I feel that I owe you more of an explanation. As you well know by now, I've been having a rough time for the past couple of months, but because I've been such a wreck, I haven't been able to give you the details about how and why I got to such a dark place. It's been a while since my husband David Sloane joined me on the show. But he will be here today. Yes, the election took and continues to take a toll on our collective psyche, but there's much more than that doing on right now, and I believe it's my responsibility to let you know just what has me in this dark place. So I've enlisted David to come in and help me explain. I know that THIS isn't what most people tune into this show for. But I also know, based on your emails and messages from the past few days, that many of you do care. Today's show will hopefully be cathartic for more than a few of us. And for everyone else, the show will continue the rest of the week with Lisa Graves, Howie Klein and emptywheel on Wed, Thu and Fri respectively. As always, thank you for bearing with me... After a look at what's happening in our world today, we'll talk about something that affects so many of us. Sadly, it tends to get worse this time of the year. Depression affects everyone, regardless of age, race and financial situation, though I'd guess those struggling are more likely to be depressed--- but not necessarily. Women are more prone to depression, though both genders suffer from bipolar disorder equally. There are other afflictions that often accompany depression, most notably anxiety and bi polar disorder and more. It is an epidemic with no cure in sight. But there is a rising dependency on drugs -- anti depressants. But they're not a cure-all and, in many cases, make the situation worse. Long time listeners of this show know that I've struggled with depression since adolescence. I've had my share of meltdowns on the air, most notably during the Former Guy's reign of terror. But I've been doing much better lately. Today, I'll be joined by my husband, David Sloane, who has suffered from PTSD for decades since he was pulled unconscious from a burning car in the desert some 40 years ago by a stranger who happened upon the crash and saved his life. Well, there is help on the horizon and it's very encouraging as it does not include drugs. We'll have a serious discussion about our depression epidemic and what can be done to help those who are suffering...

Reading A Promised Land by Barack Obama in January 2021 is a bit of a trip. In some places, the reader feels the swell of nostalgia, the remembrance of governance and a time free of COVID-19. Other times, the juxtaposition Obama's words, with a deep reverence for democracy, and the insurrection of January 6th feels painful.   A Promise Land is part one of what will be a two part Presidential memoir. Much of the book is process and policy heavy, giving the reader a close glimpse of the daily life of the leader of the free world. Even when the topic is heavy, Obama's writing lifts that heaviness and delivers a long fireside chat filled with the intelligence and humor we've come to associate with him.   Host Aubrey Hicks is joined by LaVonna Lewis, Olivia Olson, David Sloane, and Ehsan Zaffar. We discuss the things we missed, the things we loved, and the book that also needs be written - and whose responsibility that might be.   For links to some of the things we talked about, visit our showpage.

Using contemporary examples, Kate Manne's Down Girl: The Logic of Misogyny, explores the definitions of misogyny and its contrast with sexism. The book is a philosophical examination of misogyny as the policing of the patriarchal state, serving to punish women who might step out of the assigned giver role. An important read, it is also not a book for the faint of heart, as David Sloane says this is a dispirited look into the state of misogyny in the US (and the author's native Australia). Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. David talks about his recent lecture that gave him the opportunity to shoot World War II era guns with World War II vets. Family Histoire News begins with a summary of Olivia Coleman’s recent experience on “Who Do You Think You Are?” in England. Hear what ethnicity makes her now feel a little less “ordinary.” Then, it’s the story of a food truck. But not like the one that visits your office on Wednesdays. This one collects family recipes and gives people the opportunity to cook them up! A woman whose DNA results devastated her with news that her father wasn’t her father has started an on line organization for people in her situation. And it turns out that there are a lot more than she imagined. David then talks about a tale from the Titanic that has not received a lot of attention. You’ll know more about it soon. David then shines his “blogger spotlight” on Kenneth R. Marks. Ken blogs about helpful techniques to make your journey less “bumpy.” Visit his blog at TheAncestorHunt.com/blog. Next, in two segments, Fisher visits with Dr. David Sloane, an English professor at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Dr. Sloane is a great grandson of Thomas Edison. He talks about how that relationship has influenced his life, the challenge of living up to the legacy, and challenges to the Edison legacy. In segment two, Dr. Sloane shares some family stories and memories of his mother and great grandmother, Edison’s wife. Then, Tom Perry, the Preservation Authority from TMCPlace.com, talks with Fisher about attics in the summertime. If you ever imaged there were monsters in the attic, you were right! Especially when it comes to your family photos, home movies, and videos, and the heat and critters of summer. That’s all this week on Extreme Genes, America’s Family History Show!

Eva Dolan's This Is How It Ends is a thriller set in an anti-gentrification activist community in the middle of a rapidly gentrifying London. Dolan tackles the huge issue of gentrification through the story of two women engaged in the anti-gentrification movement. How do we define ourselves in places? How do we protect the self in social media, public, activist movements?  In today’s episode, we marvel at Dolan's ability to mirror the gentrification fight with the relationship between young activist Ella and the older mentor Molly. We think about mentoring, gentrification, family, policing, and so many other themes as we discuss this tight thriller which is also social commentary.  Lisa Schweitzer (@drschweitzer), Brettany Shannon (@brettanyshannon), and David Sloane (@dcsloane53) join Aubrey Hicks (@AubreyHi) for this episode. Though we are sad to bid farewell to “Our American Discourse,” we welcome the opportunity to talk about farewells—indeed, the hardest farewells of all: those that happen after death. How do we say goodbye to the past? And what does our farewell mean for the lives gone before us and for the future that will come after them? It is time to break the “death taboo” and have one last real conversation about the one last real experience we all must confront. In this episode, David Charles Sloane tells the history of the American cemetery, and in that story, we find the evolution of our own existential approach to life, death, and beyond. American Gods is the story of America as a quilted patchwork of immigrant cultures with a diverse and every-growing number of beliefs. The story begins with Shadow, released from jail several days early because his wife is killed in a car accident. He encounters the mysterious Mr. Wednesday almost immediately upon release – once, twice, and again and is offered a job. He discovers that Mr. Wednesday is Odin, the Lord of Asgard, symbol of the forgotten gods living throughout America. With jobs ranging from prostitute to taxi driver, these "old" gods make do while they hope that Americans will remember, and honor them. Their holy places are the roadside attractions so dismissed by modern Americans. Their hope to be remembered is apparently in conflict with a new set of gods; Media, Town, Credit Cards, and others whose temples are our shopping malls. Shadow has a series of adventures, some in real life, some in dreams, as he journeys from someone not quite alive to the key individual in the upcoming battle for supremacy between the old and new gods. The novel is a fascinating exploration of the meaning of ethnicity, modernism, memory, and community in which we are reminded of the many ethnicities that make up America, but also their amalgamation into a secular American society with few gods. As multiple characters remind us, America is a hard place to be a god. This is a quintessential American novel from a quintessential British storyteller – it’s a sprawling road trip into the vast highways and byways of the American landscape, it’s a horror novel, a mystery, a romance, a western, a fantasy, and ultimately a look into the heart of America. In this edition of the Bedrosian Book Club Podcast, we discuss Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters, by Michael S. Roth. The book has been getting a lot of media attention in the higher ed circles. And we think it’s a decidedly important topic, one that impacts governance dramatically. Roth takes an historic look at thought on education in America. From Jefferson to DeBois to Dewey, there has always been a sense that education makes good citizens; that liberal education allows the citizen to learn to think about things, and therefore make good public decisions. Education in America is the historic foundation of democracy and freedom. Yet, we seem to ask ourselves what we should do differently, what can we improve and today there is a sense of anti-intellectualism that pervades the culture. Does liberal education matter?
