Compared to some of the other Japanese pitchers who have transitioned to the United States, Hideo Nomo's American career seems relatively short and underwhelming. But the impact it had on two nations, how players move between leagues, and what fans can expect is immeasurable. After signing with the Dodgers 29 years ago this week, Hideo Nomo went on to prove that Japanese players could indeed thrive in the US, and paved the way for everyone who came affter. Mike and Bill look back at the Tornados life and career. Plus, happy birthday to Jimmy Ryan and Chet Lemon! And farewell to Red Swanson and Billy Gardner.

She was rising fast on the US and British top 40 charts with “That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be,” as well as her first album “Carly Simon,” on which Jimmy played guitar. Jimmy went on to perform with Carly on most of her future albums and continues to work off and on with her to this day. He's the guitar soloist on many of Carly's hits, the most memorable being “You're So Vain,” and the Academy Award winning song of the year, “Let the River Run,” from the movie, Working Girl. NOEL PAUL STOOKEY has enjoyed an extraordinary career that began as the “Paul” of the seminal 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary. Their signature vocal harmonies provided the soundtrack to a generation. At age 84 the legendary singer has released his latest album. I caught up with him. If you grew up in Australia during the early 70's you're sure to remember THE FLYING CIRCUS. A country, folk-rock band that really hit it big with the teenyboppers. I tracked down founder, COLIN WALKER and discovered a man still sad that Flying Circus weren't able to shake their bubblegum image. Guitarist, JIMMY RYAN has played with and written for some of the biggest names in rock n roll and his book is filled with stories about Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, Jim Croce and many more. It's called Behind: The Autobiography of a Musical Shapeshifter. Jimmy shares stories. Join me won't you? Mark Lafay was is a big part of the Haste The Day story as you heard in the recent Jimmy Ryan and Stephen Keech HTD episodes. We really needed to speak with Mark as well to further color the stories and see what we might have missed. This is a very fun conversation, and a must listen if you enjoyed the last 2 HTD episodes

This episode is a continuation of the previous Haste The Day chapter with Jimmy Ryan, who was not a Tooth & Nail kid but found his way into the scene. Jimmy helped build a legendary Solid State band and then walked away from his dream. This left a giant hole which provided the opportunity for a Tooth & Nail kid if there ever was one, the multi-talented Stephen Keech, to walk into to a fairytale dream-come-true scenario and knock it out of the park - taking Haste The Day to an even higher level of success. Jimmy Ryan, the original lead singer of Haste The Day, is in a rare category. His band was a breakout hit in the pinnacle of the Tooth & Nail/Solid State golden age, but Jimmy was NOT a Tooth & Nail kid. The rest of his band certainly were as they were youth group kids from a nice Indianapolis suburb when they joined forces with Jimmy. He was considerably older than them and, for better or worse, became the "tour dad.” Jimmy may not have grown up as a Tooth & Nail kid, but he was a perfect fit to continue the tradition of Solid State bands who would bring the intensity to the mission of mosh and ministry; he even ended up working at the label for a season! Jimmy Ryan - Behind: Autobiography of a Musical Shapeshifter... with TRE´s Giles Brown
I jumped off the couch when I saw Mark O'Brien walk onscreen in Marriage Story starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. I had interviewed Mark back in 2018 when he was fresh off the set of the Oscar-nominated Arrival, starring Amy Adams, and I've been following his career ever since. Mark plays the unstable Jimmy Ryan in the Ben Affleck/Matt Damon produced City on a Hill starring Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge. Georgina also has a recurring role in the Boston-based drama, but I truly fell for her in Baker and the Beauty. She plays Piper, best friend to Noa (Nathalie Kelley) in the Netflix show that rated number 1. She is pure light. It was such a joy chatting with them about their marriage story, their hilarious proposal mix-up, and the trick they played on their wedding guests. We talk parenting, red carpets, A-list Hollywood parties and skincare hacks Georgina picked up from Nathalie Kelley. Mark wrote and directed his first film THE RIGHTEOUS, which will make its World Premiere at Fantasia Festival August 15 & 18th 2021. Get info and tickets here. Mark is also upcoming in the highly anticipated feature BLUE BAYOU (opposite Alicia Vikander and Justin Chon). The film made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival this summer and will be released in the US on September 17th. BLUE BAYOU is a moving and timely story of an American family fighting for their future. Mark plays Ace, a police officer, whose moral compass drives the film's central conflict- choosing between family or what he's legally bound to do. Mark's performance in this film is incredibly moving and some of the most gut-wrenching and impactful moments. Watch the trailer here. CSI: Vegas is set to debut on CBS on October 6, 2021 so stay tuned! Follow Georgina and Mark on IG. Follow Flipflops on IG. Follow me on IG.

If you've been watching City on a Hill this year on Showtime there is no doubt you've been riveted by Mark's portrayal of Jimmy Ryan, the slippery brother to Jonathan Tucker's Frankie Ryan. But what you'll know after listening to our conversation is that, not unlike every other guest on 10,000 "No"s, the quality of his work is mostly the result of Mark's sheer will, passion and tenacity. He's been a series regular on AMC's critically acclaimed Halt and Catch Fire, Amazon's The Last Tycoon, and did six years prior to moving to the US in his native Canada on the CBC series Republic of Doyle, for which he was nominated for two Canadian Comedy Awards for Best Actor in a Television Series as well as a nomination for Best Director of a Television Series (they let him behind the camera because he's also an Award Winning Filmmaker for several short films he's written, directed, produced, edited and starred in). He's also starred in Denis Villenueve's Arrival, The Front Runner opposite Hugh Jackman directed by Jason Reitman, Noah Baumbach's next untitled project, opposite Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. But the real joy of this conversation is the wisdom and experience and the lessons that we can all learn from the journey Mark took from the tiny town of Paradise in Newfoundland all the way to Hollywood. SHOW NOTES: How Mark landed City on a Hill and why it’s such a special role for him, (4:05). “So I booked my own flight from Atlanta to New York, put myself up in a hotel for two days and literally just went over it and over it and over it and over it...,” (11:05). “I wanted a role like this for as long as I could remember...”, (11:41). “If things were coming easily to me... ... hand me anything.“ (14:13). “If there’s something more interesting you can do...”, 16:53). “Things seep in you sometimes don’t know where they come from...”, (18:20). Growing up in a tiny community with no connections to show business, (23:10). “We would edit with two VCRs... ... a way we can do it”, 25:08 – 26:08). After all of his filmmaking, not getting into film school and having to go with the flow, (28:20). With no agent and not much happening locally, Mark catches a crazy break.... that takes a year, (30:58). “I knew I could do it...”, (32:48). Going into massive debt to make movies when nothing was paying him, (35:30). Watching Edward Norton in Primal Fear and thinking, “oh, that’s a performance,” (38:10). “Eventually someone’s gonna think I can do it the way I think I can do it,” (39:34). PWI - Passion Will Inform, (40:02). “If you have passion, Will and information, you’ll be fine,” (43:11). The move from Canada to Hollywood, (44:10). Why American filmmaking can take more risks than Canadian filmmaking, (45:02). How fatherhood has changed Mark’s work and approach, (48:23). The advantages and disadvantages of two actors in the family (husband/wife), (54:30). How being a filmmaker has helped Mark understand “no”s as an actor, (57:36). The secret to Mark’s chamelian-like shifts with accents and vibe, (1:01:00). “Quote about Stella Adler and imagination and films with buddies”, (1:01:40 – 1:02:28). Discussion about Gary Oldman and choices as an actor to be big and bold, and sometimes quiet and invisible, (1:05:10). “I still find that you need to know your role in the movie,” (1:05:43). “Advice to younger self... ... the whole time,” (1:14:13 - 1:14:22). Stang is back in Ohio and this is the first show produced back at WCSB-Cleveland, with Princess Wei in the studio, in almost two years! (Save one, last July.) Their microphones sure are better than the ones at Tarzan's, and the telepathic connection with Perennial Guest Star Lonesome Cowboy Dave is vastly improved by closer proximity to his lair in Ashtabula, Ohio. In this Internet version, there is some banter with outgoing DJ Brother Love, as he welcomes us back to the station, and then there's the standard completely nonstandard twenty minutes of canned but utterly new (to Stang anyway) music and Lemurian collages, plus a new "media barrage" recipe from Rev. Elvis Martini. Rev. Uncle Dr. Onan Canobite delivers a killer Brag at the beginning, and he also suggested the music: a song about Jack Parsons by The Claypool Lennon Delerium, and a Slack-centric song by Big Audio Dynamite II. At the very end are instrumentals by Jimmy Ryan and Onan. Four of the tracks in this show had the word "dog" in the file names. Sample sentences from the live discussion: "If we were sick enough to think of it as a joke, somebody else was already sick enough to actually do it." "The voices you've been hearing aren't ours." "Sign away the memories of whatever you're signing away, so you don't miss it." "Praise the Holy Goats.

It's a Puzzling Slack Sandwich, made with Hour of Slack Regular Bread on the top and bottom, but with a creamy nougat center of Puzzling Evidence. Ingredients: Puzzling Evidence, Gary G'Broagfran, Lonesome Cowboy Dave, Eohippus Lovechild, Princess Wei, Ivan Stang, The Rudy Schwartz Project, The Psycho Skeletons, Jimmy Ryan, LeMur, and the collages of Cool Hand Chris.
Thanks to Rev. Argus Faux for recording, somehow, the 8 hours of "radio" that happened at 20X-Day starting just before midnight, July 4, "2017," and ending about the time the world was supposed to end. It's all on an MP3 file that is EIGHT HOURS LONG, called "Suboxene Bloodstream Podcrust 3_01." The LAST four hours of it seems to be playbacks of weird edited canned SubGenius audio edits, but the first four hours feature that smooth talker Rev. Anna Maul and a rotating roster of "co-hosts" such as Rev. peas, Dr. Shoggoth and especially Rev. Fanboy (her most coherent co-host by far). The section we have started working with here is the first half of Hour Two. We have removed a few stretches of truly inside jokes, but otherwise it's unmolested. This episode also includes music by The Rudy Schwartz Project, Rev. Jimmy Ryan, Lothar and the Hand People, and The Rainmakers, and an intro barrage by Rev. Cool Hand Chris. Stang also explains his little sister's new vocabulary words for the various feathers on a dog, and reads some interesting sections from a National Geographic article about alcohol and human evolution, with background music by Shpongle.
That's our favorite quote by Rev. Argus Faux, who is not in this show! It starts with new music by The Rudy Schwartz Project, Xposed 4Heads, The Psycho Skeletons and Rev. Jimmy Ryan, with two very early Mothers of Invention classics. Then it's live Show with Lonesome Cowboy Dave calling in. We will admit that one thing that makes this episode different from most is that Rev. Stang was a bit tipsy, having come to the show from a memorial service that went a little longer and involved a bit more wine than Rev. Stang is used to. In fact it's the first time in decades that Stang has done a show while under the influence of anything! Dave claimed he thought Stang was unusually lively and organized, but that was an illusion.
The Flyin' Ryan Brothers (Johnny & Jimmy Ryan) are interviewed for the Guitar Trax show by Multi-Emmy award winning guitarist Brian Tarquin. GUITAR TRAX hosted by Brian Tarquin will feature in- depth interviews with today’s hottest guitar legends and airs every Monday night from 10pm-12pm on WFIT 89.5FM on the Florida space coast. Tarquin is an multi Emmy award winning composer/guitarist. He has won 3 Emmy's for “Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for a Drama Series” and has been nominated for an Emmy 6 times. In 2006 SESAC honored him with the Network Television Performance Award. Tarquin first graced the Top Billboard Charts with the commercial release: This is Acid Jazz, Vol. 2 on Instinct Records, followed by several solo jazz albums, which charted Top 10 at Contemporary Jazz Radio. Brian has appeared on 40 releases, selling over 140,000 records in his career. In 2016, Tarquin’s release Guitars For Wounded Warriors was nominated for Best Album by the Independent Music Awards, which showcases Tarquin’s guitar prowess along side such world-class shredders as, Steve Morse, Billy Sheehan, Gary Hoey, Bumblefoot (Gun n Roses), Reb Beach (Whitesnake), Hal Lindes (Dire Straits), Chris Poland (Megadeth) and Chuck Loeb. The album features exclusively composed tracks by Tarquin, inspired by those military soldiers who fought for our country. Tarquin also produced and engineered bassist Randy Coven’s last record, Nu Groove featuring Leslie West in 2010.
With Dammett the hound dog snoring at his side, Rev. Stang preaches from a prophetic chunk of The Bobliographon that was written in 1980 but sounds even more frighteningly accurate today. Before that, however, there are classic songs from The Swingin' Love Corpses and The Rudy Schwartz Project and new instrumentals from Dr. Shoggoth, Rev. Jimmy Ryan, and the Psycho Skeletons. We also hear he second half hour of a 19X-Day live show at Wisteria featuring Dr. Hal, Rev. Baby Bear and Rev. Argus Faux as they discuss, among other things, the bizaarre items brought for the Bulldada Auction. Note: Many listeners will be glad to know that the asshole isn't mentioned in this episode.
It sounds just like a regular WCSB Hour of Slack, but it's not one! The live part where Lonesome Cowboy Dave calls in was the first episode recorded in our newly upgraded Tarzan's Radio Station, now located in the living room at Stang Ranch, in extremely rural Stang County, Texas. The setting is different, being festooned with mounted large dead mammal heads instead of punk band bumper stickers, but we still recorded it on Sunday at 9 p.m. EST just like always (8 p.m. in Texas), and we allowed no re-takes, thus making it like a real radio broadcast -- which it will be soon our beloved stations. The first half has the classic song "High on Dokstok Mountain" by The Swingin' Love Corpses and other music by Rev. Jimmy Ryan, Psycho Skeletons and Rev. Experimental, Please, but most is from 19X-Day with some great live radio spouting by Dr. Hal, Rev. Baby Bear, and Rev. Argus Faux (Stang being otherwise occupied, as you'll hear) and some Thorazine Urine Podcrust music-ranting-commercials by a cast of thousands but with Revs. Anna Maul, Faux and Shoggoth being the loudest.
Introducing the great song, "Superpsychonaziracisttrumpispsychopathic" by Rev. Jimmy Ryan. We really did move the whole station to the 9th MegaFisTemple Lodge on Dokstok Mountain, Stang Ranch, Stangsville, Texas. We will include Lonesome Cowboy Dave by phone in future shows produced there, but tonight we're playing all manner of leftover stuff, spillovers, recent SubGenius Head Launching News commentary from Radio Synaesthesia on WCSB, some poetry by Rev. Andrew Genus from 18X-Day, some Charles Dawkins remixed by Rev. Experimental, Please, and part two of the second 19 X-Day show with Dr. Howland Owl and Rev. Susie the Floozie (both of whom have hosted their own SubGenius radio shows for decades, in San Francisco and Atlanta respectively). Stang and Dr. Hal share news of Stang's favorite local neighborhood Creationist Museum, and plans for a competing roadside attraction at Stang Ranch involving fossil alien, devil and SubGenius skeletons. "NOAH'S ARK SANK HERE $5!"
First up are some good samples from 19X-Day: two memorable new songs by St. Andrew the Impaled and Rev. Amy MmHmm, and two new improvised rants by Revs. Faux and Stang with guitar god backing (Lord Angry Larry and Lord Rock God). We also have a DEVO cover that Rev. Bleepo Abernathy had something to do with. Captain Ahab (Gregory Peck) spouts off about that darn old whale, or maybe "Bob." And Rev. Jimmy Ryan rawks. But the focus of the live talk part of the show are two songs from an ancient 45 rpm record by The Chronics, a punk band of some reknown from the late 1970s that featured our favorite lonesome cowboy, Dave, when he was a tiny little youth. Dave instructs us about The Chronics and reveals yet more secrets about his surreal life among the corruptigating worms.
First up is the amazing brand new Rudy Schwartz Project song, "It's Time for Trump." We think this might become a widely replayed song. We have new music and a new rant from new contributors Rev. Experimental and Rev. Watt deFalk, respectively; two Rev. Jimmy Ryan pieces; Rev. Bleepo Abernathy covers the TMBG song "Am I Awake?" and we get two songs from Xposed 4Heads and one from The Fantastic Plastics, both of whom performed at the 2016 DEVOtional in Cleveland the night before this show was recorded, and about which StangDoe rhapsodize at length when Lonesome Cowboy Dave calls in. Subjects: The Bathroom People. SubGenius Horror Hosts and the OSI74 ROKU channel of SubGeniusly programming. Stang's health report. The insanity of the electorate. When the FBI caravan comes to town. When Dave got beaten by cops for three hours. ((Background music is all by CyberChump's "Their Moment of Perfect Happiness" (related to Xposed 4Heads).)) P.S. Stang was wrong, the first movie version of “I Am Legend” was titled “The Last Man on Earth”.
Cleveland musician Charleston Okafor was finishing up his show African Abstract on WCSB when he asked incoming DJs Rev. Ivan Stang and Princess Wei R. Doe for their opinions about Trump and Clinton. Politically biased ranting ensued and then continued during a long stretch of live show during which Lonesome Cowboy Dave forgot to call in. Long story short, Stang came up with plenty of excuses to unleash his Inner Dumbass. Dave finally did call in. Interspersed is music both old and new by, variously, Xposed 4heads, The Psycho Skeletons, LeMur, The Great Groovy Neptune, The Rudy Schwartz Project, Doug 3, The Fantastic Plastics, and Rev. Jimmy Ryan. The beginning with Charleston Okafor is much longer on the Internet version than on the radio version, which is always cut down to just under one hour.
Rampant theological unseemliness abounds in this free-for-all-except-the-slaves. Lonesome Cowboy Dave, out of the hospital again, gets us all worked up about God's dress. Terrible news of the day is discuss-ted. P.R. Gnus returns. We hear quotations from The Enchiridion of Epictetus, ancient philosophy recently republished by A Man of Letters (Onan Canobite), and we learn all about the historical Cleopatra from Hal and Philo. Old music from ESO joins new from The Rudy Schwartz Project, The Fantastic Plastics, Rev, Jimmy Ryan, Rural War Room and Miss Murphy the Bearded Lady. Also, the word of "Bob" Dobbs and the Church of the SubGenius.
Lonesome Cowboy Dave was sick, so this is a Daveless live show, with Rev. Stang reading cool stuff such as a great rant by The Good Rev. Roger, and more of the juicy parts from Gulliver's Travels (1726). Also featured is music by and a discussion about the recent Sanza music CD of Halim "Pharoah" El-Dabh and Ron "Pyrosonic" Slabe. Instead of Dave and Stang blabbering, it's Dr. Hal and Dr. Drummond from an old Puzzling Evidence show. The music however is all new from The Fantastic Plastics, The Rudy Schwartz Project, The Psycho Skeletons, Rev. Jimmy Ryan and Rural War Room. The RWR pieces especially will rip your head in twain if you listen in headphones or brainbuds.
Rev. Stang reads selections from Gulliver's Travels -- the passages in which Gulliver needs to go to the bathroom, but the bathrooms are all either too small or too large. Lonesome Cowboy Dave provides his own insights into the great Jonathan Swift novel of 1726. Stangs gets all worked up about Trump and the value of boredom. First, though, there's a great rant by Rev. Susie the Floozie about "Bob," "Bob" hymns by Rev. Bleepo Abernathy and Mark Mothersbaugh, two count 'em two new Rudy Schwartz Project pieces, Jimmy Ryan guitar, and some discussion of haters by Dr. Philo Drummond and Dr. Hal on The Puzzling Evidence Show.
First live show from WCSB in six months! The Daves and StangDoes invent several new languages, partially inspired by the book "Southern Sayin's for Yankees and Other Immigrants." Before that, however, there is an amazing collage by Rev. Susie the Floozie about "Bob" and Connie, and new music is unveiled by The Rudy Schwartz Project (covering The Shaggs!!!), Rev. Jimmy Ryan and Rural War Room, plus a brand new "Bob" hymn by Rev. Morgan Gutentag. There are also some cold, wet sound effects and a canned recording from Stang Ranch about the Stang Ranch dinosaur tracks and what other creatures may be leaving footprints in those parts.
Our first show recorded and mixed at the Dokstok Mountain studios in the 9th MegaFisTemple Lodge at Stang Ranch, Stangsville, Stang County, Texas. In fact, all of this show except for the credits -- and the music -- was recorded outdoors. The music is all new: a fresh and topical "Bob" hymn by Dr. Morgan Gutentag, two truly horrifying cover songs by The Rudy Schwartz Project (from the new CD "Sunshine Supershits"), two from Rev. Jimmy Ryan and a wild instrumental by The Psycho Skeletons. The ranch location recordings feature fossil discoveries, bone wars, and the debuts of the Stang Ranch Goats and the StangDoe grandchildren.
