Deeptech startups build their business models on high-tech innovations in AI, engineering, quantum computing, and more. While they demand significant upfront capital and longer development cycles, their disruptive solutions have the potential to generate high returns. In this episode of EY FinTech and bEYond, we present the second installment of our Startup Academy series, where we focus on understanding venture capital and explore the key criteria for investing in startups, with a particular emphasis on deeptech. Together with industry experts, Andreas Fischer, Founding Partner of First Momentum Ventures, and Thomas Youmans, Co-Founder & CEO of Rhoman Aerospace—who is also a former participant of the EY Startup Academy 2022 and winner of our Audience Award—we discuss why startups should consider venture capital, which types of startups benefit most from it, and how venture capital compares to other financing options. The EY Startup Academy is a six-week program which provides selected startups with the opportunity to advance their business models, participate in a series of workshops and fireside chats as well to access a partner network of investors, companies and other relevant actors in the startup ecosystem. The international program aims to prepare startups to become investor ready and provide them with support and expertise on their journey from idea to exit. The 8th batch of the EY Startup Academy specifically focused on FinTech and Tech startups active in AI, Open & Embedded Finance, ESG, and Anti-Money Laundering & FinCrime.  Hosts: Anna Caroline Gran, Senior Consultant Strategy & Transactions, and Caroline Peters, Senior Consultant Business Consulting. You probably won't recognized Doug Levin by name, but by the end of the day, he will likely have impacted your life in some small, unnoticeable but very important way. As the founder and CEO of Black Duck Software, Doug was responsible for creating a company that led to an entire segment of the industry focused on both making open source software license compliant and secure from malware and viruses -- something we all admittedly take for granted. Having sold the company several years ago, Doug now teaches a course at Harvard Business School called "Startup Academy", and writes a blog and records a podcast called "Lessons from a Startup Life". He also runs a venture fund which focuses on tech startups, specifically in the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity. Doug was kind enough to sit down with me recently and explain the basic concepts, the importance and some other fun facts and features of both the world of AI and Cybersecurity the startups he's nurturing and funding. I learned a ton from this conversation, and Doug has a knack for making a complex (and potentially boring!) topic interesting and entertaining. For more details about Doug's interesting and varied work experience, his updated Wikipedia page is located here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Levin and his LinkedIn page is located here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bduck1/

Together they own a rental property business with 18 units, a wine & liquor store, and an online coaching & training membership site for entrepreneurs. Click to tweet: Ariana Sylvester of @serialstartupco is sharing her story on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/207 #inspiration Playing Small Moment Ariana was taking care of two young children while also running a real estate business and a liquor store with ease. When it was time for her and her husband, Tom, to transition their in-person life coaching to the online world, Ariana struggled. She was unsure of her role in this new online business as Tom was more of the business strategist, and she felt people would rather hear his information. Ariana felt the pressure from herself and her husband to contribute more, but she was at a loss as to how she could help. Tom often calls her out when she is undervaluing herself, and this was no exception. Ariana forgot she was running two businesses on her own and she was finally able to see that she had something to offer their community. The Wake Up Call As Ariana and Tom were revamping their online business, which happened to coincide with the birth of their second child, Ariana found herself overwhelmed and miserable. With a 6 month old baby, she was understandably emotional and exhausted. Ariana never said anything, and taking care of the children and doing the bare minimum with the businesses, while doing her best to try and fake that she was okay. In the midst of the chaos, Ariana looked at her life and realized she was unhappy. It took a week or two to talk to Tom about her feelings. Ariana didn’t want to add to his stress, but without clueing him into her feelings he would be left in the dark. This situation was rough, but it gave Tom and Ariana an opportunity to revisit their goals and improve the systems they had in place Style of Leadership Ariana defines herself as a bit of a diplomatic leader. She likes to feel connected to people and give them a relaxed and cool environment. Her style is the opposite of Tom’s, who is more of a project management person who asks the hard questions. Ariana likes it to be light, but she will still tell the truth in a more sensitive fashion. As an employer, she is more laid back. There is a binder at her brick and mortar businesses with listed expectations and the employees are given leeway to be their own person inside the business. What Are You Excited About? Ariana and her husband have a startup academy. It takes people through the five stages of the very beginning of starting a business, through operating it and then growing it to scale. Recently, they took out a piece of their academy as a teaser, a Start Up Roadmap Checklist. This checklist takes you through the phases and each step inside the phase before you start a business through starting the business. They are also rolling out a new free trial for the academy so they can help more people. Biggest Leadership Challenge One of the biggest challenges that Ariana and Tom face in their business is that they don’t get their message out as affectively in the online community as they do in-person. Leadership Practice Ariana likes to really listen to what people are saying and put herself in their shoes so she can ask herself what she can do to help. Advice For Younger Self Ariana was always confident in most areas, but not all. Ariana would say to her younger self, “Be yourself to the fullest. Say what you’re thinking even if it’s the unpopular view point.” Inspirational Quote “Be the kind of leader that you would follow.” Links FB Community: http://serialstartups.co/fbcommunity Startup Academy: http://serialstartups.co/join Email: ariana@serialstartups.co    If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe in iTunes or Stitcher Radio and never miss out on #inspiration and community!
