250 Satisfying Relationships Are A Choice Sometimes what we want in life are things that may not be the best fit for us, be it a new leadership position and you're either too bossy or too shy to effectively get the job done, or maybe it's just a car that doesn't run as well as we hoped it would. Regardless it is important to be able to keep our companions close in these times due to the valuable insight our inner circle can give us. In this episode Sarah Elkins reflects on the importance of having people in your life who are willing to point out the mistakes you make with compassion, and why it is so necessary to be willing to change for the betterment of the relationships that are held dear. Highlights Being willing to change and being able to flow with change. Choice and Consequences will define how you want to grow. Find people who will call you out when you make a mistake. Quotes “If you want to be a leader people have to trust you, they have to know you'll help them without judging them for needing help.” “As a leader you have to create an environment where people will see the positive impact of being there.” About Sarah Elkins "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! David Soden, co-founder and CEO of Aptimyz, talks with Pete Townsend about early entrepreneurial influences, finding purpose in a move from pharmaceuticals to B2B SaaS, the end-all-be-all of delivering customer value...and doubling down during lockdown! For more episodes and our entire back catalogue of show notes go to MoneyNeverSleeps.ie. For insights delivered to your inbox beyond the spoken word, subscribe to our MoneyNeverSleeps newsletter right here on Substack. EPISODE OVERVIEW: Aptimyz is an Ireland-based SaaS startup delivering a complete and affordable EPOS (electronic point of sale) and back-office management solution providing stability for retail in challenging times. If David and Pete had recorded this right after they met pre-lockdown in February, this conversation would’ve been much different! Think about it this way – you build some hard-fought traction with your startup and climb right up to the edge of hitting the market in a big way. Then, the unthinkable happens to not only your target market, but the entire world around you, and the interactions between consumers and small businesses that you relied on as a critical lever to your business, basically drops through the floor. Well, that’s pretty much a masterclass in “Dealing with Adversity” that you can’t get in any business school on Earth. HIGHLIGHTS: Being the youngest of five boys in an entrepreneurial household with both parents and two brothers running their own businesses – “It never looked easy, but it was always exciting, and I think I had the bug from that point.” On one of the biggest takeaways from his days in pharmaceuticals: “It was amazing as a young guy to be involved in a product launch going from zero to $1.5bn in 18 months, with that kind of scale, and see the pre-launch activity through to launch activity through to hyper-growth.” On his purposeful move from pharmaceuticals to SaaS: “It was always important to have that north star and know what you’re working for and why you enjoy doing it.” On his mantra as a startup founder: “It’s not worrying about the money, it’s worrying about whether you’re truly relieving a pain point for the customer.” On his thoughts on startups: “For anyone interested in doing a startup, it’s isn’t easy, and if it is easy, there’s a good chance you’re fooling yourself that you’ve found something that’s really worth it.” On digitalizing retail: “It isn’t about having a till or a PoS and then going online, it’s about having a digital business with a physical connection to the customer in store, and the virtual connection with the customer online, but managing it all in one place.” On the pandemic: “When it hit in March, it was kind of a hold-your-breath moment, and then we realized we could give up, or double down. We doubled down and expanded the team.” On delivering value: “There are a lot better things that retailers can be doing with their money right now than spending it on old PoS hardware.” On lessons learned from pitching to investors: “Be sure of what you want going into it because you can’t cry about it afterwards if you end up with a bad deal.” On looking ahead: “It’s a huge challenge but we’ll be successful if we deliver customer value. It’s not about the shiny buttons, it’s about helping customers run their businesses more efficiently. “ To learn more about Aptimyz, get in touch at info@aptimyz.com. “You have to believe the world is waiting for what you’re bringing” -Jennifer Peters How do you fill the gap between who you are and what you what you do (personally and professionally)? How important is it that you feel fulfilled in what you do? It’s easy to day dream AND it’s hard to actually chase those dreams… AND believe that they can come true, even when others tell you otherwise. Resilience, commitment, belief, and teamwork are all key ingredients in the recipe for success as an entrepreneur- this cast is proof:). Tune in and take notes as I sit down with fellow entrepreneur and longtime friend, Jennifer Peters. Jennifer is the Founder of Just Be Kitchen in the heart of Denver, Colorado. She shares her personal and biz journey, highlighting her ability to be flexible, embrace opportunity to innovate and progress (even when unexpected), and her unwavering belief that “if you build it, they will come”, is her truth and the space where she feels fulfilled in her mission. If you haven’t heard of JBK- you will! They were recently featured on Diner, Drive ins, and Dives, and have had a host of local and national coverage. Jennifer Peters, Just Be Kitchen Founder With a mission to serve mindful mouthfuls from a conscious kitchen with kindness on a plate, Just BE Kitchen is more than just a place to grab some grub. Today it’s just Marcus and Rich on the podcast. They’re free styling the conversation and chatting about how they were both on vacation while the news was breaking that COVID-19 was spreading quickly and that the government declared it a pandemic. They also discuss the role that therapy has played in their decisions to stay calm during the current stock market crash and what could be the start of a recession. They reiterate the importance of making sound financial decisions and not jumping into buying stock or selling stock out of emotion. Remember, investing is something that should be part of your regular financial plan and a habit that you practice 365. Lastly, they give some tips on how to maximize your cash flow during this time, while still being strategic about paying off your debt. We as women, we sometimes feel like we're supposed to do and be everything just because we are capable. We believe the lie that if we hire out for something, we are not the wife or mother or the best that we could be because we didn't do it ourselves. Just because we're capable doesn't mean we have to do the thing that possibly really drains us or is not income producing. If you are feeling this way, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I felt like this probably for six years, and it took me a long time to grasp the idea that it was more beneficial and more income-producing for me to hire out to spend money for someone else to clean my home, for someone else to do my yard than for me to do it myself. Cary Krosinsky is the Co-founder of the Sustainable Finance Institute, Carbon Tracker and Real Impact Tracker, as well as a lecturer at Yale School of Management. He is the author of seven books including Sustainable Investing: Revolutions in Theory and Practice and his seventh book will look at Modern China, innovation, sustainable finance and cooperation. Cary is also an advisor to Brown University’s Sustainable Investment Fund, Deep Green Metals Inc, and principal at NPV Associates. Highlights: Being selective with experiments and ruthless with what is working and what is not Stock exchanges haven’t been providing much push for impact reporting Creating a culture of sustainable and impact investing It is essential we collaborate to solve problems together It feels like a positive to encourage foreign investment into China as foreign investors have a say over conditions for the capital deployment Ecological economics’s attempt to put prices on externalities shows that there is little use in measuring carbon footprint of a portfolio because its ultimately not very impactful What is really needed is dynamic changes in corporate strategy, investment strategies and policy and supportive policies From assessing strategies to creating a certification for financial institution at Real Impact Tracker Cary is focusing on advising companies to improve their dual sustainability finance track Some SDGs are not directly investable. We need to segment which SDGs are investable and non investable, and of the investable SDGs into the direct and indirectly investable Impact measure needs to be done at a systems level as well as a strategy level. “Finance without sustainability is a recipe for environmental and social disaster” “Sustainable investing without a business case is philanthropy” We need to run 100 or more different strategies in parallel at scale One trillion dollars of impact vs $500 trillion of tradeable assets Cary Krosinsky's personal path to impact and passion for raising awareness through education Time Stamp: [06:00] What is impact investing? “It’s not just about a return on investment… It’s really about a return on relationships” -Rei Wang (click to tweet) One of the benefits of being an on campus student is the infinite amount of resources available to you at your university. You have access to professors who have been through it all, are surrounded by students full of energy and eager to get things going, and now more and more companies funding innovations. Companies like Dorm Room Fund and Verizon Ventures have been reaching out to campuses to find the newest up and coming talent. They are funding students, and letting them take the reigns on projects that would normally be just a dream. The support doesn’t end when students get their degrees. In fact, it’s the contrary. The students who join these programs become life-long members of a support group that will continue to help and nurture their ideas and companies. It’s a very exciting time to be a university student. Download this episode today to hear more about on campus integration from the leaders of top companies like Dorm Room Fun, Verdigris, and of course - Verizon Ventures. Our guests include: Lemu Coker, who is the partnerships lead on the open invitation team at Verizon. He works with campuses to bring in talent, product, and insights into verizon. Mark Chung, the CEO of Verdigris Technologies. Verdigris Technologies makes the world’s most intelligent energy monitoring systems for high end commercial building. Rei Wang, the Director of Dorm Room Fund, which is dedicated to funding student entrepreneurs. “You don’t give them (students) the guard rails, you let them create the guard rails and create the structure...” -Lemu Coker (click to tweet) Highlights Being a student on campus means you have access to infinite resources. Stanford’s program is supportive well beyond graduation. Every year Dorm Room Fund does a giant summit where alumni and founders stay connected. Value is created through on campus integration by providing support. Giving students the resources to create their own systems is a stronger tactic than forcing them into events and situations. Your first five hires need to be complicated and skill specific. On Campus Integration gives students access to real world problems a lot of university students never get the chance to deal with. There can be a lot companies are missing by going to the administration and not directly to the students. “What I’ve seen be very effective in providing a nurturing environment is creating frameworks for experiential learning” - Mark Chung (click to tweet) Resources VerizonOpenInnovation.com Verdigris.co DRF.VC Full Show Notes at: VerizonVentures.com/Episode
