Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of breaking ground in the vatican and his attempts to modernize the Catholic church. Francis also left a lasting impact on Canada, with a 2022 trip to apologize for the church's role in the residential school system. Host Cormac Mac Sweeney speaks with Emma Anderson, a professor of religious studies at the University of Ottawa, about the tenure of Francis, what comes next in the process to pick a new pope, and could a Canadian be in the running? Pope Francis papacy is considered the most progressive to date. But as he fights an extended illness, the process for electing a new pope has likely already begun. What mark has the current pope made on the more than one billion Catholics around the world, what's involved in choosing his successor, and in what direction might a new pope lead the Catholic Church? For insight, we welcome: Michael W. Higgins, author of "The Jesuit Disruptor: A Personal Portrait of Pope Francis," and Emma Anderson, University of Ottawa professor in the Department of Classics and Religious Studies.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's fascinating episode features singer, songwriter and guitarist, Miki Berenyi. In 1987, Miki met Emma Anderson, a previous guest on Synthetic Dreams and formed the band, Lush. The group went on to release three critically acclaimed albums on legendary record label, 4AD. The band officially split in 1996, but reformed for a series of well received live shows in 2016.In 2018, Miki formed a new band called, Piroshka, which featured her partner Kevin McKillop (aka Moose) Micheal Conroy and former Elastica drummer, Justin Welch. The group released two albums on the always excellent Bella Union label.Miki's memoir Fingers Crossed, was published by Nine Eight Books In September 2022. It's extremely well written, funny, and, in parts, very moving - well worth a read. In recent years, Miki has been recording and playing shows as part of the Miki Berenyi Trio, which features Moose and guitarist Oliver Cherer. We discuss, amongst other things, the making of their truly brilliant debut album, ‘Tripla', which comes out on April 4th via Bella Union records.https://mikiberenyitrio.bandcamp.comMiki Berenyi Trio - 8th Deadly Sin (Official Video)Lush - Sweetness and Light (Official Video)Lush - Single Girl (Official Video)Lush - Ladykillers

Last year, Lush lead singer Miki Berenyi released one of the greatest memoirs ever written by a rock star, of which there are many. She grew up in the UK with a Hungarian dad and a Japanese mom who soon divorced with her mom becoming an actress and moving to Hollywood, while her dad remained a freelance writer living in relative squalor. Miki found her tribe in the local music scene which led to her and Emma Anderson forming Lush. After three solid albums and the tragic suicide of drummer Chris Acland, the band called it quits. Miki retells all of this in amazing detail in Fingers Crossed in 2022 as well as touring with Lollapalooza, working with Robin Guthrie, her new band Piroshka, and the inherent drama (sex, drugs and rock and roll) that come with being in a band. I can't recommend this book highly enough and this conversation is a revelation. Enjoy!  www.mikistuff.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

In the mid-1980s, before she became known for fronting the band Lush, Miki Berenyi put out five issues of Alphabet Soup fanzine (“It may be crap but it's only 5p”) alongside her then-bestie and future band-mate, Emma Anderson. Meantime, before she started Sarah Records, Clare Wadd put out multiple issues of Kvatch fanzine. This podcast, hosted by former Jamming! editor Tony Fletcher, marks the first time ANY of the three have ever had a conversation with each other. Over the course of an hour-plus chat the three of them discuss:Why Miki had a photo of Tony on hand should he randomly e-mail her introducing himself.Clare's upbringing in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and starting a fanzine as a way in to the “independent” music world.Miki's school years in Central London, following Culture Club and Haircut 100, and starting a fanzine as a way to combat shyness. The lack of girls producing fanzines in the early-mid-1980s.Miki's “nuts” upbringing, how it created a “seize the day” element in her, and how that resulted in her and Emma doing Alphabet Soup.Being sexually harassed as a teenage girl selling fanzines.Alphabet Soup being “silly & smutty” vs Kvatch being “worthy.”The lack of competitiveness among fanzines. The challenge has been running annually for over 10 years and more than 30 billion steps have been recorded in that time.  But, as we'll hear from our guests, the challenge is more than just a leader board. In this episode of Voices of the Walk, five participants in this year's spring Step Count Challenge tell us why they are taking part and what they hope to get from it. We hear from ACOSVO's Pat Armstrong, Scotways' Richard Barron, Paths for All's Emma Anderson, Parkinson UK's Lorna Fraser and Joe Hamill from Bells Food Group. They talk about how walking has helped them connect with their colleagues, provide space to think and clear the head, and challenge themselves to build walking in and around their busy working day.   www.stepcount.org.uk

The first time I went up in the air, people said: “when you come down, you're going to get bitten by this bug” and I completely understood. It's such an incredible feeling seeing the world from a different perspective, so I knew I had to pursue this. -Emma Anderson She's 20 years old now, but five years ago, Emma Anderson shared her passion for aviation and for learning how to fly an airplane someday with her mother, Tina. Instead of discouraging her daughter, Tina helped her fulfill this dream. In this episode, Emma tells the story about her first time “up in the air” at 15 and the fear/joy of getting her pilot's license, along with her first solo flight. When the opportunity presented itself to purchase their town's local flight center this mother and daughter joined forces and are now co-owners of the Beverly Flight Center in Beverly, MA. This is a story about the connection between a mother and her daughter, and it is proof that the best thing we can do for our children is to support their dreams, and in this case, give them wings to fly. Says mom Tina, “we're trying to get more women in aviation. Right now, only 4% of all pilots are female and we're trying to grow that number. “ Amen, sisters. Emma Anderson is Head of Solutions Delivery at Planet, a payments company based in Ireland, that provides services to companies like Starbucks, Adidas and Kate Spade. It’s an industry we don’t often talk about - yet it’s played a vital role in enabling our ability to make online payments and digital transactions. Emma had several stops along the way to get to this point, but her original career goal had nothing to do with the payments industry. Her parents were missionaries, and that inspired Emma to pursue being a medical missionary. But Emma struggled to make it through the rigorous and demanding coursework of medical school at the University of Birmingham in the UK. So, she dropped out and started working as a sales and operations coordinator for a heavy machinery company. In 2007, Emma was introduced to the endless possibilities in the world of digital payments when she accepted a position at Barclays. And then pivoted to a Senior Marketing Manager role at Visa to promote digital payment products and services to greater Europe. And eventually took a position with Elavon that involved less travel when she needed to think seriously about starting a family. Emma absolutely loved working at Elavon, a subsidiary of U.S. Bank, until some changes shook up the company’s focus on ethical business practices. Knowing the importance of transparency in the financial world, Emma spoke up as a whistleblower at the risk of more losses to the company and ruining her relationship with her boss. Honesty is a big part of Emma’s story, so when she was later offered a new job in the UAE around the same time she finally got pregnant, she knew she had to turn it down. After the birth of their first child, Emma then took a position with Planet where she works today. Emma’s story is all about the importance of honesty and trusting God when the outcome looks different than what we imagined. For Flourishing's Sake

Welcome to Episode 46. As I write and record this week’s episode and think about the phrase “the greater good” in the title, I can’t help being momentarily distracted and chuckling to myself.  If you’ve seen the dark comedy film Hot Fuzz, you’ll know what I mean.  If not…I recommend it, and until you’ve watched it, just ignore me laughing to myself for a moment as I remember how the phrase “the greater good” (spoiler alert!) was used in the film! My inspiration for today’s topic, however, comes from reading two articles recently that talked quite negatively about the origins of Positive Psychology as a pretty selfish endeavour focused purely on individual wellbeing. In her article for The Conversation, researcher Emma Anderson describes two views of happiness - one focusing on strong societal bonds and interdependence leading to state welfare provisions, and another, which she has found in her research to be more common, being an individualistic view of “working on one’s happiness”.  Emma cites growing criticisms of Positive Psychology, which seems to negate social injustices, poverty, exploitation etc and essentially blame the victims because they’re not putting in the effort to be happy. I get this.  My very first essay for my Masters in Applied Positive Psychology was about the criticisms of this field and there is some validity in accusing Positive Psychology of elitism, though I would also argue that even from its inception, the proponents of Positive Psychology such as Martin Seligman talked about societal flourishing, so perhaps the issue has been more in interpretation than design.  That said, the second article related to this criticism that I’ve read in the last week was a research paper by Michael Hogan, published very recently, in May this year. In this paper, he cites the models of what’s known as “second wave Positive Psychology”, in which there is much more focus on collaboration towards collective wellbeing, and where negative emotions such as anger and sadness can drive societal transformation.  Emma Anderson’s article does, in fact, end with an expression of hope that, as we return to some kind of normality, we also retain our “renewed sense of community and activism” and that our “more outward-looking version of wellbeing continues and thrives”. I hope that, too, and I firmly believe that schools and our education system as a whole have a large role to play in this. When I developed my “LeAF - Learn and Flourish” (1) model of whole school positive education, I looked at many models around the world and the most comprehensive ones included elements of schools supporting their local communities and encouraging good citizenship in their students.  Character Education, which forms a significant element of Positive Education, also encourages the development of strengths and virtues that make us far more focused on the collective greater good than merely on ourselves.  Collaboration features highly in my model of whole school Positive Education as stakeholder engagement at every level is essential for such an approach to be truly comprehensive and effective. I know that, for my part, and all the people I have worked and studied with in the field of Positive Psychology, this field has never been about a selfish drive for hedonistic happiness, but rather a focus on eudaimonia, which has much broader societal connotations. As individuals, we have limited control and influence over national policy, though of course those of us lucky enough to have a democratic voice through voting in elections have some level of influence that way.  Additionally we have seen, particularly recently, the power of peaceful protest. But as educators, we have a huge opportunity to shape a better, more collaborative and altruistic world. We can start by creating schools where these values are strong. We can demonstrate these values in our interactions with our colleagues, our students, their parents and the wider community.  We can ensure our schools’ policies foster these values and that these are reflected in those schools’ cultures. In my book, For Flourishing’s Sake, I give plenty of examples of how teachers and school leaders have done this in a wide range of educational settings.  It can be done, and if we start in schools, we’re laying the foundations for the future.  So as you plan for the next academic year, or as you go to work in school today if your school is currently open, consider the small steps you can take as an individual to support a more collaborative and supportive culture within your school. It can start with something as simple as a smile and a small act of kindness. What seed will you plant today for a flourishing tomorrow?   ------------------------- If you have found this episode useful, please give it a five star rating on iTunes to help it reach more people and please spread the word. Also, if you haven’t already, remember to subscribe so you never miss an episode. For Flourishing’s Sake is available on iTunes / Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts and Deezer. The book, by the same name, came out on Kindle on 18th June and will be out on paperback on 21st August. You’ll find it on all major online book retailer sites.  It’s jam-packed with evidence-based strategies for whole school positive education with case study examples from a wide range of schools from around the world. So why not order your Kindle copy now, or pre-order your paperback so you’ll receive it as soon as it’s published? Hello ladies! On today's episode, I talk about the best ways to set up a healthy eating environment in your own home. Food studies have shown that our food environment directly influences our food decisions. Oftentimes, an unhealthy food environment leads to mindless eating just because of its setup. Therefore, in today's episode, I want to share with you small changes you can make to your home environment that can lead to major changes for the better in the way that you eat. Because the kitchen is where most food decisions in the house are made, this is where your best investment for change will be. Therefore, I recommend focusing on 3 specific areas in your kitchen that, when better organized, can lead to more intentional and strategic eating. 3 Areas in Your Kitchen to Better Organize: Kitchen Counters: Minimize their clutter to reduce stress and visual exposure to unhealthy food Pantry: Downsize large snack quantities and streamline snacking options in order to prevent temptation and reduce food decisions Fridge: Ignore the common fridge design and keep healthy foods at eye-level and grouped according to easy, healthy food combinations Along with discussing these key points, I also expand on additional ways to make these three areas best designed for healthy food decisions. When it comes to weight-loss, eating less sugar, getting rid of cravings, or other healthy eating goals, unfortunately having good intentions is not always enough. Instead, we need to think more about the situations and environments we're putting ourselves in and how by being mindful of these environments, we can gain better control over what we put into our bodies. What You'll Learn in This Podcast Episode: How our environments can lead to mindless eating Why people eat more in a disorganized kitchen vs. a tidy kitchen Tips for visually exposing yourself to healthy food options Why bulk packaging can lead to increased, unhealthy snacking Suggestions for how to make healthy food in your fridge easily accessible for those on the go Helpful Links: Emma Anderson's “Live Life Organized with Emma” blog: https://www.llowithemma.com/blog/ Episode 23 - “Organizing Your Kitchen with Emma Anderson”: https://dafnachazin.com/organize-your-kitchen/ For tips on purging your kitchen, find my “PCOS-Proof Kitchen Guide” at: dafnachazin.com/pcosplan Questions, or interested in becoming a client? By 1994, shoegaze was no longer the hip, underground music scene the UK press was enamored with just a few years prior. The Britpop of Blur, Oasis, Elastica, and Pulp had taken over, My Bloody Valentine had collapsed, and blissing out on feedback and layers of guitar was no longer novel. Smartly, the singing/songwriting/guitar-slinging tandem of Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson of Lush evolved, and on 1994's Split, the band toe the line between the underground dream pop and shoegaze sounds that got them started, while mixing in some less noisy and more melodic tunes. Welcome back to The Slim & Satisfied Podcast! Today, I am joined by professional organizer, Emma Anderson. Emma works with women, particularly moms, to help them create systems for themselves and their families in their homes designed to eliminate overwhelm and establish a better sense of peace. Today, she shares with us how organizing your home (but specifically your kitchen) can help you to better meet your healthy eating goals. Emma explains how organization and the accomplishment of goals are closely linked. From her experience, she has found that when someone is organized, they are more likely to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. This is because organization allows you to create more space and therefore more opportunity, it can reduce the overwhelm of clutter that adds stress to the environment, and it trains the brain to be more decisive. Emma also outlines the 4 areas to focus on when organizing the kitchen that will best encourage healthy eating habits. These include: Dishes: Keep only what you need to better streamline your eating Pantry: Decant the food/ remove it from the container whenever possible Countertops: Use these to keep your goals visible Fridge: Reorganize according to your goals and keep healthy foods at eye-level Emma shares advice for ways to begin organizing these spaces and the payoff of doing so. Rather than diving in all at once, however, she encourages us to recognize which area contributes to their biggest weakness in the kitchen and begin there. By doing so, you'll be able to create a consistent system of organization that can then continue to be built upon in the future. What You'll Learn in This Podcast Episode: How organization influences decision making Ways to begin integrating systems and organizational processes into your daily life Advice for those who are indecisive on how to begin decluttering their lives Tips for how to create a kitchen that is organized according to your healthy eating goals Helpful Links: Emma's website: Live Life Organized with Emma Join Emma on IG: @llo_with_emma Questions? In Diversifying Barbie and Mortal Kombat, the third edited volume in the series that includes From Barbie to Mortal Kombat and Beyond Barbie and Mortal Kombat, the authors and contributors expand the discussions on gender, race, and sexuality in gaming. They include intersectional perspectives on the experiences of diverse players, non-players and designers and promote inclusive designs for broadening access and participation in gaming, design and development. Contributors from media studies, gender studies, game studies, educational design, learning sciences, computer science, and game development examine who plays, how they play, where and what they play, why they play (or choose not to play), and with whom they play. This volume further explores how the culture can diversify access, participation and design for more inclusive play and learning. Yasmin Kafai is Professor of Learning Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a researcher and developer of tools, communities, and materials to promote computational participation, crafting, and creativity across K-16. Her recent books include “Connected Gaming: What Making Video Games Can Teach Us About Learning and Literacy,” and “Connected Code: Why Children Need to Learn Programming,” and edited volumes such as “Textile Messages: Dispatches from the World of Electronic Textiles and Education” and “Diversifying Barbie and Mortal Kombat: Intersectional Perspectives and Inclusive Designs for Gaming.” She coauthored the 2010 National Educational Technology Plan for the US Department of Education. Kafai earned a doctorate in education from Harvard University while working with Seymour Papert at the MIT Media Lab. She is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and past President of the International Society for the Learning Sciences. Gabriela Richard is an Assistant Professor of Learning, Design and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. Her research focuses on understanding the intersections between culture, experience, media, and learning, particularly in the areas of online and emerging technologies, including gaming. Her work has focused on understanding the ways that gender, race/ethnicity, and sexuality are defined and experienced in game culture and online gaming in order to inform inclusive and equitable designs for learning with serious games, as well as play and participation with gaming and emerging technology more broadly. She has written extensively about games and learning, as well as youth learning, engagement, and computational thinking with electronic textiles, game design, and online communities. Martyrdom, writes Emma Anderson, is anything but random. In beautiful prose and spectacular historical detail, The Death and Afterlife of the North American Martyrs (Harvard University Press, 2013), takes readers on a journey of more than 300 years, exploring how a group of eight Frenchmen were selected from the amongst the thousands of victims of a brutal seventeenth-century encounter between natives and Europeans to become celebrated martyrs. Anderson explores the details of the deaths themselves, as well as the meaning of ‘good deaths’ in Iroquois and European cultures, before turning to the saints’ afterlives, their continual remembering and reinvention in the “popular, protean collective imagination from their time to our own.” Myriad voices come together in the book’s pages, each one claiming and contesting the meaning of the Jesuits’ deaths, continually refashioning the religious and national identities bound up in the politics of martyrdom.
