Plus, we drop a tantalizing teaser about an upcoming episode with Nicole Johnson, a former monster truck driver and YouTube sensation - keep following the show for updates. Our guest today, James, is one of those people we admire as he turned a hobby into a full time career that he loves and is able to bring joy to others as a result of his passion. But first, James takes us down memory lane with stories of his first few cars including a two-tone blue 1977 Caprice Classic gifted from his grandfather, a vehicle full of character and quirks. You'll hear about its uncanny resemblance to an undercover police car which benefitted James more than once, the persistent stalling issues, and the adventure of installing a Pioneer stereo system. Passing the 1977 Caprice to his brother enabled James to purchase his next car, a "new to him" gold with vinyl top 1985 Oldsmobile Toronado Caliente, considered quite the luxury car in its day. His next car was near and dear to his heart, a "John Deere green" 1976 Triumph Spitfire, enabling him to be part of a car club and relying more on his mechanical skills - likely an early catalyst for his current line of work.Today, James splits his daily driving between a white 1999 Porsche 911 cabriolet and a 2017 white Honda CRV to ferry him to/from his auto restoration shop where he shares his passion as he delves deep into some of the intricacies of classic car restoration. His shop, McCrea Enterprises LLC in Easton, Maryland,  where he performs extensive work involved in a complete restoration of a vintage gems like a 1953 MGTD he is restoring for a repeat customer to give to his wife as a surprise. We discuss the challenges and triumphs of this labor of love, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional automotive skills. From engaging with online communities to sourcing rare parts, we offer insights and tips for fellow enthusiasts. Tune in to celebrate the emotional and therapeutic joy of keeping iconic cars on the road and discover how connecting with like-minded communities can fuel your automotive passions.James had so many stories that we ran out of time, so please send us feedback if you'd like to hear more from James on a future episode. And if you're ever on Maryland's Eastern Shore, please check out his wife's restaurant and catering business, The Ivy Cafe in Easton, MD - https://theivycafeeaston.com

¡y a disfrutar!

The Spitfire is a beautiful automobile, a thing of wonder penned by an Italian genius, but it almost never happened. If not for a chance find in the dusty corner of a factory it would have remained merely a “could have been”. But Triumph produced a car that still inspires new creations today and has a strong and loyal fan base around the world, nearly 60 years since it burst on the scene.

Joe has been in the Automotive Industry since 2007 when he joined a tire and mechanical repair chain store after spending multiple years in grocery store management.  He did not know anything about the industry and had no mechanical background but had a passion for helping people and sales.  After having spent some time there, he joined a dealership as a Service Advisor and quickly rose to the number 1 advisor based on sales at his dealership.  An opportunity as a Service Manager arose at a local repair facility and Joe decided it was time to get back into management as he was getting his legs under him in the automotive world.  After his second child was born, Joe sought an opportunity at his hometown dealership to run the Fixed Operations including Service, Body and helping oversee Parts.  In 2013, after realizing that there was a lot of “wrong” in this industry, generally speaking, he decided it was time for one last try with a shop he knew nothing about called Westside Auto Pros.  Joe was hired as the Service Manager and after a couple of years his title changed to General Manager.  In 2018, Ron Haugen, the owner at the time, and Joe decided to accelerate their 5 year plan of purchase and by October 1st of that year, Joe was the brand new owner of the already successful Westside Auto Pros.  Westside Auto Pros continues to grow its repair shop as well as its towing and roadside assistance department. Patrick Ryan, Technician, Eagle Automotive, Columbine Hills, CO, 4 Locations Key Talking Points What is important to dealership technicians transitioning to independent- make it apparent the technician matters in your business. If they quit at the dealership it wouldn't be noticed. They were “just a number.” Minimal and sometimes decreasing benefits. Interviewing dealership tech- discuss your team culture and environment. Many techs bounce from dealership to dealership because they are still finding “their place.”Don't view working at multiple places as negative necessarily. Show them a path for all ages of your technicians. Don't have a “cookie-cutter” interview process for all your hires. Career change- wanting to grow and be challenged, feel appreciated. Millennials/Gen Z- raised with no gravity “everything is great.” Introduce gravity a little at a time. Be taught instead of blocked. Be guided. The owner needs to be vulnerable- voice it to your team Break down stereotypes of large dealerships Technicians will check your social media prior to applying and read customer and employee reviews- promote your shop is a great place to work   Connect with the show: http://aftermarketradionetwork.com (Aftermarket Radio Network) http://youtube.com/carmcapriotto (Subscribe on YouTube) https://remarkableresults.biz/episodes (Visit us on the Web) https://www.facebook.com/RemarkableResultsPodcast (Follow on Facebook) https://remarkableresults.biz/insider/ (Become an Insider) https://www.buymeacoffee.com/carm (Buy me a coffee) https://remarkableresults.biz/books/ (Important Books) Check out today's partners: This episode is brought to you by Shop-Ware Shop Management. He entered the professional auto industry in 2014 by acquiring a failing shop in downtown Chicago that he was a customer of and started a turnaround. Andy now has two locations. He bought his first car at age 19, a 1972 Triumph Spitfire, which was the start of his gas, oil, and automobile obsession. Look for Andy’s previous episodes  (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22bizub%22). Lucas Underwood is an Automotive diagnostic specialist, shop owner, and foreman. Key Talking Points: Complaints from shop owners about their customer It is Andy’s contention that we program our shops to get the customers we serve and attract ASOG Facebook Group was started to help owners   It took Andy some time to realize that he didn’t want every customer that travled in front of his shop to become customers Lucas’s shop coach says that some business owners are in love with their problems and not their solutions Some shops need a nudge in the right directions and it helps out the entire industry Many shop owners should be doing better and when they do it helps out the entire industry Andy and Lucas both have a coach There is no excuse to hold onto fundamental problems in your business  Lucas started to change his business with the low hanging fruitHe wasn’t charging appropriately. Not his labor rate but the time charged on the ticket. It hurt his business and people When you start to figure it out, you don’t want every customer His customers are interested in value and what he brings to the table Owner on the counter gives time away He was taught fundamentals and his coach wanted them to become muscle memory so he can react and fix new problems You need to learn the concept behind why you are fixing segments of your business Andy- When you get the numbers right he doesn’t worry that he can’t pay the tech X on the high slide, but pay the tech X on the low side. He wants his techs to earn a great living, pay their mortgage and put food on the table. He doesn’t worry about paying his people to little When the business is financially managed you can make the decisions on what to pay and what to charge You can motivate yourself to grow if you don’t see your numbers   Lucas’s coach says: “Perfection is a lie told by the devil to steal the dreams of men”Lucas was told to get out of the bays and start running the business because he was slowing the business down You need to manage yourself out of the business so you can be away from the business without you there What gets in the way of running a great business:Arrogance Pride Ego Ignorance. You don’t know what you don’t know There are people willing to teach you, but you have to be willing to listen  Why would you invest in your business and make only 5% net profit, when you can make that with a smart investment. Too many shop owners are happy with a minimal profit and when they get ready to sell that will hurt their valuation Read Mitch Scheider’s book Misfire. Find it on the Books page on the website. Get it (https://remarkableresults.biz/books/) Owners need to think about where they bring the most value to their businessMany believe it is under the hood. Then hire someone to run the business Many don’t believe they can be the visionary and a great marketer, but that is a critically important role Too much is being in hero mode. Trying to be perfect in all ways and just spinning

Mere? Your Learning Curve Never Sounded So Good THE PANEL: Brian Sump is not your typical shop owner. A former professional athlete, Sump had never turned a wrench in a shop before starting Denver-based Avalon Motorsports in 2007.  But in the years since, he has used his business acumen and detailed, process-based management philosophy to grow the German-specialty shop into what a number of industry consultants consider to be an industry leader. Listen to Andy’s previous episodes  (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22bizub%22) . Key Talking Points There is a misperception that the new car dealer knows the cars better than the independent. He works hard to break that perspective with his customers every day. We do our customers a disservice if we are not communicating our abilities with our customers. His position to his customer: Wouldn’t you want your car to be viewed by a shop/technician that see all kinds of problems across many different platforms? Andy believes that the breadth of knowledge and deeper wealth of experience makes the independent the smarter choice for vehicle repairs. We must spread this story. The reasons he knows he is the better choice. Their quality of work, customer service attitude, transparency, the training and experience that we bring to bear in servicing and repairing customer cars. We are vehicle experts. We are not here to sell cars, we are here to keep your car on the road for the best value. He believes his 3 years 100,000-mile warranty goes above and beyond the dealer program. Listen to BJ’s previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22BJ+Lee%22) . Key Talking Points: Vehicle Inspections. The 300 Rule Inspect 100% of the vehicles, 100% of the time and 100% presentation of the results. It is your obligation and ethical and moral responsibility to tell the customer what is wrong with their vehicles. Digital will be more thorough and efficient than paper. Helps create a strong trusted relationship by showing everything they need to know What it is what it does, what will happen when you don’t’ fix it. Must have accountability to the process. Shop foreman should check a few cars a week to be sure the inspections are being done completely Create a spiff for a number of pictures taken per week. Pictures of good things help build history and trust. Andy Bizub requires the minimum of 10 pictures per car, but the count can go up which is a trend for him. Be sure to bill customer for certain items that you may not remember to add to the RO. Items like fluid top off. And many small parts. Shop supplies are important to charge but check with your state. Forgotten parts like 3rd wiper blade and cabin air filter. But a good inspection process will not forget these items. Having fun at work is also an important part of the culture at work. Andy Bizub is a native of Chicago. His first career was 25 years as a commodity trader. He entered the professional auto industry in 2014 by acquiring a failing shop in downtown Chicago that he was a customer of, and starting a turnaround. At bought his first car at age 19, a 1972 Triumph Spitfire, which was the start of his gas, oil, and automobile obsession. He is married to Libby Bizub for 22 years and has three children, Billy (20), Claire (18), and Jack (14). Andy is planning his second location for 2018. Talking points: 60% of business is Porsche plus Audio, Mercedes, BMW. Andy was a customer of the shop before he purchased it. He saw that the shop was not progressing, and he was winding down from a previous career and wanted to start another. Spent 25 years trading commodities; agricultural futures. Spent 10 years as a broker and 15 years as a trader. It was a people business. Relationships, ethics, people and trust became the strongest culture of the commodities business which was a seamless transition for him into becoming a service professional. Be bought the business and had a rough first year. He worked hard to retain the trust of the customers and his people. Andy’s second location to open at the end of 2017. It will be a general Euro service center. He got invited to open a shop in a luxury used car center. He uses Uber and ride shares to get customers back home or to work. Best entrepreneurial hack: Communication with his people. Uses Slack, dual screen monitors. As many tools to efficiently do their job. He enjoys the German car space and the tech, art and efficiency of that platform. You must be progressive and forward thinking as an independent. You will survive. Focus on your customer relationship. It is all about the customer. Relationships rule. He enjoys his twenty group and he is learning from them. Build on the foundation of your business culture. Pushing the rock in the same direction. Andy is scaling his business to run without him. He will hire people smarter than he is. Almost all successful people say they had a strong mentor or coach to help them along the way. His coach was and continues to be important to him. People are your number one asset. Give them reasons to stay. There should never be a year that you make less money than the year before. Training is very important to Andy. He prefers in-person training. He sends one of his Porsche techs to CA to train with Tony Calas. Customer perk is to wash every car. Cleaner than when it came in the shop. He is a brand ambassador for the car companies by keeping people in their cars. Repair instead of buy new. Networking opportunities in our industry are a very important tactics for every owner. Shop Profile Number of locations: 1 Years in industry: 3 Years business ownership: 3 Number of technicians: 5 Number of lifts: 11 Number of bays: 5 Days open: Mon-Fri Annual estimated volume: $1.5M Percent Repair vs Maintenance vs Other: 45/40/15 Technician training hours per year: 24 Service adviser training hours per year: 32 Specialty: Service all German makes, they primarily work on Porsche from brand new to vintage Something unique: A good percentage of our workflow are jobs that dealerships and other shops can't take on, either due to vehicle (like a Maxon Rollerskate) or the extensive work required (like a barnfind 1970 Porsche 911 that hadn't run in a decade). Bob chats with the lovely Buzby about the Kew Green OB a fortnight ago. (Whatever happened to Buzby?) and announces the Thameside Radio Pen friends / lonely hearts club. Mazzy gets box number 1. Later we hear Bob’s “Desert Island Discs” where Alex interviews him and we discover a bit more about his holidays and that  beloved Triumph Spitfire. We also learn what started Bob (and his older brother) on being radio pirates. He talks about Thameside Radio’s  early days when the station transmitted from Hampstead Heath for an hour each Sunday.   Dave’s DIY spot tells us how to make a nuclear fall out shelter out of sticky tape, vacuum cleaner tubing, and old cornflake boxes. (Protect and Survive anyone?)   The music is so perfectly early 80s. Motels, Silicon Teens, Gary Numan, Siouxie and the Banshees, Stiff Little Fingers, The Police (as well as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and The Who) Listeners mentioned include: Graham Copeland of Cobham. Gary Williams. Mick Taylor. Alan Jameson. Basil of Harpenden. Jilly Newman. Mike Skinner.  Thanks to Basil (see comments) for additional information about this broadcast - he reports that "We got perfect reception in Harpenden, 25 miles (40Km) north west of London!"

Bob was meant to be on holiday touring southern Europe and North Africa but as his P reg orange Triumph Spitfire was stolen in Spain so he is back  after just 1 week. It wasn’t insured either. (The car was found by the Spanish police a few weeks later). Alex who was was standing in for Bob  is going to hosting the first Thameside Radio Circle Line Picnic at 2pm next Friday. It’s in a no smoking carriage (remember those). Listeners have to wear a hat, daffodil or something Thameside and bring sandwiches to swap and a bottle. Songs include Sue Wilkinson's “You’ve got to be a hustler if you want to get on” – one of my favourite records that no-one else remembers. You can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0HHQ7s2R3w.  Banana Split by Lio   is the listeners most popular new release (and another of my favourites)Dave makes up for playing long records the previous week by playing a lot of his old sketches – remember Dangerous Animals of the World?  The superquiz is impossible as ever. He also has the winner of the scream of the week competition where listeners had to send in a recording of themselves screaming.Thameside Radio Listeners include: Andrew Simpson who is at the Green Belt festival and invites Thameside listeners to join him for a cup of tea. Jeannie from Southall who is besotted by Frances King, Vivienne Smith from Wembley. Mark Haybittle. Ramsey Margolis. Tim Cutcliffe for brother Tony. Valerie and Robert Taylor. Varessa (Vanessa?) Newman from W2.  Latymer Upper School. Godolphin and Latymer. Dave Geer-Moring. Heather Jackson. John Gallagher. Catherine Brockelhurst. Carshalton Boys School. Gary Knight of West London Radio.
