Every October, New York Comic Con (NYCC) rolls around. Normally, they don't acknowledge their proximity to the spooky season, but this year, as crowds reached pre-pandemic sizes, they embraced Halloween. Cosplay took on a more deliciously grisly vibe, and we found ourselves feeling more ghoulish than usual, too. The conversations we sought ventured into bloodier tales of both good and bad natures. Michael Walsh joined us in the Tiny Onion booth to explain the game design that birthed Exquisite Corpses, and how such play was influenced by his recent stint on Frankenstein. We met artist Tristan Jones upstairs in the infamous “Butter Corner,” where the IDW Publishing booth found itself this year. We discussed his collaboration with Christian Ward on the utterly surprising Event Horizon: Dark Descent series, and how he finally delivered what the movie only hinted at back in the nineties. Exquisite Corpses Volume 1 is now available from Tiny Onion and Image Comics. Event Horizon: Dark Descent issues 1-2 are now available from IDW Publishing. Issue 3 arrives in comic book shops everywhere on November 12th. Follow Michael Walsh on Blue Sky and Instagram. Follow Tristan Jones on Blue Sky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsors This November, Event Horizon: Dark Descent, the terrifying comic book prequel series to the classic, 90s, hellraising sci-fi film, reaches its epic third issue, and if you always wanted to know the gory details about exactly what went down when the Event Horizon crew were transported to hell, this is the issue you cannot miss. From writer Christian Ward and artist Tristan Jones, Event Horizon: Dark Descent #3 lands in comic book shops on November 12th courtesy of IDW Publishing, with a killer cover by Jeffrey Alan Love and a variant cover by Chris Burnham. Ian and Sujewa embrace the time change with a look at Blake Calhoun's love letter to early-80s cassette culture, Casey Makes a Mixtape!Presley Richardson stars as Casey, a 13-year-old girl navigating her parents' messy divorce while staying with her grandparents for the summer in East Texas. When she's not fourth-wall monologuing about the sanctity of headphones and strategies for recording songs off the radio, Casey bobs and weaves through a series of misadventures with new friends in the neighborhood. In this spoilerific review, the IndieSeen team looks at this visually impressive time capsule whose pinballing narrative makes for quite the bumpy flashback. All Negro Comics is a landmark issue in U.S. Comic History curated in 1947 by Orrin C. Evans a journalist at the Philadelphia Record (now the Philadelphia Inquirer). Evans intent was to provide positive portrayals of Black Life and Heroism, the exact opposite to the negative stereotypes common in comics, TV, and Movies during that time. 8 years after Action Comics #1 and 6 years after Captain America #1, All Negro Comics was the very first comic made entirely by Black Creators marking a step forward in media for that time. Introducing us to characters such as Ace Harlem, Lion Man, Sugarfoot and Snake Oil to Lil Eggie.Today, We speak with Chris Robinson-Writer/Editor of this historical book as he added new elements in this 75th anniversary issue to bridge the gap with not only the remastered works from the original issue, but Essays from Literary Scholars like Quiana Whitted of Rutgers University and Creators like David Brothers and Shawn Pryor making a connection from what the industry was in the 40's to where many Black Creators have found meaning in their own journey with comics today.Tell, Teach, TributeThe Book was first remastered in a Hardcover version 3 years ago through Kickstarter and now finds a new path as Image Comics has come to distribute the comics in a softcover format in October of 2025.All Negro Comics by Orrin C. If Marvel and DC are the big 2 and Superman and Spidey represent them then Image Comics is certainly number 3 and representing them would most certainly be Todd McFarlanes' 1992 creation SPAWN. The story of government assassin Al Simmons and his deal with the devil that made him into Hellspawn caught the eye of HBO Animation in the late 90s. Tonight we take a look at season 1 so turn out your lights!!

Comics writer and cartoonist Kyle Starks joins me to talk about his brand-new Image Comics series, Wrestle Heist — a wild blend of pro-wrestling spectacle and fast-paced crime caper energy. We get into how the idea came together, his trademark mix of humor and heartfelt chaos, and what makes this book stand apart from his previous creator-owned hits.Kyle also discusses his recent work writing Peacemaker for DC's Black Label, sharing how he brought his offbeat humor and emotional grit to one of DC's most unpredictable antiheroes. He teases his upcoming Vertigo series debuting next year, which pushes him into darker, more character-driven territory while still keeping his sharp dialogue and storytelling muscle.Plus, we dig into the next wave of creator-owned projects he's got cooking — from new collaborations to long-planned solo works that show just how versatile and fearless he's become as a writer.
In Part 1 of this in-depth conversation, writer B. Clay Moore reflects on his early years as the marketing director at Image Comics during the early 2000s — a pivotal era when the company was reinventing itself around a new wave of creator-owned talent.Moore discusses working behind the scenes with emerging voices like Rick Remender and Jonathan Hickman, and how Image's independent spirit encouraged creators to take bold storytelling risks that reshaped the comics landscape. Moore also dives into the creation of his breakout series Hawaiian Dick, co-created with artist Steven Griffin — a genre-blending mix of crime noir, tiki-era cool, and supernatural mystery that became a critical and cult favorite for Image. He shares how the concept was born, how he and Griffin developed its striking visual tone, and how the book stood out in an industry dominated by superhero titles. The discussion rounds out with Moore recalling his collaboration with Tony Harris at DC Comics on the acclaimed JSA: The Liberty Files — a gritty espionage reimagining of the Justice Society set during World War II — and their later follow-up project, The Whistling Skull, a pulpy, post-war adventure that expanded their unique corner of the DC Universe.Part 2 airs tomorrow, covering more on Moore's creative process, later volumes of Hawaiian Dick, and his perspective on the modern state of creator-owned comics.
In this 2021 Word Balloon conversation, acclaimed writer Ed Brubaker joins John Siuntres to discuss his Eisner-winning crime graphic novel Destroy All Monsters, the third volume in the Reckless series created with longtime collaborator Sean Phillips. Brubaker explains how Destroy All Monsters expands the world of 1980s Los Angeles through the eyes of Ethan Reckless, the one-man fixer caught between Hollywood corruption, fading ideals, and his own haunted past.He talks about how the story draws from the noir tradition of Ross Macdonald and the downbeat realism of 1970s thrillers — but told through the sleek, cinematic storytelling he and Phillips have perfected. The conversation explores how the Reckless books evolved out of Criminal, Fatale, and Kill or Be Killed, why he and Phillips pivoted to the original graphic novel format, and how working with Sean's son Jacob Phillips for color and design gave the series a distinctive look and rhythm.Brubaker also opens up about his creative process, writing discipline, and the freedom of publishing through Image Comics, where he and Phillips maintain full ownership and complete artistic control. It's a candid, craft-focused talk with one of comics' finest storytellers — part writing masterclass, part look inside modern noir's most successful creative partnership.

Every creative person has that one work their audience considers the ultimate creation—their masterpiece. On today's pod, we had a blast digging into some of our favorite comic creators' defining works. We talk about legends like Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and Neal Adams, along with later giants like Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, Mike Mignola, and many more. Is a masterpiece a single issue, an iconic run, a stretch of covers, or even one unforgettable cover? Is it the creation of an iconic character like Thanos or Deadpool? Or could it be something beyond the page, such as the launch of Image Comics and Milestone Media? The conversation runs long and goes in all kinds of directions (as you might expect), but one thing's for sure—the opinions fly fast and furious!

Sometimes a fantasy comic appears, hits the ground running and blow your minds with a gauntleted fist, and 'Godhark' was a book that did that. So this week the ACP crew sat down with its creator Sean Manaloto to talk about the creation of the book, his artwork, influences, epic storytelling and the pure love of the comics medium. From talking about creating during a pandemic, collaborating with your partner, heavy metal, video games and the comics scene in the Philippines, its another awesome conversation with a creator everyone should look out for. All that and a bunch of brilliant comics to check out, a discussion about the joy of good comics and an insight into the comics scene in Riga! Great stuff to check out: Godhark, Sean Manaloto, Komiket, Gumroad, Hal Weaver, cus comics, London Comic Mart, Baltimore Comic Con, Western Noir Tales, American Nature 3, The Santos Sisters, DUI#4, Cabrisini and Geek Girl, Mahoneys, Worry Wart, Nick Bryan, Lane Lloyd, Grim Scary Tales: Echoes of the Damned, You're the Centre of Attention, Gina Wynbrandt, Black Demon Tales: Mechanika, The Phantom, Mad Cave Comics, Skinbreaker, David Finch, Robert Kirkman, The Shadow Planet, Image Comics
Lotsa firsties as usual! We're talking Madcave's Phantom, Detective Comics 1101 (which is a first issue in spirit by modern day standards), Ultimate Hawkeye, Robert Kirkmans Skinbreaker on Skybound via Image Comics, Viking Moon also on Image, and Twilight zone! Maybe another one I'm spacing on, but is that not enough for you?!?! I also check with Vargas on how much I should freak out about these crazy Spider-man Magic the Gathering prices.
Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller drive up to the Dunn Museum in Libertyville, IL to talk with legendary comics painter Alex Ross. Known for Marvels, Kingdom Come, and decades of redefining superhero realism, Ross reflects on his career trajectory, his education at the American Academy of Art, his influences (from Neal Adams to Dave McKean), his early breaks with Now Comics and Leo Burnett storyboarding, and his transition into large-scale mural projects for Marvel and DC. The conversation ranges from comics history, realism in superhero depictions, variant cover economics, the physicality of superheroes, to America's appetite for dystopian narratives versus a return to the “pure Superman.” Ross is candid, funny, and deeply reflective about the comics medium, painting, and storytelling.
