[Enjoy Adam's podcast? Buy him a coffee | Thanks for your support][re-release from 2015] Adam and Aaron discuss Dominique Wilkins' return to Atlanta - his first game versus the Hawks as an opposition player. Nique dropped 36 points on his former team, as the L.A. Clippers defeated the Atlanta Hawks by three points. This game was just four weeks after the Hawks' blockbuster trade that sent Dominique to the Clippers, in exchange for two-time NBA All-Star, Danny Manning. We discuss all the key aspects of the game. We talk about the SportSouth broadcast and the commentary team's (Tim Brando and Mike Glenn) mention of an alleged rivalry between former teammates, Kevin Willis (1992 NBA All-Star) and The Human Highlight Film. We talk about each team's roster and our memories and opinions on this memorable match-up. Arguably, a forgotten gem of the 1994 NBA season.Players mentioned in this episode include: Ron Harper, Mark Jackson, Mookie Blaylock, Stacey Augmon, Bo Outlaw, Harold Ellis, Duane Ferrell, Jon Koncak, John Williams & Elmore Spencer.Follow: Instagram | Twitter | YouTube | FacebookListen: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Google Podcasts | OvercastSubscribe: NBA-history newsletterE-mail Adam any time. Jim is joined by Neil Paine, senior writer for FiveThirtyEight, to break down the hall of fame candidacy of former NBA point guard Mookie Blaylock. Jim and Neil first talk about the unique connection between Mookie and Pearl Jam (4:22). Then, they cover how advanced metrics favor Blaylock, the misfortune of being in the Eastern Conference playoffs during the 90s, and Mo Cheeks (10:37). Next, they discuss a higher unusual statistic that Blaylock ranks first all-time, his stellar career at Oklahoma, and the tragic consequences of Mookie's off-the-court issues (33:50). Finally, Neil and Jim each build a Mount Rushmore composed of the best defensive point guards in NBA history (50:53), before reaching a final verdict on whether or not Blaylock belongs in the Basketball Hall of Fame (68:25).

Their songs were all over radio, and they played shows with Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Candlebox, and Flaming Lips.  Their second record “Superfriends” was produced by Dave Jerden (Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction) and is criminally underrated. While the songs “Superstar” and “Feed Yourself” did get some national airplay, the whole record is phenomenal and still sounds great today. MUSIC is not a GENRE

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2021 31:55

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE When a new band finds the right name for itself, it's magic. They don't always get it right the first time. Imagine if “Jeremy” was released by Mookie Blaylock. Or if The Hype did “With or Without You”. Or the Young Aborigines scored a hit with “Sabotage”. Those band names do not support the attitude & spirit of the songs. Thankfully inspiration gave us the far more dead-on Pearl Jam, U2 and the Beastie Boys. And those are three of dozens of famous bands that took some trial and error to nail the name. Violent Femmes, however, killed it right off. Sure, it was intended as an off the cuff joke name. But as soon as the two founding members, Brian Ritchie and Victor DeLorenzo, discovered Gordon Gano, it made perfect sense. Brian and Victor had the post-punk rhythm and attitude with an extra shot of weirdness. Gordon had the singing chops - nasal weird kid-like talk-singing that fit so well, and songs that spoke openly about sensitive, painful, awkward feelings without the defensiveness that often pushes singer/songwriters to macho it up. It was raw and new and instantly worked. Their music embodied both the violent “masculine” emotional confusion all adolescents feel, and the vulnerability of undressed honesty often associated with a person's “feminine” side. And by doing so without apology it showed all that masculine-feminine stuff is bullcrap. There's no reason to label what a person feels, how they act, or how they express themselves. Open up and say whatever comes out. Get angry and aggressive. Get confessional and insecure. It's all just being a complete and truly vulnerable human. Did they intend for their name to represent all this? Or their music for that matter? No. The synergy was accidental. The unadorned arrangements (acoustic bass AND drums with no kick!), vocals and words just happened to come together to embody the exact gender duality the name hints at. And they did it with an in-your-face, we don't care what you think folk punk attitude that influenced a whole generation of bands. They were pre-emo - one of the seminal 1980s bands that gave permission for tons of other bands to get confessional without defense. And I'm included in that group. Whenever I'd write lyrics that felt too raw and revealing, I looked to the Femmes (and the Cure and few others) to reassure me that I didn't need to hide the words behind aggressive music. Below are an early-ish song and a much more recent one that both show this. NICK – “You Can't Touch Me” (from the album Listen You People) REC – “Lost Found” (from the album Sympathy for the Weird) Do you remember the Femmes? Did you know they just put out a new album last year? Are there other bands you like who hold this same kind of duality? Discuss dammit! Happy 30th anniversary week! On October, 22 1990, Pearl Jam played their first show as Mookie Blaylock at Seattle’s Off Ramp venue. To celebrate the monumental occasion, we’re going back two decades to the band’s ten year anniversary that took place in Vegas on the Binaural tour. Joining us for this episode for some crossover love is Branden Palomo from the Better Band Podcast. While the band came out to celebrate the moment, Ed did his best to try to downplay the situation (even after he thanked Stone and Jeff for “recognizing his great talent”) by telling stories of that first night at the Off Ramp and not even being able dream that they could be in the position they were in. The fans brought balloons to shower them with during the encore, but there is one moment that gets discussed from this show that holds precedent above all... This was the first moment that Pearl Jam ever played a song written by Mother Love Bone and they chose Crown of Thorns. While the death of Andy Wood had always been a part of their history, it was something that was never quite addressed publicly. It’s an important moment in their history for so many reasons in which we’ll discuss in full detail in the episode, but this was a major part of their healing process after the Roskilde tragedy. When Ed gave Jeff and Stone a hug, it was the bonding between two entities that were so intertwined, yet had never met until that moment. Mother Love Bone and the life of Andy Wood forever became part of Pearl Jam’s story. Special news for this week! For ONE DAY only, to celebrate the 30-year anniversary we will release our episode on the Off Ramp for FREE on our Patreon platform! Only available for 24 hours and then after that will be available to subscribers only. Head on over to check it out http://Patreon.com/liveon4legs

We're taking the time machine all the way back to the band's most pivotal and successful year in 1992 to focus on a show played in Zurich, Switzerland. Guest host Chris Buckley joins the show to talk about it's importance in the band's legacy as they perform something incredibly rare that hasn't been done in the modern era of the band. This show took place 10 days after the iconic Pinkpop Festival show and as the band continued to grow more popular, the fans wanted to get to know more. This is the first time in public that Eddie makes mention of the Mamasan Trilogy - the demo that was given to him by Jack Irons that acted as his audition for what would eventually become the ever famous Mookie Blaylock. I kid. So everyone who follows the band pretty much understands the story, Alive, Once and Footsteps all go together as a mini rock opera of sorts, but it was during this stretch of shows where they played the three songs consecutively for the first time. They haven't performed the Trilogy since 1993. Outside of talking about the rare stuff, we get to tap into a fiery and angst-filled late-20's aged Eddie Vedder who gave us top-notch performances of some of the band's anthems from that time. Versions of Leash, Porch and Rockin In The Free World go down as some of the best of the time period and we'll get to make some comparisons to what we hear from the band out of these songs today. Quick note: I make mention to stay tuned until the end for a special announcement, I hate to ruin a good thing but that announcement has been held off for the time being. Adam and Aaron discuss Dominique Wilkins' first-game back in Atlanta, as an opposition player - March 25th, 1994. Nique dropped 36 points on his former team, as the L.A. Clippers defeated the Atlanta Hawks by three points. This game took place just four weeks after the Hawks' blockbuster trade, that sent Dominique to the Clippers, in exchange for two-time NBA All-Star, Danny Manning. We discuss all the key aspects of the game. We talk about the SportSouth broadcast and its commentary team of Tim Brando and Mike Glenn. Bob Weiss is overlooked in this story-line. He was now coaching the Clippers, however, had just spent the previous three seasons, with the Hawks. We chat about the commentary team's mention of an alleged rivalry between former teammates, Kevin Willis (1992 NBA All-Star) and The Human Highlight Film. We talk about each team's roster and our memories and opinions on this memorable match-up - arguably a forgotten gem of the 1994 NBA season. As per usual, the conversation is scattered with humor and plenty of insight. A must-listen, for die-hard NBA fans, regardless of the team you support. The most prominent players mentioned in this episode, include: Ron Harper, Mark Jackson, Mookie Blaylock, Stacey Augmon, Bo Outlaw, Harold Ellis, Duane Ferrell, Jon Koncak, John Williams & Elmore Spencer. Statistics mentioned in many episodes, are courtesy of Basketball-Reference. Thanks to Paul Vido of the Downtown team, for the Danny Manning photo (see show notes).
