Do you often feel exhausted, resentful, or underappreciated in your relationships? In this episode, Gabe Howard and licensed psychotherapist Terri Cole explore the complexities of codependency, including its less-talked-about form: “high functioning codependency.” Terri shares practical tools like the “resentment inventory” to identify unhealthy relational patterns and explains how overgiving can be an unconscious attempt to control chaos. You'll also learn how societal pressures, especially on women, play a role in this dynamic and how setting boundaries can lead to healthier, more fulfilling connections. Whether you're managing relationships with friends, family, or colleagues, this episode will help you understand the line between healthy care and codependent behaviors. If you're tired of saying yes when you want to say no or struggling to let others help you, this is a must-listen conversation. “I coined the phrase high functioning codependency because my clients were these highly capable women, in particular, who did not identify with sort of the old school, Melody Beattie, “Codependent No More,” it's enabling an addict. That's all it is, basically. They're like dependent? I'm not dependent on squat. Everyone's dependent on me. I'm making all the money. I'm making all the decisions. I'm kind of the boss around here, so I can't be codependent, which is not true.” ~Terri Cole To learn more -- or read the transcript -- visit the official episode page. Friends, I have discovered…I am a flag flying, High Functioning Codependant. Or rather, I have been living as one. And I'm more than ready to be done. HFC is a new term and a new look at codependency, the concept and term is coined by renowned psychotherapist, Terri Cole, who I have with me in this episode. I believe this discussion will hit many of you, as it did me, who have been living the life of overdoing it. Doing too much. With a good heart and even strong threads from religious backgrounds that ingrained in us the idea of valiantly striving to selflessly give and serve until there is nothing left of you. I bought into it as a kid and lived the life of a hero until I finally hit burnout and bitterness. I've been working to crawl out and then Terri comes along with a new message and book, Too Much: A Guide To Breaking The Cycle of High-Functioning Codependency. We get deep and very personal here, and see evidence of HFC in so, so many people I know and respect. And I see it slowly eroding their peace. This is my story as well. What an episode we have for you today, listeners. Today on the show we have the phenomenal Terri Cole, whose work about boundaries I have so resonated with in the past. She has a new book out on October 15 called Too Much: A Guide to Breaking the Cycle of High-Functioning Codependency, and it examines what we thought we knew about codependency. We have had the godmother of codependency, Melody Beattie, on the show, and Melody introduced the concept to the world. Now, in Too Much, Terri is taking the concept to the next level, introducing us to high-functioning codependency. In today's conversation we define what high-functioning codependency, or HFC, is, what it looks like, some common behaviors exhibited by those who have it, and how those with HFC got to this place. You also might have heard this called “overfunctioning.” You'll hear me say this many times throughout this episode, but I identify as a recovering HFC, and Terri writes that these behaviors are “highly programmed and largely unconscious.” Terri, too, is a recovering HFC, and writes in Too Much that “prioritizing the wants, needs, and outcomes of others over my own well-being was my default setting.” She talks about the moment she knew she couldn't go on this way, and the book is a deeply personal one to her. We also talk about how we draw the line from being caring and a high-functioning codependent — and when we know, as the book's title suggests, that it's too much. By the way, when it comes to romantic relationships, codependents are attracted to narcissists, and the reverse is true, as well. The book talks about how we can prevent this deeply unhealthy combination. In our conversation today, we talk about the cost to a life if one doesn't address their high-functioning codependency, and how the key to getting to the other side is boundaries. Now, Terri is an expert in boundaries; her book prior to Too Much, which I also highly recommend, is called Boundary Boss: The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen, and (Finally) Live Free. I do think it's important to note that reversing high-functioning codependency is absolutely possible, but it isn't a linear path or a straight line, and that those working through this should expect setbacks. You know what? People could probably live their whole lives with high-functioning codependency, but because of Terri's book, they won't want to, and they don't have to. Terri Cole, MSW, LCSW, is a licensed psychotherapist and global relationship and empowerment expert and has been doing this work for over 25 years. She is the host of a podcast I love, “The Terri Cole Show,” and inspires over 600,000 people weekly. She has a deep gift for making complex psychological concepts actionable and accessible so that clients achieve sustainable change. This conversation with Terri meant a lot to me, and I bet it will to you, too. Take a listen. Ever wonder why some people who seem highly capable and successful still struggle with people-pleasing and relationship dynamics? This episode features a powerful conversation with psychotherapist Terri Cole where we unravel the hidden patterns of high-functioning codependency — a form of codependency that often goes unrecognized, especially in high-achievers. We explore how to identify these patterns, shift out of autopilot advice giving, and build authentic connections through healthier boundaries. Packed with relatable insights and real life examples, this episode is a must listen for anyone seeking to reclaim their energy, set empowered boundaries, and transform their relationships. This is part one on a series about boundaries. I've spent most of my life with zero boundaries, thinking I was doing the world and everyone in it a favor. Instead, I found myself serving others…with a bitter heart. Or just a worn out heart. To the point where some of those closest with me told me to just go take care of myself, so that…I could take care of them better. But I still grapple with the concept a lot and I need more help. I bet you do too. So, I invited Terri Cole to the show is a licensed psychotherapist, global relationship and empowerment expert, and the author of a new book, Boundary Boss-The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen and (Finally) Live Free. The message in her book is the muse for our show together here. Terri reaches over 450,000 people weekly through her blog, social media platform, and her popular podcast, The Terri Cole Show. Meet Terri Cole Terri Cole is a licensed psychotherapist, global relationship and empowerment expert, and the author of Boundary Boss-The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen, and (Finally) Live Free. For over two decades, Terri has worked with many clients, including stay-at-home moms, celebrities, and Fortune 500 CEOs. She has a gift for making complex psychological concepts accessible and actionable so that clients and students achieve sustainable change. She inspires over 450,000 people weekly through her blog, social media platform, signature courses, and her popular podcast, The Terri Cole Show. Terri started out as head of a successful talent agency working with celebrities and high-profile leaders, yet felt something was missing. She kept seeking to feel happy and content but never quite landed there. Instead, Terri decided to pursue a new career by returning to school to become a psychotherapist. She realized that she was going through life not realizing how crucial boundaries are for a fulfilling life that works or that she was a 'high functioning co-dependent'. We unpacked both of these, how they're intertwined, and shared why you need to get yourself on the boundary bus and how you might also be a high-functioning co-dependent needing a tune-up. Tune in to learn more! What Are Real Boundaries First off, let's agree to put away any judgment or shame here. I've personally struggled in my own life with setting boundaries and high-functioning co-dependency, and the first step is always awareness. We'll shine the light here on what you might be doing that's hurting your happiness so you can become more aware. Terri defines boundaries as 'your own rules of engagement where you know what's ok and not ok for you. You are clear on your preferences, limits, and deal breakers and communicate them transparently with others. To be masterful and setting and keep boundaries, you've got to be cognizant of what they are, how to make sure others know them, and courageous enough to say something when and if they are broken. Most of us are indoctrinated to be 'good girls' and to be self-abandoning co-dependents, especially when it comes to boundaries. There are all kinds of reasons we're not fluent in boundaries. What matters is to learn how to stop self-abandonment. Terri shared it like this -- 'I am the storm, and my life is the boat.' Can you relate to any of this? I know I can! A New Kind of Co-Dependent Being co-dependent means being overly invested in the feeling state, outcomes, and situations of people in our life to the detriment of our own well-being (and on all levels) and not feeling we can ask for what we want. It is actually a form of control and typically affects the over-doers, over-achievers, and over-feelers. Many of us are what Terri calls High Functioning Co-dependents, meaning we're doing well in life, achieving our goals, and seeming to succeed. However, if you feel put upon, burned out, and resentful often, you probably are also an HFC. The good news is you can change, starting with awareness and forgiveness of yourself. There are things you can do to change this habit patterning that can affect your mindset, happiness, and health. Read on to hear what you can do to change for good. Here's How To Stop Being Co-Dependent These are the strategies you'll want to start implementing (I know it's uncomfortable at first) to create solid boundaries and kick the HFC habit. Learn to say no, and mean it. No is an answer in itself and is crucial to setting good boundaries. Stay on your side of the street and stop taking the other person's emotional temperature. Become a great listener and ask excellent questions. This will help you avoid being triggered or controlling and be curious. Get into mindfulness and meditation (daily) and start building your ability to pause and take the time you need to assess and react how you most desire. This means learning to tolerate discomfort but remember that you are not fragile. You have what it takes to develop the skills and behaviors to have great boundaries. The most loving thing you can do is to lovingly let people be autonomous and have full sovereignty in their life and take responsibility for yourself. Terri Cole is a New York-based, licensed psychotherapist, relationship expert and founder of Real Love Revolution and Boundary Bootcamp, her two female empowerment courses reaching women in over 25 countries. Before earning a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychotherapy from New York University and adopting a daily meditation/green juice/exercise lifestyle, Terri worked as a talent agent negotiating contracts for actors and supermodels. A typical Type A overachiever with no balance or internal peace. Her ambition and fearless attitude fanned the “must get to the top” flames as she zipped across the country from Los Angeles to New York City fuelled by caffeine, nicotine, and adrenalin. When it became evident that the things (money, power, job) that she thought would make her happy didn't. She could no longer ignore the voice in her heart asking, “Isn't there something more meaningful you could be doing with your life than making supermodels richer?” Happily, there was. Her mission and dharma are teaching women how to attract and sustain healthy, vibrant, Real Love into their lives and how to establish and maintain effective boundaries with ease and grace. For two decades, Terri has worked with some of the world's most well-known personalities from international pop stars, athletes, Broadway performers and TV personalities to thought-leaders and Fortune 500 CEOs. She empowers over one hundred thousand women weekly through her published articles and blog posts, therapeutic meditations, online courses, and her popular The Terri Cole Show podcast. Terri's strategies combine practical psychology, eastern mindfulness practices plus harnessing the power of intention to create sustainable positive behavioural change and true transformation. She has been featured as an expert therapist and master life coach on A&E's Monster In-Laws, TEDx, The Lisa Oz Show, Real Housewives and had a weekly radio show on Hay House Radio. Plus, she regularly writes for The Huffington Post, Positively Positive, The Daily Love, Well+Good, and has been featured in Italian Elle, Forbes, Origin, Vogue, Self and she was on the cover of Inspired Coach magazine. Suzanne interviews boundary-setting expert Terri Cole, author of Boundary Boss, for a great discussion on boundary-setting, codependency, healthy relationships and more How often do you think about your breathing? Probably not much, right? Well, our breath is a valuable resource, an underused engine that can really power up our mojo as I share in the opening. I read my blog, The Forgotten Power of Your Breath. Then I move on to interview Terri Cole, a licensed psychotherapist, fellow podcaster and the author of an awesome book, Boundary Boss. What an empowering conversation we had! Terri really explains just why we lose our boundaries—and how to get them back in a hurry. Among other things, I learned from her: What boundaries are and why we don't know what ours are How to spot a boundary violation Why we shouldn't ‘be nice' all the time When NOT to set boundaries What ‘boundary destroyers' are and how to handle them What is a ‘High Functioning Codependent'? How to set internal boundaries … and a whole lot more. Much to love and learn in this episode! Terri Cole joins us on The Coachable Podcast today! Terri is a licensed psychotherapist, global relationship and empowerment expert, and the host of the The Terri Cole Show. We dive into the topic of codependency to talk about everything from how to unlearn our codependent habits and how it shows up in our relationships to what we're losing out on as a result of having these types of codependent patterns in our lives. This is one you don't want to miss! What are Boundaries? [4:15]“Boundaries are your own personal rules of engagement. We're letting people know what's okay with us and what's not.”“Your boundaries are composed of your preferences, desires, limits, and deal-breakers.”“Women are raised and praised for being self abandoning codependents.”“We should be asking ‘What about us?' to ourselves.”“When we say yes when we want to say no, the people in your life do not know you.”“How can people love us, if we don't let anyone know us?”Saying No [15:00]“For the next 7 days, don't give anyone an immediate answer.”“Instead of saying, ‘Oh, yeah, sure', you're going to normalize having a 24 hour thinking period.”“It's easier to give an authentic ‘No' when you haven't given a reactionary ‘Yes'.”Codependency [19:30]“Being overly invested in the feelings, states, decisions, outcomes, circumstances of the people in your life to the detriment of your internal peace- your physical, financial, emotional wellbeing.”“What makes you think you know what lessons others need to learn in this lifetime?”“When we're being codependent, we're centering ourselves in the middle of another person's problem. It's not about them-it's about us.”“High functioning codependency-you make it look easy, but you're still doing things for others that they can do themselves and putting yourself last on your list.”Our Intentions [28:00]“Allow yourself to feel relief that other's beliefs, circumstances, and emotions are not and cannot be your responsibility.”“Stop auto-advice giving. If someone comes with a problem, ask expansive questions.”“Assume that the people you love are capable. Ask for consent when speaking to their problems.”“We are not valuable because of what we do, or the value we add to the life of others. We are inherently valuable because we are alive.”“Healthy boundaries are a language. We have to learn them.”Redefine and reclaim where your worth comes from [36:00]“Do you do what you need for yourself in your relationships?”“In your partnership, you can write down what each person does on a whiteboard and decide how it can be more equitable.”“When we give from a place of emptiness, even when people are grateful nobody will be able to be grateful enough.”“Fine really means feelings internally not expressed.”Express yourself [45:00]“You can always be kind when it comes to boundaries and the truth.”“The idea of boundaries making you b*tchy or selfish, is not true.”“When we don't prioritize our feelings and tell the truth, we burden the people in our lives.”Connect with TerriBoundary Boss By Terri Cole: https://boundarybossbook.comTake the Boundary Quiz: https://boundaryquiz.com Visit https://www.terricole.comTry Organifi's delicious superfood products! I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of this week’s conversation with my guest Terri Cole. Terri is a licensed psychotherapist, relationship and empowerment expert, and author. She also happens to be a dear friend of mine. Her new book, Boundary Boss is available as of today and in this conversation, she walks me through the steps using a real-life example of an issue I was facing. The connections she was able to help me make and the clarity I found in this short conversation was remarkable! Terri talks about boundaries in a way that I haven’t seen before. As someone that thought I had strong boundaries, through this book, she defines them in ways that I wasn’t expecting and opened my mind to areas and experiences in my life that are boundary issues I hadn’t seen before. If you’re familiar with my work and what I call Invisible Losses, you will appreciate the connections that Terri makes to how those losses and past experiences show up in our present relationships and interactions. “The truth about boundaries is that they are not the blocks to the epic relationships we want. They are, in fact, the bridge.” ~ Terri Cole This episode is full of real-life examples and steps from Terri’s book that I’m certain will get you thinking about this in a different way, and hopefully also feel that it’s possible to make shifts in your own life. She highlights that when certain triggers or problems we face feel really big, it’s a good indication that it’s connected to a past experience that is showing up again. She reminds us, and in her book teaches us, how to shift out of the child experience and into our adult self. Terri is truly extraordinary in the way she explains and teaches these concepts. If you’d like to hear more of her personal story and how she went from running a top modeling agency to where she is now, be sure to listen to her first appearance on The Dear Life Podcast right here. I can’t wait to dive into the exercises in the book and explore these newly defined boundaries. I hope you will join me! I hope that you’ll listen and let me know what you think of this conversation. When it comes to relationships, a lot of us jump to the idea of compatibility. But do we understand the nuance of that term? It doesn’t have to mean a “matching set'' dynamic, or finding the perfect piece to your puzzle. Your partner doesn’t have to save you, fix you, or complete you. In fact, when a relationship turns towards reliance - complete reliance - you’re not experiencing compatibility, but codependency. It’s not about you, your partner, your family, or happiness- it’s about saving the marriage you believe you need, even if you don’t. In this episode of The Divorce Doctor Podcast, Terri Cole and I dive into codependency and boundaries through both marriage and divorce. Terri is both a licensed psychotherapist and has been a global relationship and empowerment expert for over two decades, working with clients from stay-at-home moms to celebrities and CEOs. Not only that, but Terri has a gift for making psychological concepts accessible to everyone, inspiring thousands through her blog, social media platform, signature courses, and her popular The Terri Cole Show podcast.
Cognitive distortions are habitual ways of thinking that are often inaccurate and negatively biased. Cognitive distortions usually develop over time in response to adverse events. There are at least 10 common distorted thinking patterns that have been identified by researchers. Cognitive Distortions – erroneous patterns of thinking. Examples: All-or-Nothing Thinking; Overgeneralizing; Discounting the Positive; Jumping to Conclusions; Mind Reading; Fortune Telling; Magnification (Catastrophizing) and Minimizing; Emotional Reasoning; Should Statements; Labeling and Mislabeling; Personalization. Interventions: CBT treatment usually involves efforts to change thinking patterns. These strategies might include: Learning to recognize one's distortions in thinking that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of reality. Gaining a better understanding of the behavior and motivation of others. Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations. Learning to develop a greater sense of confidence is one's own abilities. CBT treatment also usually involves efforts to change behavioral patterns. These strategies might include: Facing one's fears instead of avoiding them. Using role playing to prepare for potentially problematic interactions with others. Here it is…it's April! We made it through March. What a wild month of growth and expansion. Last February, I launched a deep dive program, The Soul Frequency Experience with the intention of taking people into the multidimensional four-step process in The Soul Frequency book. What happened in this sacred circle was powerful. We met for five Saturday's live through Zoom video chat and on the first week we dove into Energy Frequency, how it works, why it works, how to find your soul frequency, and how you can shift your energy to lose weight, create healthy relationships, manifest money, and release fear. DOWNLOAD MIRACLE MEDITATION NOW! During the five weeks, we had an incredible group chat going so everyone could share as things came up between sessions, and it proved to be an incredible part of the experience. I always say that you can't time your breakthroughs, so its always good to be connected throughout a transformative process and you can be supported through the aha moments. The heart and soul in this group was inspiring and the shifts were big. We have decided to open up the experience to a new group of soul seekers who want to shift their energy and create more goodness in their lives. Enrollment is officially open and the program will begin April 27th. There are a limited number of spaces; we like to keep it like to keep it a special and close sacred circle. Drawing from her new book, Too Much: A Guide to Breaking the Cycle of High-Functioning Codependency, Terri explains how behaviors like over-giving, fixing, and being overly invested in others' outcomes are often mistaken for love and care but can actually lead to burnout and resentment. We explore how to identify these patterns, shift out of autopilot advice giving, and build authentic connections through healthier boundaries. Packed with relatable insights and real life examples, this episode is a must listen for anyone seeking to reclaim their energy, set empowered boundaries, and transform their relationships. Dive in and discover how small shifts in behavior can lead to a more liberated and fulfilling life.
