Simon Morris looks back on 2024, a year initially damaged by writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood, and still wondering what happened after Barbie and Oppenheimer changed the rules last year. This year was a bumper year for non-American films, for sequels and prequels, for horror films, and for some reason films about 1970s television! It was also a pretty good year for New Zealand films, low budget films and the best films from Pixar and Marvel in years. All this plus the hotly-contested Cate Blanchett They're In Everything award. No, Cate didn't make it this year. Go to this episode on rnz.co.nz for more details

Fan of the show? https://www.patreon.com/newleftradio (Support us on Patreon)! Amazon permeates our lives in so many ways, from lightning-fast consumerism to hoarding metadata - it does it all. It makes sense that a platform originating in bookselling has had an impact on the author and of fiction itself. Literary critic Mark McGurl joins us to discuss his new book Everything and Less: The Novel in the Age of Amazon, and the deep impact that platform capitalism has had on the artform that is the written word. About Everything and Less: The Novel in the Age of Amazon Since it was first launched in 1994, Amazon has changed the world of literature. The “Everything Store” has not just transformed how we buy books; it has affected what we buy, and even what we read. In Everything and Less, acclaimed critic Mark McGurl explores this new world where writing is no longer categorized as high or lowbrow, literature or popular fiction. Charting a course spanning from Henry James to E. L. James, McGurl shows that contemporary writing has less to do with writing per se than with the manner of its distribution. This consumerist logic—if you like this, you might also like …—has reorganized the fiction universe so that literary prize-winners sit alongside fantasy, romance, fan fiction, and the infinite list of hybrid genres and self-published works. This is an innovation to be cautiously celebrated. Amazon's platform is not just a retail juggernaut but an aesthetic experiment driven by an unseen algorithm rivaling in the depths of its effects any major cultural shift in history. Here all fiction is genre fiction, and the niches range from the categories of crime and science fiction to the more refined interests of Adult Baby Diaper Lover erotica. Everything and Less is a hilarious and insightful map of both the commanding heights and sordid depths of fiction, past and present, that opens up an arresting conversation about why it is we read and write fiction in the first place. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/678755/everything-and-less-by-mark-mcgurl/ (Buy the book here) About Mark McGurl Mark McGurl is the Albert Guérard Professor of Literature at Stanford University, where he has been a member of the English Department since 2012. In Everything!“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”1 Thessalonians 5:18 KJVGod is good and He is good all the time! James 1:17 says that every good and every perfect gift comes from Him. Therefore it is imperative that we know He is the blesser - He is the answer - He is our solution!Sure there are bad things that happen to good people and in spite of these things, we can be thankful and praise Him! Why? Because He is for us! John 16:33 says in this world we will have trouble but then Jesus encourages us to take heart because He has overcome the world!1 John 4:4 says greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world!Psalm 34:19 says many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers them out of them all!In everything, not for everything, we can praise the Lord because He is good and good all the time! We can know that He has our backs! He is our loving heavenly father who desires to see us blessed, whole, healthy, prosperous, delivered, free, full of joy and so much more!Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him, Us! To bring us joy, not depression! It was the Great Exchange - our mess, our filthy rags for His robes of righteousness! Our shame and guilt for His Peace!Be encouraged today, no matter what circumstance you find yourself in, no matter how dark it seems or feels, Jesus paid the ultimate price to give you hope and a future, that's the Good News! Therefore in spite of whatever goes on in this crazy world and yes it's a crazy world, we can be thankful and full of life ready to share with others the reason for our Peace, His name is Jesus! No matter what happens, please know that God is for you, not against you! He isn't bringing about death or curses or pain or trouble or temptation - these things are of the world, NO! He is our ever-present help in times of trouble! He is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother! He is our rock, our refuge, under His wings we can trust! In times of trouble, turmoil, and temptation Run to Him, not from Him! Don't blame Him, claim Him - He is your solution, and IN everything gives thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you :) Remember: What you make happen for others, God will make happen for you!In Christ,Joshua Scott Zeitz Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/joshzeitz)

In Part 1 of our series, In Everything, our experience pastor, Chris Denning, will guide us in understanding what worship is in everything through Romans 12.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 In EVERYTHING give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. When you find yourself toe to toe with the enemy, break out in thanksgiving and praise. Praise him right out of your way. Let God inhabit your very presence and thank Him for what He has done, what He has protected you from, and for what He is going to do. Praise is a weapon! Use this weapon despite what you see, hear, feel, smell, or touch.
No matter what you may be going through and what the circumstances of your life may be, it is important to give thanks. Today Rev. Grace Bukachi challenges us from the topic ' In Everything, Give Thanks.' #CITAMChurchOnline #ChurchEveryday
Scripture For Today:Psalm 141:5“Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness; let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it, for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.”Refuse to Worry pt 2We have been studying what the Apostle Paul has taught us concerning having the Peace of God operating in our lives. Yesterday, we learned from Philippians 4:6 that we should not have a care in the world that concerns us. Amen! We can read this as well in 1 Peter 5:7 which reads: “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you!” How do we cast our cares over on the Lord? Well, as far as I know, there is only ONE WAY and His Name is Jesus! Amen! The only way to do that is through PRAYER. I know the word “prayer” in not mentioned in that verse, but there is no other way to interpret the verse unless you are focused on prayer to do so. What are you going to do about anxieties and all the things you continually worry about? You have to do something with them. Why not just “cast them upon the Lord?” Amen! Let's read that verse again in 1 Peter 5:7: “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you!” And in Philippians 4:6 again, we read, “Be careful for nothing; but in everything BY PRAYER and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God…” Does this verse say to let your requests be known to God in the little things? YES. Even in the little things. YES, even in the big things. In the sort of middle things, too. It says IN EVERYTHING! AMEN! I've heard some people say something to the effect of, “Well, I couldn't bother God with these little cares and such. He's too busy for that. I'll just have to handle this myself.” But God doesn't want YOU to fret or be anxious about ANYTHING. That's why He said “But in EVERYTHING – by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving, make your requests known to God!” How much plainer does He have to say it? Praise God! Let's Pray! The New York Times bestselling author's newest book is a guide to art, science, sex and death. In Everything is Spiritual, the author Rob Bell explores how ideas about creation, love and connection shaped him and how they shape every one of us. Bell observes that more than anything, people want to understand their purpose here on earth. And when you embrace who and where you come from, including your wounds, your pains and your regrets, you will discover that lurking there in the mess of life is an invitation to expand - just as the universe has been expanding for 13 billion years. Written in a lyrical, almost stream of consciousness style this wide-ranging book shares stories from Bell's life to illuminate lessons about the world around you to help you find purpose, meaning and connection. 'Rob Bell might have left the church, but he will always be my minister - in the purest and most uncorrupted sense of that word. Nobody else can take ancient teachings and modern science, and blend them together into wisdom that makes sense to me, and heals me. Rob's unorthodox and bold thinking stirs my intellect, comforts my heart and makes me believe that - within all the frightening chaos of the unknowable universe - I still have a sacred place. His work is a sacred gift to a troubled world.' - Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Big Magic

We have officially made it to the last episode of the season! In ‘Everything is Everything' the girls wrap things up with a few quick topics. They introduce the ‘Mystery Box' where questions are blindly drawn. This is where things get a tad bit wild (as usual). Cheating women, hell dates, and top albums of the year are all discussed; as well as proposing the question: what would you do for the bag? Of course they had to answer for themselves, and in the end, some light is always thrown. Thank you for tuning in this week as we invite you to sit on our couch! Guelph based singer-songwriter Annie Sumi‘s 2017 album “In The Unknown” has been nominated for New/Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards. The follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2015 debut “Reflections”, In The Unknown is a fabulous release, filled with gorgeous songs that have a real connection to the world around us, and speak to the divine in everything. The bed tracks for the album were recorded off-the-floor at a remote Northern Ontario cabin while further instrumentation and vocal tracks were added at Revolution Recording and Union Sound in Toronto with producer Neil Whitford. With some wonderfully ethereal vocals from Annie, and a musical landscape created by guitar, piano, strings and more, it truly feels like you are wrapped in sound. We caught up with Annie at home in Guelph to chat about her music. You can find Annie Sumi online at http://anniesumi.com. Music: Annie Sumi “Nightingale”, “In Everything” and “Evaporating Life” from “In The Unknown” (2017, Self).
''A marvelous storyteller'' (Chicago Tribune), Mary Morris explores some of her favorite themes-away versus home, childhood memories, and the Midwest-in such works of fiction as A Mother's Love, House Arrest, and The Jazz Palace. The winner of the Rome Prize and the Ainsfield-Wolf Award for Fiction, she is also the author of the travel classic Nothing to Declare: Memoirs of a Woman Traveling Alone. In Gateway to the Moon, Morris interweaves the stories of a secluded New Mexican town's present-day residents with those of its original settlers 500 years earlier. Nathaniel Popkin is the author and co-author of five books, including Lion and Leopard, Song of the City, and Philadelphia: Finding the Hidden City. He is also co-editor of the literary anthology Who Will Speak for America?, the fiction editor of Cleaver Magazine, and the writer/editor of the Emmy-winning documentary film series Philadelphia: The Great Experiment. In Everything is Borrowed, he ponders regret, history, and the intransigence of the urban landscape through the strangely parallel lives of two men separated by centuries. Watch the video here. (recorded 5/10/2018)
Nathaniel Popkin is a writer, editor, historian, journalist, and the author of five books, including his most recent novel Everything is Borrowed (https://www.amazon.com/Everything-Borrowed-Nathaniel-Popkin/dp/099955011X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526668316&sr=8-1&keywords=everything+is+borrowed&dpID=51FTGgoH8OL&preST=_SY344_BO1,204,203,200_QL70_&dpSrc=srch). A meditation on cruelty and regret, a mesmerizing tour of a city through time, and an evocative portrait of radical Jewish life of another age. In Everything is Borrowed, acclaimed architect Nicholas Moscowitz lands a major commission, but his drive suddenly falters. The site of the new project awakens guilty memories, and when he digs into the place’s history, he uncovers a 19th-century Moskowitz whose life offers strange parallels to his own. As Nicholas grows obsessed with this shadow man, the dual narratives of Moskowitz and Moscowitz, the city’s past and present, blend in unexpected and poignant ways. Ultimately Nicholas must face certain truths that don’t change over time—and use them to rebuild his own life. Special Guest: Nathaniel Popkin.

The Bible has a lot to say about gratitude, too. In EVERYTHING give thanks. But it’s not always so easy to feel thankful. Sometimes our circumstances make us feel anxious, or depressed, or angry. And having a thankful heart is the last thing on our minds. Listen to this fresh interpretation on The Ten Lepers story. And find the key to gratitude.

In Everything, Prayer explores the various ways of our life in Prayer at St. Aidan's.
We do not want to participate in pride's consequences! It's a whole lot better to repent and be cleansed from the sin of pride. God resists the proud, and that means IN EVERYTHING. God GIVES grace to the humble, and that means ALL THE TIME. Be prepared to be confronted with Scripture and on to the road of those that humble themselves before the Lord and reap the benefits.

In Everything is Futbol's first ever podcast, the boys argue about the USA's disappointing Gold Cup performance and then go on to discuss the outlook for the national team's remaining games later this year. Due to the various locations of our correspondents and this being their first ever podcast, some small parts of the podcast are slightly choppy. Our apologies! We hope everyone enjoys :D

In "Everything is Alive," I approach the intelligent, innocent idea of our youth that there is life in the inanimate, and I look at some of Wordsworth's lines from the famous poem "Tintern Abbey."
