John Cusack Breaks Down Momo: Artaud, Aliens & a Rescue From an Insane Asylum John Cusack is back on Reza Rifts, and this time the conversation has nothing to do with the movies that made him famous. He sits down with Keith Reza to break down Momo, his debut graphic novel from Mad Cave Studios, hitting shelves September 29. What starts as a book talk turns into a full on history lesson. Cusack walks through the real life threads behind the story: Antonin Artaud, the French surrealist who once terrified all of Europe, Jackie Gleason, Richard Nixon, and a White House flight log with one name blacked out. He explains what actually happened, what he invented, and why he let the myths stay in. Cusack also gets into the craft. He wrote Momo in a loose screenplay form, built footnotes into the pages so readers could hear the soundtrack in their heads, and handed the art over to Ignacio Noe with one instruction: draw what you want. He talks about touring the book at San Diego Comic Con, what real fans pick up on, and the next project he and Noe already have in the works, The Chemical Wedding. Then the two of them get loose. He broke through in the 1980s with Sixteen Candles, Better Off Dead, The Sure Thing, Stand by Me, and Say Anything, then reinvented himself in the 1990s with The Grifters, Bullets Over Broadway, Grosse Pointe Blank, Con Air, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and Being John Malkovich. In 2000 he earned a Golden Globe nomination for High Fidelity. Era un puro ejercicio de supervivencia extrema: había que domar bestias mecánicas indomables que intentaban matarte en cada curva. Para entender el monumental desafío al que se enfrentaría Max, primero debemos analizar su prodigioso cerebro. Verstappen es el hijo predilecto de la era digital; creció compitiendo en plataformas como iRacing, interiorizando la adherencia a través de volantes con force feedback. En la F1 actual, su Red Bull es un misil hiper-refinado. Conduce con una precisión asombrosa, modificando parámetros del diferencial o del freno motor con sus pulgares desde un volante extremadamente complejo. Los coches derrapaban a más de 300 km/h en las rectas. 1987-1989 - El inicio del refinamiento: Con la llegada de los motores atmosféricos y las restricciones de la FIA por la altísima siniestralidad, la potencia volvió a ser más predecible (la era de Senna y Prost). Aquí Verstappen se sentiría más cómodo, pero la exigencia física seguía siendo demoledora, provocando hasta ampollas sangrantes en las manos por los constantes cambios de marcha en circuitos como Mónaco. Finalmente, hay que hablar del riesgo real. En la F1 de los ochenta, la red de seguridad sencillamente no existía. In July of 1972, in the river town of Louisiana, Missouri, two little boys were playing in their backyard at the foot of Marzolf Hill when their older sister heard them start screaming. Fifteen-year-old Doris Harrison went to the bathroom window and saw something standing by a tree, six or seven feet tall, covered in black hair, with no face she could make out and something dead tucked under its arm. The town laughed at those kids for about a day and a half.Then a Pentecostal congregation of roughly fifty people heard something come down off that hill, and nobody in Pike County thought it was funny for the rest of the month.This is stop number twenty-five on the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, the halfway point, and it's the story of Momo, the Missouri Monster.We walk through the whole flap as it actually happened, from the picnic encounter on Highway 79 in 1971 to the Harrison sighting on July 11, 1972, to Edgar Harrison hanging bait on a tree behind his own house and sitting out in the dark waiting for whatever took his children's afternoon away from them. We cover the sick dog, the smell that runs through every account like a thread, the church meeting on the night of July 14, and Police Chief Shelby Ward putting two dozen armed men across Marzolf Hill three times and finding nothing at all.We get into the plaster casts, the three-toed track that a zoo director in Oklahoma City looked at and called a hoax, and the out-of-state investigators who camped in a family's backyard and left with a theory about flying objects that did more damage to this case than any skeptic ever managed. And we talk about what happens to a town when the newspapers show up, name your monster for you, and turn one bad July into a festival.The second half of the episode leaves Momo behind and gets into Missouri Sasquatch country, because strip the nickname and the novelty record off the Harrison case and what's left is an ordinary Sasquatch report. Missouri has produced roughly 147 catalogued encounters and has never stopped generating them.We cover a farmer near Bowling Green who came around a creek bend on a four-wheeler and found something squatting in the water thirty feet in front of him, the ongoing reports out of Cuivre River State Park and Bowling Green Lake, the night four young men sat in a Jeep near Smithville Lake and listened to the woods go quieter than any of them had ever heard, and the men out of southeast Missouri who put their names to what they saw in the Mark Twain National Forest country.Then we turn it over to the mail. Jenny was seven years old and bringing laundry off the line when the sheet in front of her moved the wrong way. Ray watched something cross a river road in front of his headlights and drove eleven miles out of his way for a year afterward without telling his wife why. Marla found tracks along a fence line and watched her husband go get a shovel and bury them.Dean sat in a deer stand and listened to the silence travel toward him. Colleen's three children came across the yard at a dead run, and the middle one said the thing at the tree line had no face, which is exactly what a fifteen-year-old girl told a newspaper thirty years before.And Wes put a light on something standing chest deep in the Mississippi at forty feet, and it didn't run.The kids saw it first. This week on Bad Dads Film Review, we review The Life Ahead, the 2020 Netflix drama directed by Edoardo Ponti and starring Sophia Loren as Madame Rosa.It is a film about grief, trauma, community, memory, faith, chosen family, and a young boy called Momo who is running out of safe places until he collides with an elderly woman who understands pain better than most.What we coveredMonday-recording energy after England's glorious World Cup defeat of Mexico at the Azteca.Recent watches including The Armstrong Lie, Marco Pierre White, Cape Fear, Shot Caller, The Boys, and some explosive dynamite nominations.Sophia Loren's return in a film directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.Madame Rosa: Holocaust survivor, former sex worker, carer for the children of other sex workers, and a woman still carrying deep fear of doctors and institutions.Momo's introduction: stealing Rosa's candlesticks in the market, trying to stash them badly, and giving possibly the least heartfelt apology ever.Dr Cohen's attempt to place Momo with Rosa, and the negotiation that moves from “absolutely not” to a deal once the money improves.Rosa's household: Babu, Yosef, Lola, and the mix of Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, immigrant, queer and street-level lives around her.Lola as a transgender sex worker, parent and former boxer, and the dads' discussion of how the film includes a lot of identity and community threads.Momo being given a job by Mr Hamil, who helps connect him to his Muslim and Senegalese heritage.Momo's parallel life as a young hash dealer, including his quick success, his maths brain, and the fishmonger/drug dealer who tells him never to mess him about.The recurring lioness imagery and how it connects to Momo's mother, protection, Senegal, faith and abandonment.Madame Rosa's decline: the rain episode, the staring spells, dementia-like symptoms, and Momo covering for her to preserve her dignity.Rosa's hidden basement room, her Auschwitz tattoo, her Jewish memories, and the place she has built to feel safe.The promise Rosa extracts from Momo: do not let them take me to hospital.Momo's guilt when Rosa is hospitalised while he has been out drinking and dealing.The hospital “jailbreak” and the return to the basement, where Momo tries to keep his promise.The fake mimosa plant Momo makes for Rosa, and why that gesture becomes one of the film's most moving moments.The ending: Rosa's death, the funeral, and Momo walking away with Lola and Mr Hamil as a fragile new family unit.Sophia Loren's screen presence at 86: still fiery, still commanding, and especially powerful in the largely silent final section.Ibrahima Gueye's debut as Momo, which the dads thought was hugely impressive.The criticism that the film is sometimes too broad, too sweet, and a bit treacly — touching on many serious subjects without fully developing all of them.Why the drug storyline, in particular, feels like it could have gone somewhere darker but is resolved quite softly.The film's Puglia setting, warm colours, Italian street life, and very direct community feeling.Key quotes / momentsSidey notes that this is probably his first proper Sophia Loren film.Reegs calls the film “a bit treacly, a bit saccharine,” and argues that it throws too much in without examining enough of it in depth.Cris argues that the breadth is part of the Italian community texture: different faiths, identities, politics, histories and people all trying to get by.Dan responds strongly to the setting, the culture, and the idea of people with difficult lives still trying to do something decent for a child.The fake mimosa plant stands out as the small gesture that shows Momo has changed.VerdictA strong recommend. The dads acknowledge that The Life Ahead is well-intentioned and sometimes too broad or sentimental, but the performances, warmth, setting and emotional generosity carry it.
