How are we feeling, Detroit? A special podcast episode as Norris Howard and Shianne Nocerini join Jer at the studio in TechTown. We don't just discuss a bit about what's on the ground, but how are we feeling ahead of the election on Tuesday. We explore what this means for Detroit and the broader political landscape, touching on the impact of issues like Roe v. Wade and the dynamics within different communities. Then, a cultural detour to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, where Shianne shares her experience of watching a live performance of "Nightmare Before Christmas" with the orchestra. Discover what other movie scores the DSO has in store for the season, including Harry Potter, Batman, and The Lions King. Finally, an age-old question: Are we Michiganders or Michiganians? We share our thoughts and invite listeners to weigh in on this quintessential Michigan identity topic - spurred on that we noticed a local publication heavily use Michiganian. We'd love to hear your thoughts on today's topics. Drop us a line at dailydetroitmail.com, and don't forget to rate us five stars on your favorite podcast app. Special thanks to our Patreon members for their support. Remember that you are somebody and we'll see you around Detroit.

Shirley Stancato is known for her leadership in Detroit and enduring commitment to social justice. She talks with Denise about the New Detroit coalition, race relations, and dealing with adversity. “Having conversations about race helps leaders in their organizations”. Top down, leaders and educators must set standards for interaction and rules of engagement. For an honest and productive discussion we need a no fault environment and a focus on the issue rather than an individual. She also poignantly reminds us that even if you are alone in your opinion, it doesn't mean that you are wrong. Shirley shares personal stories of growing up and having responsibilities of an adult while still a child herself. He leads some of Detroit's most storied traditions, including the near century-old America's Thanksgiving Parade presented by Gardner White and the world-class Ford Fireworks, which have both delighted generations of families and resulted in significant economic impact for the region. He has led major growth of The Parade Company with bringing on Gardner White as presenting sponsor of the parade through 2031, one of the oldest in the nation, and attracting top partners and sponsors of Michigan and global companies. He has expanded the broadcast to 185 television markets in the U.S., and under his leadership, the parade is recognized as the Best Holiday Parade in America by USA TODAY. In addition, The Parade Company produces several other Detroit jewels including the Strategic Staffing Solutions Turkey Trot and Hob Nobble Gobble presented by Ford Motor Company, among other year-round events. Tony is a distinguished Michigan business leader and has received a multitude of honors for championing initiatives. Most recently, Tony was named 2022 Michiganian of the Year by the Detroit News, received the 2022 Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award and the Spirit of Detroit Award from Detroit City Council. He is on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Economic Club and Henry Ford Hospital West Bloomfield, and an advisor to non-profit organizations and business and community leaders, including the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester and the Marketing Committee of the Detroit Zoo. Previously, Tony was the CEO of Elias Brothers Restaurants from 1998 to 2000, and held that same position from 2001 to 2008 at the newly formed company, which he worked on developing called Big Boy Restaurants LLC. Tony took over Elias Brothers as the company was headed into financial trouble and successfully structured a deal that allowed for the company's assets to be purchased under new ownership. This plan resulted in the company experiencing significant growth, including preserving existing jobs and the disciplined creation of new positions that supported the local and national growth of the brand. During this time, a complete rebranding of the company also occurred. Nation's Restaurant News took notice and named Big Boy Restaurants, LLC as the exclusive winner of the “”Hot Again Concept”” award in 2007. Prior to 1998, he served as Chief Marketing Officer at the company. Tony is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing. In our early 30's we realized we needed more to heal the unique traumas we experienced as children and early adulthood and deepened into spirituality. Kelsay tells of how she was a reluctant medium since childhood until she started on her path to becoming a Reiki Master. “Opportunities come with opposition and the greater the opportunity the greater you're gonna have the opposition.” Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr.  Denise talks to Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr., lead pastor at Triumph Church in Detroit since 1998. Raised by strong and courageous parents who modeled perseverance, as a child his mother challenged him to find the word “quit” in a dictionary. When he reported that he couldn't find it in any dictionary in their home she revealed that it was because she had removed it from them all!   It's no wonder Pastor Kinloch is most proud of his own wife and son, calling them the jewels in his crown. His family is a source of strength, along with the time he spends following Jesus' mandate to pray. Listening to and reading the testimonies of others also gives him the confidence to encounter whatever comes his way. He loves the story of Job in the Bible, who faced extreme adversity but was refined as “pure gold” by his trials, which God never uses to defeat us but rather to develop us and make us better.   His life is marked by sincere devotion to helping others and allowing people to help him, something he saw time and again in his neighborhood church as a boy. The platform of minister is designed to uplift an entire community not just individuals. Triumph Church's ministries reflect his philosophy of partnering with people to make a difference in a very public way to ensure people can see the impact of their giving. He believes in spiritual and social responsibility.   To get involved visit Triumph Church's website https://www.triumphch.org/give.   Need help? Contact the church at 313-386-8044 or OFFICEOFTHEPASTOR@TRIUMPHCHURCH.ORG.  ***  A minister since the age of fourteen, Pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. serves as the lead pastor at Triumph Church in Detroit since 1998. Under his leadership, Triumph Church blossomed into a multi-site phenomenon, with eight campuses hosting fourteen weekly services for more than 35,000 members. Pastor Kinloch currently serves on the Board of Directors for various civic and community organizations including the Skillman Foundation. He has been recognized as one of “The New Generation of Black Leaders” by the Detroit News and “Contemporary Pioneer” by the Michigan Chronicle. He was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. College of Ministers and Laity at the MLK Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta. In recognition of his work in the community and ministry outreach, Pastor Kinloch was named a 2018 Michiganian of the Year recipient by The Detroit News. He lives in Detroit with his wife Robin and son Kadin Elijiah.  Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents.   FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow   TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

He has also achieved the National Social Security Advisor certificate from the National Social Security Association LLC based in Cincinnati, Ohio. “We offer clients the security of working with one person and one team,” he says. “With all parties under one roof, we can ensure that our clients are getting the best care. Our full range of financial services includes estate planning so that clients no longer have to face the uncertainty, expense, and inconvenience of dealing with an outside estate planning attorney.” Providing a complete spectrum of retirement and estate planning services appeals to both long-standing clients and to new clients, many of whom favor using technology to manage their financial solutions, Robertson says. “With our digital tools like estate plan ™ clients gain control over every phase of their estate plan,” he adds. “The average person changes their estate plan 2.5 times. Gone are the days when they have to pay thousands of dollars for every change. We provide a solution that is faster, more cost-efficient, and makes sure every phase is completed so clients experience peace of mind.” Offering the flexibility of face-to-face as well as screen-to-screen consultations is key in today's evolving social and financial environment, Robertson says. A life-long Michiganian, Robertson played lacrosse on the University of Detroit team and is a football fan. He is an outdoor sportsman and an advocate for the preservation of our National Parks. He loves to travel and has a goal of visiting every continent. “I believe in the Golden Rule and inequality for all people,” he says. “A lot of people are under the impression that estate planning is only for millionaires. With two-decades as a beat cop under his belt, Jon Osborn fly fishes and bird hunts as often as possible. Author of Classic Michigan Flies – 16 Legendary Patterns (Stackpole, 2013), Jon regularly contributes to magazines such as Sporting Classics, Michigan BLUE, Pointing Dog Journal and Upland Almanac, among others. These days, he’s writing new book entitled, Flyfisher’s Guide to Michigan (Wilderness Adventures Press, 2019). A career in police work begs for balance and few pastimes fit the bill better than time spent in wild places. Fly fishing has drawn Jon to the Florida Keys flats, Wisconsin’s Driftless Region and the mountains of Colorado and Montana. That said, he’s a Michiganian to the core and loves nothing better than exploring secluded lakes and streams in his home state. Admittedly a bit eclectic, Jon prefers waxed-cotton and wool over nylon, bamboo over graphite and smokes a charred, corncob pipe. Come October, he wanders the autumn woods with a weatherworn side-by-side, insisting a quality experience is the essence of any adventure. Jon values faith, family and friends even more than hunting or fishing and shares his life with an amazing wife, two exceptional children and a hunt-crazed English setter. A close-knit circle of artists, educators, rod makers, guides and writers rank among his closest pals.

http://thecomedycast.com/ Hello and welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you’ll be hearing from Irish stand-up comedian Alex Byrne. We kick off the interview in unusual fashion and speak about peanut butter and jam, or jelly, sandwiches, I'd just discovered them and wanted to share their amazement with the world. Alex comes from Lucan in Dublin, so we get the lowdown on the village withing a city's borders. We speak about Alex being half stand-up comedian, half magician, and not half-Michiganian, coz I'd thought I seen the word Michigan when I should've been reading magician and proceeded to make a right tit of myself. We chat then about what attracted Alex to magic in the first place and about what he does for a living. He reveals a great tactic for getting rid of drunks that want to talk about his job on nights out. Alex has previously attended Dublin's Gaiety School of Acting so I wanted to know more about its acting courses, what he learned from it and what has been transferable to stand-up comedy. Alex enjoys gigging all over Ireland so we speak about whether he finds there's differences between city and country audiences. We speak about Alex's influences; Fr. Ted & Fawlty Towers both get a special mention. And finally then, we tackle that old myth about comedians being miserable and needing the validation and love of strangers.
