In this inspiring episode of ScaleUp Radio, Kevin Brent sits down with Hayley Peacock, a pioneering educator and entrepreneur who is reshaping the way we think about learning, leadership, and scaling purpose-driven businesses. From a single mother navigating life on benefits to building multi-million pound education ventures, Hayley's story is as powerful as it is practical. She is the founder of Little Barn Owls Nursery Group, with five thriving settings across West Sussex, and the trailblazing Atelia 21 Future School, offering inquiry-based education for children aged 4 to 16. Her approach is grounded in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, viewing children as capable, curious learners who can shape their own educational journeys. We cover Hayley's entrepreneurial evolution, her innovative educational methods, and the challenges she's faced scaling both culture and operations across her organisations.

Man, age 29, was taken into custody and accused with vandalizing a monument for victims of a school massacre by placing dead animals on the site. The Broward County Sheriff's Office reports that a crossing guard discovered a dead duck with its chest cavity sliced open on a bench in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Memorial Garden on July 20. According to reports, a dead raccoon was discovered on a school bench the day after, on July 21, and a deputy found a dead opossum on July 31. The Sheriff's Office claims that on July 30 at around 11 p.m., they used security footage to see a white Nissan with black rims drive up toward the memorial. A male driver was spotted getting out of the car and strolling up to the passenger side. It is said that he visited the memorial before leaving in his car. According to the Sheriff's Office, a deputy observed the identical Nissan on July 31 and conducted a traffic stop. Robert Mondragon, the driver, allegedly informed the deputy that he liked "the metal and blood scent that come from the dead animal" when asked why he had feathers and blood on the front passenger side floorboard of his vehicle. The Sheriff's Office claimed they learned that Mondragon had a "disturbing fixation with mass school shootings" after investigating the incident and discovering that he had purposely placed the dead animals on the memorial for the Parkland school shooting. Reportedly, authorities recovered his phone and discovered images of Mondragon holding the dead duck with its breast cavity cut open and an image of a dead raccoon on the floorboard of his vehicle. Police say that "Mondragon's facial tattoos match those of Tate Langdon, the character from 'American Horror Story' based on the Columbine High School shooting." Authorities searching Mondragon reportedly discovered writings and internet searches related to school shootings, methods for breaching steel doors, mass shootings, pipe bombs, and "slang words for killing officers." Mondragon allegedly followed the identical route that the MSD school shooter did on February 14, 2018—from Marjory Stoneman Douglas School to Walmart—two weeks before the end of the 2021-2022 school year. According to the Sheriff's Office, Mondragon was detained and charged with removing or disfiguring a tomb or monument, violating probation for battery and indecent exposure, and violating a risk protection order. He is still being held without bond. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! FUTURE SCHOOL is a framework on how to work with young people so their voices and opinions are heard, valued, and incorporated into the decision making processes. Today I am speaking with Michael FD Young, Emeritus Professor of Sociology of Curriculum at the UCL Institute of Education. Michael has been a towering figure in the field of Sociology of Education for over five decades. He has written and edited many books throughout his career, including Knowledge and Control (1971), Bringing Knowledge Back In (20080) and Knowledge and the Future School (2014) - to name just a few. You may have noticed a theme in those book titles - Michael writes about knowledge a lot. Hence the title of the podcast. A few weeks ago I met Michael for an enjoyable lunch in Russell Square, sitting under the trees with a lasagne and a beer and discussing life, the universe and everything. To my delight, Michael agreed that it would be a good idea to join me for an extended conversation about his remarkable career to date. As always, this was an absolutely fascinating conversation. Outdoor education is what Brett lives for! She is the program director for the Outdoor Education program at Future School of Fort Smith in Arkansas. The small school is a non-profit, public, charter school. Her program focuses on removing barriers of entry to the outdoors for 10-12th grade students from low income or otherwise unstable backgrounds. A large percentage of her students are BIPOC and/or LGBT+. Most of our her students have never set foot in a natural area despite living in the natural state. As you know, one of the largest barriers of entry is cost, so we completely remove that. Our program is completely free for our kids. They get equipment, qualified instruction, and transportation to all of our activities. Her school has a three pronged approach to Outdoor Education. They start our program off by zeroing in and developing communication and leadership skills, then blend Outdoor Recreation activities with classroom lessons about public lands, ethics, and natural resources. In the classroom they focus hard on public land management and administration, legislation going on around public lands, Leave No Trace Ethics, and stewardship. They also have a unit on how the Outdoor Industry is a driving force in economics and what kinds of jobs are available in the industry.Support the show (https://www.herbrotherhood.com)

Mattias sits down for a conversation about mnemonics, biohacking, self-improvement, minimalism, and his thoughts on improving the school system. The first half of the episode is about learning and the human brain: How to think in pictures (the way the brain processes information fastest) The benefits of thinking pictorially (“give your brain folders”) How to learn a new area fast What to do when studying and feeling confused How to go from big picture to granular details How to become fluent in languages—and why we teach languages inefficiently in school Here are the questions asked during the second half, about the school system: Are we being dumbed down? What does the new school system look like? Should we improve upon the existing one by making modifications, or should we do away with it and create a new one from scratch? What makes Mattias optimistic about the future? Which skills will become more valuable (or hard to replace) in the future? Please enjoy this conversation with Mattias.
