Enrollment marketing strategy is no longer optional—it's essential for institutions looking to grow in a competitive, high-cost digital environment. In this episode, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Max DesMarais, CEO of Vital, about how colleges and universities can use data, content strategy, and full-funnel marketing to improve student recruitment and ensure academic offerings align with demand. Building an Effective Enrollment Marketing Strategy Validate program demand before launch using research, polling, and student behavior data. Use student-friendly program names that match what prospective learners are searching for. Treat marketing as a strategic function, not just an operational cost. Improving Program Visibility and Differentiation Define what sets your programs apart—and communicate it clearly. Avoid generic messaging; focus on outcomes, flexibility, and student needs. Promote content that supports early-stage decision-making, not just applications. Aligning Programs with Market Needs Adjust program format, pricing, and positioning to reflect real-world demand. Consider flexible tuition strategies and delivery models for nontraditional learners. Use community and employer input to shape offerings before they launch. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Lead with Research – Don't greenlight programs or campaigns without validating student and employer interest. Invest in Full-Funnel Marketing – Build awareness and trust early to reduce cost per lead and improve conversions. Clarify Differentiation – Know what makes your institution unique and ensure it's reflected in every message. Institutions that align marketing, academic planning, and student insights will be positioned to thrive in a shrinking enrollment environment. With 98% of higher education institutions looking the same and offering similar programs, the challenge for any single institution to stand out is immense. This episode of Changing Higher Ed, features Allen Adamson, co-founder of MetaForce, discussing the importance of branding and marketing in differentiating higher education institutions in an oversaturated homogeneous market. Adamson shares his insights from his vast experience in branding across various industries, emphasizing the need for higher education institutions to stand out to attract enrollment. Key Discussion Points The Branding Challenge in Higher Education: Higher education faces an oversupply of institutions and an undersupply of students, creating a critical need for effective branding and marketing strategies to attract and retain students. Why Higher Ed Institutions Should Look Outside the Industry for Branding and Marketing: Higher education institutions can benefit from adopting innovative marketing strategies proven successful in other sectors, enhancing their distinctiveness and appeal. Creating Unique Institution Identities: Crafting unique identities that resonate with potential students is essential. Institutions should leverage their unique heritage, location, or academic strengths to form a compelling brand identity. Strategies for Differentiation and Growth: Differentiation in a crowded market requires institutions to offer unique educational experiences and communicate these differences through strategic marketing effectively. Peripheral Vision in Branding: Institutions should extend their view beyond direct competitors and the education sector to identify unique positioning strategies and innovations from the broader market. The Role of Consensus in Decision Making: The challenges of consensus-driven decision-making within universities often lead to diluted branding strategies. More decisive leadership could enable stronger and clearer branding initiatives. Importance of Simplifying the Brand Message: A clear and simple brand message is crucial for effective communication. Institutions should focus on conveying a few key strengths or unique attributes to avoid overwhelming potential students. Differentiation Through Student Outcomes: Emphasizing unique student outcomes and success stories can differentiate an institution more effectively than focusing solely on features and facilities. Signature Experiences and Social Proof: Developing signature experiences that define an institution's brand and leveraging positive student testimonials can significantly enhance reputation and attractiveness. Actionable Insights Over Descriptive Content: Shifting focus from describing institutional offerings to highlighting actionable outcomes and real-world applications can make branding more effective and relatable. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Simplify and strategize: Prioritize simplicity in ideas for enhanced execution. Being ahead of the curve involves selecting straightforward concepts that can be brilliantly executed. Expand horizons: Break free from the confines of the usual environment. Look beyond the immediate surroundings and industry standards. Being ahead of the curve means seeking inspiration from diverse sectors and preparing for future market trends. Pursue excellence: Choose ideas that can be executed exceptionally rather than settling for mediocrity. Being ahead of the curve allows for iterative improvements, ensuring that when the timing is right, the execution is flawless, setting you apart from competitors. Last year our very own Greg was lucky enough to get picked to attend the first-ever SongSight Music Retreat in Scottsdale, AZ. The event was put on by Scott MacIntyre, a successful blind artist who placed in the top 10 of American Idol in 2009. There were seven attendees and Scott, along with several producers who have worked with big-name artists. All eight of the blind individuals teamed up to produce a single while there called Let the Light In . It does include a video as well with clips of each artist from the retreat. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-KC4zIjRXA This Sunday Anthony and Brynn are very excited to welcome Greg and a few of the artists to share their experiences and give us a glimpse into the production and recording booths. Bring your ears, questions and shouts of praise for these wonderful musicians live Sunday at 1pm. From his early days as a classical concert pianist to capturing the hearts of millions of American Idol viewers with his engaging presence and vocal prowess, Scott MacIntyre has never let challenges keep him from achieving his dreams. Having performed with such notable acts as Michael W Smith, CeCe Winans, and Greater Vision, he has traveled the globe inspiring audiences with his music and story. Grand Rapids native Tyler Zahnke has been singing and playing the piano since 2001 and has been on podcasts such as Lost in the Library and DisTopia, and has performed at the Amway Grand Hotel in Grand Rapids. Having been a musician for most of her life, Lizzie Dunn has combined these gifts with her passion for helping others and advocating for herself as a woman with a disability. Lizzie has composed a number of instrumental pieces honoring special occasions or accomplishments, and her music has been featured in local Grand Rapids news segments, exhibits and shows for local organization DisArt, and a compilation album of music by blind composers and performers. She attended Alma College and was a part of the Sigma Alpha Iota Women's Music Fraternity, and she is currently finishing her Masters of Social Work program at Western Michigan University while continuing her music for the enjoyment of herself and others. She has won several blindness-related scholarships based on her musical ability, her passion for advocating for accessibility and equity, and her goal of helping others as a social worker.
