When her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago, Lauren Herring jumped in to help with projects and lead the global expansion for IMPACT Group—the firm her mother had launched in 1988.In 2007, Herring led the work of incorporating an acquisition target of the company, an outplacement firm that doubled the company's size. Two years later, she took over as the company's CEO — right after the economic downturn. But in her company's line of work at that time, economic downturns are mother's milk. With its focus at the time on employee relocation and outplacement services, IMPACT Group's business was countercyclical: Bad economic times were good for business. The company had its best year ever in 2008.And that is the crux of our story. As Herring put it, 2010, 2011 and 2012 were slow recovery years. The firm needed to restructure its lines of business to moderate the hot-and-cold nature of its business cycle. The outplacement business was countercyclical and generally meant bad news for clients, which was good news for her business in a bad economy—like, during a pandemic. Meanwhile, IMPACT Group's relocation services served a niche within a niche, focusing largely on the needs of the spouse in the relocation. It wasn't enough to even out the rise and fall of revenue as economic cycles came and went.IMPACT Group had some experience and modest success with leadership coaching, and that was the area where Herring saw an opportunity to build. But it wasn't smooth sailing.“Going into this transition, I thought we had great clients and partners, and we went into this with more hubris than is appropriate,” she said. “I thought this would be a snap. I realized it would be a difficult journey.”She realized she had more of a sales job than she anticipated to persuade potential clients she had the expertise for the job. Even more, she learned she had to bring her people into the process, help them understand how to build client relationships, rather than sell transactionally. “For the leadership, people do want that,” she said. “But I didn't understand the shift required over a number of years to confidently go to our clients and say we're really good at this.”RELATED LINKSListen to episodes of Lauren Herring's podcast, “Take Control of Your Career”IMPACT Group's websiteAbout Lauren HerringBooks Lauren Herring has written: “Take Control of Your Job Search!” and “This side up: A Simple guide to your successful relocation”More about Markus BaerCREDITSThis podcast is a production of Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. Happy Tuesday! Bernadette gets deep today. Please, rethink dove hunting. The doves live behind Bernadette's house and she loves seeing them every morning! Please, rethink your hobby. If you kill for sport, please rethink your actions. As far as actions, our two guests are always in action! Jerry Yudelson and Lauren Herring will be joining One Life Radio today! So exciting! Jerry Yudelson Yudelson is a social activist, environmentalist, engineer and spiritual seeker. He’s chronicled his extensive 50-year career and spiritual journey in his book, “The Godfather of Green: An Eco-Spiritual Memoir.” Jerry’s environmental activism began with the inaugural Earth Day Celebration in 1970, when Jerry was a campus organizer at Caltech. He was a key player in California’s solar energy movement during the 70s and 80s, appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to run the state’s solar development program. Jerry has authored 12 books on green building, sustainable development, water conservation, green homes, building performance and green marketing. Fires, Floods, Coronavirus & Climate Change – The Real Challenges We Face in the Coming Decade. Jerry is here to tell us a little bit more about climate change. Currently, there are so many wildfires in California right now due to lightning! The influx of storms is directly due to climate change. Right now, we have more carbon dioxide in the universe than we have in 3 million years. We are heading into doubling and tripling the temperature rise than ever before. Let's look at hurricane Laura. Laura went from a category 1 to a category 4 in 24 hours. The increased heat in the Gulf of Mexico allowed for hurricane Laura to gain strength. We have changed a lot in the last 50 years since the first earth day in 1970. The United States need to be a good example for other countries around the world. We are taking advantage of our earth and planet. We must respect the planet we were given. There is no planet B! Lauren Herring Lauren Herring is CEO of IMPACT Group, the largest woman- owned career coaching company supporting over 200 Fortune 500 companies worldwide. Over the past 30 years, IMPACT Group has successfully helped hundreds of thousands of people find jobs. Additionally, Lauren has donated IMPACT Group’ s services to thousands of individuals in underserved communities, helping them to find jobs, dignity and economic independence. She has received the "Game Changer Award" by Workforce Magazine and has been published or quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Fast Company. Lauren’s passion for making a positive impact led her to write "Take Control of Your Job Search!" as well as  "This Side Up!" Lauren can also be found running the streets of St. Louis while training for a triathlon or spending time with her husband, Ted, and two young children. 10 Emotions To Master During Your Job Search So many people are out of work right now, so Lauren's book is a great read, and so timely! Networking is the #1 driver of jobs right now, especially now, more than ever. The saying "it's not about what you know, it's who you know" is a saying for a reason! Career IQ and EQ are important, but EQ can often be forgotten. Your emotional expertise matters too! Sometimes, not having a job is not the worst thing ever. Take time to get your game plan together. Take time to strengthen your skills. If you do not have connections, that's okay! Bernadette says that she respects people who want to work hard, more than those who just "sit" or know someone. You must master both the positive and negative emotions alike! Having a team of support behind you is critical during a job search. Think of it as a personal advisory board. Lauren says to the people that are desperate to find a job during COVID, do not be discouraged. Get out there and try! Focus on your personal branding and make your intentions clear. Show your value and what you can bring to the table! Have faith in yourself. Thank You!

From setting up an Indian takeout stand in Basel to creating a suitcase career of a yoga instructor in Eastern Europe, Tracy’s experiences and work is a critical part of the ‘mobility army’ that moves someone from one country to another.

Video is Worth a Million Words Dr. James McQuivery of Forrester Research stated as much in his research, which finds that one-minute of video equals 1.8 million words*.  How long would it take for you bang out that much content on your blog? A single frame of video equals 3 pages of written content. According to a Hubspot article on Internet Marketing statistics in 2012 (http://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/30495/25-Eye-Popping-Internet-Marketing-Statistics-for-2012.aspx) * viewers of online video will hit 169.3 million * over half the population and 70% of internet users will watch * mobile video will reach over 54 million viewers * smartphones video views over51 million Other interesting stats * 73% of home sellers will list with an agent that does video, but only 12% of agents have a YouTube account.** * Youtube has over 800 million monthly unique visitors with over 4 billion video hours being watched*** * 30% of YouTube traffic comes from the US*** * YouTube  traffic from mobile devices tripled in 2011*** How to do video? I have been creating online video since late 2007. Sadly, those early videos have been lost into the deep recesses of an angry delete from my own hand. I started doing an only hi-8 Sonycam that I had to use another product to digitize the video. So, I can upload it to Windows MovieMaker which was a horrible program to even try to edit videos. Currently I use: camera: * Sony HDR-200 ($700) * Kodak Zi8 (paid $80/Amazon $250 to $400) software: * Magix 17 ($100) * iMovie misc: * green screen ($45) * stands ($75) * wireless mics ($100)  How to use video: (http://davewoodson.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/don-150x150.jpg) Really -the sky is the limit.  You can use online video for almost any aspect of your business. I have had clients use it for: * client testimonials * how-to's * product information * home tours * presentations * and the list could on and on - you control the limits sources: * Impact Group (http://www.i-impactgroup.com/A%20Video%20Is%20Worth_041812.pdf) **heard this from several different sources ***YouTube Stats Page (http://www.youtube.com/t/press_statistics)
