MY BODY-SURFING scare had reminded me of an episode in my childhood friendship with Matthew, one that I would much rather have forgotten. In the following days, he kept popping into my thoughts like an advertising jingle. Almost against my will, I found myself wondering about him, and then trying to construct a likely life for him, based on the boy I had known: a dour little fellow, pale and fretful, convinced that most people are contemptible, that most things will turn out badly. ... Todays guest is Tom Morey the inventor of the "Morey Boogie" Bodyboard. Tom is a creative surf designer, inventor and theorist from Southern California. Tom was born in Detroit in 1935. His family moved to Laguna Beach when he was 9 and he started surfing Main Beach on a "Surf Matt". He then moved to Santa Monica and began doing "stand-up surfing" at Malibu Point. In 1958 he received a BA in Mathematics from USC and became an engineer for Douglas Aircraft. In 1969 he quit Douglas to start "Morey Surfboards". One year later he formed "Morey-Pope Surfboards" with San Diego Surf designer Karl Pope. Morey and Pope created innovative board designs such as the "Trisect" ... a travel ready, three piece board that came with its own suitcase. Morey helped develop "Slipcheck" a surfboard traction aerosol spray-on used as an alternative to surfboard wax. He invented the W.A.V.E. set, the first commercially successful removable fin system. In 1965 Tom created the "Tom Morey Invitational" Surfings first cash prize contest worth $1,500. It was a nose riding contest held in Ventura, an event that attracted all the hot surfers of the time like Mikey Munoz and Mike Hynson. Morey pushed articles for Surfer Magazine on a wide range of topics including surf contests, wave formation, riding techniques, health and artificial surf (wave pools). In a Surfer magazine article from 1971 Tom proclaimed "I am Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Alexander Gram Bell and Bob Simmons". Morey gave new life to prone surfing in 1973 by marketing his 2 year old invention called the "Morey Boggie" a 4 foot ,soft bellyboard made mostly out of closed-cell polyethylene packing foam. Easier, cheper and safer to ride than surfboards, "Boggie Boards" soon became very popular with the kids and the tourists. 80,000 units were shipped in 1977 just before Morey sold the "Boggie" to American Toy Giant "KRANSCO". Sale more than quadrupled by the end of the decade and the "Boggie Boards" were soon available in thousands of coastal grocery stores and surf shops. By the early 80's Bodyboarding had its own identity separate from surfing. Bodyboarding is described as the most popular form of surfing, as bodyboards outsell surfboards by huge margins. "Bellyboarding" is the original form of "Bodysurfing" dating back hundreds if not thousands of years, it was all but not dead in the 60's. Stand-up surfing was the most popular way to ride a wave back then with knee boarding a distant second. The "Bodyboard", as all Boggie type craft would soon be called was more than just a wave tool. According to Tom "For anybody to be a graduate of this planet" Morey said "it is essential for them to learn this activity". Millions of Boggies and Boggie knock offs were in the water in the mid 80's. Earlier Tom and Mike Doyle co developed "Morey-Doyle" soft top surfboards. Tom has been in many surf movies and documentaries such as "Golden Breed", "Blazing Longboards", "The Liquid Stage", and "Endless Summer 2". Tom was listed by Surfer magazine as one of the most influential surfers of the century.

Tales from the Cobblestones

In a traitorous act to bodysurfers, Newport Beach Lifeguard Chief Bob Reed asked the City Council in 1962 to permanently close the Wedge because the world's most dangerous bodysurfing spot was, well, too dangerous. The council voted 6-1 to approve the new ordinance to ban bodysurfing at the Wedge. But at the next City Council meeting, where the ordinance would get a required second reading (usually a formality), bodysurfers turned out en masse to prevent the proposed ban from becoming law. Here's the story.

What's up to my Bolivarian Bearcats and Zesty Zooty* Zebras! This episode is the fifth installment of the Crafting Sobriety from the Chaos of Alcoholism series. If you're still with me on this journey, thank you for persisting and sharing this endeavor of recollection and reflection with me. I appreciate every one of you. This episode will wrap up my personal story of achieving freedom from the bottle through blood (quite a bit of blood really), sweat and tears. To be totally honest with you, this was not an easy series to create. It's with a certain sense of calm relief that I conclude my story. I am still inviting at least one more person (friend of the show... special surprise) to come on the pod and share their story, and that should be next week. Also exciting: this episode I debut Dykotomi's new custom track just for the BNP, Magpie Mambo. He did such a good job with this track. Think if Cuban Mambo had a tryst with Filthy Bass. It rips. Big thank you to Dykotomi for continuing to support the BNP with his talent and generosity of spirit (and wubs, and whomps.... and untz). Check out Dykotomi on Soundcloud, he has bangers for days: https://soundcloud.com/dykotomi.Generosity of Untz. I look forward to seeing the inaugural Bass Festival in 2021 that lifts that name. You're most welcome, future festie planner. The moon is busily waxing! It will be full on Halloween, so strap in for that. The next week is an auspicious time to set goals and intentions for the next moon cycle. Bodysurfing is one of the oldest water sports where surfers ride waves with just their body. Bodysurfers ride with the wave, on their belly, versus on top of it. Nowadays the sport is quickly gaining popularity with plenty of competitions popping up all across the globe. The most beautiful part is you don't need any special training - anyone can do it! Be warned however, it may make you feel like a kid again. After a bodysurfing injury left Don with multiple surgeries he soon began to focus his energies elsewhere. Don was a professional fire-fighter and an active member of his local Surf Life Saving Club at Coogee Beach, NSW, Australia; the beach was where he spent his youth. He was also a strong swimmer who competed in many different sporting events. In 1983 he won the title of the World Surf Life Saving Body-surfing Champion. Through these endeavors and after several trips to Hawaii in the mid 80’s, while competing regularly in bodysurfing contests, he became interested in water flow and fluid dynamics, thus allowing the DMC Fins idea to take root. Don’s idea was to design and create a type of swim propulsion fin (or flipper) that would revolutionize his chosen sport. The Hydro Finz were born. The design of the fin was unique, as it’s “V Rail" design gave it the edge on the competition and proved functional in wave riding, particularly deep hollow tubes. The V Rail acted like small surfboard fins, only with 8 edges to add traction, instead of 2 to 3 fins found on surfboards. Don travelled extensively to secure distributors for his one and only product and due to its unique patented qualities and performance, DMC gained sales and recognition worldwide. Since then over a million pairs of Hydro fin products have been sold in over 20 countries. DMC now has several different models of fins and offers fins for swimmers of the pool and ocean. Don’s bodysurfing and swimming knowledge combined, plus product innovation, have created a line of products that suit the beginner to the serious aquatic athlete. In recent years Don won another World Championship for Bodysurfing in his 'Masters' age group and qualified as a swim coach. "I don't think you have to be someone who can swim like an olympic swimmer," she said. "You just have to be able to see when the waves are coming, when is the right time to take off, what's the right time to make that commitment and the right time to get out and that's something you can learn with experience and there's lots of people willing to help you learn that." -Meredith Rose, Three time World Bodysurfing Champion FB: @DMCFins | I:#DMCFins | Twitter @DMCFins | YouTube: DMCVids | https://dmcfins.com

We are joined in studio this episode of the podcast by Ryan Masters ( @ryanmasters831 ); poet, writer, and big wave bodysurfer. Ryan’s bodysurfing career has taken him around the world sharing breaks with THE biggest names in the sport. This is the first time we have interviewed someone who been down the face of Mavericks, and the story is harrowing. The tradition continues of guests bringing their A game when coming on the show. We really get into the whole spectrum of bodysurfing related topics; fins, food, fear, and injury. The Santa Cruz Bodysurfing Association  “The Santa Cruz Bodysurfing Association was established in 1983 by Tom Mader, Julie Davis, and Horst Wolf.  These three shared a love for the perfect “A-frame” wave at Sunny Cove Beach in Santa Cruz, and decided to host a contest to promote the sport, with Churchill Fins as the main sponsor.  With safety and fun as the main focus of the Santa Cruz Bodysurfing Association, it didn't take long for this contest to become a favorite event for bodysurfers from all over the world.  Soon, the SCBSA expanded to two contests a year:  the Cold Water Classic in the late fall (featuring ice cubes down your wetsuit!) And, the California Championships, usually held in the Spring.  Both of these contests were legendary in the bodysurfing world due to the FUN side of the competition.  Events such as the Tandem and Pure were introduced as a way for participants to have as much time in the water as possible.  These events are still the favorites at SCBSA contests, sometimes drawing over 20 swimmers in the water at a time!  Also introduced by the SCBSA were new moves such as the “death cradle,” the “submarine,” the “Nixon,” and the “salute.”  Aside from contests, the SCBSA has taken a part in local events such as Save Our Shores, Surfrider Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The Association has hosted a Wave Festival, a Porch to Porch bicycle event, ski trips, group trips to international bodysurfing competitions, and more.  For information of the SCBSA contests and events, see the links above.  Most important, be safe and have fun in the water!” California Bodysurfing Championships ENTER THE CONTEST HERE --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cappodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cappodcast/support
