Episode 197: Scribal Networks and Diplomatic Knowledge Production across North Africa What did trans-Maghribi society look like on the eve of colonialism? Who travelled across these spaces and for what reasons? This interview is an early exploration into Dr. Kitlas' second project, which proposes a more attentive engagement with the history of a dynamic and multifaceted eighteenth-century trans-maghrib society. Spanning Tunis to Tangier, this project examines the networks of traders, Sufis, consuls, translators, and court advisors that embedded themselves in Maghribi locales outside their home cities and, in doing so, took part in producing a distinct trans-maghrib socio-cultural sphere. Building on his first monograph that focuses on the layers of diplomatic practice in Morocco, this interview thinks through ways to expand these networks and the knowledge production attached to them across localities in the wider Maghrib. The project questions the historiographical focus on north-south movements, and in its place adds a new east-west perspective that transcends stubborn political divides and sheds light on the ways in which a dynamic cultural and intellectual sphere developed, spread, and was sustained across the Ottoman/Moroccan Maghrib. Peter Kitlas is currently an Assistant Professor of History at the American University of Beirut. His research focuses on the intellectual and cultural history in eighteenth-century North Africa as told through Arabic and Ottoman-Turkish sources. Exploring the intersection of scribal practice and diplomatic knowledge production in Morocco, his first monograph rethinks the influence of Islamic thought on Mediterranean conceptualizations of diplomacy. Peter has served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco and conducted research in North Africa, Spain, Croatia and Turkey through the support of fellowships from SSRC and Fulbright-Hays. His written work has been published in The Journal of Early Modern History, Mediterranean Studies Journal, The Journal of North African Studies, and The Encyclopedia of Islam Three. This episode was recorded via Zoom on the 25th of October, 2023, at the Centre d'Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) s with Luke Scalone, CEMAT Chargé de Programmes. We thank our friend Ignacio Villalón for his guitar performance for the introduction and conclusion of this podcast. Production and editing: Lena Krause, AIMS Resident Fellow at the Centre d'Etudes Maghrébines à Tunis.
**Content Warning: This episode includes discussion of sexual and domestic violence. In this week's episode of then & now, guest host Professor Jared McBride is joined by Dr. Joy Neumeyer to discuss her recent book, A Survivor's Education. In the book, as well as this episode, Joy interweaves her own experiences of domestic abuse and the bureaucracy surrounding Title IX with Soviet and Russian history and examines gender and violence norms within the profession of history and academia writ large. Within the context of the #MeToo movement, Joy reflects on the enduring struggle that victims of abuse face due to the common propensity to amplify and repeat the narratives that are spread by perpetrators of violence. Informed by her extensive research on the history and application of Title IX—including the procedural tribulations of her own case—Joy intertwines the past and present and challenges the postmodernist approach to historical methodology with regard to truth narrativity and meaning. Joy concludes with the sentiment that historians can never be truly objective. Instead, they must expose their positionality and the personal, political, and social factors shaping their narrative about the past. If you are experiencing abuse or are concerned about someone you know, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) or visit http://www.thehotline.org. Joy Neumeyer is a journalist and historian of Russia and Eastern Europe. She received a PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a Fulbright Fellow in Russia and a Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. She has also worked as a reporter in Moscow and Warsaw. Her first book, A Survivor's Education: Women, Violence, and the Stories We Don't Tell (PublicAffairs, 2024), is an investigative memoir about abuse and the tension between narrative and evidence in understanding the past. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Nation, Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, New Left Review, and The Los Angeles Review of Books.Jared McBride is an assistant professor in the UCLA Department of History and is an expert on the history of Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe in the 20th century. His research examines mass violence, the Holocaust, interethnic conflict, nationalist movements, and war crimes prosecution. McBride's research has been supported by fellowships, including the Guggenheim, SSRC, and Fulbright-Hays. Todd Wood is the CEO of Christopher Todd Communities. Although his background may have been in bread production, he gained valuable insight into business in the process. He is now taking these learnings and applying them to the real estate and multifamily industries and challenging the current status quo. Christopher Todd Communities is built around an innovative product: the single story rental community (SSRC). They take built-to-rent to another level, building complete higher-end communities of separate homes to rent. The new approach is now changing how investors and local government look at new developments. What the #1 complaint is from multifamily residents Why being pet friendly is so important to renters How SSRCs reduce friction for previous homeowners that are now looking to rent How exactly an SSRC compares to a standard multifamily property in construction, rents, costs, and more (and it's looking good!) How SSRCs are able to get approval from local government faster and encouraged to build more Why it's important to be different in any investment, including multifamily Why SSRCs are better than apartments or individual rental homes How quickly the momentum behind SSRCs has built up compared to expectations Why building a strong brand will make a bigger difference than a focus on operations

Recorded on March 19, 2021, this video features a lecture by Evgeny Morozov, author of The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom and To Save Everything, Click Here: The Folly of Technological Solutionism. ABSTRACT One of Friedrich Hayek's most celebrated essays — "Competition as a Discovery Procedure" (1968) — tells us tantalizing little about the existence of other such procedures. Hayek's insistence that competition is the surest and most reliable technique of eliciting innovation is well reflected in today's digital landscape, dominated as it is by digital platforms, with their stated goal of facilitating market exchange. Yet, beyond Hayek's favorite bugbear of central planning, there surely must be other ways of "discovery" — even if they do not currently "scale" as well as the techniques of competition. This talk will explore the intellectual and political benefits of placing "discovery" at the center of our debate about the future of the digital public sphere and suggest potential directions for adequate policy-making on the issue. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Evgeny Morozov is the author of The Net Delusion (2011) and To Save Everything, Click Here (2013). He is also the founder and the publisher of The Syllabus, a knowledge curation initiative. He holds a PhD in History of Science from Harvard University. This lecture is presented as part of the SSRC-sponsored research initiative, "Solidarity and Strife: Democracies in a Time of Pandemic,” co-organized by the UC Berkeley D-Lab and Social Science Matrix. This event was also co-sponsored by the Algorithmic Fairness and Opacity Group.
