When Starr isn't advocating for students and educators, she is a mom and partner looking for the next adventure. During our conversation, we talked about … assessments. In fact, Starr pointed out that we cannot expect major risk-taking in high stakes situations. And this goes for both our staff and our students. Starr shared stories of how she developed spaces for students to serve as cocreators of the curriculum in her space and was then investigated when students came to her class but skipped others. She shares the idea that our modern approaches disrespects and dishonors the natural learning process and questions why it seems that the love for learning happens to begin diminishing around the same grade level when these high stakes assessments are implemented. Laura Warnier, GoStudentMy guest for today is Laura Warnier, the Chief Growth Officer for the online tutoring platform GoStudent, which is (as of this recording) the only EdTech unicorn in Europe. She oversees partnerships, marketing, international expansion and breaking down silos while boosting collaboration for the company. In this fast-paced conversation, Laura and I discuss:
I love entrepreneurs. They take risks, seize opportunities, invent and innovate, and create abundance for all of us. But I am especially in awe of education entrepreneurs. They plunge into a highly-regulated sector with huge barriers to entry in an effort to challenge the schooling status quo and expand learning options for families. Manisha Snoyer is one such education entrepreneur. She was a teacher and tutor turned startup founder who has launched various programs and platforms designed to make it easier for parents to personalize their children's education. Her new startup, Modulo.app, prioritizes child-directed learning while enabling parents to discover resources and tools to help their children grow and flourish.
Marjorie Cass is the Founder and CEO of ALEE, an EdTech Startup that provides educators with tools and resources to teach literacy using whole books featuring classic works of literature. She joins host Mike Palmer in a conversation about her journey beginning as an educator, rising through the ranks as a literacy coach and administrator before deciding to go to business school at MIT where ALEE began to germinate. From there, we learn what it's been like launching eight months ago while expanding on the significance and complexity of our growing literacy challenge in the US education system. Marjorie explains how she is designing ALEE to provide teachers with what they need to provide scaffolding and support to the essential relationship between a teacher, a student, and a great book. We touch on the challenges of teaching in difficult times and the fear teachers are experiencing when dealing with important but difficult works of literature to teach reading these days. We explore how best to use technology to power the solution without losing sight of the central role of the teacher in the literacy equation. Marjorie shares the higher-level skills and thinking associated with the whole book as opposed to excerpts or synthetic passages that are increasingly used in literacy education. It's a thought-provoking exploration of entrepreneurship, literacy, and the power of teaching through great books. Don't miss it! Subscribe to Trending in Education wherever you get your podcasts.
Technology shepherds in fundamental structural changes which can be integral to achieving monumental improvements in productivity and advancement. Used to support both teaching and learning, technology instils classrooms with digital learning tools, expands course offerings, experiences, and learning materials; supports learning 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; builds 21st century skills; increases student engagement and motivation; and accelerates learning. Technology also has the power to transform teaching by ushering in a new model of connected teaching. This model links teachers to their students and to professional content, resources, and systems to help them improve their own instruction and personalize learning. Praba Soundararajan is a Neuroscientist and a Children's book author of a STEM series. He is also the Founder & CEO at Boon-dah, an EdTech Startup company located in Tampa, Florida. Growing up in India, Praba was a reluctant reader during his childhood and much of his earlier part of adulthood. After moving to North America to pursue an education in Neuroscience, he discovered why reading had been such a chore. He was a visual learner—and much of the material he had been given was not presented in a manner that was conducive to his learning style. With this knowledge, He started reading short stories, science, and engineering books that were pictorial. He then began to write stories for children with the hope of inspiring other young reluctant readers Praba created Pumpus the Pumpkin and his pals to teach STEM through storytelling using characters relatable to children. His hands-on approach to curriculum makes his series particularly interesting to students of all learning styles, including the reluctant readers like he had been himself. Stay tuned after the show for our takeaways. Shreyaan Daga was just 15 years old when he started an edtech startup called Online Live Learning (OLL) – which is a marketplace for teachers to offer live courses to students on everything from graphic designing to yoga to guitar to astrology to astronomy. In this video, Shreyaan talks about discovering his passion, starting up as a young entrepreneur and building a profitable edtech startup. Introduction From selling paintings in 4th grade to lending money in 7th grade Journey of self-discovery and entrepreneurship Turning pandemic into an opportunity Moving from free courses to a paid business model Shreyaan on the importance of learning Future of Online Live Learning From selling paintings in 4th grade to lending money in 7th grade: Before Shreyaans even started his latest venture Online Live Learning, he had been on a path to entrepreneurship since he was 10 years old. He started selling paintings online to his friends and family when he was in 4th grade. It grew into an online marketplace for paintings when his friends using the platform to sell their paintings as well. Later in 7th grade, he started lending money to his schoolmates at high-interest rates and he even learnt about investing in the stock market on his own. Journey of self-discovery and entrepreneurship: Fascinated by the story of Gautam Buddha, Shreyaan went on his own journey of self-discovery when he decided to leave everything he owned behind. He got on his bicycle and started donating everything he owned until he was left with just his bicycle, which he gave to a kid on the street. Fortunately, he was discovered by his friend and was taken home. But this experience made him realise that instead of focusing on materialistic things, people should focus on dreaming big and spending their lives in the pursuit of those dreams. The only way he thought we can do that is through education. That's why he decided to start Online Live Learning. Turning pandemic into an opportunity: He discussed the idea for Online Live Learning with his parents and hired a team of IIM graduates to help him build the platform. During the pandemic, teachers were finding it hard to make money, students had a lot of time on their hand and schools were still figuring things out. That's when Shreyaan launched Online Live Learning to help teachers make some money through courses and provide a platform for students to continue their learning. Moving from free courses to a paid business model: Initially, they were offering the courses for free but with their initial investment of Rs 2 lakh running out, they realised that it wasn't a sustainable model and people don't really value free courses. So, they started charging money for the classes and started building a stable revenue source. Their growth has been organic from the beginning but things started to slow down when schools were opening up once again. Shreyaan on the importance of learning and dreaming big: He believes that the first time we are introduced to a subject, it's called awareness. But learning happens when you start connecting and applying those concepts in the real world. Future of Online Live Learning: Their platform is already offering courses ranging across multiple fields ranging from graphic designing to astronomy to astrology to machine learning. But he and his team want to build Online Live Learning into a school for the world where students can learn any skill they chose. They now have an ambitious goal of getting 1 billion students on their platform by 2025.

“Racism is expensive, sexism is expensive, ableism is expensive. Gen Z is going to force us to care.” For the first time, we have two guests joining us on Bring It In. Chisa Egbelu and Kayla Michèle are the co-founders of PeduL, a marketplace where corporations can diversify their workforce with scholarships. PeduL, which is based here in Newark, is the one-stop shop for scholarships. PeduL's mission is to ensure that all students have equal access to academic and professional opportunities. It was founded on the belief that investing resources into society—especially our youth—will create a more sustainable and prosperous world. Chisa and Kayla joined forces while they were classmates at Rutgers and soon became a power team. PeduL started out as a crowdfunding platform in 2018, but Chisa and Kayla realized that crowdfunding inherently assumes students have access to a network with money. So they went back to the drawing board and came up with their universal application for scholarships where students can apply to thousands of local and national scholarships at one time through one application. And that's what PeduL does. As fellow Newark business-owners and changemakers in their community, Chisa and Kayla had a lot of powerful insights to share when they sat down with Sam Caucci on this episode of Bring It In. They talked about everything from what's preventing companies from being as equitable as they could be to how we can create sustainable progress in our workforce and in our society.

Today's guest on The EdTech Startup Show is Dan Carroll, Chief Product Officer at Clever. As a teacher and tech director, Dan saw first-hand how data obstacles were quickly becoming the biggest barriers to innovation in education. Before co-founding Clever, Dan joined Teach for America and taught science at STRIVE Preparatory Schools in Denver before becoming their director of data and technology. Clever brings all K12 applications into one secure portal and provides single sign-on for everyone in the district. During this episode, Dan and I discuss How Clever can help transform minutes of logging into minutes of learning by taking something complicated and tricky and making it dead simple, in addition to that, also making it safer, and more secure. The early stages of Clever, and how Dan and his co-founders made building relationships and improving security their top priorities How they made the observation early on that when people are adopting something new, it's not just about the technology, but also about the people behind it. Dan's approach to being a leader as a person, and as a company in the ed-tech industry. Clevers' open-sourcing privacy policies and terms of service, and encouraging other applications within Clever to adopt using their policies as a starting point. Why EdTech can be competitive because of limited resources, but it can also be an incredibly collaborative space because ultimately everyone wants to learn and help students have an amazing education How Clever is partnering with companies like Zoom to help provide teachers support right now. Why Ed Tech purchases need to have data to measure if the tool is helping to meet classroom goals Clever's tool for EdTech analytics, and how it's helping classrooms discover what is most effective for their students. On this episode of the EdTech Startup Show, my guest is Graham Forman, founder of Edovate Capital. Note: this episode features our full conversation. Previously, I shared three highlights of this conversation. You can read and listen to those here: Why does Graham do seed-stage investing in EdTech? How does Graham identify successful education entrepreneurs? How do you grow an EdTech Startup? Graham answers Graham is the founder and managing director of Edovate Capital. He's spent his career in education, entrepreneurship, and investing. The first phase of his career was in education policy where he worked for U.S. Senator Paul Simon and former California State Assemblyman, Senator, and Community College Chancellor Jack Scott. He worked with school leaders addressing some of their biggest challenges in leading large school systems. The second phase of his career was as a startup operator serving as head of sales, marketing, business development, and customer success in impact-focused SaaS companies serving education. His last role included leading sales and business development for Netchemia. During his tenure, the company grew to serve more than 2,400 school districts and 20,000 schools in the U.S. with a best-in-class talent management suite. Netchemia was acquired by People Admin (backed by Vista Equity Partners) in 2015, which kicked off Graham's third career phase where he founded Edovate. In this role, he backs impact-focused seed stage K12 companies with investment and advisory support. He lives in Denver with his wife and two children and enjoys travel, the outdoors, and cooking. This week on the Finding Impact Podcast, we find out out how a young founder bootstrapped his startup and the lessons he learnt in wannapreneurship. We talk with Cyril Michino, co-founder of Chaptr Global and hear about his entrepreneurial journey having founded 2 startups by the age of 21 and learn that capital is not a barrier for starting up. Cyril shares his experiences around the challenges faced by young founders and how he's innovating around such challenges by adopting innovative revenue-sharing business models. On this podcast you will learn: How Cyril started his first business – Deliverus, an e-commerce platform in Nairobi, quite accidentally when he was just 17, based on an idea that he and his friends came up with for a high school business plan competition. (03:38) Cyril shares how he overcame the challenge of lack of experience, being a young founder, and used tools such as YouTube videos for creating pitch decks, learning marketing techniques, etc. He also shares how he kept his curiosity levels high by reading blogs and articles to learn how things work out in a business and trying to find answers though online resources as much as possible. (09:47) About what went wrong with Cyril's first startup as they set out to focus on things such as getting the infrastructure ready, building the best mobile application, planning a big launch, etc., - things that Cyril calls “entrepreneurial naivety”, irrelevant from an entrepreneurship point of view and leads to wannapreneurship. Cyril also shares these, and many more insights based on this experience on what's stopping entrepreneurs from actually starting up and also what's holding back entrepreneurship in Africa in his TEDx talk (check resources below for the link to the talk). (13:26) One of the critical things about being a young founder is to invest time in building a team with skills who solve the gaps that the founder personally has, like for example in Cyril's case, he learnt that they needed people with real experience in managing deliveries, logistics, order fulfilment, things that cannot be learnt online but comes only with experience. (16:13) Cyril then shares his journey of starting up his new blended learning edtech platform – Chaptr Global, that helps teach emerging technologies, such as AI, data science, blockchain to people in emerging markets, using an income sharing model, where students can sign-up for courses without upfront payment and pay later when they start earning upon graduation from the program. (19:34) Finally, Cyril shares a powerful quote, based on his experience that says –“if you're an entrepreneur and you cannot start off your idea in two weeks, then you're probably not the best person for that thing”. As a young founder, it is important to be able to start work on something that the founder can personally start and build an MVP in less than two weeks. Once the MVP is built, the founder can then focus on learning aspects to improve the MVP, finding product-market fit and growing it into a venture.
