Six String Hayride Classic Country Podcast Episode 39. The 1940's Episode. We pay our respects to the recently departed Dickey Betts and Duane Eddy, then it's back in the time machine for the 1940s. Gene Autry, Sons of the Pioneers, and Bob Wills continue to dominate music. Rose Maddox ups the ante for Western Fashion. Franklin Roosevelt guides a nation through World War 2 with help from Rosie the Riveter. James Cagney, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Bogart and Bacall entertain us on the big screen. Jackie Robinson plays some Baseball. Chris and Jim discuss The Big Songs of the Decade, The War, and The Movies that shaped the 1940's. Chris serves up some SPAM MUSUBI and another John Wayne Cocktail and we explain our love for the music of the Andrew Sisters. In 1947, Hank Williams arrives as the Honky Tonk Poet of the Post War Years. All this and the usual shenanigans with Chris and Jim.
Andy would never turn down a well-made Spam Musubi, but he and Stacey have some tough love for newsletters that are hitting the junk folder. Also this week, we field a question from a programs person who wants to go for the CEO job -- is it possible or advisable? And finally, what happens when you're a board member who's friends with the Executive Director, and that Executive Director turns out to be not very good at her job? Stacey and Andy definitely have some thoughts! Thanks for listening, and be sure to send your questions to questions@nonprofiteverything.com!

Sixty survivors of Maui's devastating wildfires were rescued from a single house during the massive search operation. Hormel, which produces the canned pork product, is sending 'The Convoy of Hope' to Maui after the island was ravaged by the disaster, which resulted in 106 deaths as of Tuesday's (August 15) update. Hawaii consumes an estimated 8 million cans of SPAM per year, the most of any U.S. state and holds the annual SPAM JAM, which features unique dishes including SPAM Wontons and SPAM Musubi. During live coverage of yet another indictment of former President Donald Trump, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow invited former First Lady, Secretary of State and two time presidential loser Hillary Clinton to smear Donald Trump and ironically whine about how denying the results of elections is bad for democracy. A new found species of snake in Peru has been named Tachymenoides harrisonfordi to honour the actor's environmental advocacy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Margaret Cho has been a standup comedian for four decades (since she was 14 years old!) but she also LOVES to cook and collects specialty cookware and gadgets – she has her very own mochi machine! Her last meal takes us to Hawaii, where Spam is so popular it's even served at McDonald's. But here on the mainland, Spam is often stigmatized. Robert Koo, author of Dubious Gastronomy: The Cultural Politics of Eating Asian in the USA, walks us through the complicated history of the world's favorite canned ham. True food fanatics appreciate the highs and the lows; they can equally enjoy caviar and Cap'n Crunch, and Margaret is no different. Margaret shares her strangest cravings, and listeners call in to talk about theirs. Follow Rachel Belle on Instagram! RUN This week we recap our first live race of 2021! It’s also Aimee’s first race back since the knee surgery. The Cape Coral Animal Shelter’s Rescue Run was a 5K to benefit our hometown’s first and only rescue facility for animals. The weather was beautiful. There was a great “runners village” during the pre-race with coffee, breakfast, and more! With no pace requirements, it was the perfect race to pet dogs and follow the advice of our Physical Therapist, which was to walk the entire distance. We finished last. It was a great morning to start a comeback and support a fantastic organization. And, puppies! EAT We first met AJ & Christina Bordelon when we covered the Viet Yum Food Truck on Episode 104 at Fort Myers Brewing Company’s 7th Anniversary. They were so nice and the Bahn Mi Rice Bowl was so tasty at that event. Fast forward to a year later. They are still going strong! They reached out to us and said, hey, come try our new dish. It is called Saigon Wusubi. Their description on the instagram post that introduced it says it all, “Our little take on Spam Musubi! Fried spam caramelized in our Saigon Sauce wrapped with Jasmine rice, toasted black sesame seeds, green onions and nori seaweed, drizzled with our spicy mayo mix. So YUM!” Links to find out more about Viet Yum: Website: https://www.vietyumfood.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vietyumfood/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VietYumFood/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/vietyumfood Thanks to AJ and Christina for inviting us! We can’t wait to get back and have more of their tasty bites! DRINK We met the owners and founders of The Clever Bean at the start of our humble podcast, virtually, of course. They are based in Draper, Utah. They opened a coffee shop up there and we were supporting them via social media. They were nice enough to send us coffee beans and that tempted us to look for races out their way. Then, of course, the pandemic. The founders of The Clever Bean had to close their shop. But that did not deter them from finding success. They have found it by making their product available online and continuing to expand and create. We were lucky enough to be selected to be a part of the Clever Cold Brew Crew and beta-test their cold brew kit. Their product did not disappoint! It is delicious earthy medium coffee and easy to make. We can’t wait to come up with cold brew cocktails and mocktails! Thank you Craton Edwards and Dennis Garrett, founders of The Clever Bean for this great experience! Servility brings a refreshing perspective on how they as a team run and present themselves, so get ready because a wave of kindness is coming your way. In this episode you will learn about:What you can expect from the dance crew audition process. How to be within your true nature. How the dance community has evolved. What dancers miss most about rehearsal during this pandemic. What dancers hope for your dance community in the future. Servility members contribute from beginning to end so much information about their team, their goals, and overall wishes for the dance community. Servility prides themselves in having kind dancers who they can create deep connections with, so that they can be the best representation to dancers everywhere. Question Highlights:How dancers are coping with the pandemic? What’s the foundation of the dance crew? What is Servility's biggest take away from this pandemic? What do you think about dance styles intertwining?Have you discovered new things in dance while being away from Servility? About Servility: Founded in 2016, Servility is a dance team at University of the Pacific. The team will work to train dancers in a variation of modern hip-hop styles, as well as connect individuals to the dance community. Our core values center around: humility, passion, ambition, and growth. While all of our dancers may come from different levels of experience, we still strive to learn from each other despite our differing dance backgrounds. This team will focus on the aspect of significance: reminding our dancers why they had begun dancing in the first place. Integrating both the importance of having fun and wanting to better ourselves, Servility will serve as a positive environment for hungry dancers. As a team, they focus on helping each other grow, as both individuals and as one, in their collective passion for dance. Here it is folks. My Golden Fork Awards for 2017! What did I eat that was noteworthy? A lot of stuff evidently. These are dishes so tasty I have to talk about them at length, even months after eating. Which is how I construct the list, the way I've done it since 2009. It’s not a perfect method, just my own. Let me know what you think. Do you agree? Disagree? What did I miss? 2017 was different. A lot happened. To me. To our community. I found myself reaching for foods that screamed "COMFORT" more often than not. I also found my memory ain't what it used to be. So when I ate something that fed more than just my stomach? I wrote it down. Sometimes I remembered to take a photograph. I did away with limits, so there are not 10 dishes or one that tops them all. It's not "Best Of" meaning all the other stuff I ate was subpar. Far from it. This is not a popularity contest. These are my opinions. This is about the folks in our community who do the hard work. The Work of Food. It's about Big Love. These dishes gave me Big Love and comforted me, all of us, at a time when we really needed it. I'm so grateful to everyone who granted me each and every memorable experience. Thank you for your continued support, suggestions, and comments. I'm honored and proud of our community. At the amount of food talent in our region. I’m beyond grateful for the opportunities my own version of the “Amsterdam Chess Club” has afforded me. 2017 in Edacious World? Not so bad. I took a class, gained a mentor and a student, did my first fundraiser, moderated several food panels, and met two of my heroes. I took my chosen vocation to the next level by just showing up. Doing what needs doing. In launching a podcast I’ve learned so much about our community, but even more than that I’ve gained insight into my own being which was entirely unexpected. The only resolution I’m making is to continue these connections. To do more with these conversations. To go deeper. It’s been a wild ride and one I hope you’ll continue to take with me in 2018.
