Doug Hayes has always had a mindset of entrepreneurship and wealth building. He started his first business (a community newspaper called “Doug’s Monthly”) at 12 years old. Having always shown an interest with numbers and budgetary management, Doug pursued a Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Howard University, graduating in 1996. By the age of 23, he bought his first house and by 25 he was running his own successful limousine and sedan service in the Detroit, MI area. Doug invested in more real estate beginning in 2006, then in 2008 he saw many good companies substantially undervalued in the stock market because of the financial crisis. It was absolute panic so he took a chance on a few companies, knowing we would eventually come out of the recession and made a profit. He educated himself on investing in the stock market through continuous research and surrounding himself with other traders. He took control of his own 401K and established an IRA account by transferring old 401K’s into it. This gave him flexibility to use various strategies to yield better returns. Doug's own finances have seen highs and lows so he designed a budget system he calls The Roadmap to Financial Freedom. This system helped him to stay focused in paying down debt, saving money, and planning for an early retirement. Seeing an absence of financial literacy in our society coupled with his Christian roots, Doug developed a passion for helping others become successful in financial management. Through the experience he’s gained trading the stock market, he wants to help people develop a road map for building generational wealth. He says "many people have a misconception of the stock market because of their lack of knowledge, but it has proven to be the biggest wealth creator known to man." With Doug’s 20-plus years of experience in financial management, customer service and sales, he wants to educate and help people create a legacy that can be passed down for generations to come. She attended her first Steelers game at 10 years old, and little did she know that it would be the beginning of a life-long involvement with the sport. She stayed in Pittsburgh for college, attending the University of Pittsburgh. There she met Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, a star running back at Pitt who would go on to play in the NFL for 11 years. The couple lived in five cities, eventually settling in Atlanta to raise their sons -- Cameron, Corey, and Connor. Charlotte developed a love for real estate as a result of their moves, and became a Realtor in 2002. Real estate wasn’t her only job. She also spent countless hours as a certified “sports mom,” taking her sons to practices, games, tournaments, and college visits. Her oldest, Cameron, eventually went on to play football at The Ohio State University. In 2011, he was selected in the first round of the NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Her middle son, Corey, played basketball at Georgia Tech, graduating with a degree in Business. Her youngest, Connor, currently plays football at Michigan State University. She also has a daughter, Meagan Henderson, whom she adopted and raised as her own. Meagan graduated from Elon University, with a degree in digital marketing, where she ran track and was in the top eight in her conference in the hurdles. In 2015, Charlotte and Cameron were able to turn one of their biggest passions--giving back to the community--into The Cameron Heyward Foundation, aka The Heyward House. Charlotte serves as the Foundation’s Executive Director. The foundation strives to positively impact underserved youth and families in the Pittsburgh region. From literacy initiatives to scholarships to Craig’s Closet, which provides free dress clothes to teenage boys, Charlotte and Cameron want to make sure that as many children as possible feel like they have someone in their corner rooting for them. 2021 marks the launch of 3DSportz, a consulting firm that focuses on giving athletes and parents the tools at the high school, college and professional level from navigating recruitment to being well-rounded and successful in sports and life. Raymond is currently serving as an active NYPD Lieutenant and is running for New York City Council District 40 for teachers that need more resources, for hospitals that need more funding, and for communities that need more opportunities, not over-policing. Raymond is dedicated to addressing issues of over-policing, improving schools, increasing affordable housing, supporting small businesses, and making quality healthcare accessible. As an NYPD officer, he knows what needs to change so that our police force is accountable to all New Yorkers and that starts with increased oversight from the City Council. Dedicating his early life to activism, in 2014, he, along with his childhood friend, co-founded PLOT (Preparing Leader of Tomorrow) which serves vulnerable youth by offering them mentors, resources, and support. A year later, he became an advocate for “Raise the Age,” an initiative that reformed the practice of automatically charging teenagers as adults no matter how minor the offense they committed. Raymond has always sought out ways to advocate and strengthen the communities that he has been a part of and he seeks to continue that work in the 40th District. Raymond is also a subject of the Emmy award-winning Hulu original documentary Crime + Punishment that chronicled Raymond along with 11 NYPD officers, who blew the whistle on arrest quotas and racism within the NYPD. Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2021 39:10

The Hill We Climb - Amanda Gorman When day comes we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry asea we must wade. We’ve braved the belly of the beast. We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace. In the norms and notions of what just is isn’t always justice. And yet, the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow we do it. Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished. We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one. And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge our union with purpose. To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man. And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all. Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true. That even as we grieved, we grew. That even as we hurt, we hoped. That even as we tired, we tried that will forever be tied together victorious. Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division. Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid. If we’re to live up to her own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made. That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare. It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit. It’s the past we step into and how we repair it. We’ve seen a forest that would shatter our nation rather than share it. Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. This effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. In this truth, in this faith we trust for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared it at its inception. We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour, but within it, we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves so while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be a country that is bruised, but whole, benevolent, but bold, fierce, and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation. Our blunders become their burdens. But one thing is certain, if we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright. So let us leave behind a country better than one we were left with. Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the West. We will rise from the wind-swept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the Lake Rim cities of the Midwestern states. We will rise from the sun-baked South. We will rebuild, reconcile and recover in every known nook of our nation, in every corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful. When day comes, we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it. Ep 39 - Trump Impeached...AGAIN! - Social Justice Wednesday

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2021 41:43

What is impeachment? Impeachment is a grave and historically rare declaration by the House of Representatives accusing a federal official, like the President of the United States, of treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanors. Impeachment is the first step toward potentially removing the federal official from office, triggering a trial in the Senate to decide. The House of Representatives has impeached three presidents: President Andrew Johnson in 1868, President Bill Clinton in 1998, and President Donald Trump in 2019. No president has ever been impeached twice or convicted and removed from office due to impeachment. What does the process look like? House vote: A simple majority in the House is required to impeach the president. If the vote fails, the president is not impeached and the process ends there. Senate trial: After the House votes to impeach, the Senate would then hold a trial to determine whether to convict the president of impeachment. Senate vote: A conviction requires a two-thirds supermajority of senators. If the vote falls short, the president is not convicted and the process ends there. If two-thirds of senators do agree to convict, the president is removed from office and the vice president becomes president. What’s at stake? If the president is convicted by the Senate, he would lose the benefits associated with the post-presidency, such as a pension, security detail, and travel allowance. He could also lose the ability to run for president again. Will this delay President-elect Biden’s inauguration? No. As mandated in the U.S. Constitution, President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be sworn into office on January 20, 2021, at noon at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. We must fight for social justice like never before because we have the opportunity in this era to see significant change with this administration like never before...if we do our part to see this definition of Social Justice manifested in this county... Social justice is a concept of fair or balanced relations between the individual and society as measured by the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society, that include personal activity and social privilege opportunities. ***Listening/Watching/Reading. 1. Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Entrepreneur, and Author Anim Ameh affectionally calls herself a wannabe interior decorator. It is only fitting since she has designed a career path filled with philanthropy, mentoring, and educating the public-at-large on mental health. Securing a master’s in social work was a seed that was planted by her supervisor while she was working at the VA, doing outreach, and providing services to veterans. Anim credits the meteoric rise in her field to the keen guidance of her mentors and fellow trailblazers (all women). She has coined the phrase Therapy Over Silence, which is tied to a social movement that addresses the unique needs of black and brown people in the mental health space. She believes that providing holistic approaches to mental health can effectively treat inner-city communities. Being the daughter of a Haitian and a Cameroon parents, she understands the cultural biases, nuisances, and even the frailties of this underserved and overlooked group. Consequently, she penned a children’s book titled Elijah Was Brave, the first of its kind used to support black and brown families dealing with mental illness. Elijah Was Brave, but so is its creator who opened her own mental health practice in 2018.  “I wanted to start my own practice to provide culturally sensitive support that was not dictated by insurance companies.” When she’s not rocking the mic, giving talks on mental health, or carrying out her duties as a board advisor and consultant for a Boston based nonprofit, she’s relaxing on the beach with her family and friends in tow. https://linktr.ee/animaweh https://linktr.ee/therapyoversilence Instagram - @animaweh ------------------------------------- https://linktr.ee/phaethplace --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
