The central theme discussed in the podcast revolves around the critical importance of addressing bad behavior in the workplace to foster psychological safety. Robyne emphasizes that allowing negative actions to go unchecked creates an environment where individuals feel unsafe, ultimately leading to diminished trust and collaboration among team members. Furthermore, the dialogue explores the multifaceted nature of stress, challenging the common perception that stress is solely detrimental. Instead, it posits that understanding and managing stress can transform it into an ally, thereby enhancing resilience and well-being. Robyne also highlights the importance of interpersonal connections, underscoring that loneliness can have dire consequences, often surpassing the impact of poor dietary choices on health. The conversation culminates in practical strategies for leaders and HR professionals to cultivate an inclusive atmosphere, where feedback is delivered constructively and junior team members are empowered to voice their perspectives first, thus reinforcing a culture of belonging. The discussion revolves around the essential concept of psychological safety in the workplace, with Robyne articulating the detrimental effects of tolerating poor behavior among team members. They assert that when bad behavior is left unaddressed, it erodes trust and safety, creating an environment where individuals are hesitant to voice their opinions or concerns. The conversation emphasizes the responsibility of leaders to cultivate a culture of accountability, where behaviors that undermine safety are confronted rather than ignored. Robyne's insights serve as a call to action for organizations to prioritize psychological safety, suggesting that establishing clear behavioral expectations is crucial for fostering a supportive and open workplace. As the dialogue progresses, the focus shifts to the often-misunderstood nature of stress. Robyne presents a compelling argument that challenges the traditional view of stress as a purely negative experience. They highlight that stress, when managed effectively, can be an invaluable asset. Their research indicates that understanding the physiological responses to stress can empower individuals to utilize it constructively. By reframing stress as a potential ally rather than an adversary, individuals can enhance their resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. The episode concludes with practical advice on how individuals and organizations can enhance their resilience and well-being. Robyne advocates for proactive strategies, such as ensuring sufficient sleep and incorporating regular movement throughout the day. They stress that these foundational practices are key to maintaining emotional and cognitive health, enabling individuals to respond to stressors more effectively. By prioritizing these well-being strategies, organizations can create a culture that supports both individual and collective resilience, ultimately contributing to a more productive and harmonious workplace.Takeaways: Psychological safety is significantly compromised when negative behaviors are ignored or tolerated within a team environment. Addressing bad behavior is crucial for maintaining a culture of psychological safety and ensuring that all team members feel secure. The concept of stress is often misunderstood; it can be leveraged positively when individuals understand and manage their stress responses effectively. Creating psychological safety involves not only addressing behaviors but also fostering an environment where constructive feedback is provided thoughtfully and respectfully. This week I am sharing a fun session I did with the incredible Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe at the EPIC conference in December. We presented our top 10 tactics for an EPIC 2025. After each of the tactics that we shared we opened it up for Q&A from the crowd and that took the conversation to another level completely. This is a long podcast but I know you will get loads of brilliant insights that you can put into practice right away. Enjoy the episode!
What if resilience is not just about bouncing back but also about building forward? Dr. Robyne invites us to rethink resilience as a set of daily practices, not a fixed trait, and she brings decades of research and a deeply personal story to the conversation. Through insights on nervous system regulation, the transformative power of hope, and the role of humor, she illustrates how small, intentional shifts can make a big difference. Whether you're navigating personal challenges or seeking to foster a stronger sense of community, this episode offers practical, heartfelt advice to help you show up for the hard parts of life with grace and strength. Key Takeaways: Resilience isn't something you're born with—it's built through small, consistent actions. Learn how "sweating the small stuff well" lays a foundation for navigating life's challenges. Understanding that tough moments are often temporary can help you embrace "learning shifts" and see challenges as opportunities for growth. True resilience includes connection—finding your "3 a.m. people" and leaning into the support of others can make the journey less overwhelming. Hope is a muscle that can be strengthened through positive habits, such as seeking joy-filled content, practicing gratitude, and surrounding yourself with uplifting influences. Humor isn't just entertainment—it's a physiological tool that helps manage stress, release tension, and create moments of reprieve during difficult times. This holiday season has been….stressful. And if it feels like you're feeling more holiday stress this year than your male partner, you probably are. A 2023 poll from Yahoo News and YouGov found that 43% of women said their level of stress and anxiety increases during the holidays (compared to 32% of men). Resiliency and stress expert Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe shares her top tips for entering the New Year with less stress. Because when we're less stressed we have more space to manage our needs (including our financial needs), and we can start planning for the future. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Why the holidays are so stressful 06:31 Redefining resiliency 9:01 The five pillars of resilience 20:31 A prescription for stress recovery 33:46 Mailbag Question 1: What is a safe harbor account? 36:01 Mailbag Question 2: I'm 60 years old. Should I convert my traditional IRA into a Roth IRA? TAKEAWAYS: Resilience is often misunderstood. It's not just about being born with it but building it through lived experiences and relationships. Stress itself isn't the enemy. It's the overexposure to stress (distress) that harms us. Research suggests that swearing (when not directed at others) can improve pain tolerance. Dr. Robyn Hanley-Dafoe joins The Two Jess(es) for an authentic and vulnerable conversation about survival, and how equipped we as human beings are, to do hard things. Robyne did one of the hardest things she will ever have to do, and kicked her way out of a sinking car in the middle of a frozen lake during a blizzard outside of Ontario, Canada when she was 16 years old. It was in those final moments that Dr. Robyne decided life was worth fighting for, and it changed the trajectory of her life, laying the groundwork for her research around resiliency and why people really can do hard things.
