How does the gospel transcend cultural understandings like guilt/innocence, honor/shame? In this episode, Alex is joined by longtime friend of the show, Dr. E.D. Burns, a missionary, author, and ABWE's Executive Director for Training & Development. E.D. argues that many modern missionary methods fall into error by beginning with culture rather than Scripture. When missionaries adapt the message to perceived cultural needs: fear of spirits, desire for honor, community belonging, they risk redefining the gospel according to those felt needs instead of the Bible's central categories of sin, wrath, substitutionary atonement, and the imputed righteousness of Christ. Dr. Burns illustrates how hyper-contextualized approaches can subtly blend works and faith, especially in cultures comfortable with karmic or performance-based religion. True gospel communication, he argues, must highlight penal substitution, justification by faith alone, and the supernatural transformation of the heart. I am joined in this podcast by Anne Fadiman to discuss her classical book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, her account of the cross-cultural conflicts between a Hmong family and the American medical system. The book won a National Book Critics Circle Award, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and a Salon Book Award.Published in 1997, the book has attained classic status within medicine. Its contents and lessons remain relevant for contemporary medical practice, and this is why I listed it amongst the important book's this podcast explores.Anne explored the tragedy that evolved when Hmong refugees in the United States interacted with their health centre. At the centre of the saga is their young daughter with refractory epilepsy. Anne explores the transcultural failures that marred the interactions between the two sides, and almost fatally compromised the girl's life.Anne Fadiman is Professor in the Practice of Creative Writing, and Francis Writer-in-Residence at Yale University. The former editor of The American Scholar and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Fadiman is also the author of two essay collections, Ex Libris and At Large and At Small, and a memoir, The Wine Lover's Daughter.

Greetings Glocal Citizens! My guest this week and I go way back to the days of carefree Saturdays and Brooklyn Street festivals, before adulting was the order of our days. Fast forward and today, Dr. Shartriya Collier is an Associate Dean and Full Professor at the School of Education at Nevada State College (NSC), where she leads and supports a diverse and dynamic faculty and student body. She has over 21 years of experience in education spanning from PK-20 to adult education, with a focus on curriculum and instruction, teacher and faculty development, and student success. As the Founding Director of NSC Sankofa and now as founder of Maximal Development Education, LLC, she designs and implements programs utilizing culturally responsive and social justice practices to equip Black students for academic and socioemotional success; as well as developing transformative curriculum and resources designed to provide culturally responsive, equity-focused learning tools that lead to optimal self-actualization for every person, child, and family unit. In this episode we speak with East-West Psychology chair Debashish Banerji to discuss the foundations of a new concentration in the EWP department titled Asian Contemplative and Transcultural Studies (ACTS). Debashish shares his vision of a postcolonial pedagogy in which to ground this discourse, and we discuss how this concentration can situate academic and creative approaches to posthuman world-making. He shares the importance of understanding Asian contemplative traditions in critical relationships to the forces of western globalization and neoliberal capitalism which overdetermine Asian cultures through unconscious structures such as orientalist essentialization, reduction, and projection. Debashish illustrates this idea by describing how a western understanding of Yoga asana within the holistic health and well-being culture industry has been largely appropriated, co-oped by capital, and deterritorialized from its historical roots in which Indian yogasana was initially a micro-political praxis of subjective freedom and self-making based on the goals of anti-colonialist struggles. We ask how the potentials and traces of previous cultural renaissances and revolutions can productively aid in an aspiration to build a new posthuman habitus while avoiding the dangers of being folded back into dependance upon regimes of capital. Debashish speaks of the importance of the arts in ACTS, and shares how the arts can provide affective experiences which can open one to new liminal languages and performative and experimental concepts which can aid in psycho-cosmological world-making. Debashish Banerji is the Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and the Doshi Professor of Asian Art at the California Institute of Integral Studies. He is also the Program Chair for the East-West Psychology department. Prior to CIIS, he served as Professor of Indian Studies and Dean of Academics at the University of Philosophical Research, Los Angeles. He has taught as adjunct faculty at the Pasadena City College, University of California, Los Angeles and University of California, Irvine. His interests lie in postmodern, postcolonial and cross-cultural approaches to Indian philosophy, psychology and culture. Banerji has curated close to fifteen exhibitions of Indian and Japanese art. He has authored and edited around ten books and art catalogs on major figures of "the Bengal Renaissance" such as the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, the artist Abanindranath Tagore and the spiritual thinker Sri Aurobindo; on Critical Posthumanism, Yoga Psychology and on a variety of creative and art-related projects. She has been working in the health care industry for almost 12 years, and started her nursing career as a med-surg bedside nurse on an Ortho, Trauma, and Surgical Specialty Unit. It was through that experience in the med-surg unit where she discovered a passion for education, and pursued a master's degree. She is a lifelong learner, and loves to teach.  Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, she's not all work, and definitely enjoys play! She loves to travel, and tries to plan as many vacations each year as she can with family and friends. Alissa loves to read, listen to podcasts, and geek out to documentaries and crime shows on the weekends. She's a total fair weather fan when it comes to Utes Football, but will cheer in all the right places, or get mad when her husband tells her to during a game.    Caroline Ashman, MSN, RN, CMSRN was born and raised in England. She had two dreams in life – to become a nurse and live in the United States. She accomplished the first task in 1985 and then in 1991, immigrated to America. She currently serves as a Division Director for Medical-Surgical Education for HCA. She has also been afforded the wonderful opportunity to teach Med Surg Review Courses across the United States and in Europe for AMSN. Collecting air miles and sharing stores along the way, she is thrilled to join the Podcast team and recognize that the specialty of medical surgical nursing is alive and well. Caroline lives with her husband Jimmy, in Tampa, FL and has two grown daughters, Jennifer & Emily.

Both Jussi and I grew up in Rovaniemi, a little town smacked right on the Arctic circle, next to Santa's workshop. While I remained in Finland and learned over the years to make a lot of sawdust, Jussi's path took him to Amman, Dar es Salaam, Muscat, Beirut, Helsinki, and eventually to Boston and New York where he continued building his career as a musician, recently relocating to Amsterdam. But that's just a scratch on the surface! Caroline welcomes Dr. Justin Fontenot and Dr. Susan Swayze for part two of a three-part series about AMSN's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness (DEI) Initiative and the valuable resources available to you.    SPECIAL GUESTS         Dr. Justin Fontenot, DNP, RN, NEA-BC (he/him/his) is a Registered Nurse with 22 years of experience. He started his career in acute care Medical-Surgical nursing and spent the last decade in home care and hospice settings. Dr. Fontenot is currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the LHC Group • Myers School of Nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He serves as the Associate Editor of Teaching and Learning in Nursing and the editor of Med-Surg Nurse Life Magazine. He is a full-time DNP to Ph.D. student at Texas Woman's University. Dr. Fontenot's research focuses on clinical reasoning, educational equity, and health disparities involving LGBTQIA+ people.   Dr. Susan Swayze, B.A., M.A., Ph.D., M.B.A. is a DEI strategist and an expert researcher who combined her two loves to form Diversity Think Tank to help organizations identify transformative solutions and accomplish audacious goals. Susan is a highly sought-after speaker on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion with special emphasis on creating safe spaces to hold conversations related to DEI. Fun fact: Susan gave her first presentation on diversity and inclusion in 1992. More recently, Susan has inspired audiences in Africa, Brazil, Canada, and throughout the U.S. Dr. Swayze teaches research methods and statistics to graduate students and is an accomplished scholar whose research resides at the intersection of Diversity & Inclusion and Teaching & Learning. She has authored more than 50 scholarly works including three edited books.   CO-HOST Caroline Ashman, MSN, RN, CMSRN was born and raised in England. She had two dreams in life – to become a nurse and live in the United States. She accomplished the first task in 1985 and then in 1991, immigrated to America. She currently serves as a Division Director for Medical-Surgical Education for HCA. She has also been afforded the wonderful opportunity to teach Med Surg Review Courses across the United States and in Europe for AMSN. Collecting air miles and sharing stores along the way, she is thrilled to join the Podcast team and recognize that the specialty of medical surgical nursing is alive and well. Lois Barnett was awarded her PhD by SOAS in 2020, funded by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and the British Association for Japanese Studies. Her thesis is entitled 'Consuming the "West": Audiences, Industries, Film and Fashion in Japan (1923-1939)'. She holds a BA in Japanese Studies and an MA in Global Cinemas and the Transcultural, both from SOAS. Her work examines the interaction between the consumer-as-audience-member and Japan's transnational film and fashion industries, taking an interdisciplinary approach which considers the role of dress and the cinema in articulating modernity. Themes appearing in her work include the Modern Girl and Modern Boy, the effect of the onset of sound cinema on costume in the Japanese cinema and the role of body image in marketing sportswear onscreen in the 1930s. Alissa, Caroline, and Chelsea devote an entire episode to blood and patient bleeding as they share their own stories and insights.  CO-HOSTS Alissa Brown, BSN, MSN, RN is a clinical nurse educator from the University of Utah Health. She has been working in the health care industry for almost 12 years, and started her nursing career as a med-surg bedside nurse on an Ortho, Trauma, and Surgical Specialty Unit. It was through that experience in the med-surg unit where she discovered a passion for education, and pursued a master's degree. She is a lifelong learner, and loves to teach.  Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, she's not all work, and definitely enjoys play! She loves to travel, and tries to plan as many vacations each year as she can with family and friends. Alissa loves to read, listen to podcasts, and geek out to documentaries and crime shows on the weekends. She's a total fair weather fan when it comes to Utes Football, but will cheer in all the right places, or get mad when her husband tells her to during a game. Kevin Hofmann is an accomplished writer and public speaker who has a passion for adoption and especially Transracial adoption and enjoys sharing his experiences as a biracial Transracial adoptee to help other adoptive families.Working with the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program,  Kevin serves as a trainer and helps educate foster/adoptive parents across Ohio in the areas of Transcultural parenting, Cultural Diversity, and Search and Reunion.Appearing all over the United States speaking to parents and professionals his perspective and light-hearted yet contemplative view is sought after by many.   Kevin has written articles for several publications including Adoption Families Magazine and is an active blogger for Adoption.com. Kevin will be featured on Nightline ABC in a piece on Transracial adoption.  Kevin's memoir, Growing Up Black In White is presently used as part of several college curricula in the schools of social work and multiculturalism.  Because his story also addresses the impact of race and culture in our society, he uses his story to create open discussions on race and culture as well. Hofmann now lives with his wife and two sons in Toledo Ohio.
