Lindsey from northern MN writes “I was raspberry field picking and encountered what I at first thought was a mother bear and 2 cubs but they had hair not fur and it was auburn/brown less black like the bears in the area. The mother (large one) was distinctly “picking“ raspberries which has never sat well with me. A bear would have eaten berries off the bush and not as quiet. The two young ones always had their back towards me and I think they were trying to be in little balls. I never saw their faces. They were trying not to appear large. The big one held its head down so I didn't see eyes or face. I didn't even know they were there until I was too damn close to do anything about it. My child mind was in the space of it could have killed me if it wanted to. I picked right around it ended the row and very quietly and slowly retreating back to my grandfather and grandma who were back at the house. I told them there were bears in the field my grandfather shot off a rifle several times to scare them away. I knew damn well it wasn't a bear but I also was under 12 and I didn't know what it was I didn't have words to describe exactly what I had seen nor had I heard of big foot or Sasquatch. I was however completely terrified by this experience. Having seen a grizzly bear as an adult and a very large black bear I can say it was not that. I think it was kneeling and crouching. I was directly on the other side of the bush from it the raspberries were set up in rows. This was a large field surrounded by forest on three sides. Lots of deer lived in the area my family hunted and I grew up spending all my summers with them helping pick. It happened very early in the morning I was the first one out there and the dew was still wet on the leaves and it was cool still. The sun was just starting to come up but it was still filtering through the trees. We didn't start picking this early but I wanted to get a jump on it because the summers were so hot and humid. I used to pick what was equivalent to 24 pints 2 flat carriers before it would get too hot to mess with. Everyone in the area knew my grandma. She was very popular and she raised my mom in Detroit lakes with 5 other siblings. So I didn't want people bothering her as she had dementia and failing heath as she was in her late 90's. I had stumbled on your show by accident but having the experience I had obviously I listened to all the episodes. I never heard anything like the Ohio sounds they make on property nor the gibberish that was recorded in CA. I have heard what I can only describe to you as broken owls. They weren't quite right but I couldn't put my finger on exactly how I knew but I just felt like it was mimicking owl maybe. Grandpa lit the property like it was Fort Knox. I maybe understand that more now after listening to your show. They were one of the first people to move into that area. Across the road from them which is like 1/4 mile away from their house was the nearest neighbor and Skip had a cabin and he would fish on weekends. My grandparents lived there full time. None of their immediate neighbors did. And again very spread out. You were truly on your own out there if anything happened. That was the last time I ever picked berries alone. I wouldn't go that far into that field either. I would never have my back turned to those trees either after that experience.”   Lorenzo writes "I have gone back and forth wanting to email you. I'm just going to start from a weird encounter then into the sighting I had. In 2014, My wife and I were visiting her parents in Brookings Oregon, Brookings is a pretty rural area on the southern coast of Oregon on the border of California near the redwoods and being from Southern California it was simply beautiful. My father in law wanted to take us up the Winchuck River to a place called the lundlum house. its an open cabin you can camp at. This cabin is 11 miles up river from the 101. While we were driving up you veer left on wheeler creek rd from Winchuck river road. This road turns into dirt and gravel, while we were driving up a red SUV came flying down the road back towards Winchuck River rd they almost hit us and at the time we thought they were just jerks. We kept going and on the right you see this two story cabin and there is open grass area there's a trail down to the river its beautiful. No one was in the cabin so I went in and explored the cabin and layout. Then I noticed the trail to the river and this is where it got weird. I walk down the trail and I am taking in the scenery I look to my right and see a chair, a fishing pole with the line still in the water and an open beer can almost still full. I found it odd and no one was around... It took me a couple minutes to put it together did those people we past leave this stuff? I showed my wife and we found it odd. November 2016 we were back visiting my in laws with my son who was born in June of 2016. we also had a friend come along and one day we decided to show her the cabin. Right before we do the slight left up the road to the Ludlum house I had an anxious feeling come over me. We were driving slow because we were in a Prius and my son in the car. The river is to our right and around a bend I look down at the river and what I see is something standing upright in the middle of the river and look over its shoulder as we drive past and I say to my wife did you see that and she said yep that was sasquatch. We park in an area where there are camp sights and my wife and our friend get out and I said I am going to stay with the car and the whole time it felt like we were being watch and I basically ushered my friend and her friend back in the car because I didn't like the feeling. Driving back to the main road we were talking about it and we convinced ourselves what we saw we really didn't see it. I was very observant about where I saw the creature and I thought maybe it was a tree or something but I thought I recognized the spot but that spot had nothing in the middle of the river. To me inside I thought oh we did see what we saw and it moved on. Wes ever since that I get a weird feeling going up the Winchuck River after 6 miles, Its beautiful up there but I just don't like going up that way.

1867: Category 2 Hurricane hits the Gulf Coast

Late on October 2, 1867 a hurricane formed in the Gulf of Mexico. Holding its intensity, the storm system paralleled the Texas coastline, causing "many" deaths. A storm tide value of 7 feet was reported in Ludlum, and it is possible that Brownsville, Texas, was in the western eyewall of the hurricane at the storms closest approach. Turning toward Louisiana, the storm made landfall in the state with winds of 100 mph, as a Category 2 storm on October 4. Moving to the east and weakening, the storm made landfall on the state of Florida during the day on October 6. Holding its strength while crossing the Sunshine state, the tropical storm re-emerged into Atlantic waters. Taking a slight turn to the north, it dissipated off the coast of North Carolina on October 9. The hurricane struck Texas, near the mouth of the Rio Grande, and devastated Brownsville and Matamous. Because of the devastating effects in these three, state authorities sought help from the governors of two Mexican states. Relief was also sent from Veracruz, Mexico. The entire population of Bagdad Texas fled, while Matamoros was left nearly in ruins. The official death toll in the area was unknown, but local accounts stated there were at least 26 dead. Entire families disappeared from the area.  Most buildings in Brazoa Santiago were leveled. Clarksville, two miles inland, was also devastated and shortly later abandoned. Galveston, had suffered mightily in an intense hurricane just 30 years earlier and would be hit by the worst natural disaster in American history a little more than 30 years later when the 1900 hurricane killed 6-12,000 people. The city was already in the midst of a yellow fever epidemic, was flooded by a storm surge. The mainland rail bridge, a hotel and hundreds of homes in the city were washed away. Twelve schooners and a river steamboat were wrecked in the bay there and wharves destroyed. On October 3 high seas and heavy rains flooded New Orleans. Bath houses and a saw mill there were blown away. High winds and heavy rainfall continued across southeast Louisiana until October 6, inflicting great damage on crops. Lisa Gardner says The Freedom Broker is 'clever and gritty', and Peter James says it's 'spellbinding'. If you like I Am Pilgrim, David Baldacci's King and Maxwell series or Ludlum's Bourne series, you will love this. Thea Paris is one of only 25 elite professionals in the world with the ability to bring hostages home safely. International negotiation, undercover operations and extractions are a part of life. Their only objective: release. For Thea, her family's wealth meant kidnap was a constant threat and their worst fears were realised when her brother was kidnapped. Although he was returned, she made it her life's mission to stop others suffering the trauma they did. Now Thea's past is about to come back with a vengeance as her billionaire father is taken. With her professionalism challenged to its limits, all Thea knows is that she has to get her father back alive, at any cost.

Dave presents an idea from loyal listener Phil from Punxutawney [possibly not his real name] whereby the whole country could be vaccinated in 13 weeks. Phil reasoned if garbage trucks could do pickups every week, why can't the feds procure a fleet of medical vans staffed with "shooters" ? Follow Dave's math and you'll see how it could be done for $3 billion, not exactly chump change but literally a drop in the bucket called the federal budget. No, Dave is not going into the math details here; trust him. Del unexpectedly provides a faster, cheaper option: Just use all those Amazon vans clogging the roads.Del tells us about the time he was drafted as a guide for an African safari in a private game preserve, charged with finding elephants for his clients. These are the largest land mammals, right? Should be easy to find, right? Maybe. Maybe not.Dave reviews an adventure essay by Kim Cross about two cyclists traveling in opposite directions across Europe and Asia. He's struck by the poetic beauty of the writing and the majesty of the epic journeys of an American and a Brit. What are the chances these two strangers would meet at a desert cafe at the edge of nowhere? But that's not even the best part. Dave declares it the best adventure essay since Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. You can read her story here. If you like it, she also has a book out-WHAT STANDS IN A STORM.Del once again almost reviews The Road to Gandolfo, an offbeat book by author Robert Ludlum writing as Michael Shepherd. It could be humorous, we're not sure since Del doesn't really tell us the plot or anything else about the book. The moral according to Del seems to be that once you're successful you can do anything you want. Just sayin....We wrap it up with words of wisdom from Jackie Kennedy that Dave has had pasted in his folio for 20 years.EMAIL US IF YOU WANT THE VACCINE MATH Email us at buckstwoold@gmail.com

About THE BOURNE EVOLUTION: After the death of his lover in a mass shooting, secret agent and the man without a past, Jason Bourne is convinced that there is more to her murder than it seems. Worse, he believes that Treadstone, the clandestine spy agency that trained him, is behind the killing. Bourne goes rogue, leaving Treadstone behind and taking on a new mission to infiltrate and expose Medusa, a shadowy, anarchical cyber-enemy intent on harvesting and controlling the world’s private information. As an independent operative, Bourne has been hired by a powerful cabal of tech executives who want him to stop the threat posed to their empire by the crusading young congresswoman Sofia Ortiz. When Ortiz is assassinated during a rally in New York’s Washington Square Park, it is assumed that Bourne is behind it. Bourne alone knows that someone else pulled the trigger. And that someone is now after him. Meanwhile, Abbey Laurent, a dogged Canadian journalist, has watched the assassination firsthand. Back in Quebec City, she awaits a rendezvous with an informant—Bourne—when she witnesses even more violent killing. Soon, Abbey is engaged in a cat-and-mouse game, not only with Bourne, but with an unknown killer. Despite her street smarts, the seasoned reporter can’t be sure who is telling her the truth and whom she can trust. When she reluctantly places her faith in the enigmatic Bourne, a cyclone of danger will take her and her mystery protector from Canada to the U.S. to the Caribbean—as Bourne tries to figure out who has framed him for the congresswoman’s murder and who exactly the real enemy is. www.BFreemanBooks.com Twitter: @bfreemanbooks Facebook: @bfreemanfans ABOUT THE AUTHORS Brian Freeman is a bestselling author of more than twenty novels, including the Jonathan Stride and Frost Easton series. Military thriller author, Joshua Hood, stopped by the podcast to talk with me about being given the keys to the Bentley of Robert Ludlum's storied writing legacy, the military toughness that's written into his own stories, and how impostor syndrome doesn't phase him. "In my career, I've had almost every bad thing that could happen to a writer ... happen to a writer." – Joshua Hood Joshua was an English major at the University of Memphis before joining the military where he spent five years in the 82nd Airborne Division. As a team leader in the 3-504 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Iraq (2005-2006), the author conducted combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also served as a squad leader with the 1-508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Afghanistan (2007-2008) and he was decorated for valor in Operation Furious Pursuit. Hood is also a decorated "life-saving" sniper team leader who was on a full-time SWAT team in Memphis, Tennessee, and he has conducted countless stateside operations with the FBI, ATF, DEA, Secret Service, and US Marshals. His background and expertise lend to the popularity of his own Search and Destroy military thriller series, and also made him a shoo-in to reboot the brilliant legacy of the late Robert Ludlum (1927-2001), a literary legend whose books have sold in the hundreds of millions. Joshua kicked off a new series inspired by Ludlum's Bourne universe with Robert Ludlum's The Treadstone Resurrection, a book that #1 New York Times bestselling author Mark Greaney called, “An intense and electrifying espionage adventure [and] ... a worthy addition to the Ludlum bookshelf.” Please help us learn more about you by completing this short 7-question survey If you’re a fan of The Writer Files, please click subscribe to automatically see new interviews. ABOUT THE BOOK: Operation Treadstone is a top-secret CIA Black Ops program that made uses behavior modification to turn government agents into virtually superhuman assassins. The agents can lead normal lives until “activated,” at which point they become killing machines deployed to undertake nearly impossible missions. Treadstone made Jason Bourne an unstoppable force, but he's not the only one. Treadstone has nearly ruined Adam Hayes. They trained him to be a nearly invincible assassin, but it also cost him his family. Adam only wants normalcy, but the savage voices in his head still haunt him and control his responses. Now living in rural Washington state and scraping by as a carpenter, his marriage is a shambles and he hates being separated from his young son, but at least he has left Treadstone in the past…until he receives a mysterious email from a former colleague stating, “By the time you get this I’ll be dead…”. Soon after, Adam is attacked by an unknown hit team at his job site. Now, Adam is wholly sucked back into the Treadstone universe and must regain the skills they taught him––lightning reflexes and a cold conscience––in order to discover who the would-be killers are, and why they have come after him now. Are his pursuers enemies from a long-ago mission? Rival intelligence agents? Or, perhaps, someone inside Treadstone? His search will lead him to the highest levels of government and place him once more in the path of the extreme danger he thought he’d left behind. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Joshua Hood is the author of Warning Order and Clear by Fire. He graduated from the University of Memphis before joining the military and spending five years in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a team leader in the 3-504 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Iraq from 2005-2006 where he conducted combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On his return to civilian life he was a sniper team leader on a full time SWAT team in Memphis, TN, where he was awarded the lifesaving medal. "The Bourne Legacy," "Jason Bourne," and "Treadstone" producer Ben Smith joins me for Episode 9 of The Fourth Wall to talk about expanding the World of Jason Bourne in the Bourne spin-off series. Making for the perfect blend of "24" meets "Heroes," the series marks an almost decade long journey for Smith as he's had his heart set on expanding the world that Robert Ludlum created. Perhaps much of this influence comes from the involvement of "Heroes" creator Tim Kring, who Smith discussed collaborating with, and stunt coordinator from "The Bourne Ultimatum," but at the heart of it, what excited Smith the most was the opportunity to explore the mythology of not only the films but Ludlum's novels in order to tell very personal and interconnected stories that were affected by the geopolitical landscape of today. "The base that Ludlum created is very rich," said Smith, "and I think it's a perfect fit for television. You just have a lot more real estate to dive into a lot of different characters which is what we've done on 'Treadstone.'" For those unaware, "Treadstone" tells the origins of the secret government organization that led to the birth of Jason Bourne. Taking place in 1973 and present day, the series follows these sleeper agents from the Cicada Program (another program under the Treadstone umbrella) as they mysteriously begin to awaken around the globe ten years after audiences meet Jason Bourne in "The Bourne Identity." The prospect of crossing over "Treadstone" with Matt Damon's Jason Bourne or even Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross is certainly something that would excite fans of the franchise and even Smith himself, however, it all comes down to what the story requires. "What's happening in the world of Bourne is independent of what's happening right now in 'Treadstone,'" said Smith. "There is crossover mythology, but there is no planned tie-in today." During my conversation with Smith, we discussed the long journey to creating "Treadstone," balancing character storytelling with that signature Bourne action, the work that went into the stunt choreography, his relationship with Ludlum's novels and the Bourne franchise as a whole, and actors he'd like to see play in the expansive Bourne sandbox. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

Now, along with Universal Content Productions, he is presenting a prequel of sorts on television in the form of Treadstone, coming to the USA Network on October 15, 2019. The TV series will explore the origins of the black ops initiative that turned ordinary people into deadly assassins that could be activated at any time. With storylines taking place in the 70s as well as in modern times, Treadstone appears poised to give us an action-packed international romp worth of Ludlum and (ahem) the Bourne legacy. And with that, I would like to introduce my good friend and a great writer who also happens to be a multi-award winning author, a retired clinical forensic psychologist, and a retired college professor, Richard Helms. Do you go by Rick or Richard? Richard: I go by Rick. Debbi: Yes, I always call you Rick [laughs]. So, very cool, Rick. Thanks for being here. I'm so glad you could be here. Richard: Well, I'm happy to be here. I appreciate you having me today. Debbi: Well, it's my pleasure and at this point, you said you have 19 published novels? Richard: Well, yeah. I have 19 that have been published. I think three of them are still in print. So, a bunch of them are available as ebooks, but most of my novels right now are out-of-print for any of a number of reasons. My own publishing company folded up back in 2011 and several of the books were on that, and Five Star (I'm one of the Five Star orphans). Some of you may not be familiar with Five Star. It was a division of Cengage Learning, which used to be Houghton Mifflin. It was Thomson-Shore and all these other, but anyway, they folded their mystery thriller line, I guess January of 2015 and I got the message on my birthday that my book publisher was going out of business. Not only that, but my books were going to be going out of print. So, the books that I had with Five Star are largely out-of-print at this point, but I have had 19 published up to this point beginning all the way back in 1980, which is probably before a lot of people watching this were born, when I had my first couple of novels published by World Karting Magazine. I was a go-cart racer back then when I was in college and Anne Bazzoli-Kugler with World Karting Magazine talked me into writing a series of stories about a driver named Karl Geary and the two books, Geary's Year and Geary's Gold were serialized over the course of about four years in World Karting Magazine. I immediately got to work and started writing an adult style thriller. At the time I was really reading a lot of Robert Ludlum and Ken Follett and David Morrell and so I decided I was going to write a Ludlum-style thriller called, The Valentine Profile because obviously getting published was so incredibly easy that all I had to do was dash it out and send it off and people would pay to publish it. I didn't see another book in print for almost 20 years [laughs]. So… Debbi: This is not a place to look for overnight success. Richard: Well, most of the overnight successes I know have been doing this for about 20 years [laughs]. Debbi: Exactly! Exactly! Richard: At one level or another. I mean [Robert] Crais was writing for TV for years; Lee Goldberg, too. You know people who've been slaving away in the salt mines of writing in the back rooms of the story-runner rooms, and a lot of them are now coming out as novelists and doing a really great job. Debbi: That's correct. That's true. I was going to ask you about stock car racing and if you'd ever considered writing a NASCAR novel. Richard: Well, I wrote a novella, which is currently…I have a book of short stories that's currently with my new book publisher. It's Clay Stafford Books out of Nashville, Tennessee. But I've sent them a short story compilation that includes an unpublis...

Jason Bourne. In 2002, Doug Liman and Matt Damon brought Robert Ludlum's spy thriller, The Bourne Identity to the silver screen and every few years after that, a successive story in Ludlum's trilogy would find it's way to theaters. Starting in 2012, the movie team ran out of Ludlum's books and have been crafting new stories ever since. In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by fellow spy Alice Baker to talk about Jason Bourne. We discuss the previous movies, being re-Bourne, revenge destruction, the character of Bourne, privacy vs security, Nicky, new players, production and our ratings. Jason Bourne has existed in Robert Ludlum novels for over 35 years. For mainstream audiences, however, he came to life when Matt Damon starred as the amnesiac secret agent in 2002. That action-packed rendition now defines the character, and has totally overshadowed Bourne's first portrayal -- in a 1988 ABC miniseries. The story was much closer to Ludlum's original novel than the later films, but can Richard Chamberlain match Damon's performance? To find out, join Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart as this new retrospective series is Bourne! And come back each week until we review the new Jason Bourne film in theaters!

Action Movie Anatomy hosts Ben Bateman and Andrew Ghai break down The Bourne Ultimatum! The Bourne Ultimatum is a 2007 American-German action spy thriller film directed by Paul Greengrass loosely based on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name. The screenplay was written by Tony Gilroy, Scott Z. Burns and George Nolfi. The Bourne Ultimatum is the third in the Bourne film series, being preceded by The Bourne Identity (2002) and The Bourne Supremacy (2004). The fourth film, The Bourne Legacy, was released in August 2012. Matt Damon reprises his role as Ludlum's signature character, former CIA assassin and psychogenic amnesiacJason Bourne. In the film, he continues his search for information about his past before he was part of Operation Treadstone and becomes a target of a similar assassin program. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
