On this episode of BRAVE COMMERCE, Lisa Mann, Managing Director and CMO of Raines International, joins hosts Rachel Tipograph and Sarah Hofstetter to discuss the state of the current talent ecosystem. Lisa shares why she came out of retirement in the middle of the pandemic to take a new job outside her experience in CPG. She says she was attracted to creating a true talent ecosystem, and implementing executive search, assessments, and leadership consulting. Fast forward to today, she says the talent ecosystem she is now a part of is unlike no other and has been since the pandemic started. For instance, she says talent ambitions are big and complex for many companies since they realize that they need to recruit people with the talent and agility to navigate hard economic times. To succeed in the recruitment process, she says interviewers need to mitigate bias, and interviewees need to market themselves like a product. She says it's beneficial for the interviewee to address questions and concerns with the interviewer. She says soft skills are becoming more important for recruiting C-suite executive roles. To lead a team, executives must be well-versed in listening, collaborating, and influencing their team. Key Takeaways: The talent ecosystem has become more complex since the pandemic Preparation from both parties is crucial for interviews Having those soft skills in addition to hard skills is crucial for any leadership position Hosted on Acast. Today Donna Burke and Julie Majovsky are joined by Lisa Mann and Evelyn Garfias to discuss the Parable of the Persistent Widow found in Luke, Mark and Matthew.  We read the Luke version here:Luke 18: 1-8Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.'For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.'”The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them?I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

This week we welcome Eve Rossi with us as she and Lisa Mann bring some insight with a few special stories as to how they brought joy and hope by doing just some simple things. Donna started us off with a quote from St. Theresa (Mother Theresa). She paraphrased by saying that sometimes we feel as though we are just a drop in the ocean and which can feel insignificant. However, without that drop, the ocean would be less than it is. How beautiful to think that Jesus sees us as important even when we do not. And how blessed to know that we are often more important to other people when we saw it as just something insignificant. God uses us in so many ways.

What if the way we engage in politics today works against the changes we seek? One-third of Americans say they spend at least two hours a day on politics. But according to Eitan Hersh, author of the book, Politics is for Power: How to Move beyond Political Hobbyism, Take Action, and Make Real Change, most of that time is spent consuming news, posting to social media, and signing online petitions. Eitan labels these kinds of isolated, predominantly online behaviors "political hobbyism," and he contrasts them with the kinds of activities that can drive real change. He explains that politics "...is about getting power for the things you care about, working with others, having goals, having strategies, and that's just not what's going on for most people who are cognitively engaged in politics." Eitan's book is a primer for anyone who wants to effect political change. In it, he shares inspiring stories of ordinary people working to change the world through everyday political participation.  He also shares steps he's taken to overcome his own political hobbyism and the empathy he has for others like him. He says, "They start thinking of all the excuses in their head for why they shouldn't do things differently: 'I don't have time.' 'I'm not very ideological.' Or whatever their excuses are. Hey, I know those excuses -- those are mine! Here's how I kind of got past them." Eitan Hersh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and at the Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University. He researches and teaches on the topics of civic participation, U.S. elections, and voting rights. The recorder got turned on early this time and when we join the conversation, we were already gabbing. Maybe next time we’ll just be rolling when he walks in the door.

We’re not hiding, we’re just back as audio-only this week. Coming soon, we’re going to be making (at least) one video episode per month. We had so much fun with Kate Power and Steve Einhorn last time that coming up are a series of couples who are also working musicians…Chance Hayden and Shelly Rudolph is one and Lisa Mann and Allen Markel is another…and more. Stay tuned. In Café Artichoke at 2007 SE Powell Boulevard this time is a protest singer. Bill Valenti has had a very diverse life and after several careers he has found himself singing about our current social and political situation. It’s subject rich in song topics. We’ll play a tune of his at the end of the conversation. Regretfully, we had audio problems again…for the last time, we’ve taken steps. But don’t worry, Bill Valenti shines through.

Lisa Mann is a truly gifted performer out of Minnesota, and Lara Price is just plain talented and both are the true epitome of survivorship.....Mann was born in West Virginia, , United States. As a young child she and her sister, Maryann, were moved to Portland, Oregon, from California, as an escape from her abusive father. Somewhat inspired after hearing the bass line of the Imperial Guard music in Star Wars, Mann purchased her first bass guitar at age eleven.Lara Price is a survivor… Born in the war torn country of Vietnam in 1975 and abandoned at birth, Lara became a part of the controversial “Operation Baby Lift”, a mass evacuation of orphans from South Vietnam to the United States. As 90 percent of the orphaned babies did not survive, her journey out of Vietnam to her new home was nothing short of a miracle.

Parkinson’s disease is a complex condition, involving more than just movement. And to ensure the best outcomes and quality of life, people with PD should have a coordinated team of health professionals to help with their physical, social, and emotional needs. Since PD is a progressive disease, this array of health professionals can keep a constant eye on the changing condition and provide appropriate therapies as needs arise. Today, Lisa Mann, the nurse and education director for the Oregon Health and Science University Parkinson’s Center in Portland, a Parkinson’s Foundation Center of Excellence, discusses who should be part of the core team and how other rehab therapists and health care professionals can be brought onto the team as needed.

Then we spend a few minutes with Randy Knight, the creator of the play Ghost Of The Blues which will have a performance on Friday at the Orpheum Theater.  This edition will feature Mud Morganfield, Biscuit Miller, Stacy Brooks, James Armstrong and Bobby Wilson. Sean Pinchin was nominated for a Maple Blues Award for Artist Of The Year in 2014 after his album Rustbucket was released.  His new album, Monkey Brain dropped the beginning of March and Sean & I will chat about his career and his album, a collection of personal struggle and triumph wrapped in some stellar guitar-work. Guy King grew up in Israel but relocated to the US in his early 20’s.  Since then he has worked continuously to build his skills and fan base playing some 200 shows a day.  His latest release, Truth is his Delmark debut and is a collection of originals and reworkings showing Guy’s guitar and vocal prowess. Finally, Lisa Mann will be calling from the road as she makes her way to Memphis for the BMAs.  Nominated for Instrumentalist-Bass (an award she was honored to receive last year) and is also releasing her new album.  We will get to share the new album and speak with Lisa about everything that has been going on in her world.

I told Lisa to include a silent auction item from me…the chance to co-host and select two guests.  Well in the end Lisa was the winning bid – not sure there were any other bids or Lisa has had this deep desire to fulfill her Robin Quivers Radio Role! The two musicians she selected are also from the Portland area…Lisa showing love to her peeps in the northwest. First is Rae Gordon. She was awarded a Muddy Award in 2014 for Best Female Vocalist and is a constant presence in the Northwest Music Scene.  I look forward to learning more about Rae during the show. Kevin Selfe is a Couch Kid and would have been booked for a Couch Kid New Music Segment with the release of his latest, Buy My Soul Back.  When Lisa mentioned his name it was a done deal! As Co-host, Lisa will be asking a lot of the questions and I can guarantee there will be fun galore. Of course we will hear some music from each of these folks. photo of Aly: Tori Ava

Steve Arvey got his beginning in the Blues in Florida during his college years.  He and his band ended up backing Bo Diddley for a few years.  He then returned to Chicago where he backed musicians such as Hubert Sumlin, Jimmy Rogers, and others.  He eventually ended up back in Florida and now performs as a solo artist and with his band The Delta Swamp Rats. Steve and I will examine his journey and listen to his music. Roy Rogers is one of the preeminent slide guitarists performing the Blues today.  He began playing in a band at age 13 and has not stopped performing since then.  He received his first Handy Award nomination in 1985 and has played with John Lee Hooker for 4 years in the 80’s.  Throughout the years he has contributed music to movies and TV, performed with Miles Davis, Taj Mahal and Norton Buffalo among others. His new album is entitled Into The Wild Blue and Roy and I will talk about his long career and the new music. Lisa Mann began her time in West Virginia, but now calls Portland and the Northwest her home.  She is a talented bass guitar player as shown by her 2015 Blues Music Award Win for Instrumentalist Bass, and is also a fabulous vocalist.  Her new album is entitled Move On and Lisa and I will talk about her career and where she is heading. Ted Drozdowski returns with his new Scissormen album, Love & Life. The album will be released on July 31st and we will have a chance to talk with Ted about recording this collection of stories about old bluesmen and coal miners, which was recorded in a tent down a dirt road in the wood on top of a mountain in Pasquo, TN.
