I first met Mauricio Alvarez at a Next Generation Leadership retreat around 2013. I was impressed then and I continue to be impressed by how God has led him and used him. From his native Uruguay to the US for ministry and mission to business as a new thing from God in the world of mission, Mauricio has listened to the Lord and take each step as it's been made known. Today, Maricio lives and works in Spain as the founder of a heavy equipment distributor with customers around the world and as a member of the leadership team of Open Network, focused on the Latin world.Mauricio encourages us and challenges us with this story. He and his wife serve the community in which they live through business, education, church planting all while serving the Spanish and Portuguese speaking populations of many countries. Listen to his story and enjoy what God is doing through this humble brother. Mauricio has a message for the emerging BAM movement in other countries and reminds all of us that BAM is a journey and a process, not a destination or achievement. For more information, visit B4TNext.com If you've enjoyed the Business as Mission podcast, please follow us so you won't miss any episodes and give us a rating wherever you listen.

Bitcoin had a strong weekend and weekly close, but all eyes were on Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, who was arrested by authorities in France. The details are still trickling in, but Durov reportedly faces numerous charges related to his operation of Telegram's social messaging platform and content moderation on the app. Many people have taken this as a direct assault on freedom of speech, raising questions about the liability of a platform creator for the content shared on it. In other news, AI tokens have surged ahead of the Nvidia earnings call on Aug. 28, and Shiba Inu is launching its own DAO. Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Tuesday, 20 August 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started. On Monday, the Sensex was down by 0.02 percent, while the Nifty edged up by 0.13 percent. Women's safety is a prominent issue right now, and corporate India is trying to protect half its workforce. Indian companies are enhancing office safety measures to protect female employees. Priyamvada C and Devina Sengupta write about these Initiatives, which include more helplines, safer travel options like hotel stays near airports during assignments, self-defence training, and gender sensitization classes. Amidst rising harassment cases, firms are now more focused on gender diversity and safety, with measures such as SOS applications and secure transportation partnerships. The importance of creating a safe and inclusive work environment is underscored by reports of women contemplating leaving their jobs due to various workplace challenges. The National Payments Corporation of India, or NPCI, has announced that it would hive off Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), a payment app based on UPI, into a separate subsidiary. The move aims to boost BHIM's market position amid competition from other UPI apps like Google Pay and PhonePe. The NPCI hopes that with a dedicated team focusing on its development, BHIM's market share will improve. Additionally, BHIM is looking to increase its user base by foraying into the e-commerce sector via the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), explains Gopika Gopakumar. During his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India's aim to achieve 500 gigawatts of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. This includes renewables and nuclear power. Despite missing a previous target, recent progress indicates India is on track, having added 15 gigawatts in the first half of 2024 alone. Manjul Paul writes that the government's plan to invite bids for 50 gigawatts annually until 2027-28 supports this ambition. With renewables now accounting for 33 percent of India's energy capacity — up from 18% in 2017 — the push towards a greener grid is evident. However, meeting the 2030 goal also requires overcoming challenges like India's reliance on coal and ensuring budget allocations are fully utilized. After leaving his position as CEO of PayU India in 2019, Amrish Rau envisioned starting afresh in India's fintech scene. He approached Sequoia Capital for funding. Instead of funds, he was offered the leadership of Pine Labs by Shailendra Singh, a company well-established in the payments industry with a key focus on point-of-sale terminals and solutions. Samikha Goel writes that Rau was Initially hesitant to build a new venture. But he accepted, recognizing the growth potential and existing 1.6 billion dollar valuation. Under his leadership since March 2020, Pine Labs has soared to a 5 billion dollar valuation, positioning itself as India's fourth-largest fintech firm and contemplating a billion-dollar IPO. This would potentially raise its valuation over 6 billion dollars, marking a significant milestone in India's fintech landscape. As climate change intensifies, it's impacting vehicle reliability. This is pushing the automotive industry to adapt. Manufacturers now prioritize rigorous testing of air conditioning systems and tyres to ensure they withstand extreme weather conditions. For instance, Subros, a leading car AC maker in India, tests products in temperatures up to 55°C, while tyre manufacturers like JK Tyre address challenges in natural rubber production due to weather impacts by initiating projects to secure quality rubber supplies. Alisha Sachdev writes that the rise of electric vehicles  adds another layer of complexity, requiring effective heat management for their numerous electronic components to maintain performance and longevity. This industry-wide push towards resilience and sustainability reflects a proactive response to our changing climate. Show notes:Dressing Pine Labs for IPO: What ‘fintech bully' Amrish Rau can learn from PaytmTransport, timings, SOS: How India Inc is trying to keep women staff safeWhat is NPCI's game plan for BHIM app?  Your car's AC and tyres need a climate-driven upgrade. Crypto Update: Terraform Labs moet schikken voor 4,5 miljard

Cryptocast | BNR

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2024 6:29

It's been over a year since the govt launched Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). From ride-sharing and food delivery, to groceries, the platform can be used to buy and sell anything. The platform is close to hitting the 50 million transactions mark now. And what stands out about it is its fascinating pricing strategy that makes ordering food on it as much as 45% cheaper than a Swiggy or a Zomato. Could ONDC make the two food delivery giants redundant? While there is no easy  answer to the question, what made us more curious was this: Do we want ONDC to win? Open enrollment. Deductible. Coinsurance. HMO. Indemnity plan. If you're listening this far, you probably have a migraine already. Understanding the language of the health insurance industry, let alone selecting a health insurance plan, can be confusing, frustrating, and disheartening. But never fear - we are here to give you a crash course on everything you need to know about your insurance plan. No need to scroll through Healthcare.gov's Health Insurance glossary and risk throwing yourself out the window… We want to give you some tools here to understand what you're choosing when you pick a healthcare plan, but no one but you really knows what's best for your health, so (for better or worse) we aren't going to give any actual advice here about what healthcare plan to pick.  Also, all health insurance kind of sucks, so you will probably get screwed no matter what you pick. Basically, we're going to try to decode all the mystifying language that the insurance companies use to disguise the ways they're going to screw you so at least you'll be able to anticipate how you'll get screwed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32vw4LZpelA Show Notes Names Whether you get health insurance offered by your employer, or you have to buy insurance on your own in an exchange or on healthcare.gov, or you have Medicare and you are looking at one of the privatized Medicare Advantage plans, you're going to be choosing from a series of plans that have totally incomprehensible names and acronyms, so let's start by breaking down the how the name of the plan itself will tell you something about how your insurer is going to screw you. Generally the first part of an insurance plan's name will be the name of the insurer (like “Blue Cross” or “United Health”), then you MIGHT get a word that says who is paying for the insurance plan (if it's a “Group” plan that means an employer is paying for it, an “Advantage” plan is a privatized Medicare plan), and finally there will be an acronym that only 0.005% of people in America understand - and those are the generally people making money from the plans. These acronyms will be something like HMO, HSA, PPO, EPO, or my personal favorite “GTFO” - the “get the fuck out of here that can't be a real plan” plan! Indemnity Plans (“Open Choice” or “Open Network” plans): are the opposite of managed care; you could use any doctor or hospital, there are no networks, no review of care or pre-approvals, no claims denials. These were the plans that virtually everyone had prior to the 1980s, and plans that virtually no one has today except maybe the extremely wealthy. In 1978, 95% of people had indemnity plans, then that dropped to 71% by 1988, and by 1998 it was down to 14%. Today, only 1% of workers have indemnity plans. Indemnity plans are the opposite of managed care - you can see any doctor or hospital you want, there Today, you probably wouldn't even want an indemnity plan, because the modern versions usually only pay a percentage of the cost of your care, leaving you with the rest and massive bills. Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) represent only 12% of insurance plans today, so after taking over in the 1990s, old school HMOs are going the way of the dinosaurs. HMOs usually limit coverage to doctors/providers who work for or contract with the HMO (“in-network”). It generally won't cover out-of-network care except in an emergency. HMOs can also be limited by location, meaning you might have to live or work in a certain area to be eligible.  Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPOs) are a new catch-phrase that are appearing more and more often, but they are VERY similar to an HMO, and you should think of them the same. In fact, that survey that only 12% of workers have HMO plans includes EPOs under the same category. EPOs often have larger networks than HMOs, and unlike HMOs, they don't require referrals to see specialists - as long as the specialist is in their very limited net...

This is Part 2 of the series where we discuss India's Digital Infrastructure. Here are our Research Notes for the episode. Open Network for Digital Commerce or ONDC has been in the news lately. Currently, online marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal) follow a platform model. In this model, they have end-to-end control over the entire e-commerce transaction process, right from seller on-boarding, customer acquisition, order fulfilment, complaint redressal, and managing payments. Right now, all these processes are being controlled by a single entity.ONDC's open network will 'unbundle' or break down this complex system of small activities into separate micro-services that can be addressed separately by any entity. These organisations can chooses to perform one or more of these activities. As a result, the proponents of ONDC say that if it is successful, ONDC will democratize e-commerce, increase competition and accelerate growth. If it is democratised, one big change through ONDC will be that it caps referral commissions for platforms that send shoppers to a seller at just 3% – much less than the roughly 30% cut charged by Amazon, Flipkart and others.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you like the content we create, I need 30 seconds of your time to help us reach more people. Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) is an initiative aiming at promoting open networks for all aspects of exchange of goods and services over digital or electronic networks. ONDC is to be based on open-sourced methodology, using open specifications and open network protocols independent of any specific platform.  T Koshy is the CEO of ONDC where he focuses on building digital solutions to population scale problems. He also has a long background in the finances space, having worked in NSDL and EY for over 30 years. He is a graduate of IIM-B.  Nikhil Kumar is the Co-Founder & Chief Evangelist at Setu. Nikhil was earlier with the iSPIRT Foundation, where he worked on building a vibrant developer ecosystem for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN). Before starting up, Nikhil worked together with Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani on the “India Stack" of Aadhaar and UPI.

According to Arvind Gupta, the head of Digital India Foundation, a public platform is something that is built around the concept of openness, standard and trust. It is backed by the government and not by any private entity. There are about nine platforms with billion plus users each across the world. Five of them are in the US and four in China. And none of them are government backed. With Aadhaar, India built the world's first and largest public digital platform. It is now being used in banking, KYC and several other fields. It led to some sort of digital revolution, like the birth of UPI which ended the duopoly of two international operators in India. It allows you to send or receive money irrespective of the payment platforms on which you are registered. And now, Nandan Nilekani -- who helped the government create the biometric identification for almost 1.4 billion people after co-founding Infosys -- believes that Open Network for Digital Commerce or ONDC meets all the criteria for the next revolution and disruption in India. It has the government's commitment, the market condition is rife and there is a massive shift to e-commerce after the pandemic. ONDC seeks to level the playing field for small merchants in the country's fragmented but fast-growing $1 trillion retail market. While addressing a conference, Nilekani recently said that ONDC is very similar to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) -- which is also a non-profit section 8 company. Giving some details, Nilekani said that ONDC will put in place the ground rules, the network participation rules, the obligation and dispute resolution. It will have set of top class protocols to govern the online trade. It will lead the country towards transaction-led internet from the western model of advertisement-led internet. The small-scale implementation of ONDC kicked off on Friday last week. This pilot is being conducted across Delhi, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Bhopal and Shillong. It will be later launched in 100 cities over a period of six months. ONDC will set protocols in critical areas like price discovery, vendor match, and cataloguing, ostensibly in open source. So, you ideally get an open network with open specifications and protocols. Clearly, there's a lot of stress on the ‘open' part. Although, not everyone agrees on calling ONDC a public good either. All of this is in the service of one goal -- to change the e-commerce market's fundamental structure by moving from the current platform-centric model to an open-network model. For instance, leather jacket seller Karan is only registered on Amazon. Meanwhile, Arjun, a prospective buyer who has heard of Karan's quality jackets, is registered on Flipkart alone. Arjun will first look for Karan on Flipkart. After failing to find him there, Arjun will have to register for an Amazon account. However, once ONDC is implemented, Arjun can directly purchase Karan's leather jackets without registering on Amazon.       Why is this such a big deal, though? There's no prohibition on Karan also registering as a Flipkart seller. Meanwhile, buyers shop across platforms as a matter of routine. With an account only on one e-commerce site, Arjun is probably an outlier.     Clearly, the real benefit would come in the form of future offerings that could be built on top of this platform-agnostic approach.     Once ONDC gets implemented, all e-commerce companies and online businesses in India will have to operate using the same processes and standards, as in the case of android-based mobile devices from different brands. According to reports, this could mean a complete revamp of systems for e-commerce players. They could end up losing control over their user interface, and, even more importantly, consumer behaviour insights. Basically, their competitive advantages. All of this amounts to a far-reaching and difficult reconfiguration. ONDC's may also erode Amazon and Wa

Open Network for Digital Commerce or ONDC is the Indian government's alternative to the American “laissez-faire, completely market-driven model”. It aims to be seller-first and consumer-focussed and to shift power away from the e-commerce giants.
