While completing her BFA at Baylor University, Rebekah Danae's fourteen year painting practice was stylistically and thematically influenced by formative experiences in Belgium, studying Rene Magritte's surrealist blend of comedy and peril, and in Texas, learning from Sedrick Huckaby's metaphoric expressions offaith, community, and heritage.Sculpturally— through leatherwork and interior design— Danae's work has been influenced by the cowboy boot making community in Beggs, Oklahoma and the design firm of Christopher Murphy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In practice, Danae draws inspiration from Virgil Abloh, who blurred the lines of art and commerce through the tools of contemporary culture; Rebecca Belmore's ability to elicit intimate moments of reflection while tackling tremendous contemporary issues; the liberatory mysticism of Afrofuturism philosophy; the fiber artists of the wearable art movement in the 70s; and from the community-based relational practice of Rick Lowe.Through her work, Rebekah Danae and A Creative House orchestrate a movement in the middle of the country, made up of a diverse creative choir. Far from a lone ranger, Danae works collaboratively across a curated network of Oklahomans— from the punk underground, homegrown rappers and producers, luxury interior designers, rodeo cowboys, rural bootmakers, to philanthropic, political, and educational leaders. Her approach, while whimsical and surreal, has the intended impact of critical regional culture-shaping from the current white supremacy that is prevalent regionally today and toward a co-created futurist Oklahoma, the liberated West.

Positive Spaceby Laurelyn SayahAnother big issuefor our little townwas a grant for new logoswe couldn't turn down. It's not easy to pickjust one image, we found, for a spot known as specialthe whole world around. With so many good folks andhappenings in this place, the first shape put a frownon everybody's face.We were all unitedby what we didn't like, but then told each otherto go take a hike. The debacle was reportedby the Mountain Ear,which brought forth ideas,so let's give them a cheer. An artist thought ofspecial places she's known, and what was in commonwith the one she calls home. It's the journey to get here, the beauty and friendships, the desire to staydespite nature's hardships. So she tried out a sketchto capture that sense, hoping to easea discourse gone tense. Then other designersgave it a trace, and a positive meaningfor negative space. After some changingof lines that were blurred, the shape of the landscapeturned into a bird!...or maybe a dragon,or the dove on peace signs,or a phoenix rising upfrom frozen dead designs.Step back and look closer, whatever the feather, what you see is resultingfrom working together, and from difficult process, but now that it's done, let's enjoy the efforts, because everybody won.Use the moose and the bearfor stickers on your car,or make into boops,(whatever those are).Taglines on t-shirtswould look great in black, and at least we don't have togive grant money back.Best not to get stuckon what might offendwhen we face many morebig decisions to attend. We're still shoveling out,and soon we'll be weeding,so helping each otheris what we are needing. There's so much hereto be grateful for,and spiraling upliftwill make even moreSpring is here Nederland! So get out in the sun,Change up the clocks, and let's all have some fun! Live from San Diego,  It's Jim & Rafael (together again) People in every generation think they are the ones facing the greatest challenges of all time. Was the Holocaust, Civil War, Armenian Holocaust, Black Plague, Nagasaki and Hiroshima more traumatic than any of our current events? American sociologist Kai Erickson, author of “Everything in Its Path” and international teacher and scholar, Thomas Hubl, are both famous for coining the term “Collective Trauma.” They focus on the shared experience of the collective and why it matters. Trauma that impacts many of us on a collective level can lead to solutions on a global level. It can lead to collective empathy and alignment, e.g., how most of the world has united around Ukraine. Conversely, it can lead to a tsunami of dissociation, PTSD, Alexithymia, thought and emotional dysregulation, wars, factionalism, violence, and suicide.Jim and Rafael discuss Rafael's new office and Jim's office envy. They also go deep by exploring contemporary trauma events on a massive scale, i.e. COVID, the war in Ukraine, the slap heard around the world at the Oscars, inflation, ecological disasters, and the fraying of our social fabric. Collective traumas impact individuals within societies and individuals between societies. It is affecting what therapists are seeing every day. There is a ripple effect. We cannot “unsee” the war in Ukraine on T.V. Just a couple of years ago we were collectively upset about cyber bullying, the lack of a workable vaccine, masks as a political issue versus a health issue, fake news, the election, cancel culture, hate speech on Twitter. Now we are wondering if Elon Musk will take over Twitter and the world and we are on our second booster shot. Now it seems like you cannot even watch an awards show - - without it slapping you hard across the face.  Yet, there is good news listeners. Rafael and Jim discuss how we can tap into our most vulnerable parts of ourselves and find our greater self. Yes, we can cultivate gratitude and kindness and still believe that good triumphs evil - - without seeming overly Pollyanna. We can learn to self and co-regulate. There is an opportunity for the collective (not just individuals) to become courageous, resilient, determined, and aware. WCMI networking group A networking group for mindfulness-focused clinicians dedicated to learning together & collaborating for more information click here

There are many reasons why people may develop emotional or psychological problems during their lives, but LGBT people face particular challenges. Negative attitudes, discrimination and violence can contribute to mental and emotional distress for LGBT people. For trans people, transition itself can be stressful with many barriers to be overcome. Coming out can also be emotionally tough with many people having to deal with rejection from family and friends, and bisexual people face a unique stressor in coming out to partners or potential partners. Staying in the closet can also be stressful, leading to isolation and fear of discovery for some people. Bisexuals may experience the double closet, hiding their same-sex attractions from heterosexual friends and family and their other-sex attractions from gay and lesbian communities. Bisexuals may also experience social pressure to identify as either gay or straight. All of these stressors have a profound impact on the self-esteem and self-identities of LGBT people and studies show that LGBT people suffer from depression, anxiety and suicide at higher rates than the general population. LGBT people are more likely to be physically and verbally victimized than the general population. This is especially true for those who do not fit gender norms, such as the gay man who is effeminate or the lesbian who is butch. For trans people, the dangers are even more extreme. A 2004 Statistics Canada study showed that compared with heterosexuals, the odds of being victimized were nearly 2 times greater for gays and lesbians and 4.5 times greater for bisexuals. LGBT youth also experience high rates of bullying and harassment in schools. Michael Skynner presents a very open and informative session that outlines the various terms related to sexual orientation and gender identity and helps in our understanding of the LGBTQ community. He emphasizes the importance of being knowledgeable, accepting and non-judgemental when speaking with people who call the distress/crisis helpline. Michael provides concrete suggestions for creating a positive listening space for distress/crisis line callers and encourages the helpline call responder to make no assumptions and to allow the caller to define him or herself. Michael is a social worker, working within a family services agency, and he shares his knowledge and expertise from his many years of experience in the field of counselling through this video presentation. Glossary of Terms: Positive Space: Positive Space challenges heterosexist principles that exist in society and exposes the imbalances that are present within our infrastructure exposing a binary between heterosexual and those who self-identify as LGBTQ. The utilization of Positive Space takes an already dominated space, influenced by an ideology (heterosexism) challenges it and offers alternative ways to live in our society, rather than the singular notion of heterosexism which could be non-existent with the creation of inclusive policies. Heterosexism: A belief that everyone is or should be heterosexual; Societal/ Cultural, institutional, and individual beliefs and practices that assume that heterosexuality is the only natural, normal, acceptable sexual orientation Homophobia: An irrational fear or hatred of people who identify as homosexual. This fear may stem from the out-of-date belief that homosexuality is a mental illness, from personal religious beliefs about the post mortem fate of homosexuals, from the incorrect belief that homosexuals are responsible for AIDS, etc. Biphobia: Biphobia can be defined as a fear or dislike of people who do not choose to identify as either heterosexual or gay/lesbian that is, people who do not identify as at one or the other end of the dichotomy. Transphobia: prejudice, discrimination, and gender-related violence due to negative attitudes toward transgender identity Internalization of Homophobia, Biphobia or Transphobia: Self-hatred of one’s own identity as a result of “believing,” or accepting as true, the negative stereotypes of one’s identity. Queer: a word used by some interchangeably with LGBTQ and also meant to be inclusive of those who don't align themselves with traditional notions of gender, transsexual or transgender. Though it has become popular in some (usually predominately white) academic settings, not all LGBTQ folks are comfortable "reclaiming" the word and some find it offensive. Some see it as more inclusive that LGBTQ. Some see it as confrontational, exclusive, or problematic for other reasons Questions for Further Consideration As a call responder working on a distress/crisis line, it is important to be aware of your own beliefs and attitudes, and any assumptions or preconceived ideas you have that may interfere with your ability to do your best when assisting others. How can you help yourself be more prepared for your work as a helpline worker? Take the time to examine your own beliefs and attitudes when it comes to individuals with a diverse sexual orientation than your own. Do you view all people as equal or do you feel a reservation when it comes to accepting others? Imagine yourself in the place of the caller. What would you hope to hear and experience as part of the call. How can you be as sensitive as possible in order to provide the caller with a feeling of care and acceptance? Can an extended silence of a call responder on the phone helpline be interpreted as a negative thing by the caller? If a caller has identified him or herself as a gay, lesbian, bisexual or a trans person on a distress/crisis line, they may have taken what could feel like a very courageous step on their part, to disclose this personal information to the call responder. A lapse of time in responding to the caller, could indicate to the caller a lack of acceptance or understanding. Consider how important it is to acknowledge what a person has shared with you and the need for a caring, helpful response. Remember that acknowledgement and awareness can be signs of showing support. Creating a positive listening space is an important thing for a distress/crisis line worker to do for all callers. What is it you do on a regular basis that helps to ensure that you work towards creating a positive listening space for all callers on the helpline? How does this apply specifically to calls with a focus on LGBTQ issues? A conversation is made more challenging when one makes assumptions. Seek clarification, explore and try to understand fully. Use inclusive language and reaffirm to the caller that the service is a supportive one. Use a tone of voice that transmits a sense of safety for the caller. Follow the caller’s lead and let them proceed at their own pace. Reflect and be aware of the techniques you use to help a caller feel more comfortable and reduce the stress or anxiety they may experience when making that call to the distress/crisis line. Comments like, “you have a big belly,” or “you're not graceful” defined who she was in the world. In college, she successfully pursued a weight loss journey that she thought would open up more opportunities that were previously off limits due to her body size. When this didn't happen, Rachel felt angry and betrayed by both herself and society. In a moment of grief, Rachel cried to her husband, “there has to be more to love about me than this!” Thus was born, More to Love Yoga. As soon as Rachel embraced herself as a person, that's when the opportunities began to open up for her. Rachel's first experience with yoga was challenging as she unknowingly took a hot yoga class and wound up outside in the middle of a Boston February, grateful for the cold air. But, she kept going until she found a yoga class that, in yoga's true and authentic form, allowed her to just be. No judging, no comparing, no overthinking. After that, she chose to study at Kripalu, learning yoga skills specifically for teaching to larger bodies. Rachel currently teaches weekly yoga classes in Somerville, MA and offers an online WELL by MTL wellness program. She aims to educate and support plus size people on body acceptance and self-worth. Positive and negative space are compositional elements that describe what’s important in a photograph or visual composition and what is supportive. Positive space is usually the subject of your photography – its where you want to draw the eye of the viewer. The space this takes up in the composition is referred to as Positive Space. Negative Space refers to things like the background and supportive elements. Negative Space has a role beyond just staying out of the way. You can create interest by carefully using this negative space to support the subject in your photograph’s composition.
