Against Nuance (Mostly): The Virtues of Dogmatic Dualism (#281, 23 Jan. 2025)

In this episode, I explore the virtues of dogmatic dualism. Yes, I get some things are nuanced, but the vast majority of things are not: good/evil, right/wrong, black/white, yes/no, masculine/feminine; light/dark. I am not against nuance per se, but only as long as we don't forget the essential core truths that right 90% of the time. Yes, this episode, is a celebration of your conservative uncle, one of the most unnuanced people that that you know. He may think simplistically, but he's probably right most of the time. Trust dogmatic binary. Be skeptical of nuance before deviating from core truths. I explore this work through the work of Randy Pausch's Last Lecture, and the work of Carl Jung. I also offer an exercise from Pausch's book that will help connect you to the core dogmatic dualism that you should embrace.

Jetzt sollen neue Gesichter her, eine neue Strategie.

This is a special extended edition of Book Club. In 2008, Michael had the opportunity to speak with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeffrey Zaslow, co-author of "The Last Lecture" which he wrote with Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch. It focuses on a final lecture that many college professors give, except for Pausch, it was very real - he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He passed away in July 2008, just months after the book was published. The first part of this conversation with Mr. Zaslow by phone, and then a couple months later, he joined Michael in studio after they spoke in front of a live audience at the Keswick Theatre in June 2008 about "The Last Lecture." Mr. Zaslow has since also passed away, in 2012. Original air date Spring/Summer 2008. The book was published on 8 April 2008.

Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!Randy Pausch was born on October 23rd, 1960. As a young boy, he worked very hard in school, but he also had a lot of fun! He used his imagination a lot, too! Randy would sometimes spend hours just dreaming of all the things he wanted to do in his life. Things like being in zero gravity and floating like the astronauts do, playing football with an NFL team, working for Disney, and many more. In fact, he made a list of all the things he wanted to do...and then he set out actually figuring ways to do them! Randy Pausch went to college, where he eventually became Dr. Randy Pausch, and later he went to work as a computer science professor at a large university in Pennsylvania. It was during that time that he HELPED design some really cool virtual reality rides at Disney World! It was also during that time that he learned he had a bad disease and would not live very much longer. Dr. Pausch had been having fun all of his life, but now what? Would he become sad and start thinking about how unfair it was that he would not live much longer? Or would he continue to do the things he had always done as long as he could? Well, he decided not only to enjoy life like he always had before but to get really busy teaching others how to have wonderful and happy lives, too! He talked with hundreds of students in college. He wrote a book called, The Last Lecture – a wonderful book that is HELPING millions and millions of people everywhere! “Have fun,” he told them. “Dream.” And six little words, he said, are the most important words you can ever live by: “Tell the truth all the time.” Yes, that little boy who spent much of his childhood dreaming and making lists, and actually DOING those things on his lists, grew up to become a HERO. That's what I know about the beginning of This Hero, and I know that YOU Can Be a Hero TOO!Dear Parents, After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. MASTERING THE DURABILITY QUADRANT On September 18, 2007, a special group of folks got to witness in person one of the best presentations of the last 20 years. Randy Pausch, professor of science and human-computer animation, gave “The Last Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”[4] at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It achieved further acclaim on YouTube, and it was ultimately published as a book of the same name in 2008 that became a New York Times bestseller. In this presentation, Pausch discussed his life, his family, and his battle with pancreatic cancer. It's an emotional lecture filled with humor, great stories, many lessons, and nothing but relatable content. He concluded his talk by making the following powerful and inspiring statements: Brick walls let us show our dedication.Don't bail; the best gold is at the bottom of the barrels of crap.Be good at something. It makes you valuable.Work hard.If you do the right thing, good stuff has a way of happening. The talk is littered with emotionally driven and powerful doses of wisdom that leave the audience wanting more. A connection like no other is made. The theme is simple: He's human. You are human. We are all going to die, but it is what we do between now and then that matters. He ended with an amazing statement: The talk is not for you; it's for my kids. It may sound selfish, but it actually achieved the opposite effect. It showed us where his heart truly was—with his children. Who can argue with someone wanting to be a great father? You can't. It's a truly inspiring lesson from someone who understood the power of Durability. His message was universal, and it will be remembered for years to come because it served his family—and the many.

Life and death are the two biggest issues of life. However, few people would like to discuss them frankly. At Carnegie Mellon University, however, students are encouraged to think about death. In the university's “Last Lecture Series,” top scholars were invited to give a hypothetical “final talk” about what matters to them the most when their life comes to an end. While listening to the lectures, we involuntarily also think about how the questions apply to our own lives: What do we cherish the most? How should we lead our life? In 2007, CMU invited a special guest to return to their alma mater and give a lecture on this topic. That speaker was Randy Pausch, the author of this book. By that time, he had already been given a terminal diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, and had just a few months to live. So, to Pausch, it was literally a “last lecture.” In his lecture, Pausch didn't intend to instruct us on how to fulfill our dreams. Instead, he wanted to inspire us to think about how we can follow our dreams and achieve a unique and valuable life. Pausch's speech was full of humor, even making the audience laugh from time to time, but he also moved them to tears.

Getting a diagnosis of a communication disorder is not for the faint of heart. No one knows how long this road will last. No one can tell you how everything will go. What I do know is that specific, sustained effort on you and your child’s part is what will make all the difference. In the psychology world, this phenomenon is known as “grit”. Grit is defined as perseverance and passion toward long-term goals. In order to help your child succeed in their speech therapy journey, you are going to need grit to get you through it. There are going to be obstacles that come in your way. What are you going to do to face these obstacles? Do you give up easily, or reflect, redouble your efforts and find a way to move forward, even if it’s with unsure, unsteady steps forward? When researchers look at measures of success, they see that successful people aren’t necessarily the smartest people. The successful ones are the people who keep pushing to reach their goals, even when it gets really hard. Randy Pausch was a well-respected American college professor battling pancreatic cancer. He wrote a book about life lessons he wanted to impart before his death. In his book, “The Last Lecture”, he says that when you have a goal in mind, that a wall will inevitably come up in front of you. Pausch says that the wall is not there to tell us to stop. It’s there to ask us the question, “How bad do you want this?”You want amazing things for your child, but you will inevitably get downhearted when things don’t go how you think they should. That is the moment when your grit will be tested to see if you are really committed to the goal of helping your child develop their communication and grow into the person they were always meant to be. And I know you are. This continual development towards a goal is known as a growth mindset. When you have a growth mindset, you believe that even though things are difficult, and don’t come naturally to you, that the fight to achieve the end goal is too important to stop going. You are willing to go through the hard learning process in order to come out on the other side. And you’re better for it.The common, completely understandable, mindset that most of us fall into when life gets challenging is a fixed mindset. When you have a fixed mindset, you believe that things should come easily to you or your child with no real effort on either of your parts. And that if something is hard to do, then you should just stop doing it, or be frustrated that it isn’t easy. We all fall into this common trap. It’s not unique. And without being brought to awareness of it, you become a victim of it. That’s because parenting and helping your child to develop their communication is not easy all the time. It’s not easy to hold yourself together when all you want to do is cry. But that is exactly where your grit comes into play. When you are down as low as you can get, that is the time to brush yourself off, stand up, and live to fight the fight for another day. As you develop a growth mindset, you’ll begin to recognize that even though some things in life don’t come easily, that these are the things that are worth learning and doing. You’ll realize that even though the work may be hard, that you can figure out how to reach your goals. You’ll begin to think thoughts like “I can figure out how to make this work. I may not know how yet, but I know that I will not stop trying until I have reached my goal.”
