It's our 5th Anniversary this month. As part of the celebration, we will post flashback episodes all month long to celebrate and say thank you. If it were not for you, our Runcation Nation community, we would not have had this show for the last five years, had some of the most amazing experiences, and created lasting friendships in this community. Next up is part 2 of our interview with a friend of the show, Bart Yasso! RUN  This week, we share part 2 of our talk with Bart Yasso.  He is known as the Mayor of Running and Chief Running Officer at Runner's World until his retirement in 2017. This week, he talks about the Yasso 800s, runners who inspire him, and virtual races.  Thank you, Bart, for your “wit, wisdom, and insights!” Find out more and connect with Bart Yasso here: Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/Bart-Yasso-118295040323/  Twitter:  https://twitter.com/bartyasso?lang=en  Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bartyasso/  Website:  http://www.bartyasso.com  EAT This has been a rough winter for many of our running friends.  There is nothing better than a recipe that warms the soul to celebrate that accomplishment when it comes to getting out there for a run in the cold.  A great Irish comfort food dish that we love is Shepard's Pie.  There is a great place in Disney Springs we have featured on the show before, Raglan Road, with a delectable and meaty version of this dish. We have featured one of our favorite cookbooks, The Healthspan Solution, on past episodes, including chatting with authors Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever on Episodes 108 and 109 last year.   This week we made the Shepherdess Pie from the book.  We review it in this episode and talk about what made it so hearty and satisfying as a Vegetarian dish.   You can get the Kindle or hardcover book at our Amazon affiliate links below.  It does not cost anything additional to purchase the book through the links we list, but it does help support the show. The Healthspan Solution Kindle Edition:  https://amzn.to/3r15Xhx  The Healthspan Solution Hardcover Edition:  https://amzn.to/2ObqgtV  DRINK  We talked about a couple of favorite holiday drinks that warm the soul back in Episode 88 of our show.  We typically make a Mulled wine each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas to share with the family.   It can help you celebrate a live race you've run this winter or help you warm up after a run in particularly harsh winter conditions.   We linked to a recipe online but did not share our recipe in that particular episode. This week, we feature our recipe with an option for reduced sugar. Ingredients (Serves 6-8 cups of wine) 1 - 750 ml bottles of a favorite red wine ( we selected a barrel-aged Cabernet Sauvignon  2 oranges- zest and juice of one and the other sliced in rounds to use for garnish 8 whole cloves  4 cinnamon sticks  2 whole nutmegs *Normally a cup of sugar and water are added to sweeten the recipe. To make a more healthful version, you can leave this out and drink it without sweetening or use agave nectar or honey to taste with each serving.   Directions Pour wine into the instant pot or crock pot. Add the zest of the orange.  Squeeze the juice of the orange into the wine and add the whole orange into the pot.  Cook on low for two hours.  Pour into mugs, stir in agave nectar or honey to sweeten, if desired, with a garnish of an orange slice and enjoy!   If you choose to indulge, please drink responsibly by having a designated driver or taking a rideshare service. Stay safe, Runcation Nation! THAT'S A WRAP! - Here's hoping you are off to a great year in 2021! RUN First, our coach, Jeff Galloway, has a great new podcast out.  You Can Do It is a collaboration between Jeff and his son, Westin, to chronically Jeff’s incredible career as an Olympian and America’s coach.  Thanks to Wendel from the runcation nation for sharing it with everyone.  Check it out on your next long run!   This week, we ran a 5K for a great cause, Stand Up To Cancer.  The Come To The Dark Side, We Have Coffee 5K combines one of our favorite movies AND our favorite morning beverage!  We talk about our experience running this virtual 5K.  The swag included a bib, a well-themed finisher’s medal, and even a t-shirt, too!  It made the running experience better to know that we could support a great organization while celebrating the theme of coffee and Star Wars.   All of this was brought to us by the I Run for Movement virtual races website. They have a variety of themes from Back to the Future to World’s Okayest Runners Club and the Turtle Running Team, too.  This website has a whole host of virtual races with swag but even better, each one is connected to a great organization like Stand Up To Cancer, Feeding America, and First Responders Children’s Foundation.  Check it out because in this time, when 2020 seems to be the year of the virtual, you can get some great bling and support some great causes.    EAT This week we wanted to discuss another tasty recipe we discovered in The Healthspan Solution that will help us stay on track with our training.  Labor Day is usually the unofficial end of summer.  There is a refreshing salad in the book that has helped us stay cool in this unforgiving Florida heat and humidity.   it is called the Chili Avocado Citrus Bowl.  The dressing has hints of barbecue flavor in the dressing and the layers of texture with the spring mix, the creamy avocado, tangy pomegranate, and juicy citrus are perfect for an outdoor holiday cookout this holiday weekend or as a filling lunch during the week. We featured The Healthspan Solution on episode 108 and 109 as well when we were lucky enough to talk with authors Julieanna Hever and Ray Cronise.  It has become a cornerstone of our cooking at home. The Healthspan Solution has great recipes that are plant-based and flavorful!  And you can absolutely add protein while increasing the nutrient-dense content in your meals without sacrificing flavor.  You can get the hardback version of The Healthspan Solution here or the Kindle version by clicking here. DRINK  Momentum Brewhouse and Grumpy Goat Coffee collaborated to bring us two great special release beers.  This week, we taste Thigh Highs, which combines Momentum’s Knee Highs Imperial Red and Grumpy Goat’s Colombian Dark Roast Coffee.  Plus, Pierce’s Pale infused with a Blonde Roast from this local team.  A lighter and a darker offering to try.  Momentum partners with local food trucks as well and always lets us know when they are stopping by and a great food and beer pairing to try.  Cheers to this great collaboration between Momentum Brewhouse and Grumpy Goat Coffee.   THAT’S A WRAP! RUN   This week, it was time for a long run.  Aimee talks about challenges with the motivation to get it done.  It is also a week to talk about taking it easy around an injury and not overdo it.  Dana talks about how to get it done with a busy work schedule.  He also updates us on his testing of his latest training tool.     We also discuss the latest in a series of races to convert to virtual:  Walt Disney World Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend.  Which races are next?  Should we write off 2020 all together?  Does that mean Marathon Weekend 2021 is in jeopardy?  Will smaller, local races still happen?  Have you seen any or run any smaller races?  Only time will tell...   EAT   This week we wanted to feature a recipe we discovered in The Healthspan Solution that will help us stay on track with our training.  Big flavors are a hallmark of Indian cooking and we needed some this week, so we made Chana Masala.  It is a hearty and flavorful stew served over rice.  It is really not hard to make and has the spice we were craving.  We featured the The Healthspan Solution on episode 108 and 109 as well, when we were lucky enough to talk with authors Julieanna Hever and Ray Cronise.  It has become a cornerstone of our cooking at home.   The Healthspan Solution has great recipes that are plant-based and flavorful!  And you can absolutely add protein while increasing the nutrient-dense content in your meals without sacrificing flavor.    You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here.   And if you want to hear more from Ray and Julieanna, check out their podcast, Science and Saucery.     DRINK   The local brewery scene has taken a hit lately, so we have decided to show some love to these places that we want to see make it through this tough time for many in the beer industry.  Millennial Brewing has a beer that intrigues us this week and we had to try it.     Pickle juice has long been rumored to help runners with cramps.  But what about a pickle beer?  We posted a picture of one in our Runcation Nation Facebook group. Then we found one locally at Millennial Brewing.   Enter La Picklabod Pickle Sour.  Will it taste like carbonated pickle juice and make us pucker?  No, actually.  It is a milder flavor and it cries out for a juicy cheeseburger, with pickle, of course!   THAT’S A WRAP!   If you love what you hear, now, you can become a patron and support the show!  There are multiple patronage levels from $2 to $10, each with their own special perks.       Find out more and support the show here: https://www.patreon.com/Runeatdrinkpodcast    Or if you are a Podbean user, here: https://patron.podbean.com/runeatdrinkpodcast    This week we are so excited to welcome Meghan Brower as our newest Founder on Patreon!  She sent us a special message that brought tears to our eyes.  Meghan, we can’t wait to run with you at a race, hopefully, a Disney one, and thank you for your support of the Run Eat Drink Podcast.  Look for her name on the patron wall at www.runeatdrink.net!   Share a great virtual race or a place where we should all run, eat, and drink together when this tough time is over!  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. RUN This week we recap a 5K from Virtual Pace Series, the May the 4th Be With You 5K.  This race is from the Virtual Pace Series website.  You might remember that we completed the Top Run Challenge from their collection and talked about it on episode 108 and 109. Our April race in Orlando at Walt Disney World, the Rival Run Challenge, was canceled, of course.  So, that led us to complete a couple of different Star Wars virtual races from Virtual Pace Series to get our Star Wars race fix in at home.  The medal is amazing, and this race also featured a bib that gave us numbers and, on the other side, finisher certificate.  EAT In a week, we will all be celebrating Memorial Day Weekend.  Usually, this is a long holiday weekend for most, filled with friends, family, and cookouts indicating the unofficial start of summer.  While that may not be the case this year, we wanted to feature a recipe we discovered in The Healthspan Solution that will help us celebrate the holiday weekend with a classic dish that you might see at cookouts:  potato salad.  You will remember that we featured the Healthspan Solution on episode 108 and 109 as well when we were lucky enough to talk with authors Julieanna Hever and Ray Cronise. This dish, the Herbed Dijon Potato Salad is only one tasty salad recipe in the book that is hearty, filling, and makes us feel like we are celebrating, even though we are not necessarily indulging in a typical, high-calorie potato salad that may have the mayonnaise, bacon, and salt that we are trying to eliminate as we train for fall races.   The Healthspan Solution has great recipes that are plant-based and flavorful!  And you can add protein while increasing the nutrient-dense content in your meals without sacrificing flavor.  You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here. And if you want to hear more from Ray and Julieanna, check out their podcast, Science and Saucery.   DRINK Back in episode 110, we interviewed Erick Kanter, proprietor of Expedition Roasters.  In our chat, we focused on the coffee, because as you know, we love great coffee.  This week, we decided to branch out and taste his tea as well.  His tea is popular, and we have other varieties on our wish list, but this week we tried Mrs. Nesbitt's Darjeeling Tea.  This loose-leaf tea requires one teaspoon of tea to steep in 8 ounces of hot water.  While Erick’s Disney-themed tea infusers are being restocked, we used a tea infuser that harkens back to our love of The Avengers and is shaped like Thor’s hammer! RUN In this run segment, we talk about a virtual race challenge we finished this week.  We grew up in the ’80s, and we love so many movies from that decade.  So when the Virtual Pace Series website introduced the Top Gun Challenge, and we saw the medal, we knew we had to do it.   We recap our Half Marathon and the completion of our challenge this week. EAT We have been cooking from The Healthspan Solution by Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever.    This week it is time to hear the second part of their interview.  Ray and Julieanna were so generous with their time. In this portion of our talk with them, they gave us such great information about the foundation of their book and how they got started in the field of plant-based eating and why it helps people “add life to their years.”  Their book has great recipes that are plant-based and flavorful!  And you can absolutely add protein while increasing the nutrient-dense content in your meals without sacrificing flavor.  You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here. And if you want to hear more from Ray and Julieanna, check out their podcast, Science and Saucery.   DRINK We are gearing up for part 2 of #southcapetakeoutweekend2020 ! It is hosted to support local restaurants and breweries to showcase their contactless curbside and delivery options.  We wanted to support them and help keep them going while following all safety protocols so that when we come through this, there are still the great places we know and love locally that we can explore and indulge.   One local that we want to feature this week is Narrative Coffee Roasters.  Although not part of the takeout weekend, owners, Caleb and Megan MacPherson, are doing local contactless delivering of outstanding coffee from Naples to Punta Gorda.  The coffee is thoughtfully selected and roasted.  Caleb drops some great coffee knowledge on us this week.  You can get his great coffee locally, or you can go to the website and have whole-bean or ground coffee delivered anywhere in the US!  Thanks, Caleb!  It was a great time! THAT’S A WRAP! Next week, we would have been at Walt Disney World, running the Star Wars Rival Run Challenge and completing the Kessel Run Challenge.  We know many of you may be feeling the #fomo, too!  We want to bring some RunDisney home!  Share a RunDisney memory with us so we can make it a bit easier for everyone in the Runcation Nation!  Our email is info@runeatdrink.net. Or you can call 941- 677-2733.  Leave us a 1-minute message letting us know your favorite and even places you celebrated at Disney after the running was done! Thank you for listening! RUN In this run segment, we talk to America’s Coach Jeff Galloway about tips for the current situation many of us find ourselves in as runners.  He talks about how to stay positive and resources to keep us going and help in this stressful time.  We are so grateful that he took the time to speak with us.  You can find his timer and books as well as other resources he discussed at www.jeffgalloway.com.   If you have training or running questions for him, send them to jfg@jeffgalloway.com.   Jeff asked us if we wouldn't mind sharing this.  Here is a link to the website that Dr. Ruth Parker, his medical advisor from Emory University, sent to Jeff if anyone has concerns that they may need to be tested for the Corona Virus: https://c19check.com/start  Dr. Parker’s explanation of the website:  “This COVID-19 self-screening tool has been released for free, public use.  My health educator colleague, Kara Jacobson, and I did the ‘health literacy’ review of its content, building on work we did with this team years ago during the H1N1 epidemic.  Its content is based on the best-available evidence, and the team that worked to develop it is excellent (the tech for its support was donated by a great tech start-up). Its purpose is to help people check symptoms (on a smartphone) to see if they need to go to the ER….hoping to keep folks out who do not need to be there.” Jeff also talked about looking forward to virtual races now and fall races as a way to stay motivated.  He mentioned three fun race weekends in particular that he has been to in the past or is planning on going to again this fall.   You can check them out here: Virtual Race Still Open for Northside Hospital Orthopedic Institute Half Marathon Powered by Jeff Galloway and Barb’s 5K Anchorage Runfest - August 2020 Cannonball Marathon Weekend - October 2020 Des Moines Marathon Weekend - October 2020   EAT We have been cooking from The Healthspan Solution by Ray Cronise and Julieanna Hever.  This week we feature one of our favorites from the book, Lemon Tahini Broccoli Slaw.  It is substantial and filling with chickpeas and has a satisfying smoky flavor with sun-dried tomatoes.  There are so many textures in this salad and the lemon adds a tang that is very pleasing to the palate.  We talk about the book and how it has supported our weight loss and fitness endeavors.  This is only the first of several recipes we will share from the book in the coming weeks. You can get the hardback version of the book here or the Kindle version by clicking here. DRINK We have been asked recently about our daily coffee posts.  We say we love coffee, but what are some of our favorite kinds?  Today, we talk about the El Rayo Espresso Blend from Big Storm Coffee.  Head Roaster, Chris Ramsey, was on our show last year to give us some fun demonstrations.  Now we talk about this specific blend and its cherry and chocolate notes.  Plus, the perfect way to take a French press on the go with you with the Espro Ultralight Coffee Press.  Check it out! This week we chat with fellow podcaster Kevin Gwin of the Extra Mile Podcast and Extra Mile Podcast Galloway Edition.  In this episode he talks about the inception of the podcasts he hosts and what inspired his Extra Mile Virtual to support The Donna Foundation.  If you need support, the Facebook group he started and all the “loveable extra milers” who follow Jeff Galloway’s run-walk-run method to complete runs and races is great.  All of the people in the group are so positive and share their running journeys as well. EAT Fat Point Brewing is a great place in Punta Gorda we featured on Episode 93 of our show.  It was their 5th anniversary this weekend, and we love their brewery, taproom, and people.  So we celebrated with them.  We had some amazing food items that we had at the party.  We both had brat sandwiches, one with sauerkraut and one with grilled peppers and onions.  They were amazing with the Bru Man Chu Mustard.  Because of the special occasion, they had a crawfish and seafood boil that was very tasty! DRINK We also got to sample some more of Fat Point’s amazing beer menu at the taproom.  There was a special version of the Bru Man Chu that had been aged in tequila barrels and some charity beers that were tasty as well.  Of course, we still enjoy Big Boca as a great California Common and Cape Haze as a tasty fruity wheat beer. BREWS ON THE RIVER IN CAPE CORAL We are so excited to be a sponsor of the first-ever Brews on the River on April 18th at Tarpon Point Marina!  This is a craft beer festival in Cape Coral.  We are the official podcast of the event, and we can’t wait to share 20+ breweries plus food trucks and great entertainment with you!  If you are coming to the area or you are local and want to attend the event, we have a $5 off promo code.  Use RUNEATDRINK5 at checkout when purchasing event tickets to get $5 off a general admission ticket or beer enthusiast ticket.  That’s RUNEATDRINK5!  Get your tickets and come toast with us and some great breweries we have featured on the show in the past! I was first introduced to the work Ray was doing a few years back on the Rich Roll Podcast (episode 212) and then again with Julieanna Hever (episode 345). I guess I was a little late to the game, as Ray has been in the world of metabolic research and longevity for quite some time. He's written some really insightful papers (linked below) and he's got some new books in the pipeline as well! I was excited to pick Ray's brain in what turned out to be the longest episode to date on the Alter Your Health podcast... and, we barely scratched the surface of what I wanted to cover. I hope Ray comes back for round 2.   Some highlights include...  Ray's own health journey and how he lost 50 pounds through cold stress Why eating a small portion of fish would exacerbate his insulin resistance What metabolism actually is, and how to measure it (along with brief video presentation by Ray) How the food triangle helps us better understand how to relate with food as fuel Why we need to forget about the words protein, carbs, and fats along with breakfast, lunch, and dinner The one scientifically proven way to extend life through nutrition How a WFPB diet allows us to naturally restrict calories while maintaining optimal nutritional status You may also be interested in another Ayurveda episode... From macro confusion to microbiome, Julieanna Hever shares experiential wisdom and science-based evidence for us all to stew on in this week's episode of the YTP. Her message is simple; don't over complicate nutrition. We don't need to break it down into its elements. We don't need to pursue protein as if we were deficient and we don't need to deprive ourselves along the way to a more healthy, vibrant life. We talk about the protein obsession and things one may expect to encounter when transitioning to a plant-based diet. Most people eat a fiber deficient diet, which is the opposite of a plant-based diet, so there most often is an adjustment period. We talk about the best source of fuel for athletes and our unique nutritional requirements. Armed with hundreds of years of science, Julieanna is on the verge of publishing her 5th book co-authored with Ray Cronise, The Healthspan Solution. She is well-known as the Plant-Based Dietician, and we are all better educated because Julieanna is in the world. So when I had the chance to speak with Julieanna Hever and Ray Cronise i was thanking my lucky stars. Their approach to nutrition is saving lives - just ask Penn Jillette or Kevin Smith. Julieanna and Ray wrote "The Idiot's Guide to Plant Based Nutrition." “Let’s change our dialogue about food. Let’s change our dialogue about exercise. Let’s look at this stuff and let’s change the way we actually do research.”Ray CroniseIf you enjoyed my conversation with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, you're going to love today's conversation with my new friend Ray Cronise.A passionate innovator, disrupter and scientist, Ray began his career as a Materials Scientist at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, where he worked for 15 years in Physical and Analytical Chemistry and Biophysics as Assistant Mission Scientist on four Spacelab missions and projects like the impact of microgravity on biophysics; and space station environmental life support systems.I have no idea what any of that means, but it sounds impressive.Ray went on to co-found ZERO-G– the world’s first private parabolic flight operation – with XPRIZE creator Peter Diamandis. Otherwise known as vomit comets, ZERO-G flights produce weightlessness and approximate space flight conditions for purposes of scientific research, cinema and entertainment. But it wasn't until Tim Ferriss' The 4-Hour Body* featured Ray's pioneering work with cold stress therapy as as a tool for fat loss that Ray began popping up everywhere as the man behind the Metabolic Winter Hypothesis. Results motivated this prodigious scientific mind next to peer keenly into the chemistry, physiology, mechanics and research methodology behind human nutrition — specifically, what is wrong with current nutrition research and how to fix it. After copious investigation, analysis and self-experimentation, he has arrived upon a well supported but perhaps contrarian conclusion: a whole food plant-based diet is optimal for long-term health and wellness.Despite decades spent struggling to manage his own weight and stay fit, for the past six years Ray has kept the weight off using a combination of cold stress, healthful sleep cycles, and a plant-based nutritional regimen.Mainstream culture would deem Ray's ways extreme. But ask Ray and he will tell you that the way most people live and eat today is actually a radical departure from our natural state and is likely the root cause of our epidemic of chronic lifestyle illness. After listening to this guy you will realize one thing – he did not arrive at his conclusions lightly. Conclusions soon to be explored in his upcoming book, Our Broken Plate, which aims to change the way people look at all diets so they can make lasting lifestyle changes that improve what Ray calls healthspan.Over the course of an amazing 3 hours, we cover an absurd amount of territory, including:* Ray's upcoming book ‘Our Broken Plate'* the insanity of our protein obsession* the “over nourishment” of America* the impact of caloric & protein restriction on longevity & cancer* the impact of thermogenesis on diet and exercise* the importance of separating diet and exercise* telomeres and aging* nutrient deficiencies, supplements, instinctive eating; and* exactly how Penn Jillette lost 100 poundsRay is next level when it comes to truly understanding how the body functions, and the profound impact of nutrition on physiological processes. It would be interesting to see if hypoxic swimming has a similar effect on boosting your hormone levels. Sure…if you're running 3 times a week recovery is overrated. But I've never met Ironman triathletes who don't benefit from ice, antioxidants, etc. How long does it take to recover after a marathon? ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Tom asks: I've been hearing a lot out of Jack Kruse, a neurosurgeon-gone-paleo, about cold thermogenesis for health and fat loss. I'd love to hear your take on cold thermogenesis for general health and/or fat loss, as well as its potential use as a training/recovery tool. ~ In my response to Tom, I mention this recent Get-Fit Guy article, and my previous interview with Ray Cronise. Melanie asks: I know you had an interview regarding metabolic typing, but I wanted to know how much stock you put in the details of these type of "diets". I am a protein type and I know that is right for me, but I did the metabolic typing from the Wolcott group website and received a specific list of foods to eat and ones to avoid. Some of the ones for me to avoid are ones that are in the "eat" category in your food pyramid. For example, I'm supposed to rarely have yogurt, cabbage, berries, and completely avoid whey and broccoli. What is your opinion of the Wolcott metabolic type diet? Should I consider cross-referencing your diet and my metabolic type list and eat only what is a match? Also, along the same vein, can you quickly sum up your opinion on the Blood Type Diet? I'm a protein type on that one too, but again some of the foods you recommend would be a no for me on that one. ~ The movie Brock was thinking of is The Road To Wellville. Horacio asks: I'm about to run my first ultra running race in April, 84k Trail race in Patagonia. How fast should I run? I want to be fast but not bonk or have a cramp crisis. Last year I ran this same race but only the 42k version. I probably ran it near my anaerobic threshold or about 165-170 bpm... but for the 84k I plan to go much slower. This is my plan: I've been following Phil Mafftone's advice and I've trained mainly trying not to go over 180-age limit (that would be about 150 bpm) currently at that level I can run at 8 min/mile pace. My plan is to run with a heart monitor and not increase 150 bpm on the race. Does this makes sense? I feel that with proper fueling I should be able to make it. I'll try to eat all I can during race, about 300 calories per hour if my stomach can handle that amount of gels. Brian says: The reason I write you is I have a friend that is 23 years old and has just been diagnosed with a rare (for his young age) adeno carcinoma of the duodenum. He is going to have a short regiment of chemo before a very complex surgery to remove the mass that is about the size of two grapefruits. My question to you is, what are your thoughts on anything he can do nutritionally through food or supplementation that will give his body the support and healing power it needs. I realize you are not a medical Dr. but respect your knowledge in the nutrition realm more than most medical Dr.s :) Trevor says: I am concerned triathlete. I have ambitions bigger then what my dreams can handle but it is unfortunate that I have had my dreams squashed again. I was watching the news and saw yet another rider hit by a car from behind. I wonder, in your experience, how does the community we are a part of deal with this? I am love the sport and it has saved my life in many ways but I am worried that my obsession of being active is now becoming a threat to my life. It really sucks to see people get hit by cars and then mentally be off your game due to the vivid images of past accidents. I have been training for about two years and the first day I got on bike, a bike rider got killed in front of me. I just wanted to hear if you had anything on this. ~ In my response, I recommend the book Eyes Wide Open. Lia asks: I have signed up for my first ever event - a Tough Mudder, the inaugural Mudder in Vegas. I looked through archives on the site and didn't see any recommendations on how to train for an event like this. I have quite a bit of time because the event is not until October 6. The suggestion on the Tough Mudder website is pretty slim, and I'd love to hear what your approach would be. ~ In my response about the Tough Mudder, I reference this workout. Joe asks: I am 53 years old. In Triathlon for about 12 years (Sprint to IM). I have asked this question to many and I just get a shoulder shrug. When I started Tris, I couldn't swim, I had never biked, but was a good high school runner. I could run 51 secs for the 400m. My problem is I cant run. I can put in a solid swim and good bike but my run is poor. Stand alone times for a 1500m swim would be 25minutes for a 40km bike 65 min and for a 10km run 48 min. (non tris) I have done intervals, LT runs, hills etc, I have read all the books and have tried everything I even bought power cranks and stand alone run blocks. Why can't I run? Josh says: In a recent podcast you mentioned natural testosterone enhancement using D-aspartic acid with an aromatase inhibitor. Could you please speak a little more in depth on this subject? Including sources, dosing, detrimental effects, and whether you cycle on and off. ~ In my response to Josh, I recommend Hard Rhino D-Aspartic Acid and Myomin aromatase inhibitor. Diane asks: I'm a 53 year-old woman (120 lbs., 5 ft. 6 in. tall) and am doing an Ironman for the first time this summer. I've done two 70.3 triathlons (about 7 hours to complete), one in 2011 and one in 2010, and some sprint and Olympic distances. By my calculations I will be lucky if I finish the IM in the 17 hours, mostly because it's a hilly course (Mt. Tremblant). My question is about nutrition during the event (although I have many more questions). I anticipate taking 2 hours for the swim and I've read that it might be wise to take a gel at the half-way point during the swim. Do you think that's necessary? Because I'll be on the course for so long how should I manage my nutrition intake? Because I'm slow and working at a lower intensity should my total nutrition intake be the same as someone my size who finishes in 12 hours? Any information that you could provide in how many calories/carbs to take during a 17 hour event would be appreciated. ~ In my response to Diane, I mention these amino acids. So...maybe marathon doesn't suppress immune system...just allergies? Before you take this as reason to begin “grazing”, notice that it is 3 meals & 2 snacks, not “6-10 a day”. ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&As: Audio Question from Patrick: Does long cardio really burn off muscle? In my response to Patrick, I mention these amino acids. ------------------------- Erling Tenvik asks: The winter is coming, and i was wondering if its bad to do hard outdoor training in cold temperatures (for the lungs). Last year in Oslo (Norway) it was -20 for a long period. I like the new structure of the podcast :) In my response to Erling, I reference this podcast with Ray Cronise and Tim Ferris. Brock also mentioned "wind proof undies". ------------------------- Andrei asks: Hi Ben, I heard you a few times talking about soaked and sprouted grains. So what is the proper way to do it? How do you sprout grains, quinoa, etc? Thank you! In my response to Andrei, I reference a multi-part video on soaking and sprouting that Jessa Greenfield presented inside the Ben Greenfield Fitness Inner Circle at www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/innercircle and also the cookbook Nourishing Traditions ------------------------- Ron asks: What do you think of Dr. Weil's food pyramid? ------------------------- David Asks: Ben, I'm a triathlete and focus on the 70.3 distance and moving to a full next season. I want to lean up, get stronger and be in a solid position for next season. I eat ok but there is a lot of room for improvement in my diet. Which would allow me to drop my body fat but still allow muscle mass growth over the off season and keep that muscle mass as I start racing next season. What diet would you recommend? Start with low carb diet and then convert over to Rev Diet (http://www.revdiet.com) ? Other suggestions? Keep up the Podcasts! Thanks David ------------------------- Questions from Jim and Dan about antibiotics: Jim asks: Ben, I know you recently went through having to use antibiotics for an infection. I have to take cipro soon for an intestinal infection. Heard it was nasty and you cant train because it affects your tendons and ligaments (especially your Achilles tendon) would you know how long I should wait before resuming training? ...and Dan asks... Hey Ben, I was wondering if you have any knowledge on Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Avelox, Cipro, Levaquin, Floxin, etc), and the damage they can cause. In April 2011 I had a sinus infection, I was prescribed Avelox, and right away I started having knee pain while running and biking. It got worse and worse, and in June I could barely walk w/o pain. I went to a Doctor and had blood tests done, and was told I was completely fine. My Nutritionist felt it was Leaky Gut and I changed my diet accordingly and felt better.... But over the course of the summer I have experienced many issues ranging from muscle spasms, itchy skin, rashes (especially after swimming in chlorinated pools and eating certain foods), muscle aches, tightness in tendons/muscles, depression (obviously), no energy, the list goes on. I have talked to a Rheumatologist and a Naturopath and both agree that I have Leaky Gut, but they were not aware of damages from the Fluoroquinolones. The Rheumatologist prescribed me a strong NSAID so I can workout, yet that would bother my Leaky Gut even further and I have no intention of taking it. So far doing a mix of the Paleo Diet and the Candida Diet is helping... When I rest up and feel better, I try to do a light workout and then get knocked right back down, with pains later that day. It takes me three times longer to recover after the easiest of workouts. Can you give me any advice or direction? I feel as if I went from a super healthy and fit 35 year who was into Triathlons, to someone that can barely move without worrying about snapping something. In my response I reference this article I wrote on How To Limit The Damage Caused by Antibiotics. ------------------------------------------ Kai asks: The three most discussed options to the Standard American Diet are Vegan, Zone, and Low Carb. Have any studies been done which objectively compare the health benefits of these three intake approaches? With your recent release of the low carb diet for triathletes, what is your opinion on the Zone diet? In my response, I mention http://www.lowcarbtriathlete.com ------------------------- John asks: I am preparing for a mountain climbing expedition this Spring. Expedition climbing differs from other endurance sports, such as triathlons, in a number of ways: - An expedition may last two months or more. - The summit day may last 12 hours or more with only short rest breaks. - The aerobic system is taxed by high altitude. Average intensity is less than race type sports, but peak intensity is just as high. You need good full-body strength to carry a heavy backpack while performing climbing moves (balance and flexibility). How would you train for this? What specific workouts would you do? Thanks for your help. In my response to John, I reference http://www.youtube.com/bengreenfieldfitness and high knee step-ups, single leg squats, hip hikes, lateral leg raises, torso twists, woodchoppers, running man row, and standing row. ------------------------- Jens asks: I learned about Super Compensation decades ago and that certain muscles need appr. 48 hours to get into the supercomensation "state". To be honest, I never felt that it worked or that it didn't. I just did it. Does this principle still matter? And if so, how would one figure these cycles out? For runners, who run every day, does this principle work or is the type of exercise different? How do trainers like you figure out how often one specific person has to put a load on their body to get the best results? Or is supercompensation just a thing for body builders? Kind regards, Jens (Germany) In my response to Jens, I reference my interview with guys from Restwise as well as Tudor Boompa's book "Periodization for Sport". ------------------------- Kathy asks: Thanks for all the great info you put out. Can you talk a bit more about multivitamins? I remember someone asking you about taking inexpensive multis, and you talked about the differences in low and high quality. But do you think taking a good multivitamin is good 'insurance,' even for someone who eats soundly, including lots of different vegetables? I was wondering what you think about this particular multi, New Chapter. It's quite expensive and 'low-dose.' Their theory is that their vitamins are 'cultured' and therefore absorbed much more effectively. Thanks again. Both my husband and I love your podcast and site. -Kathy In my response to Kathy, I reference Peter Gillham liquid multi-vitamins. ------------------------- Brandon asks: Ben, I was wondering how quickly can cortisol and/or water cause major fluctuations in weight gain? Could these factors cause gains that would indicate significant over-consumption of calories? Or do the calories play the primary role in the weight gain that these factors make more apparent? Over thanksgiving break (during which I was away from my college's weight room/ cardio machines) I saw a decrease in weight (around 7 pounds compared to normal weight in 5 days) despite only doing fat burning cardio and a couple workout that weren't as demanding as usual. I did some calorie restriction and tried to keep my body burning fat during those days. Now that I am back to my usual schedule (and have done a week straight of workouts) my weight has increased to about 5 to 7 pounds over my normal weight. I'm using the same scale at the same time of day and know that muscle gain is contributing some what but it looks like I've gained a more abdominal fat than someone with my exercise regimen and clean diet should. I really don't think I'm eating to excess unless I cannot trust my mind to tell me when I'm full. I've never been stuffed after a meal and hope that I don't have to feel like I'm starving myself to keep me from gaining fat at the same rate as muscle. ------------------------- Listeners Steve and Petra ask about leg workouts: Steve asks: What are the best weight lifting / resistance training exercises for the legs for distance runners ? I typically get a lower leg or hip injury 2 or 3 times a year running and I believe it is from doing little resistance training for my legs. ...and Petra asks: Hey Ben! Thanks sooo much for all you put out here for everyone! I have learned so much just from listening to your podcasts and articles you post on here, it truly is fabulous. I have ran my entire life or since I could join track. I mainly do long distance races and have completed 3 marathons and just ran a half marathon. Now my goal is to qualify for Boston, like every other competitive runner :) I was never a bad runner but not elite either. The problem that I think is holding me back in running is I have always struggled with developing muscle tone. I am lean but I don't look like a lean/ripped runner, my upper body is more toned than my lower half but could still use some help. When I have done strengthening exercises I seem to get bulky or put the muscle under the fat and gain weight either way. I just give up and end up just doing my interval track workouts, tempo runs and a long run each week because it keeps me the leanest. I honestly think that if I could figure out how to lean up a bit more I would be able to be a much, much better runner than I am now. I am just unsure of how to combine, running, strength and nutrition all together! There is so much information out there I don't know what to do anymore and just want a lean, runner body without becoming anemic! Any words of wisdom? Thanks! Petra In my response to Steve and Petra, I also mention http://www.tri-ripped.com as well as my new book on Weight Training For Triathletes (see links in Special Announcements section). ------------------------- Nadine's Question: On your website, you have a link that deals with preventing your computer "from sabotaging your health". The link talks briefly about EMR (electro magnetic radiation) and its effects. There has been some research about the effects of wireless as well (see JAMA Feb 23, 2011) on the blood-brain barrier. Also toxicologist Devra Davis has written a new book called "Disconnect" that deals with some of the health effects of wireless. What do you think about athletes using heart rate monitors and power meters that pulse in the wireless range (e.g. 2.4 GHz)? ------------------------------------------ Testimonial from Christian: I finished my first ironman 2 weeks ago at ironman Florida - I couldn't have done it without your Triathlon Dominator plan. 2 more weeks of recovery and then training starts for IM Florida 2012. Goal for next year is sub 11 hours! Thanks, Christian ------------------------------------------ Closing music from "Table Set for One" by Brock Skywalker. First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code)   --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ====================================== Patrick asks via Twitter @bengreenfield : I know you're not the biggest fan of breakfast cereals, but what's your take on Kellog's new offering Fiber Plus AO? Joe asks: 1) What are your thoughts about taking a carb blocker?; 2) You recommend getting a juicer - I heard that juicers weren't really that good for you. Chelsea asks: I'm a runner, and I want to do squats to build strength and prevent injury. The problem is that my flexibility is so bad that I can't get into a full squat. Even without weight, if I try to squat all the way down I either have to go up on my toes or use something for balance or I'll fall over. I know I need to work on flexibility in general, but do you have any tips for working on getting from wussy 1/2 way squats to being able to do a full squat? Even if it isn't necessary to get the full benefit of the squatting exercise, being able to do a full squat looks more impressive. Kyle asks: Have you ever heard of the moomiyo supplement? If so, or after some research, what are your opinions on it for use by an endurance athlete? Amy asks: Hi Ben, I have a question for you about the Monster Lo-Carb energy drink. This topic was discussed in a forum on the Runner's World site and the overall message I got is that they aren't that bad, in moderation, that is. The sugar is rather low, at 3g (total 6g, since it is 2 servings) and there are 20 total calories. From that look at it, the Monster Lo-Carb doesn't seem so bad… but is there something hiding from me (I am not a master of nutritional labels)? In my response to Amy, I mention delta-E energy drink. Ernesto asks: 1) My high school cross country coach would preach to us that we don't look behind us during a race as this shaves seconds off our time. Can you verify this? 2) also, he would tell us that drinking any carbonated drink would cause us to get stitches and slow us down during practice. I found this to be true for myself. Is this the case or is it all in my head? 3) and lastly, you may or may not have heard of steve magness, the author of the website the science of running. In it, he wrote an article that running 4.5 miles twice in a day is better than 9 miles all at once and can lead to greater fitness gains. Can you back this up? Jennifer asks: The only foods I am allowed to eat are the 'simple' carbs. I have a permanent small bowel obstruction and have to remain on a low fiber/low residue diet for the rest of my life. This includes white bread, white rice, white potatoes, white meat, white pasta, etc. Absolutely no fruits and vegetables, cooked or raw, no whole grains of any kind, no nuts or seeds, etc. I can't even eat applesauce! I'm at my wits end about what to do. I've seen nutritionists and they quite frankly don't know what to do with me because they don't believe that I cannot eat anything that would be considered healthy. Everything I eat is going to make me gain so much weight. I also cannot exercise in the way that I would like. I've had so many surgeries, all of my abdominal organs are glued together with adhesions. I have to stay away from anything involving my core. I'm sure there's a way around this but I have not been able to find the help that I need to get started. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Marco asks: What can i feed my dad? He had a brain stroke and is in bed all day. I read that the brain is capable to heal itself, but do you recommend any supplements for his brain? Sam asks: Just got a type 3 separated shoulder in a bike crash. No surgery right now, but doctors will reassess in 6 weeks. Doctors advised to start rehab exercises as soon as pain subsides. Your advice on the best exercises? David Venables asks: For the Marathon de Sables, I need to be self sufficient (except for water) for 7 days whilst running between 150 - 160 miles in the Sahara dessert. The shortest day is half marathon distance, whilst the longest day is 50 miles. Light weight, calorie and nutrient rich food will therefore be essential for keeping me fueled. Do you have any recommendations? In my response to David, I recommend the LivingFuel SuperGreens supplement.Pamela asks: What you do think about the athleticgreens from Tim Ferris's book? Also, do you feel that this supplement would affect people with hashimoto's (hypothryroidism) or have an interaction with synthroid? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! *In this episode, I take you through my new book, Two Meals a Day , chapter by chapter, to learn how to live healthily through a simple but sustainable strategy that works for everyone.* You’ll learn about how *your body actually operates best in a fasted state* , and that people eat too much of the wrong foods, and too often, as well as what the “wrong” foods are. You’ll also find out why *snacking is a destructive habit* , why eating less often will help you develop *metabolic flexibility* , and the benefits of eating intuitively instead of following a strict, three meals a day structure. You’ll also learn about what leads to *dysfunctional fat burning* and the *power of “turnaround statements”* , which can be applied to great effect to every area of your life, why “faking it till you make it” has real effects on your physiology, and how to implement winning mindset and behavioral patterns that *align with your goals.* Whether you’re Paleo, carnivore, keto, or prefer to j ust eat intuitively and not put a label on it, you can benefit greatly from eating two meals a day, because this strategy is truly one that works for everyone, and also strengthens your ability to make empowering and conscious choices for yourself. *TIMESTAMPS:* Carbohydrate dependency is quite likely the number one public health problem today. [00:53] If you want to achieve optimum health, body composition, and longevity, ditch modern processed foods and eat less frequently. Develop metabolic flexibility. [01:46] We aren’t telling you what to eat but we ask that you ditch the big three toxic modern foods, stop the habit of snacking. [03:12] When you are doing a dietary transition, you should not have to suffer and be in pain. [04:52] Your body works most optimally in a fasted state. [07:55] Clean up your act. [08:40] Emphasize nutrient dense ancestral foods. [13:23] Intermittent eating is the fastest way to health. You have to do it right. [19:23] If you are not getting enough sleep or having stressful workouts, it will be more difficult to transition into this new dietary regimen. [23:52] Implement a winning mindset. Look at your own self-limiting beliefs. [29:09] Follow the fat-burning lifestyle. Start with good sleep habits. [35:23] Discipline your use of technology.  Move more. [41:09] Micro workouts are always beneficial. No pain, no gain is not the way to go. [43:21] How does the two meals a day work? Follow your intuition. [47:23] Chapter 7 of this book has a chapter called Advanced Strategies for Fat Reduction. [48:59] Therapeutic cold exposure helps stimulate fat reduction and brings psychological benefits.  [55:40] The 12-day Turbocharge is at the end of the book with action assignments in food, fasting, fitness, mindset, and lifestyle.
