Our April show is a special one to us. True to its title, "The Dregs" features some things coming to an end. For one, this is Zach Dresch's last show as a member of our House Blend; he is our beloved drummer and all-around funny guy, and we can't wait to have him back as a guest in the future. Our skits and music highlight the end of a long winter (and fake spring) and the beginning of spring. The featured guest musicians are Brady and Katie Wrede of "Common Ground," and we're lucky enough to have snagged Andrew "Ole" Olson of "Olson Opens Cards" to kick off the beginning of baseball season! This show is sure to be a home run! See you soon, Midtowners! (Oh... and make sure you listen until the end of the show for a special announcement...) Today we will be looking at my picks for the top altcoins of April. But first, we’ll review my crypto picks from March to see how those fared. For my March picks, we used Token Metrics, and this month we will be using it again, but with a slightly different strategy. With the Coinbase IPO on the horizon, I believe we can see April outperform March as the price of Bitcoin rises. Our April coins are our best bets on which altcoins will outperform BTC and they are backed by our favorite coin research site. RUN This week we recap a 5K from Virtual Pace Series, the May the 4th Be With You 5K. This race is from the Virtual Pace Series website. You might remember that we completed the Top Run Challenge from their collection and talked about it on episode 108 and 109. Our April race in Orlando at Walt Disney World, the Rival Run Challenge, was canceled, of course. So, that led us to complete a couple of different Star Wars virtual races from Virtual Pace Series to get our Star Wars race fix in at home. The medal is amazing, and this race also featured a bib that gave us numbers and, on the other side, finisher certificate. EAT In a week, we will all be celebrating Memorial Day Weekend. Usually, this is a long holiday weekend for most, filled with friends, family, and cookouts indicating the unofficial start of summer. While that may not be the case this year, we wanted to feature a recipe we discovered in The Healthspan Solution that will help us celebrate the holiday weekend with a classic dish that you might see at cookouts: potato salad. You will remember that we featured the Healthspan Solution on episode 108 and 109 as well when we were lucky enough to talk with authors Julieanna Hever and Ray Cronise. This dish, the Herbed Dijon Potato Salad is only one tasty salad recipe in the book that is hearty, filling, and makes us feel like we are celebrating, even though we are not necessarily indulging in a typical, high-calorie potato salad that may have the mayonnaise, bacon, and salt that we are trying to eliminate as we train for fall races. The Healthspan Solution has great recipes that are plant-based and flavorful! And you can add protein while increasing the nutrient-dense content in your meals without sacrificing flavor. You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here. And if you want to hear more from Ray and Julieanna, check out their podcast, Science and Saucery. DRINK Back in episode 110, we interviewed Erick Kanter, proprietor of Expedition Roasters. In our chat, we focused on the coffee, because as you know, we love great coffee. This week, we decided to branch out and taste his tea as well. His tea is popular, and we have other varieties on our wish list, but this week we tried Mrs. Nesbitt's Darjeeling Tea. This loose-leaf tea requires one teaspoon of tea to steep in 8 ounces of hot water. While Erick’s Disney-themed tea infusers are being restocked, we used a tea infuser that harkens back to our love of The Avengers and is shaped like Thor’s hammer! This tea has notes of apple and honeysuckle. Very comforting. SPECIAL DISCOUNT ON EXPEDITION ROASTERS ORDERS FOR US! Erick was kind enough to offer a special discount for our listeners! Our April news coverage focused on the COVID-19 pandemic, but that coverage took our team to many different areas. We’ll hear from healthcare professionals and teachers. That’s all still to come on the April News Roundup on WBOI Presents. Our theme music is by Mark Waldick. Additional music comes from Mark Waldick, Noah Campodonico, and Kurt Roemke. As a story teller I’m interested both in what stories I need to tell and what stories people want to hear. When a question came up in our April 7 salon about how the collective trauma of the Covid-19 pandemic could impact the nature of storytelling, we thought it merited exploration. Now archeologist and researcher specialist in ancient epidemics Sarah Yeomans and I are joined by Rob Latimer, historian, writer and teacher as we delve into this. As we’ll discuss, how we communicate these events can be critical to policy and societal shift in the brief window that we’ll have before we'll want to forget and move on. We could be poised for a golden age of story not unlike the modernist period of the 1920s. Useful links to things referenced in the episode:Our April 7th episode that produced this inquiryLynn Ferguson's live storytelling class, Fish & BearPast epidemics have produced books like Love in the Time of Cholera, Pale Horse, Pale Rider, and of course the grandaddy of all plague books, the DecameronPast traumas have produced films like United 93 and Philadelphia and every WW2 movie ever. But sometimes a remove is needed as in the case of MASH set in the Korean War but about the Vietnam War.Superheroes give us a sense of order and protection but what happens when they are as corrupt as the forces they're supposed to be saving us from as in Amazon's excellent The Boys Finally, storytellers are already processing this into story as with this American Quarantined in Paris

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. Our April issue features some local environmental heroes. We share five stories of Tulsans working to make a positive difference. Among those is Nathan Pickard, and his wife Kristin, who have been hard at work creating The Joinery. It’s a regenerative building located in the Heights, just north of downtown. It’s the first building in the state to seek the Living Building Challenge certification from the International Living Future Institute. There are only two dozen fully-certified living buildings in the world. To achieve that status, the Pickards and team, led architect Molly Jones, have to meet 20 stringent requirements to reach their goal. That includes things like solar power, an independent water source, a garden and much more. It turns out, a pandemic creates a good test of the building’s purpose in providing basic needs in a time of crisis. Some call the Pickards doomsday preppers and others call them hippies. In a conversation we did by phone, Nathan discusses where they fall on the spectrum and how he’s excited about the massive amount of sweet potatoes they have stocked up from their garden. He also reflects on what led he and his friends to start the project and how he hopes it catches on their neighborhood. We also discuss his involvement with Up With Trees, which includes creating the Tisdale Food Forest along the LL Tisdale Parkway that provides the community with fruits and nuts, while also serving as a natural sound barrier for the neighborhood. In a time when we’re re-examining how we operate in our daily lives, this conversation provides insight on how we can work with our natural resources to be better prepared in challenging times like the one we find ourselves in during the COVID-19 pandemic.Following that conversation, I’m sharing my interview with Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s new CEO Lori Long. When we talked by phone late last week, she was just 10 days into the job. It’s an unprecedented time for the food bank. They provide food to folks in 24 counties. It used to be about 463,000 meals a week. As of last week, they were up to about 750,000 meals a week and that number is going up as unemployment rises. The nonprofit is low on inventory with corporate food drives ending as people are forced to work from home. There’s a growing budget deficit as they purchase food and expand operations, while losing out on the opportunity for traditional fundraising. But according to Lori, the staff of nearly 80 continues to have good spirits as they work hard to ensure Oklahomans have food to feed themselves and their families in these challenging days. You can visit OKFoodbank.org to learn how to get assistance or provide help as they continue to work hard to meet the growing needs. This is Tulsa Talks with Nathan Pickard and Lori Long.

The most important question you need to be thinking about right now: What is your opportunity? Continuing to do everything in your business is … EXPENSIVE. Efficiency is all about understanding how to use your resources (time, money, labor, etc.) more effectively so that you can use LESS and get the SAME or BETTER results. That’s no longer a luxury, that’s essential to stay in business over the next 3-12 months. You need to be looking at your business with a critical eye and clarifying where you can cut back without losing revenue. This will help you increase your profit margins and overtime can increase revenue overall as you divert the resources you ARE using into the right places. That’s efficiency. That’s clockworking. NOW is the time to be fixing the cracks in your foundation so that you can make it through this + be even stronger on the other side of it. On this week’s Run Like Clockwork episode (taken from a live training + Q+A session), I share 5 tips for being EFFICIENT during these uncertain times + market: Use you data/metrics. Create a plan. Trash, trim + transfer things off your plate. Stop multitasking. Take some downtime. I explained these tips in more depth on this livestream as well as took questions from small business owners just like you. I answered questions like… Should I stop making investments in my business right now? What should I do if I have an upcoming promotion? Should we continue to sell? Are certain industries seeing more of a "slow-down" than others right now? How can I serve my audience + community more? I had to send my team home, and can’t keep up with business, how do I communicate with my clients? Why we're still enrolling for our RLC Accelerator program. What’s your best advice for a small business owner in danger of shutting down? + more! If you have questions not addressed on this episode, drop your questions over on Instagram @rlclockwork and we will either answer them there or in an upcoming episode. Reminder: none of us predicted this, and none of us have experienced anything like it, but we get to choose how we're going to react and respond as a business owner to it all. It's our responsibility to keep our businesses' afloat through this challenging time, and I believe you can do it. Experiences like this form the foundation of our strength. If you’re interested in receiving our support with creating more efficiency in your business right now, we’ve just opened up an extended 12 part payment plan for our Run Like Clockwork Accelerator program. This is the best way for us to support you in becoming ultra-efficient in this uncertain economy. Our highest priority is to help keep as many small business owners in business through this challenging time. Our April cohort starts Monday, March 30th, 2020!
On today's episode, we're sharing tips for working with plush fabrics -- plush makes the coziest quilts, but it can be a challenge to work with, so we hope our tips help! We'll be sharing some important details for everyone looking to join in! And since it's the week of Valentine's Day, we're sharing a cute poem to sewing machines. Our April look at Jesus-centric films continues with 1973's rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR! How does JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR differ in its depiction of Jesus' story? Other than, ya know, characters breaking out into song? We'll trace the film's beginnings from a concept album by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber to Broadway show to, finally, a cult classic film... and beyond! Where did the idea for the film come from? Who was originally slated to play Jesus? Why was the stage production (and subsequent film adaptation) the source of controversy? These are all subjects that we'll tackle on this episode of the show, as well as our own opinions on the film, and its depiction of Jesus and his relationship with Judas Iscariot. Our April 12th week in review episode covers 5 stories that affect local communities. Our format has us dive a little deeper into the 5th story each week. In the first 4 stories we cover Teacher Licensing, Veterans seeking elective office, BlackRock – the worlds largest asset manager and a state government shifting school cost to local governments. The big story this week covers invasive species. Wimmer’s Wilderness is an informed look at Politics, Community, Government, Environment and Education from a local perspective. Our regions, states and countries are simply a collection of local communities working together. If we are able to make a positive change in our local communities then that will lead to better outcomes at the regional, state and national level.

Our April 2018 Narrative Medicine Rounds, welcomed the novelist Richard Ford, who speaks about his memoir, " Between them: Remembering my Parents," published in 2017 by The Ecco Press. Mr. Ford, the Emmanuel Roman and Barrie Sardoff Roman Professor of the Humanities, has been teaching at Columbia University's School of the Arts since 2012. For Mr. Ford, whose 1995 novel Independence Day, was the first book to receive both the Pulitzer Prize and the Pen/Faulkner Award, the questions of what his parents dreamed of, how they loved each other and loved him became a striking portrait of American life in the mid-century in Between Them. Bringing his candor, wit and intelligence to his most intimate and mysterious of landscapes- our parents' lives- he delivers an exploration of memory, intimacy and love.
In Episode 30 we share our responses to the March prompt (the word "peremptory"), which gives us a chance to dig into the background of Meghan's novel's plot and also, as always, cats. Our April event is traditionally an open mic where anyone can come and read, but just for 5 minutes. For reasons that will be explained on the podcast, this month's event was hosted by Tom Parker. The readers in this session are: Cheryl Morgan, with part of a short story about Amazons in Space; Ian McConaghy with the opening of a science fiction novel set in near future Los Angeles; Joanne Hall with a short story about monks, illuminated manuscripts and dragons; and Felicia Barker with a fantasy short story featuring some very famous fairies. BristolCon Fringe is a monthly reading series produced by the BristolCon Foundation. For further details see our Venue and Schedule pages.
Our April meetup gave us a chance to talk about the power of cross-promotion by engaging in some cross-promotion — I love me some meta. We had a chance to talk Fawnda Mithrush, who is managing director of NorthwestFest, Edmonton's international festival of nonfiction film, art and music. Fawnda is the brain behind LunchPods, a series of live podcast shows on at The Needle Vinyl Tavern throughout this week in conjunction with the film festival. Fawnda also hosted I Don't Get It, an award-winning podcast about contemporary dance, which she's hoping to resurrect one of these days. But she's an awfully busy person — besides helping Guy Lavallee put on NorthwestFest, she is also the executive director of LitFest, the nonfiction literary festival that comes to Edmonton this fall. In the episode, you'll hear all about LunchPods, as well as the "wicked fun" of doing a podcast about dance; why we need to find ways for creative people to get paid; how podcasts fit in with NorthwestFest and might fit into LitFest in the fall; why nonfiction appeals to her and to Edmonton; and the collaborative spirit of our city. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. The LunchPods will be recorded, so if you miss one, you can catch up, but of course it's more fun to hear in person (plus there's lunch provided): May 8: Passion Pods: Where Art and Sport Collide: Taylor Chadwick of What It Is interviewed Erika Ensign of Beginner’s Puck and Steven Schapansky of Hockey Feels about arts and sports; May 9: Dime a Dozen: Podcasting About Film: Paul Matwychuk and Erin E. Fraser of Trash, Art, and the Movies will talk to Matt Bowes of Bollywood is for Lovers and JP Fournier of The Movie Jerks about movie podcasts; May 10: Short Story Long: How Podcasts Pick Up Where News Outlets Drop Off: Alex Zabjek and Trisha Estabrooks of The Broadcast will discuss podcasting as a vehicle for journalism; May 11: Sound and Fury: The Key to Outstanding Sound and Content: Adam Rozenhart of The Expats will explore the importance of great sound and structure with Sam Power of All Intensive Purposes and Lauren Albrecht of Nerd Nite Edmonton. May 12: Together We're Stronger: YEG's Podcast Community: I’ll be talking to Trina Shessel of the Northern Nerdcast and Ben Yendall of Tales from the Hydian Way about cultivating an Edmonton podcasting community. Many thanks to NorthwestFest, Flatter:Me Belts and Variant Edition for donating door prizes, and to CafeRista for catering. (Extra shout-out to Variant Edition for hosting us despite having a flood in their store mere hours before the event. Heroes!) I said at the end of this episode that there might not be a meetup in May, but I've changed my mind, because I have big news to share: We're creating the Alberta Podcast Network, powered by ATB! Read the back story, and then join us at the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup on May 28 at Variant Edition to discuss the network, where I'll answer as many of your questions as I can. This episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Castria, where award-winning podcasters help you take your podcast from idea to reality. Castria’s Erika Ensign and Steven Schapansky record and edit both our live meetups and the regular interviews you hear on Seen and Heard in Edmonton. If you’d like them to help you, visit wearecastria.com. Musical credits: Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 2 No. 1, played by Daniel Veesey, from freemusicarchive.com.
