Adaptation Alley. Rook: Exodus is written by Geoff Johns, art by Jason Fabok, colored by Brad Anderson, lettered by Rob Leigh, and published by Image Comics.Follow ComiClub on Instagram @ComiClubPodcast.ComiClub is hosted by Blaine McGaffigan and Adam Cook.

The great thing about the zombie sub-genre is that every time you think it's played out, a new creative team arrives to inject some fresh life into it. Everything Dead and Dying, the new Image Comics series by Tate Brombal and Jacob Phillips, imagines the last living farmer on the planet, sitting satisfied on his homestead, surrounded by his dead and rotting loved ones. The corpses he once called friends and family are trapped in the routine of their last living day, performing mundane tasks such as delivering the mail and receiving a bedtime story. If he squints hard enough, the farmer, Jack Chandler, can soldier on as if each new day is as good as the old ones were. Everything Dead and Dying is a deliciously, satisfyingly sad zombie story, and like the best entries in this sub-genre, it has a lot on its mind and heart. The first issue is easily one of our favorites of the year, and demands attention from those already fond of walkers or those who'd rather avoid them. Brombal and Phillips have constructed a perfect zombie gateway comic. Having recently visited the Monroeville Mall in Pittsburgh, the site where George R. Romero shot the classic Dawn of the Dead, we were eager to chat with Tate Brombal and Jacob Phillips about what drew them to this particular story engine. What do the undead offer us as metaphors, especially in a culture so near its own global catastrophe? On this week's podcast, we discuss their connection to zombies, why they previously never considered contributing to the sub-genre, and how Jacob Phillips built an entire town from scratch. Final Order Cutoff for Everything Dead and Dying#1 is Today (8/11), so call your comic book shop asap so you won't miss out on reading this story when it arrives on September 3rd. Make sure you're following Tate Brombal on Blue Sky and Instagram, as well as Jacob Phillips on Blue Sky and Instagram.
