On an August night in 1933 Harbin in then-Japanese controlled Manchuria–Semyon Kaspe, French citizen, famed concert musician, and Russian Jew, is abducted after a night out. Suspicion falls on the city's fervently anti-semitic Russian fascists. Yet despite pressure from the French consulate, the Japanese police slow-walk the investigation—and three months later, Semyon is found dead. The abduction, murder and trial catch the world's attention right as Japan is trying to win international support for the puppet state of Manchukuo—and it's the subject of Scott Seligman's latest book, Murder in Manchuria: The True Story of a Jewish Virtuoso, Russian Fascists, a French Diplomat, and a Japanese Spy in Occupied China (U Nebraska Press, 2023) In this interview, Scott and I talk about Harbin, the major players in Semyon's abduction and murder, and how the investigation and trial became an international sensation. Scott D. Seligman is a writer and historian. An aura is an invisible energy that surrounds living things. Aura photography seeks to capture coronal electrical discharges. Aura photography can be dated back to 1939. It was invented by Russian inventor Semyon Kirlian and his wife Valentine. They were observing a patient getting treatment from an electrical generator. The patient's skin emitted a neon glow. Semyon and Valentine wanted a way of capturing that and they ended up developing Kirlian photography.Once your aura photo is taken, it is accompanied by a reading which explains the colors visible on your portrait. In this episode, we will be looking at how psychics look at auras. Also, we will share our experiences with having an aura photo taken. Shannon took had her first aura photo taken in 2018/2019. Not long ago, we had our pictures taken. We will share our experiences and the readings we got for our photos. Also, we will share how we read other peoples' auras and our auras.Key Talking Points of the Episode:[01:06] What is aura photography?[04:17] Shannon's first experience[06:56] What happens in an aura photo session[08:54] Our tarot readings[12:20]Digging into Lili's aura photo[15:20] Digging into Shannon's aura photo[15:24] Our aura photo[21:37] How do Psychics see auras: Shannon's experience[26:36] How Lili sees aurasMagical Quotes from the Episode:“There's a lot of information you can get when you read your aura. When you're in meditation, check in with yourself and see where your aura is, and you'll feel it in a physical sense.”“Everyone has this intuitive ability to tap into this energy too.”“When setting the intention, make sure it makes sense.” Have you ever had the experience of seeing your aura, or have you ever had aura photography? We would love to hear about your experience. If you are an aura photographer or an aura reader and would love to come on the show and talk to us, we would love to hear your story. About the author: @semyon is a DJ, the Void Radio and Podcast (@thevoidradio) creator, digger. Originally from Moscow he is now living in Amsterdam. Author's message: "Music is in my life all the time; a different times – different music. Recently I mostly involved with the minimal scene and all its subgenres. I like the intricacy, the ability to catch your attention for a 10-minute journey, and then another one, and another one... As any other person I spend most of my time sleeping, then goes the Soundcloud surfing — a constant search for something new and interesting. I am convinced in the idea that the release date has nothing to do with the music sophisticatedness. There is a plenty of a very good music been released 5-10 years ago, as well as recently. And that is exactly the reason why in this mix you'll find the tracks from a very different epochs. Now let's focus on the music. I hope you'll like it." mastering: @charley-vince

This week our guest is Semyon Simonov, a human rights activist from Sochi in Krasnodar region. For many years, Semyon Simonov has been head of the regional human rights NGO, Southern Human Rights Centre, which provided free legal assistance on human rights violations, organized educational events and facilitated other civic initiatives in collaboration with other NGOs until it effectively ceased to function in 2017 because of fines imposed under the ‘foreign agent' law. On 20 July 2020 the authorities charged human rights activist Semyon Simonov under Art. 315, Part 2, of the Russian Criminal Code – i.e. a charge of non-execution of a court decision, in accordance with which the organization Southern Human Rights Centre had been fined under the ‘foreign agent' law. Our podcast is about this case – although we also succeeded in asking Semyon many other questions, as you will heare.Regarding the charges brought against Semyon Simonov, on 20 July 2020 Dunja Mijatovic, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, said in a statement: “Today's indictment of Semyon Simonov, a Russian human rights defender in Sochi, for not complying with the legislation on non-commercial organisations is alarming and will have a massive chilling effect on the entire human rights community in Russia.“Human Rights Watch in a statement said: “This attack against a human rights defender demonstrates how the Russian authorities continue to use the repressive foreign agents law to criminalize the important work of independent groups. Not only should the case against Semyon Simonov be dropped immediately, but the foreign agents law needs to go.”Frontline Defenders has also issued a statement on the case: “Front Line Defenders is deeply concerned by the indictment of Semyon Simonov and believes that the pressure on and harassment against him is a concerted attempt to effectively make it impossible for him to carry out his human rights activities in Russia. Front Line Defenders reiterates its concern regarding the extension of the “foreign agents” law to include individuals, as it places human rights defenders under increased risk and further hampers their peaceful and legitimate human rights work.”In its press release on the case, Human Rights Watch noted: “Human Rights Defenders are afforded specific recognition and protection in international law to enable them to carry out their human rights work without undue interference. The United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders underscores that everyone performing activities in defense of human rights has the right to seek the protection and realization of human rights at the national and international levels, to conduct human rights work individually and in association with others, to form associations and nongovernmental organizations, and to be protected in the event of violations. The declaration sets out a series of principles and rights drawn from international human rights instruments that are legally binding. It was adopted by consensus by the UN General Assembly.”This podcast is in Russian. You can also listen to this podcast on SoundCloud, Spotify or iTunes. CROSSOVER WITH OUR BFFs, RED BOOK CLUB! (Special shout out to Connor for editing and putting together this great description!) In the second of our two-part collaboration with @redbookclub on 'A Great Love' by Alexandra Kollontai, we talk about Natasha's struggle through abuse and neglect and how her courage and disillusionment helps her to eventually break free. The second half of the book deals with an intensification of Semyon's abuse, his neglect of her needs, the belittling of Natasha's intelligence, how Senya's actions provoke self doubt and anxiety in her, Natasha's frustration and eventual disillusionment with their relationship and how after becoming jaded with Semyon's incorrigibility she courageously asserts her autonomy and finally breaks free. We also chat about 'crazy ex-girlfriends', how women are kept as toys and why drunkenness isn't an excuse for misogyny. In our first time discussing a work of fiction we found no lack of important subject matter to be gleaned from the text. Considered by many to be a representation of a relationship between Inessa Armand and Vladimir Lenin, this essential and heart-breaking text gives us a deep insight into the physical and emotional reality of women revolutionaries before the October revolution and the harmful and misogynistic behaviour of men which remains unchanged to the present day. This book, set in the world of revolutionaries exiled following the 1905 revolution, tells us the story of Natasha, an intelligent and dedicated party organiser, and her relationship with Semyon Semyonovich, a highly respected but deeply abusive official within the same party. Drawing from biographical experiences and those of her fellow comrades Kollontai paints a vivid picture of the profound pain and frustration which women suffered and suffer through in left-wing organising circles. From emotional abuse, dismissiveness and the downplaying of achievements to the ideas of transactional relationships, control in the institution of marriage and more.
This week we're once again collaborating with our comrades from The Tolerant Left podcast to bring the second of our two part episode covering 'A Great Love' by Alexandra Kollontai. This episode features our amazing comrades from The Tolerant Left podcast, an essential voice for non-men on the left https://twitter.com/tolerantleftpod This episode is part of our series on Marxist-feminists. As Mao and Thomas Sankara have said, “Women hold up the other half of the sky.” Red Book Club recognizes that including the voices of nonmen in our studies is not a niche activity, but is in fact an essential step in gaining the most comprehensive view of the material conditions of the past and present that we possibly can; therefore we’ve planned this series to amplify the ideas that nonmen have been bringing to the conversation for centuries. From Federici’s analysis of women as a means of primitive accumulation to Luxemburg’s essay of the benefits of revolution vs the impossibility of reform, each of these works confronts history and the movement for social change through the lens of the experiences of nonmen in society. Semyon's professional journey started out in a rather unconventional manner. As one of the members of the famed MIT Blackjack team, he's always had an incredible knack and drive for mastering whatever challenge was in front of him. After living the life of a high roller, Semyon went on to become a successful founder of multiple tech companies but he found his true calling when he started angel investing and running the Techstars Boston program. He realized that his passion was really centered around helping other entrepreneurs succeed. Today, Semyon is the Founder and Managing Partner of One Way Ventures, a venture fund that is focused on investing in immigrant founders. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * Semyon's own story as an immigrant who migrated to the U.S. from Moscow. * How he became a member of the MIT Blackjack Team, which has been featured in movies, books, and documentaries. * His experience as an entrepreneur and the companies that he founded. * How he got into investing, where he made over 100 angel investments, plus his involvement with Techstars. * All of the details on One Way Ventures and how they are helping immigrant entrepreneurs. * Advice on generating interest from investors. * Common mistakes made by entrepreneurs. * And more! On today’s program, Yael Eckstein tells us how The Fellowship provides live-saving assistance to an 83 year-old widower in Russia.
This episode explores the colorful (and sometimes risk-filled) history of pigments and painters, and the conservators who save paintings from the ravages of time and accidental chemistry. First we take an art field trip around Philadelphia as art historian and CHF fellow Elisabeth Berry Drago tries to paint like it's 1699. We visit a butcher shop, a tile store, and an art supply store to try to get what we need. Then we talk to art conservator Mark F. Bockrath and Elisabeth Berry Drago. They tell us about the messy and occasionally dangerous process of making paints from pigments and talk about the transition to using paint from tubes. They also explain the conservation process and tell us why alchemists were so important to painters in early modern times. CREDITS: Hosts: Michal Meyer and Bob Kenworthy Guests: Mark F.
