This one was a challenge... I'm trying to summarize the episode you'll hear with Adam Lawrence and explain why you would want to tune in. Ironically, of the key takeaways from the conversation is that words can be very limiting, especially when dealing with challenges that involve complex intangible human experiences. This is why you see many other, richer forms of communication being used in service design. We love to visualize, prototype with LEGO and even act things out. And what we find is that these forms of communication, which look deceivingly playful to outsiders, lead to better and faster decision-making. It's not just about being more effective either; by focusing on words as the primary way of communication, we exclude those who could contribute meaningfully through other expressive means. However, as I'm sure you know, not everyone feels comfortable with these alternative forms of communication, even though they are more effective and inclusive. Many organizations crave certainty, logic, and definitive answers, leaving little room for ambiguity. This brings us back to the conversation with Adam. We delve into why non-designers hesitate to embrace richer forms of communication and the fears and anxieties associated with it. And how can we lead by example to create a pull effect rather than imposing our methods dogmatically onto others. So, all in all, we cover a lot of ground in a conversation where we advocate for using fewer words :) A standout message for me was when Adam said that the riskiest thing a business can do is stick to the status quo. Durante los últimos años la percepción de la palabra "diseño" ha cambiado y ha ganado un amplio terreno dentro de las organizaciones, pues ha sabido demostrar qué valor aporta a la organización en sus distintos niveles. Hablar de diseño de servicios es aún más preciso y su concepto no siempre es fácil de entender o diferenciar de otras disciplinas o espacios. Por suerte, tuve la oportunidad de sentarme a hablar con Jimena Mardones Buet, líder de diseño de servicios en Inter-Cultura y que me contara sobre su experiencia en el diseño de servicios, especialmente en la banca privada, donde trabaja hoy en día. Junto a Jime hablé durante más de una hora de cómo la mirada de servicios ayuda a las organizaciones a colocar a los usuarios y clientes dentro de la toma de decisiones (donde normalmente han sido excluidos), sin dejar a un lado los intereses económicos y políticos de cada organización. Además, dentro de la conversación nos comparte algunas anécdotas y experiencias personales, no sólo dentro de la banca privada, sino de otros rubros, como su paso por el Estado o por PyMes. Ana Andjelic is a strategy executive with wide-ranging experience on the agency and client sides. Recent roles include Chief Brand Officer at fashion retailer Rebecca Minkoff and SVP, Global Strategy Director at Havas LuxHub. Past agency experience includes time at Droga5, HUGE, The Barbarian Group, and Razorfish. Ana also has a PhD in sociology and has published dozens of articles about luxury and fashion branding, the experience economy, social influence, content strategy, and more. Her writing has been published in The Guardian, Fast Company, AdAge, Adweek, LeanLuxe, Luxury Daily, Glossy, Campaign, and Form Design Magazine. In 2018, she was listed by Forbes as one of the top 50 Chief Marketers in 2018 who "serve as models of a new, emerging and disruptive chief marketer." She's been recognized as one of the "Luxury Women to Watch" by Luxury Daily and one of the top 10 digital strategists by The Guardian. I kicked things off by asking Ana about her PhD-why she chose to pursue it and how it's impacted her career. Then we talked about a term she writes about "social currency." I asked what it means and why it's important. Next, we talked about how she defines "brand experience" and what brands should do to create compelling brand experiences and social influence. Ana says, "These days, the strength of the brand is how successfully it can defy the strength of the algorithm." To do so, she suggests brands must exhibit at least one of her 4 Cs of the modern brand: Community Content Curation Collaborations Throughout the interview, Ana lists quite a few brands she's interested in because they're "trying something new," including GOOP, Casper, Net-a-Porter, The Upper House (a luxury hotel in Hong Kong), Rapha (cycling clothing and accessories), Tracksmith (running gear), Away (luggage), Glossier, and MUJI. Wrapping up the conversation, I asked Ana for book recommendations. She likes Value Proposition Design (by the authors of Business Model Generation), This is Service Design Thinking, and a series called Brand. Balance., which she describes as "little booklets [that explore] what iconic brands have done right ... a deep dive into the brand aesthetics, identity, and then the brand expression." She also recommends books in the field of behavioral economics, such as those by Daniel Kahneman, Amos Tversky, and Bruno Latour. Lastly, Ana offered some advice to young and/or junior people in branding and marketing: "I overall believe that people need to think more. They're too trusting of ideas-they just adopt ideas without critical thinking. Whatever can inspire junior people, or advance their critical thinking ... I would advise that. And then, ... I cannot underscore [enough] the importance of observation and being very aware that one's own perspective is limited. So, that means travel, expose yourself to other cultures, observe how people behave, observe obstacles, how they overcome obstacles in their behavior, and just be very open." Dein IT-Projekt wurde erfolgreich beendet. Alles wurde termingerecht fertig, alle geplanten Funktionen sind realisiert und sogar das festgelegte Budget wurde nicht überschritten. Du feierst das Projektende stellst später fest: Das Projekt war ein spektakulärer Fehlschlag! Denn erst nach Projektende zeigte sich, dass die Projektergebnisse weder genutzt, noch akzeptiert wurden. Damit so etwas nicht passiert, muss der Nutzer in das Zentrum des Projektgeschehens gestellt werden. Und daher freue ich mich wirklich sehr, dass ich in dieser Episode mit Simone Carrier eine ausgemachte Expertin für das Service-Design-Thinking zu Gast hatte.

Empathy. It’s an unavoidable word in the world of user experience design. Too often it is applied to designs in too narrow a fashion. Your empathy should come from the problem your design is solving, not measured in the level of frustration or delight experienced with your design. Ariel Kennan is the Director of Design and Product at the New York City Mayor's Office for Economic Opportunity. She has been working on the HOME-STAT initiative which is an effort of the City of New York to properly provide services to the city’s homeless population. In this episode, Ariel shares her story and is joined by Marc Stickdorn who offers his insights on how service design can be done on such a massive scale. Marc is the CEO and co-founder of More Than Metrics and author of the book Service Design Thinking. He will also be teaching a daylong workshop at the UI22 conference in Boston this November 13-15. In the realm of user experience, disciplines and titles can take on different meanings. Determining buzzword jargon from actual, useful distinctions and processes is sometimes a bit tricky. The term Service Design has been with us for a while now. Some see it as just plain, good UX. Marc Stickdorn sees it as more than that.
