The Mishnah in Masechet Ta'anit (26b) describes how Tu B'Av – the 15 th of the month of Av – was an especially joyous occasion, a day when shidduchim (matches) were made. The girls would wear fine clothing and go into the vineyards. The young men would then come and choose a bride. The Gemara (31a) adds that the girls would try to draw the young men's attention to their qualities. The girls with an attractive appearance would say, "Set your eyes upon beauty." The girls from distinguished families would say, "Set your eyes upon the family." Those with neither of these would say, "Make your decision for the sake of Heaven." What did these girls mean by telling the young men to marry them "for the sake for Heaven"? The answer is that the Gemara here is teaching us a critically important lesson about maintaining hope and faith. Some people feel confident about themselves because of their natural gifts and talents – such as appearance – and others feel confident because of their family background, because of their connections. But some people feel that they have nothing going for them, they have nothing special about them. Singles might despair because they feel they don't have what it takes to get married. People might feel anxious about their financial future because they feel they don't have what it takes to make a good living. The Gemara teaches us that nobody should ever despair because Hashem is with him, because he is committed to living לשם שמיים , for Hashem's sake. When a person begins feeling incapable or inadequate, he needs to remember that Hashem believes in him – and so he must believe in himself. The girls in the vineyards were not only talking to the boys – they were talking to themselves, saying, "I know Hashem believes in me, I know He wants me to get married, and I know that He will get me married. I believe in Him – and I believe in myself." The story is told of a couple that was married for a number of years without children, and so they contacted an organization that helps couples struggling with infertility. The fellow from the organization said he wanted to meet them in the city for lunch to discuss their situation and how the organization might be able to help. On the phone, they went through various options of places where they could get together for lunch. Growing impatient, the husband said, "Look, I need a child, not a tuna sandwich." "I know," the fellow from the organization replied, "but the point here is that Hashem can send you a child as quickly as he can send you a tuna sandwich." So often a person desperately needs something and he doesn't believe in his ability to attain it. He needs to remember that whatever it is that he needs can come as easily the food he orders at a restaurant. We should never doubt ourselves. Even when we feel we don't have what it takes, Hashem always ensures that we do.

The climate crisis no longer looms in the future, but has arrived in the form of deadly heat waves, enormous floods and wildfires, hurricanes, and droughts. It's clear that, along with fighting to slow climate change, we also need to protect ourselves and the most vulnerable around us from the devastating effects of global warming — especially as the Trump administration slashes existing safeguards. Science writer and broadcaster David Pogue discusses what we can do in an increasingly precarious world. The post Fund Drive Special: Preparing Oneself for Climate Emergencies appeared first on KPFA.

Ajahn Dhammasiha is asked about supportive conditions to make our Metta Meditation (Loving Kindness) stronger and more successful: Loving Kindness to Oneself! Make sure you really include yourself when you extend Mettā to all beingsCompassion (Karuna). Use other Divine Abidings (Brahmavihāra) as appropriate, in particular Compassion/Karunā. If we struggle to extend metta to anyone, we may be more successful with Karuna. The most difficult people often have a lot of pain themselves. Once we see that, it's easier to have compassion to them.Contemplating Karma (Kamma). What I experience is the result of my own karma, my own actions, including actions in past lives. On a deeper level, the person hurting me is simply returning my own bad karma to me. Also, they will have to bear the painful result of their own karma in future, no need for me the avenger or punisher, they will get their karma anyhow. Contemplating Impermanence (Anicca-Saññā). What we're so upset with today, we may not even be able to remember in a years time. Why getting worked up about anything so evanescent Contemplating Death. If I were to die today, would I really bother about all these irritations I experience? Compared to the reality of our & our 'enymies'' mortality, what we're angry about appears so irrelevant.Sense Retraint (Indriya-samvara/Indriyesu Guttadvāra). Simply avoid persons and situations that make you angry, and don't even think about or remember them.Don't look at the tweets of a politician you can't stand. Don't watch that video, or those news, if they make you angry. Wise Attention (Yoniso Manasikāra). Focus on what's beautiful in others and yourself. Give attention to your own and others' kind and admirable qualities and actions. Contentment. Count your blessings. Appreciate what you have already, rather than hankering after things other have, and which may be difficult to obtain. Gratitude (Kataññū-Katavedi). Remember all the good you have received from others. Focus on that, rather than on the hard times other have given you.Good Friends (Kalyāṇamittatā). JOIN SHERI HORN HASAN @ FOR THIS WEEK'S ASTROLOGICALLY SPEAKING PODCAST WHICH DROPS JULY 4 @ https://www.karmicevolution.com/astrologically-speaking“Where is love? Does it fall from skies above? Is it underneath the willow tree I've been dreaming of?” No, you fool, it comes from within! This is the dilemma we've been dealing with as since we were advised to plant seeds of self-compassion and nurturing at the Cancer New Moon of June 26.As evolutionary astrologer Steven Forrest discusses on a recent podcast about Cancer energy: “If you are forgiving toward yourself you're more likely to be forgiving of others. Loving other people is easier if you love yourself. If you harbor negative feelings about yourself, how can you love anyone else? Actual love has to start inside yourself.”Apparently the U.S. Congress didn't get the message when they passed the Bigly Ugly Bill that cuts Medicaid & other social services--including SNAP, the supplemental food program for children & families in need, & more—on July 3. This was when so many who expressed concern about their constituents losing healthcare flipped rapidly from caring about others to caring only about themselves as we approached the exact Venus/Uranus conjunction in Taurus on July 4. This week's podcast discusses the Capricorn Full Moon at @18'50” of the Capricorn/Cancer axis at 1:37 p.m. PT & 4:37 p.m. ET on July 10, when both luminaries square Ceres, the goddess of the grain, & Hygeia, the goddess of health, squares the transiting nodal axis. Ceres, known as the goddess of the grain, in tension with both luminaries highlights the chasm between compassion for others and selfishness. That's because, as always at a full Moon, the Moon reflects the light of the Sun back to itself, highlighting the Sun's shadow side. And the square of transiting Hygeia to the transiting nodal axis points to the tension between doing the right thing through compassionate understanding that everyone deserves healthcare & depriving them of it in order to save money. At this full Moon, the mature & responsible Capricorn Moon reminds the Cancer Sun of Forrest's advice to “…be wary of excessive self-indulgence, & of becoming so mired with your own needs & [in your own] issues that you ignore the pain of others,” & to release this negative energy during the waning portion of this monthly lunar cycle. So much for that, eh? This podcast outlines the details of what this latest piece of legislation contains, i.e., exactly how much money the U.S. Congress has agreed to strip from the poor and middle class in order to provide the wealthy—including billionaires—with more money to will to their heirs. We look also at the retrograde of Neptune in Aries on July 4, and the July 7 entrance of Uranus into Gemini for the next seven years, barring a short retrograde period from November through April of next year. We also note the upcoming retrogrades of Saturn & Mercury as well, and how with Mercury in Leo until September 2, we'll be hearing loud arguments about how this legislation will negatively affect those most in need among us. This is especially true, too, since Venus enters social, talkative Gemini on July 4 through August 25.This podcast explores the potential for changes in technology, electricity and our local communities when Uranus enters Gemini July 7, as well as the bigger picture energies of the longer cycles currently in play. Increased need for electrical energies & how that might affect local communities, apps that notify people when ICE is within a five-mile range, and greater issues around the collection of personal data cyber security threats, all likely all ramp up during this seven year period.Join us for all this & more Astro News You Can Use when this podcast drops on July 4 @ https://www.karmicevolution.com/astrologically-speaking See you then! Dear YUZ,I'm delighted to write to you again after six months away. We will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 7:15 PM in the Buddha Hall at 300 Page St. You're more than welcome to come a few minutes early to help set up. We will sit Zazen and discuss this:Self, One Self, Not-SelfIt sure seems like I have a self--an agent of action, one who makes choices, does work, gives gifts, harms others, apologizes... So what do we make of this teaching of No Self of not-self? If Zen says I don't have a self, how could my life possibly work out? Let's take a clear-eyed look at some teachings on not-self to bring this liberating view to life, without the confusion.I hope to see you there.Warm bows,Kodo--https://www.kodoconlin.com/
That Wellness Podcast with Natalie Deering: Internal Family Systems with a Twist
What if our inner parts weren't just fragments of the psyche—but vessels designed to receive divine love? My guests today are Chelsea Odhner, Robert Falconer, and Jonathan S. Rose—co-authors of the new book Opening the Inner World: Spiritual Healing, Internal Family Systems, and Emanuel Swedenborg. Together, we explore the playful spirit that brought this project to life and the profound insights that emerged at the intersection of IFS therapy and Swedenborgian spirituality. We discuss Swedenborg's life and legacy, the idea of spiritual awakening as universally accessible, and how our parts—when burdened—can block access to divine inflow. The authors share how Swedenborg's theology aligns with the IFS model, especially around the belief that healing comes from within, through dialogue, compassion, and connection to something greater. This episode is a heartfelt, curious, and spiritually charged invitation to see your inner world not as a problem to fix—but as a sacred system ready to be witnessed, healed, and loved. __________________________ Topics We Explore: ✨ The joy and creativity behind writing Opening the Inner World

For Jesus Followers, Fasting, with Food, Will Symbolize a Victory Over Oneself and Solidify a Personal Relationship with God MESSAGE SUMMARY: In the early Christian Church, which was under great stress and constant physical danger, God's direction and blessing was needed. Therefore, fasting was considered by Church leaders as a key element of their communion with God when they needed both His direction and blessing, as we find in Acts 14:23: “And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.". As a challenge, "consider the food issue" in your life, especially when you need God's direction in your life, because food has such a stronghold on us. Fasting and tithing can significantly deepen your personal relationship with God because fasting is not easy; but success in fasting, especially with food, can symbolize your victory over yourself and solidify your commitment to your personal relationship with God. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, Sabbath rest is truly an unbelievable gift! Thank you that there is nothing I can do to earn your love; it comes without any strings attached. As I close my eyes for these few minutes before you, all I can say is, thank you! In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 133). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Matthew 4:1-2; Matthew 6:16-18; 2 Samuel 12:15-17; Psalms144:1-15. Our world is more magical than we know - more than we can know. Increasing numbers of us are realising that the 'citadel theory of mind' where we see ourselves as isolated units within the boundaries of our own skulls is not how the world works. But if it isn't, then how do we make sense of the worlds beyond consensus reality? How do we engage with the web of life and all that's around it in ways that are respect, reciprocal and generative? Robert (Bob) Falconer is a long time IFS practitioner and trainer. He is the author or co-author of many books, including Many Minds, One Self which he co-wrote with Dick Schwartz, who is credited with founding Internal Family Systems Therapy. For me, this is the form of therapy that leans closest into spiritual work, particularly into shamanic work, and Bob's book, The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind and Spirit Possession is a ground-breaking work that blows open the fallacies of the citadel mind model and opens us to a wide spectrum of other realities in other cultures, all of which acknowledge the existence of non-human, non-embodied energies that have at least a degree of agency and that can interact with human beings in ways that are either to our benefit or our detriment. Very few are neutral. So as we hurtle towards the edge of a cliff, pushed by our culture's endemic inability to engage with our own traumas, talking to Bob seemed pretty much essential. We talk quite a lot about IFS, which is Internal Family Systems therapy and at the start, we open up more of what that's about, though I do encourage you to read the book Bob co-wrote with Dick Schwartz. We also - and this is a trigger warning - explore some of Bob's own life history of harrowing sexual and physical abuse so if this is likely to trigger parts of you, then please only listen when you're feeling grounded and well resourced. Beyond that, we range far, wide and deep across the boundaries where science meets spirituality and philosophy meets psychotherapy, all of which is squarely in the area that I think needs most work, for all of us.
