A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 180Today's episode is a special one. I'm joined by Stephen, a long-time listener and passionate supporter of A Gluten Free Podcast. Stephen first reached out after connecting with me on Instagram and feeling our coeliac disease diagnosis stories were similar. Since then, we've stayed in touch, sharing messages, stories, and updates about life with coeliac disease. It's been so encouraging to connect over this shared journey—and now, we're finally having a face-to-face chat on the pod! Stephen opens up about his personal diagnosis story and how his daughter's coeliac diagnosis soon followed. We talk about the emotional and practical impact that had on their family, and how they've navigated it together. Stephen also speaks candidly about some frustrating challenges at work—especially dealing with colleagues who struggle to understand the seriousness of coeliac disease and the need for a strict gluten free diet.Despite being relatively new to his diagnosis, Stephen hasn't let it slow him down. He's already travelled overseas multiple times and shares what he learned through those experiences—the wins, the tough moments, and how to better prepare for gluten free travel. We also talk about what it's like living with coeliac disease as a guy, especially in social settings, and how those dynamics can sometimes feel isolating or misunderstood. One of the things I admire most about Stephen is his love for the outdoors. He regularly shares his hiking adventures on Instagram, and in this chat, he explains how staying active and being in nature has helped him both physically and mentally as he adapts to life with coeliac disease.

SCRIPTURE: Daniel 3:4–7 (ESV) And the herald proclaimed aloud, “You are commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you are to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace.” Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, all the peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.Compromise: Good: to settle a dispute by mutual concessionBad: to accept standards that are lower than desirableVery Bad: to embrace standards below God's expressed willCOMPROMISE IS MORE THAN A SIN. SIN IS AN ACTION, WHILE COMPROMISE IS A COURSE OF ACTION.Daniel 3,4 - Babylon lead by Nebuchadnezzar Spiritually dark time. Like America, the King's world was influenced by corrupt politicians, business leaders, social elites, judges, dark priests, and people from academia with a few godly people in the mix.In Babylon were people of Israel, human trafficked into Babylon by the government. Some of their finest were elevated to political prominence Daniel 2:49 (ESV) Daniel made a request of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon. But Daniel remained at the king's court.God will promote you and use you to influence your world in spite of the evil around you!Their presence made influential people jealous, but more likely, agitated the demons that influenced the people of influence.Neb set up an image ninety feet tallDaniel 3:4 Gathered the nation so when the music kicked on, everyone was to bow down and worship the image.People participated on various levels:As a group, everyone participated wholeheartedly.Internally, people participated for various reasonsAll in on idolatryAfraid of losing jobDesire for promotionMeet the expectations of their sub-groupCrowd pressureVirtue signaling - good people do thisAfraid of the furnaceThere were hold-outs, and hold-outs were dealt with.Daniel 3:8 (ESV) Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and maliciously accused the Jews.Daniel 3:12 (ESV) There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, pay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”Brought before NebDaniel 3:13 (ESV) Then Nebuchadnezzar in furious rage commanded that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king.Daniel 3:15 (ESV) Now if you are ready when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good. But if you do not worship, you shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”The Furnace: A Place Of DecisionA demand for compromise leading to safety from destructionAnd invitation for obedience the leads to promotionCommon Furnaces Of Compromise:Individuals, groups, organizations and communities.Instead of influencing them, they influence you Require ongoing compromiseThey strip you bare. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Isaiah 43:1–3 (ESV) But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. Challenges That Change Us –Trigger warning: suicidal ideation and depressionThe path to suicidal ideation varies for so many people, but for some it can start from a place of not feeling like they belong.Masking and hiding their true self in a failed attempt to fit in and please everyone can set most up for failure and it can let to even further challenges. This was the case for Lachlan Cameron who many would have described as a carefree guy, always smiling and loving to make people laugh. When Head Basketball Coach John Mosley of East Los Angeles College was invited on the hit Netflix show "Last Chance U", he was hesitant. Although it would be a cool opportunity, it would be an all-access docuseries, filming every move he and his players made. Although he didn't want to, he knew it would be a way of showing people Christ through his life and coaching. This show is dramatic, it's inspiring, and it reveals the grittiness that the JUCO basketball life is. It shows the good and difficult moments for a coach and his players that come from different upbringings, most of them living a very hard life or making mistakes before coming to East LA. But Coach Mosley uses this time with them to not only coach them in basketball, but pour into their lives. In our conversation today, Coach Mosley gives us a behind the scenes look into his coaching career, his philosophies, more about Last Chance U, and most importantly, his faith in Jesus Christ. He attributes where he's at and all the success he's had to Christ, and that is apparent throughout our talk. Listen as we discuss:How Coach Mosley has been able to reach athletes through basketball for the sake of ChristA mission trip to Brazil that changed the trajectory of his lifeHis personal experience as a Netflix starShowing emotions as a Christian in sportHow he hopes "Last Chance U" helps his players and moreGlorifying God even when the spotlight is on ushttps://www.competingforchristpodcast.com/Need encouragement or want to come on the show? Our biggest job as Christians in sport is to share the good news of the Gospel. Everything else is secondary compared to that. 2 Corinthians 5: 20 says, "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God." With this in mind, it's our duty to live out the Gospel, even (especially) as we participate in athletics. Pastor Ken Johnson joins the show today to talk about ways we as Christians can practically share and spread the Gospel to teammates, opponents, and anyone that watches us play. Pastor Ken is a former Indianapolis Colts Chaplain, Police Officer, Reality TV Show Host, and Recording Artist. With so much life experience and trials throughout his life, he consistently shows the Gospel through his words and actions. A lot of basketball legends are either great players or coaches. But Byron Scott is one of the few who can legitimately claim to be both (though he's too humble to say so). As a member of the Los Angeles Lakers' Showtime dynasty, Byron won three NBA championships. He also lost a few bitterly contested Finals showdowns with the Lakers' arch-nemesis: the Boston Celtics. Once he moved from the hardwood to the bench, Byron quickly asserted his strong values and coaching principles, leading the New Jersey Nets to the NBA Finals and earning Coach of the Year honors. He went on to coach Kobe Bryant in the twilight of his career, and make a mark as a mentor to the young guns who are now in starring roles for teams across the League. In this episode, Byron reveals: What made the leadership group of Magic Johnson, Pat Riley, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy work so wellWhat Riley taught him about standing firm in the face of adversityWhy he came to faith following his father's close brush with death and how this guides his lifeHis favorite MJ storyWant to hear more from Byron? Where have you blinded your curiosity? What are you looking at that’s causing you to not see everything else?Often times change can be pretty terrifying. As a result we can get reactive and in turn shut down our own curiosity. In fact what if some seemingly tragic change took place and as a result instead of shutting down you opened up to a higher level of curiosity?Do you know the difference between accessing a situation rather than judging it?The answer is simple (but not always easy)! Our guest on this episode is Andre Van Hall A native of Argentina, André has worked at some of the most prestigious hotels in the world, to include the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg (once recognized as a tope ten hotel in the world), the Ritz in Paris and the St. Regis in New York. Additionally he has managed some of the largest hotels, including the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta and the Adam’s Mark in Denver. Before retiring, he was the CEO of the historic Denver Athletic Club. A graduate of the school of Hotel Administration at Cornell University, André Van Hall has held such positions as Director of Quality, Executive Assistant Manager, Rooms Executive, General Manager, Professor of HR and CEO. His volunteer activity have afforded him the opportunity to serve on boards of Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Convention & Visitors Bureaus, Rotary clubs, Urban League and many others. After suddenly losing his eyesight in late 2011, he started a new career as a Professional Speaker, with an emphasis on Motivation, Change Management and Staff Development. The Taboo that hides beneath your business suit! Leaders and top executives hold positions that convey power, prestige, and competence. However, even if you're flying business class on a long haul flight, you are eating aeroplane food at odd times of the day because you're likely flying in and out of different time zones. On top of that, it doesn’t take long for the "glamour" business dinners, missed workouts and exhaustion to catch up. Before you know it, the next business suit needs to have a little more room than the last one, and the fact is, that last one was three sizes bigger than the one you bought 5 years ago. Those same leaders who hold positions that convey power, prestige, and competence often feel powerless with regard to their own weight gain. Did you know that 27 percent of health spending between 1987 and 2001 was attributable to obesity? The total cost of obesity to private employers is approximately $45 billion per year.So how can we as leaders, slow down, even reverse this weight gain train from going of the track?Well stay tuned because our guest today is Adam Schaeuble, PhD.
