On Thursday's Sportscene, Steve Russell talked to local high school football coaches Gator Hoskins Andrew Thomas and Cornelius Ingram. Sean Kelley was in studio. Rex Grossman joined the show. Steve also talked to Max Chadwick and Mike Dirocco.
In the first hour, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes discussed Bears fans being in unfamiliar territory -- good things are happening at the quarterback position with Justin Fields. Later, the guys discussed their takeaways from the Bulls' 115-111 loss to the Pelicans Wednesday in Chicago.
The history between the Bears and Dolphins isn't all that long and isn't all that storied, in fact, you probably only remember one game with any kind of clarity. But the guys dive in and dig up all kinds of info on the Bears connections of the Dolphins first-ever head coach, who won their last playoff game, and if any of the '72 Dolphins are still alive (sadly, some are). They make fun of Bob Griese's facemask, get jealous over the number of interim coaches Miami has had and play a very funny game of "Guess who the Dolphins' original co-owners" were. Then they get into breaking down the matchups over the years. The teams have only played 13 times in 52 years and the Bears have only won four of them. Re-live the times Nat Moore caught a touchdown off Dan Hampton's helmet, Jim Harbaugh almost outdueled Dan Marino, Rex Grossman threw three interceptions, and Cody Parkey kicked a 53 yard field goal attempt about 30 yards. Andy amuses himself with the list of Bears' all-time leading receivers, again, and you'll learn what Bear is last in receiving yardage all-time. And for some reason they start talking '80s cable movies, the Spice Channel and early satellite dish technology. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message
Former Bears running back, and now actor/producer, Thomas Q. Jones stops by to talk about his new Amazon Prime series, Life After. He also recalls moments from his time with the Bears including his thoughts on Rex Grossman's performance in the Super Bowl. Then Greg and Aldo discuss the Bears disappointing loss to the Commanders, what's ahead for the offensive line and more.
Tim makes his triumphant return with the third season of Courts N' Fields. He brings on NFL fanatic Kevin Mendelsohn to preview the 2022 NFL season. The guys discuss each division and give a Super Bowl... err... Big Game prediction. Along the way they stop the bus to pick up Rex Grossman, Brian Urlacher, Bobby Witt Jr., Julio Rodriguez, CM Punk, All Elite Wrestling, and 90s chain themed restaurants. Welcome to the 2022 NFL season! Will the Seahawks beat the Denver Broncos and Russell Wilson? Can the Buffalo Bills win the championship? Who is the second receiver on the Colts? Find out this and more!
This week we start off our episode sitting down and talking to Gator legend Ben Troupe. We talk about everything from Ben being recruited from a small town in South Georgia to who throws a better ball, Rex Grossman or the late, great Steve McNair. We then shift to recruiting where we talk about the huge weekend the Gators and Coach Spence which leaves Mike no choice but to acknowledge the Chaos! Tune in and enjoy! Support the show
In the second hour, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes looked back at quarterbacks who were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in the past 20 years and examined which ones overcame bad team situations to become great players. Will Justin Fields be able overcome his tumultuous situation with the Bears to someday become a great quarterback? Later, the guys held the High Noon segment, where Bernstein shared a story about a dangerous place to live and Holmes shared his review of Hulu's "Predator" prequel "Prey."
Listen to a new episode of PIVOT, a show brought to you by YNS Live with NFL Thread recorded live on Fireside with hosts Juliet Hahn and Cynthia Zordich featuring special guests Kurt Coleman. Kurt Coleman is a 10-year NFL veteran. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 7th round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He continued his career in Kansas City, Carolina, New Orleans, and Buffalo Bills. In 2011, Kurt intercepted quarterback Rex Grossman three times in the Eagles' 20-13 win at the Washington Redskins. He was the first Eagles player since 1966 to have 3 interceptions in one game. The 2015 season was a special season for Kurt and the Carolina Panthers. Kurt recorded a career-high 9 interceptions and helped the Panthers solidify their spot in Super Bowl 50. He played collegiate football at The Ohio State University, where he earned first-team All-American honors, All-Big Ten Honors, and earned Team Captain honors in 2009. In 2007, Kurt co-founded the Ohio States chapter of Uplifting Athletes, a charity dedicated to raising awareness for rare diseases. Throughout college and his NFL career, Kurt has always been called to help those around him and give back to the community. He has worked with various charities, such as Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation, ACS, CMTA, Carolina Breast Friends, and many more. In 2006, breast cancer hit close to the Coleman family. His father Ron was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy. Kurt and his family saw the damage and strain that cancer can wreak on a family. Ron and Kurt went on to fund Coleman4aCure, their family charity that focuses on helping families battling cancer. Coleman4acure focuses on spreading awareness of male breast cancer. They have impacted families in Ohio, Philadelphia, and North Carolina. Kurt and his wife Laura along with their four kids are especially passionate about making a difference in the Charlotte community. They are partnering with the American Cancer Society - Making Strides and The Pink House. In 2018, the Colemans officially made Charlotte home and they look forward to serving the Charlotte community for years to come. Kurt likes to live his life similar to his father's slogan during his battle with cancer “don't have a bad day, just bad moments”. Presently, Kurt is working as the Stewardship and Scholarship Administrator at Charlotte Latin creating programs for underprivileged families and serving as the Carolina Panthers Color Commentator. Follow Kurt on Instagram. Remarkable Quotes “I admire my dad for his willingness to talk about his cancer. It takes a lot of courage and strength to actually be vulnerable, to talk about some of our real issues. I mean, there's a reason why the suicide rates of men are seventy-five percent more likely to commit. “I believe we internalize issues as men because we have ‘masculinity.' Well, what is that?” “I learned to mix vulnerability with strength from my father, and I continue to lean on him and his mantra, which is, ‘Have a bad day tomorrow.'” “Through all the chemo treatments he had to go through - it was, ‘Have a bad day tomorrow. Have a bad moment. Don't have a bad day.'” “Take these gems throughout life that people are giving you and hold on to them because you're going to go through things in life and these lessons are invaluable.” “I realize that I have a lot of life to live, and I'm going to go through things. And when I do go through things, I'm gonna lean on the experiences of others - that I love - to help me get through.” Sponsor The YNS Live With NFL Thread Super Bowl Experience is sponsored by Shutterstock Editorial. Big Cat says all is well with Mitchell Trubisky unless he has to throw left, but he also maintains that the Bears are notorious for ruining quarterbacks - so much so that Big Cat wishes for the days of Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman again.
On this episode, a once upon a time die hard bears fan will talk about the current status of the bears and the continued hope for improvement. Me...? I stopped being a bears fan when Kyle Orton got them to the super bowl. Lovie Smith took Kyle out and put Rex Grossman in. Kyle Orton's record that year was 13-3 I think.

Were continuing our series, Looking Under the Hood. Were talking about not just the what of our faith but the why and the how. This morning we are turning our attention to understanding why the church believes that Christ is divine and not just a man, not just a good teacher or even a Prophet. Why do we believe He is God incarnate? Many of you know Im a Bears fan. I have not attempted to hide that fact over the years. Years ago, it was a Sunday night game, and the Bears were playing the Falcons. To show you what a diehard fan I am, it was seven below zero for that Sunday night game. It was just freezing. The quarterback that we had-this was B.C., before Cutler. If youre a sports fan, you understand that. We had a quarterback by the name of Rex Grossman who was hurt. His backup, Kyle Orton, was in the game, and he was not doing well. Everybody in the stands was cheering, Rex! Rex! Rex! Rex! In the second half, he comes running out-the first action since his injury, and the place goes nuts. Hes moving the ball, we scored and we won the game. Everybody loved him, Rex is a savior! Rex is going to lead us to the Promised Land. The next year, he was not having a good season. I made my annual voyage to Soldier Field. While he was playing, they were booing basically every time he came onto the field. We want Orton back! We want the other guy back! The guy that we booed last year-now were cheering him, and we want him in the game. The guy that we cheered for last year-the guy that was our savior-were now booing him and we want him out! I just remember thinking to myself how fickle people are, how fickle we are. Friends, people have not changed. If people are fickle now, they were fickle in the times of the Bible too. This crowd-this Palm Sunday that we reflect on and are chanting, Here comes the King! Hosanna Lord, save us! Those who are pledging their allegiance to Him, throwing down their cloaks and throwing down their palm branches, some of that same crowd just days later is going to be cheering for Him to be crucified. They dont like the idea of the Messiah being arrested or the Messiah being beaten. Thats not their idea of the Messiah. The Messiah is to come and conquer. Hes going to lead, and there were times when they tried to get Jesus to be king if you recall; and He rejected those attempts, but the crowd was fickle. Thats how people are. Jesus was not a safe teacher. There are some churches in America where you hear a very different Gospel. They try to present Jesus as somebody who is very safe, somebody who only said nice things like turn the other cheek and love your enemies- the Golden Rule. But Jesus was anything but a safe teacher. In fact the Bible says that many of the things Jesus said were scandalous. The Old Testament-the Prophet Isaiah said that the Messiah would be a scandalon. Peter in 1 Peter 2:8 said that Jesus was a scandalon. That meant a trap, a rock of offense, something that causes people to stumble and fall. Jesus was not safe. Jesus said things that were controversial. Jesus said things that caused men to stumble in their walk and their faith-not in the sense of telling them air, but in the sense that though it was true, they could not understand it. It was offensive to say the things that He said about Himself. Still today, if you say that Christ is God in the flesh, it is offensive to people. Say that to somebody who is an Orthodox Jew and see what their response is. Say that to somebody who is committed to Allah-that Jesus was not just a Prophet but He is the divine Son of God, and watch the response. The response to the things that Jesus said was very strong in the times of the Bible. In fact there were times when He said things that were so egregious that they immediately were filled with rage and wanted to kill Him. Have you ever heard somebody say something that just enraged you instantly? Maybe youre traveling abroad and somebody says something about your country, says something about Americans, and it just makes you mad. I remember I was a pretty peaceful kid growing up. In grade school, I got into a couple scraps. Both times it was when they said something about my mom. Say anything you want about me, but if you say something about my mama, theres trouble. To this day if you say something about my mom, Ill punch you in the nose. If someone says something about your child or somebody that is precious to you, it immediately causes this visceral reaction, this rage. If somebody says something derogatory about your God or if somebody says something blasphemous about Jesus… Maybe youre watching television. Theyll do something that mocks Christ. Tell me that doesnt cause anger to well up inside of you. Friends, there were things Jesus said about Himself, things that He did that caused this kind of anger-this kind of rage. Were going to join the story here in John 8 of a dialogue that has become increasingly tense between the Pharisees and Jesus. Keep in mind that the Pharisees are the religious leaders. The Pharisees are the ones who claim to know God the most. Yet, they were the very ones that Christ had the most confrontations with. In Verse 48 of John 8 (page 1060 of pew Bibles), The Jews answered Him and said, Arent we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed? To call Christ a Samaritan was a racial slur. Think of a racial slur, something very derogatory you could say about another race that would cause instant anger. Thats what theyre seeking to entice in Christ; by calling Him a Samaritan, they are making a racially prejudice remark designed to get under His skin-designed to cause Him to become angry or to be hurt. Of course, saying Hes possessed of a demon is to have a similar effect. I am not possessed by a demon, said Jesus, but I honor My Father and you dishonor Me. I am not seeking glory for Myself; but there is One who seeks it, and He is the judge. I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps My Word, he will never see death. Thats a controversial thing to say, isnt it? Now Hes talking here not about physical death, but Hes talking about spiritual death. They understand it to be physical death. …the Jews exclaimed, Now we know that You are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the Prophets, yet You say that if anyone keeps Your Word, he will never taste death. Are You greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the Prophets. Who do You think You are? Thats an interesting question. Thats a question that people have been trying to answer for many centuries. Who is Jesus? Who did He claim to be? Some would have us believe that Hes just a man, that He taught that He was just a man, or that His followers believed He was nothing more than a great man or a Prophet of God. Were going to listen right now to a short clip before we finish this text from the movie, Da Vinci Code, which we started last week. Last week, by the way, over 40 percent of you were gone because of the weather; so we did talk about the credibility of the New Testament and how the Bible came to be. You might want to pick that up as part of your series in case you missed it. We showed a clip from the Da Vinci Code with Leigh Teabing, also known as Professor X or Gandalf the Grey. It is talking about how the Bible came to be and how the deity of Christ came to be, so lets listen to what he says. Well I could take the remainder of our time this morning and correct a lot of the things that he said there. Im not going to do that because thats not our topic, but the deity of the Christ-the divinity of Christ-was not at stake at Nicaea. Nicaea was about whether He was equal with the Father and co-eternal with the Father; or the same substance as the Father; or was He of a similar substance-still divine but also created by God? That was the debate. Bishops from around the world-the east and the west-gathered in Nicaea. They did hold a vote; they did adopt a creed. The vote was over 300 to 2. There were 2 that sided with whats called Aryanism-that He is a created being. The majority of the bishops-99 point some percent of the bishops-said and affirmed the deity of Christ, what the church had always believed. Lets look at history. Does it make sense that the Apostles died for their faith-that they thought that Christ was just a man or a Prophet? That would not get them killed. Would it make sense that under Nero and other emperors that Christians would be fed to the lions and burned alive at the stake if all they thought was that Christ was a man? They were tortured and killed because they would not worship the Roman gods; because they would not worship Caesar as God; because their allegiance was to Christ as God. So where does that come from? Where does this whole idea of the divinity of Christ come from? It comes from Christ Himself. It comes from the words that He spoke. Remember this dialogue that were in, and its getting increasingly agitated. Theyre getting increasingly hot under the collar, so theyve resorted to name calling back and forth. Who do you think You are? Jesus replied in Verse 54, If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the One who glorifies Me. Though you do not know Him, I know Him. Understand Hes saying this to the religious leaders. These are the poster boys for faith, and Jesus has the audacity to say, You dont even know God! That's certainly going to demand a response! Though you do not know Him, I know Him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you… Well, that will calm things down right away. But I do know Him and keep His Word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing My day. He saw it and was glad. Oh, time out. Wait a second now; youve just taken a train to crazy town here. You are saying that You saw Abrahams response to Your coming? Abraham is a couple thousand years old, right? You have to be thinking this? You would think somebody was delusional if they are being patriotic and she or he says, You know, when our country signed the Declaration of Independence, what a great day that was! I remember watching George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and seeing the smiles on their faces when they signed that document! Youd go, You know, come on! Who are you kidding? So thats what they say to Jesus. They say, Youre not even fifty years old, and Youve seen Abraham? You have to know that some are chuckling and laughing. This guy is wacked! He is absolutely crazy if He thinks He has seen Abraham with His own eyes. Then Jesus is going to take the conversation to another level. He is going to say something that is so controversial that causes such anger that the dialogue is going to end. Its going to end with them wanting to kill Him. I tell you the truth, Jesus answered, before Abraham was born, I am! At this, they picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus hid Himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. If your Bible says, I am He, the He will be in italics. Most of your Bibles will simply say, I am. Why did that so enrage the Pharisees? The words I am or the verb to be is the covenant name for God. In the Old Testament when God appears to Moses in the burning bush, thats whats called a theophany or physical manifestation of the presence of God that can be seen by the eye of man. Moses is told to go to Pharaoh to say, Let my people go, and he says, Who shall I say sent me? God says through the burning bush, Tell him I am. Tell them I am has sent you, so that became the covenant name for God. Jehovah, Yahweh, I am. So when Jesus takes and says, Before Abraham was born, I am, He has taken the covenant name of God to Himself and applying it to Himself. They understand that, and you can tell they understand it because theyre going to pick up rocks. If He is just a crazy man, hed be like, Yeah, Im 2,000 years old! I lived before Abraham! Whoo! Im crazy! Theyre not going to pick up rocks; theyre going to feel sorry for the guy. Theyd probably pat Him on the back and go, Okay, sure you were. Thats all right, pal. Yeah, sure, You knew Abraham. Lets leave Him alone. Hes nuts! But straight-faced, He takes the covenant name for God to Himself, meaning that He saw Abrahams day. It gets worse after that. John 10, Jesus is talking about the fact that Hes our good shepherd-that were His flock. He even talks about you and me here, literally. In Verse 16, He says, I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen… Thats Gentiles. …I must bring them also. They too will listen to My voice, and there shall be one flock… Following this discourse, many of these same people confront Christ again in Verse 19. At these words the Jews were again divided. Many of them said, He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to Him? But others said, These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind? They start to use their reason. Demon-possessed people froth at the mouth; they cut themselves; they growl; they snarl. They dont teach as Christ taught. They dont say things that will stump the wisest theologian of the day. No, no-these are not the words of a crazy man. There must be another explanation. Verse 22, Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. Whats that? Do you know what that is? Its winter-thats a clue. Its Hanukkah; its the Festival of lights. Its the rededication of the temple when Maccabeus drove out Antiochus, Epiphanies and the Seleucids. Actually for a period of time, Jerusalem is in control of their destiny. Theyre not under Rome; theyre not under anybody. Its a very happy time in the history of Israel. Jesus comes, and Hes celebrating that. Its the Feast of Dedication; its Hanukkah. While Hes walking there in Solomons Colonnade, it said that Jews gathered around Him. Theyre curious-who is this Man? They say, How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly. He has their curiosity aroused. Apparently, taking the covenant name of Jehovah on to Himself was not enough. Some want more proof. Jesus answered, I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in My Fathers name speak for Me. Its interesting, and this is an apologetic in and of itself, the miracles of Christ testify to His deity. Do they not? If you have control over the elements, if you have control over life and death, is that not a testament to the deity of Christ? Whats more is the critics of Christ-the enemies of Christ-do not question the miracles. That is an apologetic. That is a defense of the faith. They try to come up with other rational explanations for the miracles, but they never question the miracles. They become angry about how He did it and when He did it, but they never question the fact that He did it. So before you got me off track, where was I here? He says, …but you do not believe because you are not My sheep. My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life… That is a bold thing to say, to tell someone you give them eternal life-that you have the authority and capability to give someone eternal life. …and they shall never parish; no one shall snatch them out of my hand. They understand when He says My Father that Hes speaking about God in Heaven. My Father is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of My Fathers hand. I and the Father are one. Some have taught that when He says one, it means Hes in agreement with God. Theyre on the same page. Hes saying, Yeah God! Im on Gods side. Were one. Were united. Were a team! Really, does that get rocks thrown at you? If you go to religious people, and you say, Hey, thumbs up for God, are they going to try to kill you? No, theyre going to go, Oh, okay. Yeah, youre one of us. You love God too. Would you say that these people understood the language Christ was speaking and that words meant better than the scholars that are alive today? If English became extinct like Koinonia Greek is no longer spoken, if our English-our modern-day English became extinct, in 2,000 years from now if somebody was an expert in English, would they understand the language better than us who lived it? No way. We would know the language better than them. Even the most-learned scholar 2,000 years from now would not understand our language because we speak it every day. Make no mistake about it when Christ claims the oneness with the Father, they understand He is referencing His equality with God. That is seen by their words; that is seen by their response. It says, Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone Me? We are not stoning You for any of these, replied the Jews, but for blasphemy, because You, a mere man, claim to be God. The understanding that Christ is divine comes from none other than Christ Himself. It is what the early church taught and believed. It was not the result of a council in Nicaea in 325 A.D. It was not the decree of an emperor. It was from the words of Christ Himself. The visceral response was, Were going to murder You! The law said in Leviticus if somebody blasphemes God, you stone them; but that was only after trial and evidence and a jury made a verdict. Then you were sentenced and then you were stoned. They were saying, Were going to be Your judge and Your jury. Were going to kill You right now! They were so angry, so offended. He is a scandalon; He is a rock of offense that causes men to stumble. That was a scandalous thing to say, and, friends, it still is. If someone were to say the things that Jesus said, you would be offended. You certainly would not follow them. Jesus said to see Him was to see God; to know Him was to know God; to believe in Him was to believe in God; to obey Him was to obey God; to follow Him was to follow God; to serve Him was to serve God. He was the source of eternal life; no one came to God but through Him; that He was the way to Heaven; He was the truth of God. Can you imagine? Ill pick on Pastor Jerry now. Hes not here, so Ill pick on him. Oh, he is here. Sorry, Jerry. Ill do it anyway. You go to Pastor Jerrys class. I dont normally do that, Jerry. I dont pick on you because youre not here. Anyway, Im in big trouble. Jerrys a good teacher, so you go to one of his classes. Ill always ask, Hey, how was that marriage class with Pastor Jerry today? Its a normal conversation. Ill hear, Oh, it was great. So you go to Pastor Jerrys class, How was Pastor Jerrys class? It was great! Thats good to hear. Hes a good teacher! Yeah, yeah. We learned a lot today. I learned this and that. I am like, Wonderful! Great, Im glad you liked the class. The next week, I say, How was class with Pastor Jerry? Oh, it was really good. Today Pastor Jerry told us hes athletic. Yeah, he is. He played three sports, and hes a pretty athletic guy. Hes a coach; yeah thats true. Yeah, hes an athletic guy. I see you the next week, How were things with Pastor Jerry? Oh, it was a great class. Jerry is a good Bible teacher. Today he told us that he was strong, and he broke a railroad tie with his hands. These are things Jerry actually does-truthfully. Hes won some contests-bench press contests. Hes a strong guy. He told us that today. Well, thats true. He is a strong guy. How was class with Jerry? I ask the next week. Oh, it was good. Jerry told us today hes a good-looking man. Well, yeah. Jerrys a good-looking guy, sure. And he reminded us again that he was athletic. Well, yeah, he is. I see you the next week, How was class with Pastor Jerry? Well, you know, hes a good teacher, but today he told us that if we saw him, we saw God, and he told us that hes the way to Heaven. He did? Are you sure you werent mistaken? No, he wrote it on the board, Im the way to Heaven. Im the truth, and no one gets to Heaven but through me. Now what do you think about Pastor Jerry? Do you think hes a great teacher still, or do you think maybe hes cuckoo? He has issues, loco in the cabeza. Good teachers dont go around claiming to be God. That's the point of C.S. Lewis in his book, Mere Christianity. C.S. Lewis says, Look at the claims of Christ. You have the same choices to make about the words of Christ according to Scripture as you would with our hypothetical story of Pastor Jerry. Either he is crazy, delusional, really believes that he is the Messiah-you could go into any psychiatric ward in the country and you could find a lot of Jesuses… But nobody believes them. Theyre not walking on any water. Or, around our world today there are cult leaders. Right now there is a Hispanic-Latin man who is teaching that hes Jesus, and people believe him-whether you know that or not. They believe he is God incarnate. He smokes; he drinks; he tells people there is no sin. Sin is a bad word. This is true! People believe he is the incarnation of Christ. Hes rich; hes making a lot of money. Hes living quite a lifestyle. You could say, Well, hes trying to deceive people. He knows hes not. In that case, hes wicked. Listen, Jesus said in John 8 to His enemies, Who among you accuses Me of sin? Try saying that even to your family. Go to your family and say, Hey, have I ever done anything wrong? Do that to your friends, Hey, youve never seen me do anything wrong, have you? We laugh, but try doing that with your enemies. Go to somebody who doesnt like you-if there is such a person-and say, Hey, Ive never done anything wrong, have I? That takes a lot of nerve to go to your enemies and say, Who of you accuses Me of sin, and have silence be the response. Jesus is a moral man. No one questioned that. Hes an intelligent man. Nobody thought He was crazy. Whats our third alternative? Our third alternative is He is who He claimed to be. He is Lord. His miracles testify; His Resurrection testifies that He is who He claimed to be. Now this kind of an understanding of the nature of Jesus should not be reserved to a theological discussion, a creed or an intellectual statement or doctrine. This truth demands much more personal response, an emotional spiritual response. In the same Book, we find the story of a man who had been born blind. Jesus encounters him begging and uses him as a moment to teach. He says in Verse 5 of Chapter 9 (page 1061 of pew Bibles), While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. He spits upon the mud, and He makes clay and rubs it on the mans eyes. He tells him to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam. The mans eyes are open, and he begins to see. For the first time in his life, he sees color. He sees people; he sees his own hand; he sees trees; he sees water. His senses are overwhelmed. This man who was a beggar now has sight, and the people who have seen him year after year after year-the people are coming up to him and saying, Arent you the guy? Who did this to you? What happened? They ask him in Verse 10, How were your eyes opened? He replied, The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see. Where is this man? they asked him. I dont know, he said. How does he see Jesus? He sees Him as a man. Hes a pretty special man, but as far as this man knows, Hes a man. Thats all he knows. Then they bring him before the Pharisees. The Pharisees ask him what happened. He tells them the same story again. The Pharisees say, Well, this man is not from God. He doesnt keep the Sabbath. Theyre not rejoicing in this miracle of a blind man seeing. Theyre upset because it happened on the Sabbath day when you shouldnt work. To make mud was to work. …How can a sinner do such miraculous signs? others asked. Finally they turned to the blind man and said, What do you have to say about Him? It was your eyes He opened. The man replied, He is a Prophet. His viewpoint has changed, hasnt it? I now dont just see Him as a man, I see Him as a Prophet of God. I have new understanding of who He is because of what He has done. He couldnt possibly be just a man. The dialogue deteriorates here. As they question the man, he gets a little snotty. He gets a little bit too big for his britches, and they cast him out of the synagogue. Who are you to talk to us like that? You were born in sin. Were the leaders, and get out of here, so they kick him out. Verse 35, it says, Jesus heard that theyd thrown him out, and when He found him… Who found whom? Did the blind man find Jesus, or did Jesus find the blind man? Jesus found the blind man, and it still works that way, friends. God is a seeker. God is the initiator. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. If youve found Christ today, its not that you found Christ; its that Christ found you. Christ is the seeker of the souls of men. He said, Do you belive in the Son of Man? Jesus still asks that question. The Son of Man, by the way, comes from the Book of Daniel. In Daniel, he prophesized about the Son of Man receiving a kingdom from the ancient of days-thats an eternal kingdom, and that Hell rule over that kingdom for all of eternity. So it was understood that the Son of Man was a Messianic figure, the Son of God. This is one like the Son of God who received a kingdom that would last forever. Jesus takes that prophesy from Daniel, and He applies it to Himself. Again, an assertion of deity. Who is He, sir? the man asked. Tell me so that I may believe in Him. Jesus said, You have now seen Him; in fact, He is the One speaking with you. In other words, I am the Son of Man. The man replied, Lord, I believe, and he worshipped Him. How had he changed? Hed gone from seeing Him as a man to a Prophet, and now he sees Him as Lord. Hes the Lord, and he worships Him. What does Jesus do when the man worships Him? Does Jesus say, Oh, dont worship Me. Im just a Man. Dont worship Me! Im a Prophet!? Anytime in the Bible like somebody like Paul or Peter or a Prophet-when people try to worship them, what did they do? An angel? Dont worship me. Im just a man! When Jesus is worshipped, what does He do? He receives the worship. He receives the worship. Only God receives worship, right? Correct. By Jesus receiving the worship, that also is a statement of deity. Jesus still demands a response from every single person. The Jesus that we preach here is not a safe Jesus. Hes not just a good teacher that walks around blessing everybody, healing people and saying, Love your neighbor. He is a Jesus that came and died for your sins. He is a Jesus that said, Unless you believe I am He, you will remain in your sins. He is a Jesus who said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but through Me. Friends, those words are as offensive as when they were spoken to some people. That is a stumbling block for them. But there are many ways to God! There are many sources of salvation! they will say. There is only One who died for you, and that is Christ. There is only One qualified to save your soul; and that is Jesus. Its a scandal. Its a stumbling block. One of my favorite artists-I dont know if hes recording music so much anymore, but because he is a scholar and a theologian, he wrote some very rich music. One of his most famous tunes, Love Crucified a Rose, will be sung on Easter Sunday around the nation. His name is Michael Card. He wrote a song called, Scandalon, using this Greek word, using this Old Testament Prophesy from Isaiah about the Messiah. Were going to listen to song-just text only. There are no images in this one. Lets reflect on Michal Cards song. (Click here for lyrics: http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/m/michaelcard9232/lovecrucifiedarose543715.html). It is my prayer today that if youre here this morning, and you dont know Christ, you can know Him today. It is Jesus who we studied and learned so much about and longs to have a relationship with you. Pray this with me: If youre here this morning, you do not know Christ and you wish to respond to Him today-Heavenly Father, I come to You today in Jesus name. Lord, I believe in my heart that You are the Son of God, that You died in my place upon the cross and that You rose again on the third day-that Youre Lord. I give my life to You, my soul to You. Forgive my sins and cleanse me. I pray your Holy Spirit would enter my life, empower me to live for You all my days and that one day I will live with You in Heaven for all eternity. In Jesus name. Father, for those who prayed that prayer, extended their faith, received You by faith, Your promise is their sins are forgiven. A miracle of a different kind is taking place, a miracle that we cannot see with our eyes, but we can know with our hearts a new life in Christ is theirs. Lord, weve tried to present an accurate representation of what You taught and what You did at our church, that You are not a safe teacher. Your message was a very dangerous one, and there were many who fell. It was a scandalous thing and still is to say that a human being is divine. You demonstrated that not only through Your teaching as You taught as no man has ever taught; and only through Your miracles which even your enemies could not dismiss; but Lord most importantly through Your Resurrection and the empty tomb. Next week well talk about that. Well invite friends, families, coworkers and neighbors to come and hear this message, to come and hear the story of the Savior who loved them, who was crucified and who rose again. I pray even now that You prepare hearts, grant us favor as we speak, that this place would be full of people who want to hear the good news of Christ. Lord, like the blind man who had seen physically and then began to see spiritually, might we see You for who You are. Might we celebrate that every day of our lives-that the God of the universe visited this planet and that He gives our life meaning, significance and purpose-we might be determined all the more to live for You. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
Lets turn to Isaiah 6. While youre finding that, remember I spoke about Rich Mullins? He is the Christian artist who wrote Our God is an Awesome God, Step by Step, Sing Your Praise to the Lord, and a number of other songs. Ten years ago, he passed away in an untimely death. A car accident took his life ten years ago. He was a man who took a vow of poverty and gave every penny-every dime-of every record, every concert, every royalty, to the poor. He lived on an Indian reservation, having a meager salary from a small church on a Navajo Indian reservation when he could have been a pretty wealthy man. He was a young man who really captured my attention early in the ministry. I not only bought his music, but I really enjoyed what he had to say. I thought by way of introduction this week, we would play a little clip of Rich Mullins. Those of you who have never seen what he looks like can see him and hear his heart a little bit as he talks about the glory of God. Lets play a little clip, and then well get into the Word. At the close of the service this morning, were going to see Rich Mullins video called The Other Side of the World about missions. Youre going to see the setting as a dump in Guatemala City. If youve gone on any of our church missions trips to Guatemala City, you will recognize that dump. Its a place where our church has ministered on a number of occasions. Shelley and Jason Raddenbach, from our church-we send there as missionaries-live near that area and have been to that dump many times. So when that video comes up, some of you will recognize that scene that he sings in as a backdrop. We talked about the glory of the Lord and what that is. Isaiah is going to encounter that in the sixth chapter of his book that bears his name. Isaiah receives a vision from God. This is not a dream. This is not some sort of something that happens only in his mind. This is something Isaiah experiences, and he is trying to communicate to us the reality of what he saw in Heaven. He sees the Lord and the Lord is on His thrown, and he says this train filled the temple. He talks about the angels flying overhead. He talks about what they were saying. He speaks of how their voices shook the room. Thats the angels now, not God-just the angels voices shook the room. Now the room was filled with smoke and incense. Hes trying to describe this heavenly scene as best he can. He sees God and hears his response. He says in Verse 5 (of Isaiah 6, page 680 of pew Bibles), Woe to me! I cried. I am ruined! The word ruined means to be cut off, to be destroyed. What Isaiah is saying here is he encounters God in all of His holiness. The first thing he reflects upon is his own impurity, his own sin, and he says, I should just die right now because Ive seen God. He says, …I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips… If your lips are unclean, if what comes out of your mouth is unclean, its because what is on the inside is unclean. Jesus says out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. What Isaiah is saying here is I am unclean. I am impure from the inside out. There is nothing about me that should stand in the presence of the Holy God. Then an angel does something very symbolic. He takes a coal from the fire with tongs, and he comes over and touches Isaiahs mouth. The angel says, Your sin has been atoned for. Youve been forgiven. That fire represented Gods purity and His ability to cleanse from sin. Then, the Word of God says God speaks. Isnt it interesting that before Isaiah hears Gods plan and purpose for his life, he first must deal with the sin issue? If there are unconfessed sins in your life, dont expect to hear from God. Dont expect to know His plan. You first deal with the sin issue. Then, I can hear and then God will speak. God says (Isaiah 6:8, page 681), Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? He doesnt specifically call Isaiah. He doesnt say, Isaiah, will you go? He simply puts the question out there, Who can I send? Who will be my mouthpiece? Who will go to my people and share my message? Isaiah responds by saying, Here am I. Send me! Was Isaiahs confidence in himself? Not at all. He just said, I should just die right now because I am impure. Isaiahs confidence was in God because if God was sending him, God would equip him. Because God had touched him, he knew he could carry out whatever God had called him to do. So he says, Here am I. Send me! Just a few moments earlier, Isaiah was saying, Im a clinker brick. Im scarred. Im flawed. I have defects. Thats [the topic of] our series: a clinker brick, a brick that is damaged and tossed aside, not fit for construction. Whats more miraculous than Isaiah saying, Here I am. Send me! is God saying to Isaiah, Go! God is saying, In spite of your impurity, in spite of your fallenness and your sinfulness, Isaiah, I will use you. God will use us if we are broken, if we are humble before Him. God will use us in all of our defects, all of our impurities for His glory and for His purposes. Thats our introduction this morning. I notice some of you are tuning out when I introduce the series. I did it the same week every week, so I thought I would introduce it a little differently this week. So weve looked at a different example of a clinker brick, a different example in church history of a clinker brick, and then we talk about how it applies to our lives. This morning were talking about whether we are Excuse Makers or Difference Makers in the Kingdom. Id like you to turn, if you would please, to Luke 14. Speaking of excuses, I dont think anybody hears more excuses than police officers do. Police officers pull you over for speeding or going through a light. Theyve heard pretty much every excuse in the book when they pull drivers over. I heard a story about an officer who pulled a guy over for speeding. It was the end of his shift, and he was in a pretty good mood. It was the last thing hed have to do for the night before he signed out. He pulled the guy over and said, Hey, listen. Tell me one I havent heard before, and Ill let you off the hook. The guy said, Well, officer, 20 years ago, a police officer took away my wife, stole my wife from me. I saw you in my rearview mirror with that siren, and I thought maybe you were bringing her back. Then the officer said, Well, have a good day, sir. He gave him his license back and left. We come up with excuses. Ive heard some duzies over the years as to why people have missed church, havent been in church for awhile, or stopped ministering. I wont say any of them because you might have said one to me, and I dont want to embarrass you. Right now, you guys are playing tape really fast and thinking of excuses you might have given. Excuses really are not so much lies as they are polite ways of not telling the truth. For instance, the Bears quarterback Rex Grossman loses to Green Bay. He speaks at the press conference, and he says, Yeah, I didnt prepare for the game. The game didnt mean anything. Its New Years Day, a lot of things going on. I should have planned; I should have been better. I wont do that next week. [He just gave] a bunch of excuses instead of getting up there and saying, The Packers played better. They played like a team on a mission. This could be Brett Favres last game, so those guys played like warriors, and we came out flat. They were a better team today. That was the truth, but thats not what he said. He gave excuses, right? Some of you cant believe your ears right now, but Im just speaking the truth. I remember a woman named Sandy Cane who was leading a church musical, a drama musical. She wanted a quote from me. I was just a young buck. I was in my early 20s, and I was thinking, Wow, somebody wants a quote from me. Somebody is actually going to get up in a drama and say, Pastor Jeff Williams says… Thats kind of cool. Then I promptly forgot about it until the day of the performance. She said, Remember I need that quote. I thought, Oh, yeah, the quote. Okay, now I have to write something down. I took out my pen and thought for a moment. I wrote down something profoundly stupid, something dumb like it had a youth theme to it. It was [something like], The youth of tomorrow or youth of today… It was something ignorant that was not in the slightest bit memorable. I handed it to her, and I said, Heres my quote. Hours later she came back. She said, Hey…yeah. Hey thanks for turning in that quote, but we did get a lot of quotes. The performance is going to go long, and we just dont have a lot of time, so were going to have to eliminate your quote. It was really good, and thanks for sharing that. I was thinking, Okay. I knew exactly what she was saying. Obviously my quote would have taken about three seconds to read. Why didnt she just come out and say, You know, you didnt put any thought into your quote. Your quote was very sub-par and not in the least bit memorable, so theres no reason to share it with anybody at any time-ever-in the history of the human race. But, she just did it in a nice way. Some of you, maybe in high school or more recently, somebody has asked you out on a date, and youve come up with a polite excuse as to why you cant go. We use excuses all the time. Were going to see some chart toppers right here in Luke 14. Were going to see some real excuse makers here. Jesus is staying at the home of a prominent Pharisee. The man is powerful; he is wealthy; and he has invited Jesus into his home as a guest. A lot of VIPs are there, and theyre not Jesus friends. Theyre watching Jesus with a skeptical eye. Theyre waiting for Him to slip up. Theyre waiting for a way to entrap Him with His words or His actions. They were talking about banquets and the Kingdom, and one of the men reclined at the table and gave this impromptu outburst. He said, Its going to be great! Were in the Kingdom of Heaven and partaking in the feast of God! Hes saying, Wont it be great at the end of the ages when we sit down in the messianic reign and share a meal with God? Jesus uses that outburst as a teaching moment and starts to talk about the Kingdom. We pick up the story in [Luke] 14:16 (page 1034 of pew Bibles), Jesus replied: A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. So these men and women had already received invitations. I dont throw many parties because I dont like the feeling of people calling and canceling at the last minute. Because of that, I only have one party a year, and thats for my staff-and they pretty much have to come. I know somebody is going to come. So he had already given out the RSVPs, regrets only. These are people who had already accepted the invitation and had put it down on their calendar to come to the banquet. At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, Come, for everything is now ready. You said you were going to be there, so we bought food for you. Theres a spot on the table that has your name on the card. You committed to being there; youre expected to be there; we have prepared for you to be there; and Im sending out this notice, this invite that is like the courtesy phone call. This is like the reminder that says, Hey, remember, Friday night at 6 oclock. Be there! So the servant goes out and reminds people. Verse 18 says, But they all alike began to make excuses… Theyre not giving reasons, because sometimes there are valid reasons why we cant do something. Other times, there are excuses. Last Sunday, some of you came from far away and live on country roads where there was drifting. [And for others] it was dangerous and hazardous to drive, so you stayed home. That was a reason. Some of you who live two blocks away looked out the window and saw the cold and wind and said, Im going back to bed. That was an excuse. Thats an example between the two: reason vs. excuse. He comes out and says, Remember, we have that banquet today. Youre invited! He comes to the first guy in Verse 18 and says, Yeah, that banquet. I wanted to go to that, see, but I just bought this field, and I must go see it. Please send my regrets. I must go see it. Is it going somewhere? The field that you just bought, why do you need to see it now? Has it changed since you bought it? Does it look the same? Why the urgency? Why the rush to go see this field you bought? Cant you eat first and then go see the field? We dont know what the behind-the-scene story is here. Maybe the guy just gives bad banquets. Maybe there is just a bad cook. Brenda had a family member that would invite us over to eat, and it was awful! It was horrendous! She could not cook a lick, not even a frozen pizza. Twice, we went over there for frozen pizza. The first time she burned it to a crisp, and the second time she burned it to a crisp. I think we ended up eating it the second time. You had to hammer and chisel. It was like Jell-O that would not come off the spoon, no matter how many times you shook it. When Aunt Blanch would invite us over, it was like, Aw, gee, Aunt Blanch, I have to clip my nails. How many of you have ever given a flimsy excuse to somebody and thought, They have to see through that. Thats pretty weak. Usually theyre just right off the top of your head. Thats what I understand some of these to be. The second person, in Verse 19, says, I have just bought five yoke of oxen… Yeah, that banquet sounds like fun, but Im on my way to try them out, so can you send my regrets? So you bought the oxen, and now youre going to try them out? Isnt that like saying, Hey, I bought a car, and I cant come to your house to eat because I have to go give it a test drive? Isnt the time to give the test drive before you buy it? Isnt the time to try out the oxen before you made the purchase? And where are the oxen going? Why is there such a big hurry that you have to check out the oxen you bought right now? The third guy, in Verse 20, said, Boy, yeah, that banquet, thats really good. I know I committed to go to it, but I just got married. I cant come. He didnt mean this was his wedding day. He meant he was a newlywed. Youre going to be together for the rest of your lives-can you spare a meal to go to this guys place who was prepared for you? No. Even though were going to be together for the next 40, 50, 60 years, I dont have time to go to your banquet because I have to… This is the only guy who is half-way legitimate. Maybe, his wife had laid down the law, right? Maybe there were things he had to do around the house that day. This guy could be legit. The other two…not a chance. We laugh at these guys, but the truth is, we are these guys. The truth of the matter is: Theyre clinker bricks. Every excuse they gave had to do with themselves. [They were] putting something [first] in their lives that was more important than the commitment they made to a friend. They didnt think about his feelings. They didnt think about the expense he had gone through in buying that meal or preparing that meal. They didnt think about how disappointed he would be when they committed to come and didnt show up because their needs were more important. Thats us. Were clinker bricks too. You and I have all made excuses as to why we cant do what God has called us to do; go where Hes called us to go; give what Hes called us to give; say what Hes called us to say; share what Hes called us to share. Were clinker bricks. Im painting a picture right now. After the service this morning, Im going to come back over here, and Im going to paint this entire canvas black. Im not going to take the time to do it right now, but you can watch me [later]. As soon as we say Amen, Im heading over here. Im going to cover this entire canvas with black paint. This represents the darkness thats in our souls. This represents this clinker brickness-this new word weve coined-that is a part of all of us. Next week, at some point during the service, youre going [to be thinking], That transformed into something good, something beautiful. We promise you… Ill be kind of glad because Im tired of getting paint all over my hands and my clothes. Thats coming up next week. That reminds us of who we are. That reminds us of our sin nature, of our fallenness-were clinker bricks. The question we pose is this: Are you an excuse maker or are you a difference maker? A difference maker says, It doesnt matter what the obstacles are, were going to overcome it. Were going to get it done. As we form our team for our new building, we want to have people who are difference makers saying, Yeah, we have obstacles. We have work, but were going to get this thing done. No matter what endeavor you entertain, no matter what endeavor you join together to accomplish, you want people on that team who are going to say, Were going to get this done. Were going to meet challenges, and were going to overcome those challenges. We may not know how, but we know we will. You dont want a team of excuse makers. Excuse makers, as soon as they run into conflict or obstacles, quit. We cant do it. Why? Because of that. If that werent there, we could do it. But because thats there, we better stop. If everybody in the world were excuse makers, nothing would get done. The same thing is true in the church. If were excuse makers, things arent going to be done because as soon as they get difficult, were going to quit. Were not going to try to think outside the box, go outside of the lines. Were just going to say, Oh, we cant do it. The great commission. Now, look at the servant here. The servant is sent out, but he doesnt make excuses. This guy gets the job done. He comes back with the news, and the owner of the house is very angry. He says, Go out quickly into the streets and the alleys of the town. Bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame, folks like Rich Mullins was talking about in this clip earlier. He says, Sir, the servant said what you have ordered has been done. There is still more room. This guy didnt say, Well, what if they dont come? Look at the success weve had in the past. What makes us think its going to be any better? He doesnt do any of that. He does what he is told. He comes back and he says, There is more room. The master told his servant, Go out into the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full. I tell you not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet. Theologically speaking, Jesus is talking here, but the invitation was first given to the Jews. Many of them received, and many rejected. Jesus said then the message will be taken to all people, and all will be invited. It was a servants job to go out into the world and take that message, that invitation of the king, and say, You are invited. Friends, that servant is the church. You and I have been called by God to take this message of the Gospel to the world-no excuses. No excuses. Every generation has had its challenges in church history, in the Gospel, as far as carrying out the great commission. It seems like God always raises up some people who refuse to make excuses and say, Lets get the job done. I want to tell you this morning about a man by the name of William Carey. William Carey lived in the late 1700s, early 1800s. William Carey was born in England, and he was a shoe cobbler. While he would perform his vocation, he would learn. He was a multi-tasker, so he would learn languages [while he was working on shoes]. In fact, he became the master of many languages. God would use that when He would send William Carey to the country of India. In India, William would labor for seven years before he lead the first person to Christ. He would translate the Bible into 40 different languages and dialects. Can you imagine that? This man had a brilliant mind. He was also a clinker brick. He became so consumed with his ministry and translation and pastoring that he neglected his family. He had four small boys. What were told in church history is they were obnoxious, rude, had no manners, no structure, and no discipline at all. It was co-workers on the field in India who literally raised William Careys boys because he didnt do it. He was a clinker brick. He was a bad parent, but he was an incredible missionary. He is called the Founder of Modern Missions-a very important person in church history. There were a lot of excuses being told as to why we werent getting the job done around the world. People were saying things like you know, it costs a lot of money. Its very dangerous. You have to sail the oceans to get to some of these countries. When you get there, the indigenous people are often hostile not only to our message, but to us. Besides that, there are language barriers. Sometimes we dont speak their languages. They dont have the Bible in their language. Some climates are cold; some climates are hot. There are all these problems and difficulties we have to overcome, so its much easier to just not go. But William Carey was a difference maker and not an excuse maker. His response to the one who said, Well, they dont have a Bible in their language was Well, write one. If they talked about that climate being unsafe or that group of people being hostile, hed say, What about Paul? What about the groups he ministered to? What about the times he was in riot and shipwreck? Well, its expensive. Sometimes its cold and its hot… William Carey wrote a book. The book was entitled, in 1792, this catchy little title-easy to remember. It was called An Inquiry into the Obligations of Christians to use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens. Easy, thats what it was called. That was literally the title of the book. In the book he says something very poignant. He says, Listen, you Christian merchants out there who have money, how did you get that money? Some of you put your life at risk to cross treacherous seas. Some of you faced hostile people to mine for gold. Some of you went into unfamiliar climates in Africa, for instance, and faced heat to sell, to trade, and to buy into a choir. If youre going to go all around the globe and go to all different kinds of cultures and all different kinds of languages for the sake of a buck, how much more should we do it for the sake of a soul and the God who has called us to do it because Hes given us that command? He laid down His life for us. Whoa! Ive read the book. Its not a long read. He talks about the history of missions, how we go about missions. He talks in one chapter about charts, all the countries, all the people groups who havent heard, where the Gospel has been preached. Here are how many people who are not Christians? Then in Chapter 4, he blows out all the excuses. In Chapter 5, he talks about using their culture, their languages, to get the job done, just like as a church we believe and practice. He says, Use their culture. Use their language. Love them. Heres how you reach them for Christ. William Carey became the Father of Modern Missions. Ive been talking a lot about Pastor Sean Christensen lately. I said I hope our staff doesnt get jealous because Ive talked so much about him lately. Just to let our staff know, should you ever choose to go overseas full-time to a place like Haiti, Ill talk about you a lot too. Look at the things Pastor Sean has to do. Number one, look what he is giving up. Hes selling his home. He is leaving his job, his family, and his friends, and his country. Hes taking his four children and his wife, and he is going to a completely different culture-the voodoo capital of the world, Haiti. [This country is] the poorest of the poor. Then he has to face the challenge of raising the support; $5,400 a month is what he has to raise. Thats a lot of money. You say, Why does it cost $5,400 to live in Haiti? Its the poorest country in the world. You can live there for $2,000 a year. Right, you could if you wanted to live on a dirt floor with no air conditioning, no electricity, no plumbing, no running water, no car, all of that. Hes already giving up a lot. Lets not put him in that kind of a situation. Lets have him at least have electricity, plumbing, running water, a refrigerator, and a car for goodness sakes. So not only does he have the financial challenges, but he has to learn two languages: Creole and French. He has to learn them, not just to communicate the basics to function in society. He has to learn French well enough to teach local pastors the Bible. Thats going to be his job. Hes going to be teaching the Haitian pastors, so they can teach their congregation. Many of them could not go to school. What you could hear from Sean is a lot of excuses, couldnt you? I cant go… You could think of any one of those things, and you could run with it, but he is saying, Im going to get it done. With Gods help, the help from my family and friends, the church, were going to get this done. Hes at 10 percent, so he has 90 percent to go. Hes just starting out here. It puts some of our excuses to shame, doesnt it? He wants to make a difference in the world for Christ. Do you want to make a difference in the world for Christ? We are either-we talked about this a few weeks ago-the ones sent, or we are senders. We have to recognize this is our mission. Were going to watch a song [video clip] by Rich Mullins called The Other Side of the World as he sings in Guatemala City (lyrics can be read at http://www.kidbrothers.net/wohsoe.html#tosotw). Its a song you might not be as familiar with, but I want you to listen to the lyrics as he talks about it being an ominous job. There is so much to do, yet there is optimism in his voice. There is a can-do spirit behind his words. Lets listen to the song, The Other Side of the World. We as a church want to be difference makers in our world for Christ. We shared several weeks ago about World War II, how it was a very different war than the one we are facing now. We tend to just listen on the news, watch, or read articles, but unless we have somebody [we love] in the war, other than the price of gas for instance, our lives are not affected in a personal way. There is no sacrifice we are making unless we have somebody in the war. World War II was not like that. World War II was seen as everybodys war. The home front was just as important as the front line. The conservation, the sacrifice, the war bonds, Rosie the Riveter, woman going back to work-converting factories into places that made weapons, financing the war: that was vital to the success of what America was doing in Europe in fighting Hitler and the Nazis and imperious forces. We saw this as our battle. We couldnt have won it without the home front. In regards to missions, we have to see it as our fight. It is a fight; it is a battle, but its our battle. We have to say to Pastor Sean-more than just patting him on the back-Hey, good luck with that! Youre leaving everybody you love and going off to Haiti! Best of luck to you! We have to do more than that. Parents in our church, Jim and Lita Powers, their son went off to Thailand, left a prominent church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to go and minister to the orphans in Thailand. Now he is giving 100 percent of his time and energy to reach the people of Pakistan. Talk about dangerous missions. Talk about a land that needs the Gospel. He is there ministering. We have to do more with Todd Powers than say, Hey, good luck Todd! Our D.R. team: we have friends and some people in church we know, maybe even some family members, who are taking a week of their time this summer. Theyre leaving their jobs, leaving all of you, boarding on a plane and going off to an unknown country to minister and love people in the name of Christ. [They are] going to minister to lepers, orphans, and children. Theyre sharing the love of Christ to the people who are hurting. We have to do more than just say, Hey, good luck to you. We have to be behind them in our prayers, our giving, and any way we can use our talents and resources to make it happen. This team, as I met with them last week in our meeting, we dont know how were going to get everything we need. We dont know how were going to do everything we need to do, but its a journey of faith, and were not offering any excuses. Were saying, Were going to get it done, but we need your help to do that. Every two years, our church embarks on a major missions outreach. This year, its the Dominican Republic. Every two years, we take an offering to benefit missions. This is not giving to an agency. This is not giving to a nameless, faceless group or something where we put money into a pot and really dont know whats done with it. This offering will benefit Pastor Sean Christensen and his ministry to Haiti. It will benefit Todd Powers in Pakistan. It will benefit our church, the folks who are going to the Dominican Republic. Im going to ask our ushers to come forward at this time, and well receive that love offering for missions. If youre not ready or not prepared, just let us know if you want to bring something by on Monday or Tuesday. We just want to bless these people we know and love in a tangible way. This is not the be-all end-all, but it is part. It is a practical way we can participate in world missions. These dollars will send people you know and love to people you dont know. I hope even though you dont know them, you still love them and reach them for Christ.
