Zaria Forman is known for her pastel drawings documenting the environment and climate change. The thing is, her work is so much bigger than that statement would lead you to believe. Her works are not your average pastel drawings. First off, they are massive. They are of a size that forces you to stop and take notice. Die in Malaysia geborene Künstlerin Wei Tan begann ihre Karriere zunächst mit einem Masterstudium in Musikkomposition, das sie an der New York University absolvierte. Im Sommer 2015, während der Entwicklung ihrer Arbeit an bildbasierter experimenteller Klangkunst, begann Wei Tan, die Welt der abstrakten Malerei zu erkunden. Sie ist nicht politisch, aber natürlich gibt es eine Botschaft. Meine Werke suchen nach Schönheit, wo es keine zu geben scheint. Ich glaube, das ist ein wichtiger kultureller Beitrag. Wenn man etwas so Alltägliches wie Aluminium, Zellophan, Plastik, Luftballons oder Schrott bewundern kann, hat man die Grenze dessen, was wir als schönes Motiv in der Malerei verstehen, ein Stück weiter verschoben. Mit meiner Kunst möchte ich den Betrachter überraschen und ihn dazu bringen, seine Vorstellung von realistischer Malerei und von der zeitgenössischen Kunst im Allgemeinen zu überdenken. Wenn wir doch alle Künstlerin und Künstler sind, warum herrscht dann noch immer eine so große Barriere zwischen der Branche selbst und dem Großteil der Gesellschaft? Vielleicht weil es noch mehr Menschen wie Jette braucht, die sich mit einer solchen Frische und Unbeschwertheit der Kunst widmet und damit neue Begeisterte schafft. Jette Lübbehüsen, ein Rolemodel für viele, ist eine junge Frau, die früh ihre Kreativität auslebt und die Social Media Welt auf ihrem Weg mitnimmt. Sympathisch, echt und mit künstlerischer Neugier kämpft sie indirekt für eine neue Kunstwelt: Für mehr Offenheit und weniger elitäres. After serving as a federal agent for the United States military, Talor broke from the traditional career path to pursue photography. We have spent a lot of time over the past few weeks talking about humanity, and in many ways it's a conversation about our relationship to the natural world around us. Climate change and the ways we traverse and use our Earth has been the most important issue our lifetimes, a real-time global event that we see in melting ice caps, rising seas, massive fires, droughts and extreme weather hitting every region of our world. For that reason alone, talking to an artist like NY-based Zaria Forman, whose life work is to "convey the urgency of climate change" and "recreate the wonder of the natural world" is vital. She has been on personal and scientific journeys to Greenland, Antarctica, the Arctic and the Maldives to observe and create artwork, and has worked closely with the likes of National Geographic and NASA as an artist-in-residence to help create a visual language for climate change. When COVID-19 took hold of the world, we wanted to talk to Forman about her lifelong relationship with painting natural landscapes. "Drawing" painstakingly with pastels over massive paper works, she focuses on the beauty as opposed to destruction, developing a relationship with the viewer that is about love and care of our resources. By appealing to our emotions through painting beautiful landscapes , Forman believes we can enact action of what is at stake for all of us. And that is why we wanted to talk to Forman, on an April afternoon in the midst of shelter-in-place, as her own city of NY was so heavily impacted by the coronavirus. Her perspective and access to the far reaches of Earth are both wise and her temperament is positive. We talked about her career as an artist, how her mother's dedication as a nature photographer continues to drive Forman today and how her interactions with scientists and experts in the field has come to shape her understanding of climate change. Her works are stunning reminders of what we could lose in this fight, and yet she finds so much to be proud of from the even slight changes humanity as made in recent years. Zaria Forman makes pastel drawings of glaciers and icebergs and the changing landscapes of places like Antarctica, Greenland, and the Maldives. She does this to bring attention to climate change and to honor her mother who started it all. Zaria shares how taking risks and having the courage to grow has been an essential part of her journey. We get into the nitty-gritty of how she works: from curating thousands of photographs, getting just the right shades of blue for her pastel drawings, and even a bit on how she runs her studio. Zaria’s work has been featured in National Geographic, she recently gave a TED talk and she was invited by Sven Lindblad as an artist aboard Lindblad expeditions. We talk about how all that came about. Anyway, as you’ll hear, we geek out a little bit, and I loved every second of it. There is a moment in this interview when Zaria tells me about what she is doing with some noises she recorded in Antarctica. My geeky little heart skipped a beat when she told me who is helping her and who stopped by her studio. I kind of had fan girl moment. You’re going to have to listen to find out who that is.

Zaria's enthusiasm for drawing began during her childhood when she and her family traveled to some of the world's most remote landscapes, the subject of her mother's fine art photography. A cum laude graduate in Studio Arts from Skidmore College, Zaria has exhibited extensively at galleries and venues throughout the United States and overseas. Zaria recently completed a series of drawings that will be the set design for the classic ballet "Giselle", premiering this October at the Grand Theatre of Geneva, Switzerland. In August 2012 she will lead Chasing the Light, an art expedition in Greenland, re-tracing the 1869 journey of American painter William Bradford and artistically documenting the rapidly changing landscape (www.kickstarter.com/projects/701351414/chasing-the-light).
