In this book review I consider the idea that what we perceive as reality is in fact an interface much like seeing icons on your desktop. Will physics ever be able to explain consciousness? What if our entire understanding of reality is just an illusion shaped by evolution? Could the universe be a sophisticated virtual reality created by our own minds for our own good? And does free will exist after all? Joining me today to explore these profound questions is none other than Donald Hoffman! Donald Hoffman is a renowned philosopher, famous TED talk speaker, cognitive scientist, and deep thinker. He is a professor in the Department of Cognitive Science at the University of California, Irvine, and the author of the provocative book The Case Against Reality. Donald Hoffman is back on Know Thyself today to explore the constraints of time and space, and how they shape our understanding of the world around us. He discusses the "headset analogy" - the idea that our senses act as a kind of cognitive filter, preventing us from directly perceiving the true nature of reality. Donald delves into the paradoxes found in various mathematical theorems, and his newest research on "conscious agents" and how it relates to the Gaia hypothesis. The significance of mystical experiences and their potential to reveal truths about the nature of reality is also covered. Hoffman also opens up about his thoughts on reincarnation, the relationship between science and spirituality, and the possibility of artificial intelligence becoming truly conscious. It's pretty normal that you think of reality being the world around us, the tangible things you see and interact with. You probably even include and make space for how your emotions influence perception and tie that into what creates your reality. Donald Hoffman is joining Tom for another mind-bending episode to challenge if we're actually living in a false reality. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist that has argued against reality and the limitations of spacetime. Some questions being posed in this episode that will stretch your beyond your limits are: -What is beyond spacetime? -What is the true structure of objective reality? -Is it possible evolution has shaped us in a way that guides our behaviors and therefore how we see objective reality? -His idea of comparing our current reality to that of living in a virtual headset is being taken to the next few levels up and exploring the strategies we use to survive the game of life. Joel Bouchard will discuss the topic of getting in the flow with me today. Joel Bouchard is a doctoral student in psychology at Liberty University in Virginia, a multi-instrumentalist record producer, author, painter, Army veteran, business leader, local government official, and host of the philosophy podcast From Nowhere to Nothing. His podcast explores complex themes such as the messy, misapplied, and contradictive nature of tribalism, commitment as a concept through ontological and ethical paradigms, and the life-encompassing yet nuanced concept of work. Joel's diverse background includes discussions on shadow from the perspectives of physics, mythology, psychology, and cultural tradition, as well as debates on substantivalism and relationalism in defining locations. His intellectual curiosity extends to examining Donald Hoffman's ideas on reality and consciousness from “The Case Against Reality,” and exploring metaphysical, epistemological, and ontological aspects of consciousness through documentary scenes. Joel also engages in abstract discussions on the ontological impact of the present and delves into the past from both metaphysical and historical perspectives. His multifaceted experiences and deep philosophical inquiries make him a dynamic and insightful voice in contemporary philosophical discourse. My friends refer to me as the robot because I generally tend to be pretty unemotional. And, you know, that's good. It's good to be even-keeled, but it can also be negative if you freeze or shut down when in negative circumstances. So, the biggest impact for me is that it's helped me express happiness and joy and also to be able to identify with emotions without getting caught up in them without being angry. I can identify that this is an angry emotion and a justified emotion. Then I can decide how I should act with this information. Thoughts On Breathing As someone who's pretty new to meditation, breathing is something that I still struggle with a little bit. They tell you that you're not supposed to breathe loud, but I always find myself breathing loud because I'm using that to focus my attention. In Zen meditation, this is a subject of controversy. Some Zen masters say you can count your breaths, while others say don't. So I mix the two. You know, for the first 10, I count the in-breath and the out-breath, one, two, and then for the next 10, I only count the out-breath. So in one in two, then after that, I go to not counting. But I find myself still breathing very deeply. I think it helps with relaxation and focus. Sometimes, it can steal attention away from the internal focus on what's happening in the mind. Bullying Story I believe bullying is a problem rooted in a lack of mindfulness on the bully's part. I have a story about being mindful from the other side. During my time in the army, we had an exercise in basic training where we used pugil sticks, like on American Gladiators, to fight each other. The drill sergeant insisted everyone participate, but I didn't volunteer because I didn't want to fight. At the end, the drill sergeant singled me out to fight the biggest guy, nicknamed the Widowmaker, who was six foot five and 280 pounds. Though I didn't want to fight, I had been mindful and observed the fights closely. When it was my turn, I pretended to cower, turned to the side, and ducked down. As he came close, I jammed the end of my stick into his helmet, causing him to fall. I won the fight. This experience taught me that mindfulness can help you navigate difficult situations, even when facing a bigger, more imposing opponent. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive psychologist and popular science author, and in this episode, he talks about our perceptions of reality and then makes us question it. Do we see the world as it truly is? How can we understand the relationship between the physical world and consciousness? Drawing from his inspirations and his own books and papers, Don teaches us about evolutionary theory and how it shapes our perceptions into illusions. In short, how has evolution made our brains perceive reality the way we do? Cool right? I definitely thought so. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I did! Joe and Rolf discuss the ideas of perceptual psychologist Donald Hoffman, who has argued that our perceptual systems have no access to reality, since evolution is driven by fitness functions, not objective truth. He has also argued that our perception is a user interface (like a desktop on a computer, or a VR headset), and that objects such as the moon don't exist when we are not apprehending them. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist at UC Irvine and author of 'The Case Against Reality.' He believes that the world we experience is an illusion, whilst ultimate reality is composed of networks of conscious agents. Keith and Philip probe Professor Hoffman's view from their very different perspectives on the nature of consciousness. Here's the paper we discuss at length which argues that Donald's argument from evolution is self-defeating: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11229-022-04021-1 Here's Donald's recent co-written paper in which the authors attempt to ground physics in networks of conscious agents: https://www.mdpi.com/1099-4300/25/1/129

We experience, thus we exist. Our conscious perceptions form the foundation of our self-awareness. They play a vital role in shaping our understanding of ourselves as sentient beings: present, alive, and significant. However, what is the origin of consciousness, and how does the process of experiencing sensations and developing a sense of awareness contribute to its emergence? Is this capacity limited solely to humans? Do other animals share this ability? And what about the potential for future machines? In his book “Sentience: The Invention of Consciousness” neuropsychologist Professor Nicholas Humphrey uncovers the evolutionary history of consciousness and argues that consciousness evolved to make us feel that life is worth living. Drawing upon his groundbreaking research on social intelligence, as well as his intriguing findings on blindsight in monkeys and profound insights into the philosophy of mind, Professor Humphrey outlines a fascinating narrative to unveil the evolutionary origins of consciousness. In this episode of Bridging the Gaps, I speak with Professor Nicholas Humphrey. Nicholas Humphrey, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the London School of Economics, is a theoretical psychologist, who studies the evolution of intelligence and consciousness. He was the first to demonstrate the existence of “blindsight” in monkeys. He has also studied mountain gorillas with Dian Fossey in Rwanda, and proposed the celebrated theory of the “social function of intellect,”. His research holds profound significance in exploring and unravelling the mysteries of the mind and its evolutionary underpinnings. We start off by discussing the enigma surrounding the emergence of consciousness and the challenges encountered when attempting to understand its nature and origins. Professor Nicholas Humphrey's book introduces the intriguing concepts of cognitive consciousness and phenomenal consciousness, which we thoroughly explore during our conversation. We then discuss in detail the concept of sentience as presented and explained in this book. We delve into the evolutionary perspective, examining why consciousness became an adaptive trait and how it evolved within living organisms. An intriguing question arises: if our early animal ancestors possessed cognitive consciousness, how did it transition into phenomenal consciousness? Could there exist an observable threshold, such as brain size, neuron count, or processing capacity, at which cognitive consciousness transforms into phenomenal consciousness? We then discuss the fascinating notion of blindsight and its relevance to the theory of consciousness presented in the book. We then delve into the complex concept of sensations, exploring how the firing of neurons and the movement of electric signals within the brain give rise to our subjective experience of consciousness. Lastly, we explore the possibility of consciousness emerging within machines, contemplating its potential evolution beyond organic life. He is the author of The Case Against Reality: Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes. In this episode, we focus on The Case Against Reality, and the interface theory of perception. We start by discussing the interface theory of perception, shape as an effective code for fitness, different ways of perceiving “reality”, and what is “real”. We address scientific and philosophical objections to the theory, and epistemological approaches that might differ from empirical science. We talk about simulated realities, and discuss if they are really different from what we normally perceive. We talk about the use of psychedelics; and spirits, ghosts, and gods as experiences. We ask if “truth-seeing” organisms could evolve, and if we could ever perceive objective reality. Finally, we talk about breaking the tension between science and spiritual and religious traditions. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, JONATHAN VISSER, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, MIKKEL STORMYR, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, MORTEN EIKELAND, DR BYRD, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, MAU MARIA, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, ROOFTOWEL, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, PEDRO BONILLA, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Adam Zbegner (PART 2) is a father, husband, and intellectual in recovery. We became friends over twenty years ago from our involvement in a recovery community. We have spent many hours chatting, reviewing books, music, and playing Risk (The Game of Global Domination). Today we meet to discuss a book we decided to read and review this winter titled "The Case Against Reality" How Evolution hid the truth from our eyes by Donald D. Hoffman. See Links Below.BOOK ON AMAZON:https://www.amazon.com/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3ADonald+Hoffman&s=relevancerank&text=Donald+Hoffman&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1Can we trust our senses to tell us the truth?Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. How can it be possible that the world we see is not an objective reality? And how can our senses be useful if they are not communicating the truth? Hoffman grapples with these questions and more over the course of this eye-opening work.Ever since Homo sapiens walked the earth, natural selection has favored perception that hides the truth and guides us toward useful action, shaping our senses to keep us alive and reproducing. We observe a speeding car and do not walk in front of it; we see mold growing on bread and do not eat it. These impressions, though, are not objective reality. Just like a file icon on a desktop screen is a useful symbol rather than a genuine representation of what a computer file looks like, the objects we see every day are merely icons, allowing us to navigate the world safely and with ease. The real-world implications for this discovery are huge. From examining why fashion designers create clothes that give the illusion of a more “attractive” body shape to studying how companies use color to elicit specific emotions in consumers, and even dismantling the very notion that spacetime is objective reality, The Case Against Reality dares us to question everything we thought we knew about the world we see.DONALD D. You probably even include and make space for how your emotions influence perception and tie that into what creates your reality.Donald Hoffman is joining Tom for another mind-bending episode to challenge if we're actually living in a false reality. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive scientist that has argued against reality and the limitations of spacetime. Some questions being posed in this episode that will stretch your beyond your limits are:What is beyond spacetime? What is the true structure of objective reality? Is it possible evolution has shaped us in a way that guides our behaviors and therefore how we see objective reality? His idea of comparing our current reality to that of living in a virtual headset is being taken to the next few levels up and exploring the strategies we use to survive the game of life. Really shallow data structure. Only three-dimensions of space, one dimension of time, we got a cheap headset.”“Reason is telling us its limits. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 If I have a visual experience that I describe as a red tomato a meter away, then I am inclined to believe that there is, in fact, a red tomato a meter away, even if I close my eyes. I believe that my perceptions are, in the normal case, veridical—that they accurately depict aspects of the real world. But is my belief supported by our best science? In particular: Does evolution by natural selection favor veridical perceptions? Many scientists and philosophers claim that it does. But this claim, though plausible, has not been properly tested. In this talk, I present a new theorem: Veridical perceptions are never more fit than non-veridical perceptions which are simply tuned to the relevant fitness functions. This entails that perception is not a window on reality; it is more like a desktop interface on your laptop. I discuss this interface theory of perception and its implications for one of the most puzzling unsolved problems in science: the relationship between brain activity and conscious experiences. --- Prof. Donald Hoffman, PhD received his PhD from MIT, and joined the faculty of the University of California, Irvine in 1983, where he is a Professor Emeritus of Cognitive Sciences. In this episode, Professors Deepa Mani and Bhagwan Chowdhry discuss how researchers use models to make predictions. Predictions that are useful. But it is important not to forget that models are just that, models. They are not reality. They help us survive and thrive but do not necessarily lead us to the truth. So, we must use models with humility.Music AuthorsSong: Pastime Paradise Artist: Ray Barretto Writers: Stevie Wonder#isbfaculty #AtriumTalks #ISBStudios
My guest on today's podcast is Donald Hoffman, a cognitive psychologist and popular science author, and a professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Donald is probably best known for his TED Talk and popular Book, The Case Against Reality. Many of you probably know that I'm deeply interested in understanding the nature of reality and its relationship with technology. In particular, my hunch is that we may be living in a simulation but there is so much more nuance to that hunch that I don't want to just throw it out there that simply. Perhaps it's better if I say less and let you listen to this conversation with Donald Hoffman for yourself.
Donald D. Hoffman is a Professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of The case against reality: Why evolution hid the truth from our eyes. His research on perception, evolution, and consciousness received the Troland Award of the US National Academy of Sciences, the Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution of the American Psychological Association, the Rustum Roy Award of the Chopra Foundation, and is the subject of his TED Talk, titled “Do we see reality as it is?”"This is really what life, I think, is about - learning to not believe your thoughts. Watch your thoughts, see their patterns and learn that you are not at the whim and beck and call of your thoughts. You can watch your thoughts, and you can choose to let go of thoughts and just be present and let go of the complaints. And that then opens up a level of creativity that's surprising. It could be in dance, science, it could be in music, or art. Wherever you have creative expression, letting go of thought and having this balance between thinking and no thinking, going into complete silence and then pulling ideas back for your art, your science, your dance, whatever it might be, is really the dance of life."http://www.cogsci.uci.edu/~ddhoff/The Case Against Realitywww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.org

"In some sense, kids don't have words early on. So they're just seeing without a filter of words. And I even have memories myself as a young child of just the wonder. I remember walking to kindergarten and seeing this bush with all sorts of flowers on it, and all these monarch butterflies on it. And I was completely transfixed. Here I was, five years old, I was looking at magic, and I knew I was looking at magic. And I stayed there so long that I was late to kindergarten. And I learned that I got in trouble for that. So taking time to enjoy the magic, I learned early on was something that would get me in trouble. "For the 30 years, maybe 40 years for some, the dominant view of many cognoscientists, is that consciousness is something that brains create. So most of the processes in our brains are proceeding without any conscious content, so that they're unconscious processes, but a small amount of our brain processes are somehow experiences. And the standard view is that it's a fairly recent, late evolutionary process that led to the experience of conscious experiences in humans and other animals, and perhaps other creatures more generally. My view is different. I think that the standard view that consciousness is a product of brains isn't correct because I think that our best physical theories tell us that space and time are not fundamental. Spacetime is doomed. So that's on the physics side. Physicists are saying that spacetime is not fundamental for very principled reasons, falling out of Einstein's theory of gravity and quantum field theory.”Donald D. "This is really what life, I think, is about - learning to not believe your thoughts. Wherever you have creative expression, letting go of thought and having this balance between thinking and no thinking, going into complete silence and then pulling ideas back for your art, your science, your dance, whatever it might be, is really the dance of life."Donald D. "So the idea of the multiverse, as you all know, is a pretty big idea in physics right now. Many physicists are thinking about interpreting quantum theory in terms of the multiverse or many-worlds interpretation. Max Tegmark, for example, has the idea that there's what he calls a Level IV multiverse. He thinks that mathematics is fundamental. So the fundamental reality is just mathematics, and in some sense, Gödel's incompleteness theorem says that there's endless mathematics. There's no end to mathematical exploration. And so that's Tegmark's multiverse: whatever is mathematically possible is actual."Donald D. Hoffman is a Professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. "I would say one of the most important things I'm learning right now is this balance between conceptual thought, on the one hand, thinking, and stepping out of thought altogether, and just being present in silence. And going back and forth. When I'm present to my environment in silence, then I'm in touch with a deeper intelligence that is not separate from me. It is me, and then I can bring that back into my thinking. But most of our thoughts, if we're not watching our thoughts, most of our thoughts are actually complaints and judgements, and they're dysfunctional. Most of our thinking is automatic and dysfunctional. So learning to let go, to don't believe your thoughts, watch your feelings. This is really what life, I think, is about."Donald D. What is the true nature of reality? Does the objective reality reported back by our senses paint a complete picture of the true reality? Is it possible that the world we see is not objective reality and it is just an interface to a deeper, true reality. In his book “The Case Against Reality: Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes” cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman Challenges leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality. He argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. He presents the evolutionary concept of "Fitness Beats Truth" to demonstrate that evolution very probably moulded our minds for fitness rather than accuracy, resulting in the mismatch between "things-in-themselves" and our perceptions of them. In this episode of Bridging the Gaps I speak with professor Donal Hoffman; we discuss his “Interface Theory of Perception” and dig deep on latest research in cognitive science and perception, and how it relates to our understanding of the true nature of reality. Donald Hoffman is a professor of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. He is a cognitive psychologist and popular science author. His research focuses on perception, evolution, and consciousness. We begin by discussing the present understanding of the hard problem of consciousness. Then we talk about Hoffman's view that all main scientific theories, such as Einstein's theory, theories and our present understanding of Quantum Physics and the theory of natural selection, all inform us that our present approach of trying to understand reality is not working. I then ask him that why in his view we have evolved in a manner that we don't see the real underlying reality and we just perceive a superficial realty. We then discuss in detail his theory and ideas about the nature of reality. We touch upon the question that do we live in a simulation. We also discuss Panpsychism. Finally I ask that how the research on the question of the true nature of reality should proceed. Complement this discussion with “From Consciousness to Synthetic Consciousness: From One Unknown to Another Unknown with David Chalmers” available at: https://www.bridgingthegaps.ie/2015/03/from-consciousness-to-synthetic-consciousness-from-one-unknown-to-another-unknown-with-david-chalmers/ And then listen to “Why You Are Not Your Brain? AY no teacher, ALL THE LIFE IS A LIE!

Don Hoffman is a cognitive psychologist that argues that organisms develop their perception of the world directed towards fitness payoffs and not reality. Everything from our perception of reality is taken in through what Don would relate to a spacetime simulator that we are experiencing through a virtual reality headset. Just as Oculus creates an experience that can make you feel as though you are actually skydiving or on a roller coaster, so is the life we believe to be reality.Order Donald's latest book, ‘The Case Against Reality: https://www.amazon.com/Case-Against-Reality-Evolution-Truth/dp/0393254690 SHOW NOTES:0:00 | Introduction Don Hoffman0:38 | Perception of Reality7:10 | Seeing a VR World11:30 | Spacetime Simulator14:09 | Fundamental Nature of Consciousness19:54 | Headset of Spacetime26:17 | What's Next for SpacetimeQUOTES:“You just think you're opening our eyes and seeing the truth. Et si l'évolution nous avait caché la vérité ? En s'appuyant sur des démonstrations mathématiques, Donald Hoffman démontre que l'espace-temps est l'interface d'homo sapiens, cachant la complexité du monde réel, tel que le font les icônes sur notre ordinateur en nous cachant la complexité des circuits imprimés et voltages. Il va même jusqu'à proposer une solution au problème difficile de la conscience. Un gars sûr. Un épisode à écouter en cétose.

Robert Prentner, PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy currently at the Centre for the Future Mind, Florida Atlantic University, where he conducts research in consciousness studies, molecular physics, natural and artificial intelligence, and philosophy. His current project is “Consciousness and the Emergence of Objects”. Robert and colleagues have been working to explain their theory of consciousness in a mathematically consistent manner. Their group has published several papers on what they refer to as the Interface Theory of Perception using evolutionary game theory and complex mathematics to bring precision to their theories. Prentner's colleague, Donald Hoffman forwarded this ‘Conscious Realism' to the mainstream in his popular book, “The Case Against Reality” (2019).-The Interface Theory of Perception states simply that the reality we experience with our senses is analogous to the desktop interface on your computer. We may see objects in our world and take for granted that our perceptions of that object are a ‘true' representation of what's actually there. But in the Interface Theory of Perception, these objects are merely a useful fiction; an icon that bears no resemblance to the true nature of reality, but one that helps our species live on and propagate our genetic information. Much like how a folder on our computer desktop may appear rectangular and blue, we do not assume for a moment that the contents of that folder are indeed rectangular and blue. In fact, the true nature of our computer interface consists of electric fields, magnetic fields, resistors, voltage toggles and more. If we had to interact with the true nature of our computer desktop, we'd never get any work done. Much like how we pay top dollar for interfaces that simplify this reality in our technology, our perceptual systems have evolved not so that we experience reality as it is, but simply as it's best for us to perceive it. This theory also exists outside of spacetime, meaning that our place in space and time is also just a very useful fiction.-Follow Robert's WorkWebsiteTed TalkDonald Hoffman's "The Case Against Reality"-Follow My WorkWebsiteConsultationInstagramYoutubeSpotifyApple PodcastsLinkedin

Listen now to Future News and Commentary 6.22.2021 More fun space adventures are becoming available. Now you don’t have to blast off in a rocket, just slowly ascend in a balloon, dubbed “Spaceship Neptune,” schmoozing with half a dozen fellow passengers on a trip to upper atmosphere of planet Earth. Looks like fun! Spaceship Neptune will take you to the Stratosphere! And boy, talk radio never really follows an agenda when you have lots of callers! Many listeners were inspired Dr. Donald Hoffman on the case against Realityto check in after our 15 min excerpt of Dr. Donald Hoffman, a UC Irvine neuro-psychologist sharing his model of consciousness based on the metaphor of a 3D computer desktop, a compelling somewhat easy-to-grok model of the most complex thing in the universe, as far as we know..and that is consciousness itself. Everyone has thoughts on the topic and I think you’ll all enjoy riffing off of Dr. Hoffman’s most illuminating metaphor. Enjoy!
INTERFACE RESPONSE SYSTEM: How we respond to the perception of space and time. All day long and to a certain degree during sleep humans experience life through an interface between themselves and all space and time happenings via perception. Is What you see what you get? Now we also know that what we see can be jaded by what we think and how we were programmed. But the idea here around perception is that seeing unveils the potential for believing. When you speak to some of the greatest minds of our times like Donald Hoffman, Cognitive Scientist and author of The Case Against Reality, why Evolution hid the truth from our eyes, you gain access to the latest science of perception. He introduces the idea that what you see is merely what you see. What you get from what you see is merely a rendering or desktop icon of a deeper truth that you don’t need to see as it doesn’t serve you. Then the question pops up as to whether or not what you see even exists in the absence of perception, while you’re not seeing it? What I mean is that things only come into your fields perception while you are looking at them. But when you look away or they go away, do they still exist? This is an extremely powerful concept to entertain because it completely changes the game of perception and our emotional response system to all things space and time. Let’s play through a scenario. So you’re going about your day and something hypothetically GOES WRONG? Say a great client of yours decides to cancel their order of business with you and you perceive this negative act of defiance via email. Naturally, as your goals are focused on business growth and creating time and money freedom this comes as a shock and triggers feelings of despair and challenges your self worth and creates financial worry and stress. These negative feelings not only impact your physical and emotional state but in turn impact those around you and your ability to grow that day. All due to your perception of what happened to you? Your good friend consoles you and says not to worry one door closes another opens and screw them. Their the unlucky ones fir losing you. Maybe that feels a little better as it creates a new perception that perhaps it just wasn’t a good fit. Then as time goes by you find out that your client isn’t unhappy with your service ans wanted to stay with you although they are facing financial hardship due to their own circumstances and this moves you into a state of empathy and sympathy. Again changing your perception and the cloud is lifted and you pull up your pants snd go back to work, find a new client and leave the door open in support and friendship to the one you lost for a time they are able to return. Letting them know you are their for them. Here’s the thing. All these things and feelings are based on perceptions and you can see how they have a dramatic impact on our lives. Imagine if you could control your perceptions and see the world and all the happenings of space and time in a way that unveils the potential that what you see is only what you are seeing but not necessarily what you are getting? Or what’s actually happening. The name of the game is recognizing the idea of controlling our INTERFACE RESPONSE SYSTEM. Meaning how we perceive and respond to the uncontrollable and potentially unreal happenings of space and time. PS this is only complicated because natural selection has evolved our human senses so that they can create a perception of reality that works for us and carries us forward in progress. Our perceptions of reality we’re not shaped to unveil the absolute truth. They were shaped to see what we need to see to procreate and evolve. Can we work on controlling our perceptions so we don’t get off track? Yes. So we learn conscious techniques to help us like stoicism which teaches us to pause and access happenings to see what’s really happening, whether they matter or not and delineate what we can and can’t control? In my book I unveil a similar technique called WHOLEOGRAPHIC VISION which teaches us to take inventory snd see happenings from all sides before reaction and creating a label of your perception. So let’s step back and look at this whole perception game? We can now become mindful that our entire life experience is based on perceptions. Which means that the secret to success, fulfillment and happiness lies in our response system to the happenings in life and that response system is eon or lost in our ability to control our perceptions? Science and mathematics are now saying that their is a zero possibility that what we see and call reality is the actual truth and whilst you are not seeing things they no longer exist? So nothing exists in the absence of our perception of it? So the secret to access lies in our ability to understand that we are the author and director of this movie the moment we grab control of our perceptions and decide how we are going to see the world. Is this perhaps is what some are optimistic snd some pessimistic. Why some are fear based and some are fearless? Some confident and some un confident? Yes. See, science now tells us that what you see is not what you get. What you see is merely an interface between you and this game of life. Just like the icons on a desktop. They help you navigate and communicate with something bigger. The computer, the internet etc.. I love this idea and remaining open to it as it helps me realize that I decide and control how my life experience unfolds. I control the fantasy and thus the outcome. If someone observes you calling a bad thing good or describing an event different than they see it? Their simply running their perception program and unaware of it. Unconscious to this. Remember this. It’s the ignorance of reality that enables one to control reality. Nobody likes to lose control. So you share this knowledge not by lecturing them but Demonstrating how you respond with no buy in or just an open curious compassion and a pause to consider and decide on how you see it.
Would you take the BLUE PILL and proceed with your life as you know it? Or the RED PILL and unveil a truth that takes you down the rabbit hole into a completely new place of discovery and growth? What if everything you thought was true about reality was completely off? A very special interview with one of my idols professor DONALD D. HOFFMAN! Our topic is based on his best selling book THE CASE AGAINST REALITY! DONALD D. HOFFMAN is a professor of cognitive science at the University of California, Irvine, where he studies consciousness, visual perception and evolutionary psychology using mathematical models and psycho physical experiments. His research subjects include facial attractiveness, the recognition of shape, the perception of motion and color, the evolution of perception, and the mind-body problem.
Join Riz as he talks with Donald Hoffman, professor emeritus at University of California-Irvine,and the author of The Case Against Reality:Why Evolution Hid the Truth From Our Eyes. They discuss his idea of conscious agents, why spacetime is dead, why reality is like being in a virtual headset, and why all three of the fundamental theories our scientists subscribe to - general relativity, quantum mechanics and evolution - all point to the idea that what we think of as "reality" is not really reality. Moreover, Hoffman talks about the limits of scientific theories and why most of our theories are probably wrong. This is a lively discussion you'll not want to miss!

Do we see reality as it is? I discuss this question with Donald Hoffman who is professor emeritus at the University of California, Irvine. He studies consciousness and perception from an evolutionary point of view. His research has led him to make a bold claim that while we do not yet know what the underlying reality could be like. Rather, reality as we know it now – including space, time, and objects – is a useful fiction that evolution invented for us.His TED talk on our perception of reality has been watched over 3 million times, and in his recent pop-science book for the wider audience, The Case Against Reality, he makes a convincing case on how our perceived reality is an illusion that has evolved to help us survive and reproduce.1:46 – Towards building a mathematical understanding perception5:12 – Evolutionary game theory to help understand perception6:26 – Computing truth is expensive, so evolution get rids of it8:00 – Mathematical proof that evolution doesn't tune us to see the truth9:56 – David Marr's ideas and inverse optics11:30 – What are fitness payoffs?

Challenging leading scientific theories that claim that our senses report back objective reality, cognitive scientist Donald Hoffman argues that while we should take our perceptions seriously, we should not take them literally. How can it be possible that the world we see is not objective reality? And how can our senses be useful if they are not communicating the truth? Hoffman grapples with these questions and more over the course of this eye-opening work. Ever since Homo sapiens has walked the earth, natural selection has favored perception that hides the truth and guides us toward useful action, shaping our senses to keep us alive and reproducing. From examining why fashion designers create clothes that give the illusion of a more “attractive” body shape to studying how companies use color to elicit specific emotions in consumers, and even dismantling the very notion that spacetime is objective reality, The Case Against Reality dares us to question everything we thought we knew about the world we see.
For all of science's impressive advancements, one problem has stubbornly eluded us: Why do we have consciousness? How does inert unconscious matter give rise to the light of conscious experience? Neuroscientist Donald Hoffman has been pondering this question throughout his career. His thinking has gradually led him to a surprising possibility — that consciousness itself is fundamental to reality. Donald's theory, however, differs from that of the growing number of other scientists and philosophers now arriving at this conclusion. The fundamental nature of reality, Donald theorizes, is comprised of an infinite network of interacting conscious agents. Uniquely, Donald offers a precise mathematical definition of a conscious agent. He believes the theory may be used to reconstruct the universe and existing scientific discoveries purely through the interaction of these units of consciousness. As Donald has gradually become “a student of the math” his theory has led him to consider fantastic possibilities, including the existence of infinitely great minds which exist beyond our realm of perception. Among other possibilities, Donald believes “conscious realism” leaves the door open to life after death. In my conversation with Donald we explore the surprising implications of his theory, and what it suggests about our own place in reality. If this doesn't give cause for you to listen, we speak also about the Darwinian notion of Survival of The Fittest (in more scientific language) and how in order to survive, we need to hide the truth from our perception so that we do not become extinct; i.e. if two organisms are fighting, with the intention to survive, if one organism starts to consider if the actions it is doing are morally sound, and the other organism is looking simply to survive, the one that questions morality will lose and become extinct. So the big question exists, If we are going to survive, will we want to be that entity that survives? This is a fascinating discussion that looks at The Case Against Reality that one must create in order to survive and the fact that what we see anyway is not what is, but simply a perception what is. Think of your computer screen, the icons there are not real, they are icons that we agree upon to take us to another place. This is how we see the world we see. Hearing Dr. Hoffman speak about reality, we start to question everything Donald Hoffman received his PhD from MIT, and is a professor of cognitive science at the University of California, Irvine.
