Jarman and Steve took a week off. Steve was on vacation, horrible things happened in Orlando where Jarman lives and where they both grew up, and so much more. It's been a tough few weeks, so be warned, we do a bit of venting, but then we cool off with some movie reviews, including Captain America: Civil War (Steve finally saw it), X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day: Resurgence and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. (MAN...all those movies really like their colons) For Nerdy News we discuss strange Canadian corpse-dissolving technology and a even stranger developing Universal Pictures monster-movie shared universe that is developing. For Trailer Reviews we cover the zombie film based off the book, The Girl With All the Gifts and Kevin Smith's upcoming Yoga Hosers. This week we introduce a brand new feature segment to the podcast: Retro Retrospective! Both Steve and Jarman pick one of their favorite movies that the other has not seen, and then they join up on the podcast to review them with each other. In future iterations of this segment they will surely not agree on why each movie should be a favorite, but this time around, they do! For this episode we review one of Steve's favorites, The Dark Crystal, from the genius mind of Jim Henson; and for one of Jarman's favorites, we review Zero Charisma, a film all about a misfit who runs some serious games of Dungeons and Dragons. Let us know what you think of the new segment! For Nerdy News Steve tells us of 99 million year old ants and why human babies are so useless, and Jarman regales us with news of possible Captain Marvel casting in the MCU and how Elon Musk thinks we are definitely living in a computer simulation. For Trailer Reviews we have the new and improved Star Trek Beyond trailer and the Mark Strong lonesome in space flick, Exploring the Unknown. Two movies with nearly the same plot, released in the same year...it's time for another addition of Copy Cat Cinema! This time with Red Planet VS Mission to Mars! Steve and Jarman both pick a film and have to fight to the death on which one is better...even though they are both pretty crappy...let's be honest. We also cover some great Nerdy News with awesome discoveries in pre-historic dolphins, ancient homo-sapiens with some serious STDs, the Wheel of Time books getting a TV series, Game of Thrones interrupting porn, and Netflix announcing a standalone Punisher series! With CBS's recent announcement of a new Star Trek TV series officially on the horizon, we figure it's the perfect time to wildly speculate as to what it will be about! When will it be set? Who will be cast? What universe will it be in?! We try to guess at the answer to these questions and more. For much needed help in this giant discussion we are joined buy Chris Mitchell from the Ten Forward Podcast, and Ryan Porter from Positively Nerdy! They add their essential Star Trek knowledge and expertise. You can find our guests on Twitter: Chris @ChrisCantFly and Ryan @PositivelyNerdy Before we delve into the main discussion, Steve contribute some bizarre Nerdy News about helmets and auto-erotic-asphyxiation, and Jarman gives an update on that possible alien Dyson sphere far far away. In Trailer Reviews, we discuss the much anticipated Warcraft film, and the controversial upcoming Tarantino flick, The Hateful Eight. In this special early release of A Play On Nerds we discuss all of our favorite villains of movies, TV, comics and video games, in honor of Halloween weekend! Before the feature we discuss some Nerdy News with a tale of a possible real life zombie attack on an airliner and also some Star Wars: The Force Awakens fan theories. Steve tests Jarman's knowledge of villains with Sidekick Showdown where he names the villain's sidekick/minion and we have to guess what villain they roll with. Jarman also plays Villainous Voices, where he plays the sound clip of the villain and you have to guess what villain made those villainous utterances. There are some real softballs in there... At the end, we have some great trailers to review, with the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, and the upcoming Seth Rogan/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Anthony Mackie vehicle, The Night Before. Our guest Paul Wright, all the way from Liverpool, England is an expert fan of all things related to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He helps us discuss the whole franchise in the feature segment; from the awesome radio series it started off as, to the books, television shows and finally the feature film. Before we jump in the odd end of the galaxy, we have some Nerdy News, where we discuss the recent revelation of flowing water on Mars, and the recent scientific testing that (once again) shows that autism is not caused by vaccinations. Sorry Donald Trump... Steve also returns with the fan favorite, 5-Minute Aficionado! Before he taught you how to be an expert with wine and cigars, now he teaches you the ins and outs of getting a professional massage :) In Trailer Reviews we discuss the return of Goosebumps with Jack Black and the YA novel film adaptation of The Fifth Wave. Join us this wee as we see the triumphant return or our re-occurring segment, Copy Cat Cinema! This time with EdTV VS The Truman Show! It's where we take 2 movies made around the same time, with all-too-similar plots. Some of our previous entries have been Gremlins VS Critters, or Armaggeddon VS Deep Impact, Volcano VS Dante's Peak... you get the idea. Then we both pick a movie and defend it as the better of the two films, whether we believe it or not! We start off the show with some Nerdy News; Japan developing Star Trek-like holodeck technology, and the continued evolution of polar bears! We then have a brief chat about the history of reality TV, and some of the producer secrets from behind the scenes. Then after the feature segment, Steve breaks out the funny with his Random Reality TV Show Title Generator. The results are ridiculous in their realistic-ness! For Trailer Reviews, we cover Nerdist Presents The Hive, and Vacation (2015) New intro music provided with permission by the awesome Jimmy Hinson of Big Giant Circles. First up it's Nerdy News, where we discuss the passing of Nintendo's CEO, Satoru Iwata, as well as the perplexing relationship between bats and pitcher-plants. Also, those creepy lights on the planet Ceres are still causing problems for our friends at NASA... For our main feature, Steve and Jarman, along with our special guest co-host, Patrick, jump into the world of Bethesda's Fallout. It's an awesome game series with it's fourth (technically 5th) installment coming out soon. With all the buzz over the new game, we thought we would discuss the history of the game and what makes it awesome. For Trailer Reviews we have the great bounty from San Diego Comic Con; a new Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, and the very first Suicide Squad trailer. Come hear our take on them! Steve and Jarman jump head on into the world of real and fake dinosaurs. First we discuss some fun crazy facts about the real deals that walked this earth over 65 million years ago, then we jump into the genetically modified soup of the Jurassic Park franchise; reviewing the first three films. We throw in our totally valid opinions on Jeff Goldblum's strange laugh, tons of random trivia on the films, and utter let-down of the third film. Only then do we jump into a spoiler-filled review of Jurassic World. We give you plenty of warning for spoiler time so feel free to listen up to that point if you haven't seen Jurassic World yet or listen on if you just don't care. Before the dinos we dish out some more bizarre Nerdy News, then end the show with some Trailer Reviews of The Martian and Into the Grizzly Maze. Have you seen Avengers: Age of Ultron yet?! Confused by who this Ultron guy is that now apparently has his own "Age"? Well join Jarman and Steve as they go to comic book school with Geoffrey Combs, a man with a 25,000 comic book collection, as he explains to them the history of Ultron, from his 1968 trash can form, to his James Spaderific version of today.
