What are several glaring anachronisms in Walt Disney World's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride?On this episode of Distory, we motor on through the first half of Track B in the extinct Walt Disney World version of Mr. Toad, looking for the details and history that have been lost over time. After discussing some silly portraits (and a disappointing motto) in Toad Hall, we crash into the library and find some anachronistic quills, a few connections to Disneyland, and a surprising origin of a word connected to a piece of armor. We then fly out into the barnyard to explore some recycled Bruce Bushman concepts, learn about curly pig tails, and admire some eyelashes. Kirk gives us a lesson on Disney's favorite chickens, Kate gives a rundown of some repeated audio animatronics, and we end this episode toasting Disney's incredible illusioneer Yale Gracey, who brought us chicken mobiles, pouring tea, mylar flames. and so much more. Did Disney World's Mr. Toad steal design elements from another popular Disney attraction? On this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we head back to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom to motor our way through Track A of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. But we don't get very far on this madcap adventure, since there are so many details to see in Toad's abode. We start by exploring some of the 3D sculptures and the meaning behind the portraiture in the grand hall before crashing our way into the trophy room. As we wind our way around this unique scene, we find some petticoat duelists, a prop unique to Rolly Crump, and a few animals we've seen before. We wind down this episode in the kitchen, discussing the deeper meaning of the staging of the room and learning a little bit about animation history inspired by a tipsy maid before we screech to a halt and save more of Track A for next week. Mr. Toad moved to Florida for the opening of Walt Disney World... but he was never meant to be there. In this episode of Distory, we hop on over to the Magic Kingdom and explore the history behind why Mr. Toad became part of (yet another) Fantasyland. Along the way, we discuss Rolly Crump (the lead Imagineer of this version) and hear his take on the design of the Magic Kingdom and life in general so that we can more fully understand his work within this iconic attraction. After a thorough look around the exterior and queue, including comparing it to the Disneyland versions both past and present, we find some long-lost WED documents, analyze some changing motorcar designs, and debate the design choices of the character flats on either side of the two tracks. We finally come to a screeching halt just before entering Toad Hall to allow plenty of time in future episodes to dig into every detail we can find that made this classic ride so delightfully weird and wonderful.Join us LIVE on YouTube every Thursday at 10:30am Pacific/1:30pm Eastern for more Distory!Kate's Youtube: @disneyciceroneYou can also find us on Instagram, Facebook, and at disneycicerone.com & walruscarp.comView full video versions of each episode at Disney Cicerone's YouTube channel HERE OR on the Spotify version of our podcast.Distory T-shirts and StickersKate's SubstackKate's books on AmazonWalrusCarp T-shirts & MerchMOWD app

Even if you've been on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride a thousand times, we guarantee you've missed at least one of these details. In this episode of Distory, we slow down our motorcar to a snail's pace to analyze all of the elements inside Toad Hall in Disneyland's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. After looking over the toadally fun bookshelf puns, we speed away into the attraction, pausing to look at the decorations, portraits, clocks, decor, art, and architecture that are telling more of a story than you might realize. Kirk takes us on a journey through medieval heraldry and armor, Kate points out a hidden Mickey and discusses a failed fireplace effect (and its replacement) and eventually , we roll to a stop in the dining room with a surprisingly dapper Moley and a nod to the old 1955 version of this attraction. What do priest holes, artichokes, and old grape vines have to do with the current version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride? On this episode of Distory, we drive along down the road to the 1983 remodel of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Disneyland. Along the way, we take a detour to Storybookland Canal Boats, learn about the design influences of Toad Hall, and discover some details that many people miss in the newly designed facade. Kate takes us down some bizarre rabbit trails to talk about Tudor architecture, anodized aluminum chains, Tony Baxter's house, and the history of turnstiles, and Kirk shares some untold stories about the history of New Fantasyland before we roll to a stop just past the Toad statue (that looks a little different than it used to). With teetering tea trays, lazy signalmen, and dangerous rogue props, the first version of Disney's Mr. Toad was a wild ride, indeed. In this episode of Distory, we continue merrily on our way to somewhere in particular, and that would be 1955 to take a ride on Disney's original version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. As we hop in a hot rod and speed our way through Toad Hall, we discover through some rare photos of this attraction that some scenes are similar to what we have today… and some are drastically different. Using old concept art from Bruce Bushman as a guide to our mania, we go down bumpy streets, break through walls, and discover a few quirky characters along the way. Kate talks about lamps and lanterns, Kirk discusses the importance of using all the senses in dark rides, and we both find ourselves in a very hot place in the end (and explain exactly why this bizarre ending is in a family-friendly attraction). T.O.A.D Hall is arguably the jewel in Motueka's crown. What started off as a fruit and veggie shop on the town's main street has been transformed over the past decade into an organic farm-to-table operation and one of New Zealand's best loved cafes. Its owner and founder, however, Angie Morris - a Westport-born and educated former police officer - isn't your typical hospitality guru. She came into the industry after a career as a police diver - one of the country's first women to make it through the gruelling Royal New Zealand Navy selection process. She speaks to Kathryn about the police force, home schooling four children, and turning TOAD Hall into an institution.

Richard has done a number of challenges over the last few years to support the work of the RNIB and has just canoed the length of the River Thames single-handed for the RNIB. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Richard to find out why he wanted to canoe the Thames for the RNIB. This week we explore and listen to extracts of Kenneth Graham's (1908) children's classic The Wind in the Willows. The story follows of the lives of various (anthropomorphised) animals that live by a river, principally, through Mole (Moley) and the Water Rat (Ratty). Their friend, the wilful, spontaneous, and exuberant Toad (of Toad Hall), acts as (almost literally) the driver of the plot. Toad's escapades and recklessness result in the need for Moley and Ratty and their friend, the wise but curmudgeonly Badger, to come to his rescue. Graham's writing is lyrical and evocative and in this episode we enjoy his descriptions of the river. However, his work also has great depth to it. This story can read as an exploration of how we should live within our natural environment, challenging the growing disconnection between people and nature felt within the Victorian age. Graham, like many other writers of his time, was also fascinated with spirituality and religious experiences outside mainstream (Christian) religion. The Wind in the Willows contains a fascinating and powerful chapter ('The Piper at the Gates of Dawn') in which Ratty and Moley have a mystical experience with a transcendent figure. Graham's description, pre-dates, but beautifully expresses, the ideas of theologian Rudolf Otto and encountering the numinous, which Otto describes as a a non-sensory experience of a mystery that is at once terrifying whilst also being fascinating. Accomplished Disney author David Bossert has chronicled the lives of famous Disney figures in his previous titles, including executive Roy E. Disney and furniture designer and architect Kem Weber. In his latest book, Claude Coats: Walt Disney's Imagineer – The Making of Disneyland from Toad Hall to the Haunted Mansion and Beyond, Dave uncovers the story of the Disney Legend and Imagineer. Coates was best known as a gifted animator and later as a principal force behind the art direction and show design for attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean, it's a small word, Alice in Wonderland, and Adventure thru Inner Space, among numerous others. After much development and anticipation, the book debuts this fall. Joining host Brett Nachman on this episode of Notably Disney are Dave Bossert, the book's author, as well as Disney Imagineer Alan Coats, Claude's son, who provided the book's preface and was a pivotal force in its development. This title is an essential purchase and read for your Disney nonfiction collection. Claude Coats: Walt Disney's Imagineer – The Making of Disneyland from Toad Hall to the Haunted Mansion and Beyond is available for pre-order through The Old Mill Press. Today I'm talking to the wonderful actor Richard James about his experience of working on the 1996 film "The Wind in The Willows", directed by and starring Terry Jones, alongside Steve Coogan, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Victoria Wood, Stephen Fry, Michael Palin, and a whole host of British comedy legends. Richard spoke to me about being directed by a larger-than-life Terry Jones dressed as Toad, the chaos of filming the Weasel scenes at Toad Hall, and what he learned from being offered a bigger role than he auditioned for at such an early stage in his career. This fortnight, we're talking about the second episode of Season Two and everything that comes along with it. For us, that means plugging our new TikTok account(which Susannah is not happy about) a billion times, mispronouncing some guy's name(he was Lieutenant Courtenay, as well as being featured in two separate movies with Rupert Grint, neither of which was Harry Potter), and continuously genuinely confusing Richard Carlisle with Rupert Murdoch. There's a very thorough deep dive on Toad of Toad Hall that Susannah did back in July, and Susannah accidentally maybe spoils something for Hazel, which leads to two back-to-back fill-for-times.
Ben and Nick take a spirited ramble through Kenneth Grahame's masterpiece, The Wind in the Willows.
In which Mr Toad learns that the Stoats and the Weasels have taken possession of Toad Hall, and the Badger devises a daring plan to take back control of his beloved home.

Badger, Mole, Ratty and Toad enact their plan to take back Toad Hall. The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame Read aloud, produced, and with music composed by Stephen Alexander.
Grab your motorcar and the deed to Toad Hall, we're going a merrily journey to nowhere in particular. Join Ian & Tarabelle for an in-depth discussion of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, the most idiosyncratic and wonderful attraction in Disney Park history. While The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad served as a loose adaptation of The Wind and the Willows, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride largely abandons any connection to its source material. From Toad Hall to Hell, Ian & Tarabelle cover the ride in all in iterations including the original 1955 version and both tracks at Disney World, where it lived in a certain silly old bear took over in 1998. We love Pooh, but it's okay if you're still a little angry about the whole situation. This Christmas for Radio 3 five leading writers have picked a novel they love, and written an original piece of fiction imagining what happened to the characters after the story ends. For the six-year-old AL Kennedy, Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows provided firelight calm and comfort. She still has her childhood copy, bound up in green cloth with gold lettering, the only hardback she possessed at that age. This Christmas Day, she imagines what might have happened to Mole, Rat and Badger years after the Battle of Toad Hall. Producer: Camellia Sinclair

Today we are recapping Disneys 1949 film, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, The (film) The film begins in a library with actor Basil Rathbone telling the tale of The Wind in the Willows (from the book by Kenneth Grahame), about Mr. Toad, Squire of Toad Hall, whose love for transportation vehicles was insatiable. www.ObscureDisneyPodcast.com www.DisneyPatch.com www.Obscuri-D.com
Clare Balding starts the 20th year of Ramblings by walking with a listener who is so committed to exploring the countryside that she creates and publishes her own walking routes. Elaine Steane ran out of walks, so decided to invent her own. She's published a number of books including Milestones to Millstones and it's a route from this that we follow today. It skirts the Oxfordshire/Berkshire border and takes in Mapledurham Watermill - a working Mill that not only produces its own flour but also supplies 140 local homes with electricity. The Mill became famous when it featured in the film version of The Eagle Has Landed; Michael Caine's signature is apparently carved somewhere into the building's wooden structure. Later on, we skirt past (but can't quite see) Hardwick House. This was the inspiration for EH Shepard's illustrations of Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows. From there we head up into the Wild Woods, where we hear a reading from Wind in the Willows, before climbing a steep hill which takes us back to where we started at Whittles Farm. Elaine's love of mapping comes from her father. He was Harold Fullard, a renowned cartographer who was Editor of the Phillip's Modern School Atlas, the blue-canvas book that generations of school-children used to learn about the world. Elaine recalls earning a little pocket money by helping to create the index at home... it was a painstaking process. If you are reading this on the Radio 4 website, you can scroll further down to see links to Elaine's books, Mapledurham Water Mill and some photos of the walk. Producer: Karen Gregor
On this wild episode, Alex and Annie sneak into the Toad Hall Of Records while taking a tour of Toad Hall. The two snoop around the hallowed halls and discover some really awesome stuff about one of Fantasyland's most quaint and charming dark rides. So strap in, grab some shortbread cookies, and get ready for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride!
In our return episode, Jack and Kieran take aim at just about everyone and everything, riding on a wave of election euphoria to denounce, abuse and chastise anyone to the right of John McDonnell. Selections are discussed soberly, taxi drivers mocked viciously, and the Lib Dems celebrated for their 'Piff & Brexit' policy platform. We're back on our bullshit and loaded up for the next three weeks of campaigning.
Toad of Toad Hall.
Gather 'round while we elucidate THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD on this week's Disney Magic Hour. In 1949 Walt and Co released another package film that, instead of presenting one feature length tale, had two shorter stories contained within. First up is a rapid version of Kenneth Grahame's THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS were we meet J. Thaddeus Toad along with his trusty, if exasperated, friends MacBadger, Rat and Mole as they battle for the deed to Toad Hall which is in the hands of the dastardly Weasels. That is, if Mr. Toad can keep it together long enough to not sink and plans to do so. Following that we meet a lanky, bookworm by name of Ichabod Crane whom seems to be the smoothest character ever walk into Sleepy Hollow. Right up till Brom Bones tells the tale of the Headless Horseman by way of Bing Crosby's voice. As always we will ask three questions of the the film at the conclusion of our show and they are : 1) Does the film hold up? 2) Is it a film aimed to send a message or is it trying to elicit an emotional response? 3) What is the iconic shot of the film. Lots to cover and when you have Disney to discuss, you call on the best. This week we welcome Ryan P Wilson of the Main Street Gazette. You may recognize Ryan from his immaculate blog work at his website and from his numerous appearances on WDW Radio with Lou Mongello. We are extremely excited to have him here with us and hope you enjoy this week's episode of the DISNEY MAGIC HOUR!
The show starts with a whole load of news from Disneyland Paris, including pieces about Dreams!, Toad Hall and sales! It's time for the monthly pin discussion as we see Paris vs. Princesses! It's then over to you, as we discuss your ideas for what show you would like to see brought to Disneyland Paris and where it should be put on. Add in a Star Wars challenge from Mark to Steve and all you listeners, plus some talk of Alice's Curious Labyrinth and we have a jam packed 16th episode!
The Queuecast is the best I could come up with in an attempt to amalgamate the anticipation of heading off to SXSW on the weekend, with the inevitable queueing to get into stuff once there. Actually, that’s not quite true. There’s so much going on at places like SXSW that really, if the thing you want to see has an annoying queue (and for me they are never anything other than annoying) outside it, then you can always walk five minutes down the road, walk straight in untroubled, and see something else equally brilliant instead.Mrs. Toad is out there already, presumably having cocktails with young Ian who works at the label with me. In fact those two total fuckers are probably three or four margaritas down already, as you read this. Bastards. Anyhow, I get out on Saturday afternoon, and the gin will be flowing within moments, I promise you.The upside of this SXSW fun, which will no doubt irritate the shit out of people back home, is that Toad Hall once again becomes a recording studio while we are away. Both Rob St. John and Meursault will be making inroads into their next releases over the next fortnight, so hopefully the thought of that will calm your jealous rage at all the fun we are having in Texas. 01. Video - Vimeo - YouTube Photos - Flickr Session tracks - zip download (right click - save as) Interview podcast - mp3 - iTunes - Mixcloud This was recorded at Toad Hall in October 2012 with Woodpecker Wooliams, who releases with our friends Robot Elephant Records. She played at a BAD FUN night on the Friday at Henderson's at St. John's, and we were finally able to get this recorded on Sunday after the hangovers had subsided a little. We were rather short of personnel for this one, so the whole thing ended up being recorded and filmed by me and Ian, with only the one other body to help out - the awesome photographer Nic Rue, with whose work you are all probably very well familiar by now. For some reason Gemma only chose to play three songs, and we rather stupidly managed to run out of camera battery before the end of the third, so there is no session video for Crow, although the mp3 can be freely downloaded below as usual. And for the first time in a Toad Session you get to properly meet one of our two new cats, who we've had for over a year now, but who are not quite as determined as Floyd to make themselves the star of the goddam show at every available opportunity. Love them or loathe them, frogs have a place in popular culture, from ‘Kermit' to ‘Toad of Toad Hall'. The short, tailless body, large head, and long legs give a profile that is vaguely humanoid, but frogs are optimised for leaping rather than walking, a locomotor strategy that has been highly successful. Amongst amphibians, their body plan is unique, prompting questions as to its origin and evolutionary history. Some of the answers may be found in the fossil record of frogs, dating back 250 million years to the very beginning of the ‘Age of Dinosaurs'.
Video: Vimeo – YouTube Photos: Flickr – Blueback Hotrod Audio: below This was without a shadow of a doubt the most scary level of military efficiency that anything even slightly Toad-related has ever achieved. Mumford & Sons were playing to a sold-out Queen's Hall in the evening, so we had to have them in and out of the door within an hour and a half, and we actually bloody managed it! As the like of the Pictish Trail, who left Toad Hall completely plastered after his session, can testify, this isn't really what we're good at around here. So, not only did they go to extreme lengths to actually make time to record this, they did a fucking lovely job of it as well. If you watch the video for Untitled, embedded below, you'll see that they rattled our floors so hard that something actually falls off the shelves behind Marcus at the end of the video. Gavin has done a lovely job of the recording and mixing, and many thanks to Dylan for the photography and Matthew for help with the filming. As usual with the Toadcasts, there is a full set of pictures on our Flickr page, Dylan's own choices on his Blueback Hotrod page, freely downloadable and shareable mp3s of the session tracks below, a full podcast of the interview, with playlist at the bottom of the page, and videos of the individual songs themselves embedded below. I've also made a video of the whole day, with bits of interviews and excerpts from the songs, and that is embedded at the top of the page. Enjoy! This podcast is unconscionably late once more and again I am going to plead that there is a perfectly good reason for this. Today has been taken up with constant recording here at Toad Hall, and I myself have been finishing the video for the Honeytrap Toad Session which finally, finally will be making an appearance this time next week. My job is virtually finished, and it's messy, but it will be a corker. This podcast has no real theme, but I did let Neil choose most of the songs, so that gives the podcast something of a character of its own. I did make him be on a podcast with a Noah & the Whale song on it though. Ha haaa! That'll teach the trendy little bastard! Toadcast #89 - The Latecast 01. Hello and welcome back to the Toad Sessions. I was a little drunk when I noticed that Alela Diane was playing in Edinburgh as part of the Triptych Festival, so the idea of emailing her label and inviting her to do a Toad Session didn't seem quite so preposterous. In the morning, I thought I was mad and would be laughed at, but amazingly they agreed, and now here it is. This one was also recorded by Nick at Bananarow and he's done another amazing job - the songs sound absolutely gorgeous. Dylan's pictures can be found at the Flickr page, and we have some more videos at the Song, by Toad YouTube page. Here's the interview podcast, with the tracklisting at the bottom of the page. Toadcast #30 - Alela Diane & Mariee Sioux Toad Session Here are the sessions tracks themselves. The Cuckoo is a traditional song, and Dry Grass & the Shadows is from Alela's new album which should hopefully be out later this year. IT disasters in Toad Hall meant that this podacast was delayed so long that I ended up posting pretty much all of it on the blog before I got to record the thing and all the news was so outdated that I had to find some more news. Fortunately we have some pre-release splendidness from Elbow, Goldfrapp and Stephen Malkmus to make up for it. There’s also some excellent unsigned music to be had as well, from Maxwell Panther and Meursault, as well as some splendid new singles from Elle S’Appelle and Operahouse. So it’s late, but some of this stuff is really quite excellent. And then there’s LCD Soundsystem who have taken me so long to get into that I am only starting to even enjoy the album now, some eight months or so after its release. What a fuckwit. There’s a fairly detailed explanation of what is going to be happened with Song, by Toad Records in the new year as well, and how I am going to move these podcasts onwards and upwards. Unfortunately it takes the longest bloody link in recorded history to actual explain it all, but explain it I do. There’s always the track timings listed at the side of the songs if you want to skip it altogether though! Have fun, chaps. Toadcast #20 - The Late, Late News 1. Back at long last, would you believe. After the abortive attempt at a Christmas podcast and then the IT disaster in Toad Hall - when my retarded computer ground to a halt and had to have its entire operating system reinstalled - I have finally managed to record another podcast. Sorting out the IT department was not at all as easy as it should have been, so it’s taken ages to get to the point where I could record a podcast again. So, excuses over and done with, what am I going to inflict on you this time? The bloody Scots, that’s who. The Scottish music scene is an amazingly fertile one, so I thought I’d review 2007 and have a bit of a look forward to 2008. So I’ve pulled together some of the big guys like Malcolm Middleton, Emma Pollock and King Creosote and interspersed a few of the lesser known acts from around here to give you a nicely rounded look at what’s going on musically in the land of Buckfast and deep-fried Mars bars.
