Emily's book, A Wilder Eden: How to Keep Dreaming in a World of Disappointments, is based on the concept of the Garden of Eden and how it contrasts with the broken world we live in full of disappointments. Emily talks about how people have gone through hard things such as the pandemic, divorce, infertility, infidelity, business failure, and not being able to buy a house. The book is about continuing to own and co-create our story without becoming a victim of what is happening. Leah and Diamond are two humans who no longer support the inhuman, oligarchic empire model destroying our planet and our true nature as human beings. As activists we decided to do something about it, so we opted out of our former lives to begin anew. We are currently transforming pristine alpine wilderness into a self-sustaining homestead and organic farm in preparation for the upcoming collapse. We plan on developing and executing every single step of the process in open source format for the benefit of all humanity. With our backgrounds in academia and the sciences (climatology, geology, physics, biology, chemistry, and more) we hope to uncover the lies perpetrated by the mass media. How can perseverance and self-sustainability help overcome the biggest obstacles in a business? It is what Blake Murray, Founder & CEO at Divvy, shared with us on this week's episode.Blake talked about how he bounced around different career opportunities before ultimately cutting his teeth in the tech community and eventually launching his own company, Divvy, one of the fastest-growing financial technology companies in the country. He let us in on Divvy's early beginnings, what exactly led the company to where it is today, and its future once the acquisition is complete. Finally, Blake touched on perseverance when faced with a setback in your business and the importance of self-sustainability during difficult times. Listen and learn how these traits kept Divvy from survivability to thriving, where they became one of the fastest-growing companies in the entire United States through the pandemic.Episode Quotes:On going through different career paths:"When you sit down with people that have figured out how to build successful careers, the meandering path is by and large what you encounter. It's very rare that it's linear, that it's what you expected it to be. It's more of, how do I find opportunities, learn what I don't like, and then learn what I'm good at, and build from there and grow from there?"How to have an impact on what you choose to do:"I am a firm believer that if you're going to have an impact on everything, you have to throw yourself, dedicating time, energy, capital. It doesn't even have to be a material amount of capital."On having self-confidence when faced with problems:"I've had almost an irrational belief in myself or confidence that I can solve problems, like come hell or high water. When confronted with a problem, I'm going to find a way to figure it out no matter what."His take on perseverance:"So, perseverance means, to me, again, no one is coming; it's up to us, looking inward, having incredible confidence that you have the talents, the faculties, and the skills, to solve whatever you're up against, and just continuing to work and continuing to grind. And knowing that good fruits will come from that. It may not be the outcome that you expected, but good fruits will come from that."On taking control of your future:"I found that if you ask for what you need and what you want, you will be blown away at what people are willing to give you. And if you don't ask for it, you cannot be surprised when it's not given to you." Show Links:LinkedIn ProfileDivvyOn the acquisition

I'm very pleased to welcome Wibbs Coulson of Mandukya Yoga back on the podcast. This time we are talking about breathing, and how you've probably been breathing wrong your entire life! I occasionally feature episodes on what I call the 'sustainability of self' - I see it again and again, that professionals in the sustainability profession burn out. When you see the need to fix the problem as so crucial that the human race depends on it... you tend to forget about your own needs. So with this in mind, I wanted to look at how we are breathing, how we can be doing it so much better and what benefits that will have to our health. This episode came from a bout of anxiety I experienced at the end of 2020 and start of 2021. Anxiety is a relatively common thing in the UK, in 2013, there were 8.2 million cases of anxiety disorder recorded. I had heard that breath could help, so I got together with Wibbs to see what his work in that area could teach us. What do entrepreneurs and comedians have in common? Turns out a lot. From having a strategic mindset to having the determination to keep going, there are so many useful parallels between business and comedy that can benefit entrepreneurs. In my keynote speeches, I often talk about how comedians know how to carve out their niche and attract their ideal audience. Sound familiar? Today, I talk with Peter McGraw who happens to be an expert on the cross innovation between business and comedy. He introduces us to concepts like architecting a reversal, liminal space, and constraints. There are so many things that good comedians do that entrepreneurs can benefit from. We break it all down in this eye opening episode along with examples and explanations that bring it all home. Peter McGraw is a behavioral economist who teaches MBAs. He's a professor of marketing and psychology, and he teaches graduate classes in behavioral economics. He also speaks at Fortune 500 companies and universities around the world. He's also the founder of the Humor Research Lab (adk HuRL) where he studies some of the world's funniest people and translates that knowledge into success tactics for business people and entrepreneurs. He is the author of The Humor Code: A Global Search for What Makes Things Funny and his new book Shtick to Business: What the Masters of Comedy Can Teach You about Breaking Rules, Being Fearless, and Building a Serious Career. His background in business and comedy makes him the perfect person to share how knowing how to make great comedy can lead to the ability to make a great business. Highlights - [02:36] Peter gives us a glimpse into his new secret project which is his new podcast Solo: The Single Person's Guide to a Remarkable Life. [03:57] Fusing business and comedy was a natural fit for Peter with his background in business and his study of comedy. [05:09] Peter shares how it's not about being funny. It's about thinking funny. It's about thinking creatively and innovatively. [07:26] Parallels between being successful in business and comedy is having a strategy mindset and grinding out the work. [09:16] Architecting a reversal or finding your unique perspective. Producing an opposing perspective is a great way to get a laugh and reverse the status quo. [12:03] Peter shares an example of this using Tony Horton and P90X. Getting in shape isn't easy. It's insanely difficult. [13:50] Another example of a reversal is creating a dumb phone as opposed to a smart phone. Thinking in reverse can reveal new opportunities. [15:48] Liminal space is when we transition or move from one space to another. It can also be psychological from one identity to another. Comics constantly live in a liminal world. This creates an opportunity to see the world in new ways. [17:30] Entrepreneurs are often in a liminal space when it comes to personal development and growth. [19:39] Having good health is foundational to succeeding. [21:14] Comedians have an amazing ability to observe. [23:32] If we don't capture and write down our insights, we often lose them. A notepad not a microphone is a comic's most important tool. [27:45] Constraints and how comedians deal with them and what we can learn. Creativity is finding an original and appropriate solution to a problem. Constraints force us to think harder, think differently, and work harder. [31:14] Peter shares the lesson of hot tea and ice tea. Trying to make everyone happy makes no one happy. Comics care about making their audience laugh. [34:17] Taking an improv class is some of the best training you can receive in business. You learn listening and creating comedy out of nothing. [37:40] The key to listening in business is listening to the last thing said. [41:00] Sometimes the thing we focus the least on gives us the greatest reward. Are we focusing on solving our customer's problems? [44:13] Busting up the myth of the lone genius. It's usually a team of people that create innovations. Most successful comics have great writers. Group genius is a result in comedy and business. [49:45] Peter shares his answers to the rabid round of SELF Sustainability, Elevate, Let's go, and Facing a challenge. How can we do the work to look after the planet if we don't look after ourselves? Many in our industry burn out, because they are so focussed on doing the much needed work in advancing sustainability in the built environment that don't stop to notice whether they have sustainability within themselves. I know this from personal experience and have observed in in many of my colleagues. This episode I'm talking to Faye Blake from 'Live Intuitively' about how Ayurveda teaches us to nurture and nourish ourselves. This then gives us the basis to then help others. "Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance in one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and the use of herbs. Knowledge of Ayurveda enables one to understand how to create this balance of body, mind and consciousness according to one’s own individual constitution and how to make lifestyle changes to bring about and maintain this balance." Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. Our April issue features some local environmental heroes. We share five stories of Tulsans working to make a positive difference. Among those is Nathan Pickard, and his wife Kristin, who have been hard at work creating The Joinery. It’s a regenerative building located in the Heights, just north of downtown. It’s the first building in the state to seek the Living Building Challenge certification from the International Living Future Institute. There are only two dozen fully-certified living buildings in the world. To achieve that status, the Pickards and team, led architect Molly Jones, have to meet 20 stringent requirements to reach their goal. That includes things like solar power, an independent water source, a garden and much more. It turns out, a pandemic creates a good test of the building’s purpose in providing basic needs in a time of crisis. Some call the Pickards doomsday preppers and others call them hippies. In a conversation we did by phone, Nathan discusses where they fall on the spectrum and how he’s excited about the massive amount of sweet potatoes they have stocked up from their garden. He also reflects on what led he and his friends to start the project and how he hopes it catches on their neighborhood. We also discuss his involvement with Up With Trees, which includes creating the Tisdale Food Forest along the LL Tisdale Parkway that provides the community with fruits and nuts, while also serving as a natural sound barrier for the neighborhood. In a time when we’re re-examining how we operate in our daily lives, this conversation provides insight on how we can work with our natural resources to be better prepared in challenging times like the one we find ourselves in during the COVID-19 pandemic.Following that conversation, I’m sharing my interview with Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma’s new CEO Lori Long. When we talked by phone late last week, she was just 10 days into the job. It’s an unprecedented time for the food bank. They provide food to folks in 24 counties. It used to be about 463,000 meals a week. As of last week, they were up to about 750,000 meals a week and that number is going up as unemployment rises. The nonprofit is low on inventory with corporate food drives ending as people are forced to work from home. There’s a growing budget deficit as they purchase food and expand operations, while losing out on the opportunity for traditional fundraising. But according to Lori, the staff of nearly 80 continues to have good spirits as they work hard to ensure Oklahomans have food to feed themselves and their families in these challenging days. You can visit OKFoodbank.org to learn how to get assistance or provide help as they continue to work hard to meet the growing needs. This is Tulsa Talks with Nathan Pickard and Lori Long.

During the week of Self Love Day Feb 13th I taped the 3rd of our 3 part series on Powerful Questions to ask ourselves as we make choices for the year ahead ... so we can stay centered, calm and clear in these intense times. This final episode poses an inquiry that will take you into the heart of what YOU need to be sustained - physically, mentally, emotionally and materially ... a question that if we don't pause to consider we inevitably will end up stretching ourselves way too thin, giving too much, without receiving what we need. The word sustained is a powerful word I invite you to take into your heart and life ... the root means 'to hold'... when you are SUSTAINED, you feel HELD... so you are so much more able to actualize your dreams, desires, projects, purpose ... when you are SUSTAINED, the strong foundation under and around and within you fuels the courage you need to stay clear and centered. When are not SUSTAINED ... not receiving the financial flow you need... not having the home you need... not having the supportive relationships you need... when you feel you are giving so much more than you are receiving in return... your body, mind and heart get wobbly, tired, exhausted and eventually burned out or sick. SO LETS NOT DO THIS YEAR in a way you sacrifice yourself. The invitation from my heart to yours is to take radical acts of SELF SUSTAINABILITY... as you make choices in your career, relationships, money, health, consider and get real about what you need to be sustained. I think the answers will enlighten and embrace you. In this episode of Feminine Power Time: SUSTAINED: What do you need to be sustained this year? i, Christine Arylo will Share what SUSTAINABILITY for YOURSELF actually looks like. This is so beyond self care. And take you through a series of questions that will help open up your clarity about what you need this coming year to be sustained - in all four realms. Tune in Self Love Day Blessings - whenever you are tuning in, remember that taking a stand for your self sustainability it better for everyone and everything. It is way too easy to overgive and overcompensate in our work and relationships and then get overwhelmed and distracted, and diminish our impact, and worse, deplete ourselves. Especially in these intense and changing times. Which is why we are doing this series in Feminine Power Time on powerful inquiries to ask yourself for 2020 beyond, so you can stay centered, calm and clear... focused on what matters. This specific inquiry is at the root of feminine leadership - it's all about taking a stand for your self-sustainability and for giving and receiving in harmony in our work and relationships. It's also about feminine power and making a greater impact in your work and within the lives of those you love and lead. When you know your part in your work you not only become more effective, you affect greater, lasting change. When you know your part in your relationships, you stop over giving and feeling like you have to do it all or you are failing at doing it all. You embrace that you are one person in a constellation of people and support that collectively cares for others. WOW the spaciousness and lack of guilt that happens when you really embrace this. This is also about purpose - when you can name your part to play in this bigger world, you too stop feeling like you are not enough or not doing enough because you see how you are making a difference in what is yours to do. #StayFocusedOnYourPart - that's the self-sustainability stand. As leaders, we apply this stand to three realms of our lives - our work, our relationships and our physical foundation of health/wealth/home In this session, I'll share more about what staying focused on your part means - and how it's essential to doing meaningful work, growing your work or business, not taking on too much, and gaining the power to say NO I can't without guilt why we have such a hard time not taking it all on whether it's at work or in our relationships how to get an upgrade in who you work for so you can stop feeling so pressured and start receiving the support you need... and trust that others will too honing in on your super powers so you can get clear on your part in the world, in your work and in your relationships. At the end of the session, I'll walk you through a personal meditation and visualization to help you get clear on what your part is and what you part is not in the 3 realms of your whole life .... and then take a stand to stay focused on your part this year This is preventative burnout and overwhelm care. It's self empowerment. It's feminine leadership. It's wise. I look forward to diving in with you! If you missed Powerful Inquiry #1 - What is Holding Me? from last episode, make sure to tune in. And stay tuned next week for #3 inquiry. big heart Christine ****** Mark Your Calendars - Save the Date - and Upcoming Programs Self Love Day Circle - Feb 13th - Beyond Self Care: Taking a Stand for Self Sustainability A Year of Self Love - Embodying Self Love - Opens Feb 13th. Miss Paula of KDCL Media and Dia Nunez of The H20 Network welcome Crystal Skull Explorers Joshua Shapiro and Katrina Head to After Dark. Joshua has been involved with the crystal skulls since 1983 when he saw one made out of amethyst in northern California (“Ami”). He felt a strong connection with this artifact and since that time has devoted his life and resources to sharing the best information he can about these crystalline artifacts and the future role they will play to help our planet see world peace. Katrina’s first contact with the crystal skulls happened in 2008 when she was gifted a small rose quartz crystal skull from a close friend. At this time in her life she was expanding quickly into her life purpose. The synchronicity of receiving this small crystal skull was a catalyst to bring back her memory of who she truly is and her agreement in this lifetime and her life purpose as she would be working with the Crystal Skulls again for global peace. The next international online conference: Crystal Skulls into 2013 and Beyond: Take I: Europe, will be held March 9th and 10 from 8am to Noon est with four speakers scheduled each day.
