This one's a special show for me! For this show, Yellow Brit Road (I) was on the ground in Toronto, where I caught up with a personal hero of mine: Gruff Rhys, Welsh musician, former frontman of the band Super Furry Animals, one half of Mercury-nominated duo Neon Neon, storyteller extraordinaire and solo musician. Gruff was performing at the Drake Underground in Toronto on 17 October 2023, supporting indie-folk band This Is The Kit on tour across North America. We talked about the Welsh music scene, the 90s, Super Furry Animals, Welsh pop culture, Super Furries' "lost techno album", and Gruff's upcoming solo album, Sadness Sets Me Free, out 26 January 2024! (tomorrow) Find all the music played/mentioned on the show here. PS: CFRC Live Sessions are now on air! And the CFRC funding drive is in full swing! Kate Stables is a singer, song-writer, multi instrumentalist and founding member of This Is The Kit. British born Paris based Stables will be releasing her 7th full length record, Careful Of Your Keepers on June 9th via Rough Trade Records. The new effort is a complex, soothing and magnetic collection of songs produced and "toneset" by Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon). In this episode Joe and Kate discuss the lyrical origin and tone of the new record and Kate shares some insight into her general writing process and how that connects to the listener. Kate tells us why she's likely a "changer" vs. and "stay the samer" and how that may manifest in both her life and art. She also shares the experience of making Careful Of Your Keepers with a super furry animal, explains the meaning behind This Is The Kit and champions Joes excitement for the video for the single More Change. https://youtu.be/v25evwdaf8o This episode supported by Native Instruments, iZotope, and Plugin Alliance. I spoke with Gruff Rhys, the always inventive artist, frontman of Super Fury Animals, sometomes half of Neon Neon, author, director and all round potential Welsh national treasure.Super Fury Animals, often considered the last great band on Creation Records gave a sense of surreal adventure and a global musical pallet unusual for the Britpop era. They sung sometimes in Welsh, were politically conscious, at one point they had a tank, they mixed in techno, tropicalia and a million other sonic sources and of course there’s that song The Man Don’t Give A Fuck that sampled Steely Dan.Then at some point, Gruff set out with a solo and collaborative body of work that’s seen his music grow into films, collaborations, such as Neon Neon (with Boom Bip) a book and a rather novel use of power point presentations. We had a chat about language, about the Velvet Underground, about his film American Interior and about scoring a hit with a song that says “fuck” over 50 times. Enjoy!Title music by ESO
In this episode Joe bring the table Neon Neon's Stainless Style. A project from Super Furry Animals front man Gruff Rhys and electronic artist Boom Bip. Which turns out to be a concept album about John DeLorean, the eccentric creator of the DeLorean vehicle made infamous from it's history and famous because of Back to the Future. How do we rate this album? Listen to find out!
In this, Episode 45 (which is part of Series 5) of the SyncLodge Exploring Music Podcast we explore the history of the legendary Lex Records, esoteric music and great, unusual collaborations, mashups and breaking new ground in music with Tom Brown and Will Skeaping. Lex is best known for releasing music by Danger Mouse, MF DOOM, Neon Neon and BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah. In 2011 Lex started production on a series of short films written by Alan Moore and directed by Mitch Jenkins, the films were screened at film festivals worldwide and are now licensed to AMC's Shudder. Musician Cate grew up in rural Carmarthenshire, Wales and she sings in both Welsh and English. After an early tour with Gruff Rhys Of Super Furry Animals and a collaborative role in his Neon Neon project, she went on to release a series of inimitable records as a solo artist. Staking out a sound that's as much influenced by folk and prog as it is by psych and krautrock, she neatly sidesteps the hackneyed sound of most modern indie while still making timeless pop. She recently spent some time in the Lake District, where she divided her time between songwriting and learning how to make solid wood furniture. The music eventually became her new album Reward which is released later this month by Mexican Summer records.
For this episode of Lisson… ON AIR, I am playing the 2017 record called Dream Maker by Hans Berg. Hans Berg is a Swedish musician, producer and composer who since 2004 has also collaborated with Nathalie Djuberg. Lisson presents… ON AIR is written and made by Hana Noorali. Track list: 1. In Dreams: This was made for Nathalie and Hans’ first outdoor sculpture project in Wanås Konst Sculpture Park in Sweden in 2016. Titled “In Dreams” the work consisted of a soundscape and a reflective surface with hypnagogic sculpture atop, installed on the ground of a park which was surrounded by woodland trees. Birds wearing excessive make-up and smoking cigarettes from their bottoms, pink and blue acorns who are wearing crinkled under-ware, bananas wrapped in bows and florescent caterpillars all of which are simulacrums, characters that are bizarre and subversive substitutes for what you might come across in a park are included in the installation. These anthropomorphised animals, fruits and vegetation combine together with sound to create an immersive installation that surreally mimics its environment. An insurgent context manifests within which the viewer questions their understanding of reality. 2.The Secret Garden: This track was made to accompany a large-scale installation which was first shown at ACCA in Melbourne in 2015. The work consists of neon lights and sculptures which are controlled and activated by the music and by the viewers’ movement within the installation. The space is filled with giant flower heads, enormous leaves, golden acorns, chequered florescent cushions, melting ice creams and neon curls all of which are presided over by a clay-mation shaman rabbit. These psychedelic animals, objects and sounds are part of a fictional landscape titled “The Secret Garden” created by Nathalie Djuberg and Hans Berg. The viewer is propelled into a mysterious and ultra-sensory world, an existential and hallucinatory void that is intended to mirror or draw out the infinite possibilities of the audience’s subconscious. The work was also shown at 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai (M21), 2016 and at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) in February 2016. 3. Neon: “Neon” was made for an installation that was never realised. Both Hans Berg and Nathalie Djuberg had wanted to make a work within which lights were controlled by music, “The Secret Garden” was made but “Neon” for now only exists as an audio track. 4. Gas, Solid, Liquid: This song was made for a special edition of Parkett Magazine in 2012, that featured an article on Natalie Djurberg and Hans Berg.
After forgetting to press record on our first attempt, we rushed this episode together. You can probably tell. We chat about Childish Gambino, Noel Gallagher, Matt Berry and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard and find out if Dan and Matt liked Neon Neon. We are on twitter, you know @whatwegotpod

Gruff Rhys is known around the world for his work as a solo artist as well as singer and songwriter with Super Furry Animals and Neon Neon, and for his collaborations with Gorillaz, Mogwai, Dangermouse and Sparklehorse amongst others. For his latest multimedia project he has retraced the fantastical adventure of his 18th Century relative, the explorer John Evans. In search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, John Evans left Wales for America in 1792 with only a $1.75 in his pocket. Fiction, fact, fantasy, myth and music documentary collide in American Interior as Rhys uncovers Evans’ legacy to America, the true circumstances of his death, and his final resting place. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. There are only two rules - no scripts and only 15 minutes each.
