Taking into account the sustained productivity growth over the long term, as well as the improved economic outlook and expected moderation in inflation in 2024, the Council says that employers should reward employees with fair and sustainable wage increases. A new environmental movement is gathering pace: “Nature Positive”. The concept of "Nature Positive" envisages a planet where the current rapid loss of biodiversity is halted and reversed, and nature is restored. Since the term was coined in 2020 amid negotiations for the Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity, world leaders, businesses and civil society have rallied behind the ambition. With calls for action growing stronger, there's an increasing recognition that reversing biodiversity is critical for combating the global climate crisis, preventing future pandemics of zoonotic origin, addressing water and food insecurity, as well as supporting sustainable and equitable development. In December 2022, the goal of halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030 was codified in the mission of the landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Its adoption under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity has been described as the ‘Paris moment' for nature.  However, experts warn that vigilance is needed to prevent the concept of a Nature Positive world being threatened by greenwashing, with some pledges lacking the rigorous scientific framework needed to achieve real impacts. On this episode of Climate Connections, Professor Lawrence Loh, Director of the Centre for Governance and Sustainability at NUS Business School shares his insights on nature positivity and what companies should consider in order to avoid falling into the greenwashing trap Feature produced and edited by: Yeo Kai Ting (ykaiting@sph.com.sg)Voiced by: Emaad AkhtarPhoto credits: Nature Positive InitiativeMusic credits: pixabay & its talented community of contributors See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Most retirement systems across the globe have three pillars: a government run social security system, an employment-based retirement system, and, finally, additional individual retirement savings. On the fourth stop of our global tour, we travel to a country where the government runs the whole thing…Singapore! Their comprehensive system goes beyond retirement and is run by the government through the Central Provident Fund (CPF). In this episode, Josh Cohen interviews Desmond Chew, a senior manager at CPF, to help explain its history and how it works, and Joe Cherian, a professor who lays out a methodology which helps evaluate both Singapore's system and others around the globe. Join us to hear about this all-in-one approach!  Key Takeaways: [:25] Josh Cohen, your host, introduces today's topic: Singapore, whose government runs the whole retirement plan, and in fact, reaches well beyond retirement. [2:25] Singapore established a mandatory retirement system called the Central Provident Fund (CPF) the basis of the system played today. [2:50] Mr. Desmond Chew (Group Director- Housing) has served in the CPF for more than 20 years. Desmond explains what exactly CPF is and what is its role. [7:51] CPF supports other goals apart from retirement, Dr. Chew speaks about the importance of public housing. [10:52] MediSave are contributions that increase as workers age and its purpose is to be destined for medical expenses. Desmond shares the most important aspect. [13:08] Josh and Desmond dive deep into how the money is invested and the role the GIC plays. [15:25] Desmond talks about the case of those individuals who are ready to take more risks with their savings. [16:45] The system balances individual choice with collective responsibility, Dr. Chew explains how. [20:02] Joseph (Joe) Cherian (Professor of Finance at NUS Business School) shares his background and career journey. [22:10] Joe talks about what happened in 2014, a conflictive time for Singapore's retirement system. [22:54] Joe wrote an article named: Seven Pillars of a Good Retirement System, stating why CPF meets most of these pillars and the possible areas for improvement. [30:06] Can the US or other countries adopt a system like this? Joe thinks it's difficult to emulate the historical and governmental influence, so he does not recommend it unless the country has a good and solid government. His work spans organisations across Asia, Canada and the UAE. Some of many include Ubisoft, DHL, Johnson&Johnson, LeeJeans,Vans, VFCorp, National University of Singapore, NUS Business School and Singapore's Ministry of Education. As South East Asia's 1st Gallup Certified Strengths Finder® & Platinum Coach, Jason was invited as a keynote speaker for an ASEAN Future Leaders Summit. He also sits on the Singapore's NUS Business School panel as a Strengths Finder® Advisor. Here are the highlights of this episode: Most of the time Jason works with Directors, GM's, and C-levels to whom he does his 1-on-1 coaching. He says that the challenges these people face is when they wonder on how they can deploy their team in the best possible way. When they try to designate a certain task to someone, they don't get the performance that they want from that person. Jason tries to ask them "if somebody is really actually good at doing something, do you think that person likes it or hates it?" and most of the time they'll say they like it of course. But that's WRONG, that's not true. Sometimes there are people who are good at doing something but they don't like it. We need to understand what are the things they are good at they really enjoy. By doing so, they will give you their greatest performance. Jason believes that everyone is built for greatness. The issue is, the greatness is different for each person. How we get that greatness from each person, that world-class standard, is really to identify what they're built to do, since each person is different.  Jason's Valuable Free Action (VFA): There's this one question that you could ask: try asking them "For this task, how energize or drain do you feel in doing that task? From 10 being 'energized' and zero being 'drained'. Jason emphasizes that everybody's energy level is different, and as a leader, you need to figure out what they are their best in doing a job.
