1961's "Call for the Dead" was a striking premiere in spy fiction. Not only was it the careful, opening gambit in John le Carré's long and dominating career, it also marked the first appearance of George Smiley, the author's recurring intelligence officer of unlikely composition. Accented by a polite, unassuming conduct, Smiley is slightly overweight and a bit lovesick, too, all of which stood him in sharp contrast to the "known quantity" literary spy of the day. Drawing on his own experiences of work with Britain's intelligence services, John le Carré sculpts his inaugural text out of post-war mortar and emerging cold-war realism.

Recorded off the west coast in a van by the ocean, this podcast is the reflections of Sophie and Dalton on life and the recent death of their friend Mikayle. About a year ago the three of them recorded episode #40 of Own It SLC called "Where is the God Damn Soy Sauce." There is a distinct difference between that episode recorded in January, and this one. Real time experience coupled with psychedelic chocolates has shown these two a lot, and their partnership throughout is cool to hear. Accented by a camp stove, doors slamming and miscellaneous burps, you get to hear what it's like to be on the road. With an in intro by Sarah and Phil, this podcast feels like sitting by the ocean and listening to the ebb and flow of life.

Illy - Papercuts SongIlly - Papercuts LyricsWelcome to accented the podcast. This series exposes English learners to real conversations between native and second language English speakers. It's important that you understand a variety of accents. In each episode, we interview a guest who has a distinct English accent. Enjoy the series, and I know that your English will improve just by listening to Accented. Thanks for joining me for another episode of accented. Now, when I released the series on the 15th of February this year, I did mention that I would be releasing episodes on the 15th and 30th of each month. Now I have a dilemma because it is the 29th of February. There is actually no 30th in this month. So today I have a short episode with no guest, but next episode will be released on the 15th of March, and I will have a new guest. So today I just wanted to say thank you to everybody that has downloaded the Accented series. Feel free to leave me a comment asking questions. I'm happy to help you with your English learning journey.I also want to know what accents you want to hear. I have quite a few interviews coming up. We have the Canadian accent, Mexican, Lebanese/Australian, so please just send me a message and tell me what accents you want to hear. Now I'm absolutely blown away by how many countries have downloaded the series in the last 14 days. There are over 90 countries. That is incredible. I am so pleased that the series is getting out to as many people as possible. So the top country listening to accented is India. I'm getting so many downloads from there, followed by Australia, then the United States, the United Kingdom, and then Pakistan is in fifth place. Wow. I'm just speechless. So in today's episode, what I want to briefly talk about is idioms. Now you're all aware that I'm an English teacher from Sydney, Australia, and of course I'm very proud to be Australian and unfortunately in the last couple of months, there have been a lot of fires that have destroyed certain towns in Australia, and it's quite devastating. So I was really lucky, to attend the firefight Australia concert held two weeks ago. There were a lot of Australian bands, artists performing on the day, and all the money raised at the concert goes towards helping the people and the animals affected by the fires. And unfortunately, a lot of Australian animals like koalas and kangaroos have died during these fires and the ones that are alive need medical intervention. So we made quite a bit of money to help everyone. As I was watching the artists perform, there was this one Australian rapper called Illy who was performing a song called paper cuts, and as I was listening to paper cuts, I thought, wow. There are a lot of idioms and English phrases in this song that English learners could benefit from understanding. In the show notes, you will find a link to the song and it's a great way to learn English is to listen to English music. And I want to go through the lyrics with you so that you understand what the meaning of these idioms are. So before you continue, pause the episode, click on the link to Illy song paper cuts, have a listen, bring up the lyrics, and then come back and press play.Illy - Papercuts SongIlly - Papercuts LyricsSo welcome back. I guess you've listened to the song. Now I want to go through the lyrics with you. Okay, so first line en guard. Now en guard is a French expression, but we commonly use it in English. When you say en guard, that means that you're ready to fight. So get ready for a war. When we say in English, it's meant to be - that means that it's out of our control. So whatever has happened, it's meant to be. Then
How many English accents are there in the world? Let me guess. you're thinking American, British, Australian, possibly South African. And what about grammar and vocabulary? Does it change each country you go to? Let me break down the numbers for you. There are 195 countries in the world, and 45 of those countries have at least half the population who can competently speak English. I bet you that is more than what you were originally thinking. Let me introduce myself: my name is Kimberly Law and I've created this podcast for people to continue learning English by being exposed to multiple accents in real life conversations. In each episode, I will interview an English speaker. And you will hear their story. The podcast title will list the country the guest is coming from so you can get an understanding of their accent. The reason I created this podcast is because I don't believe that there is enough real world conversations for ESL learners. Of course you have your ESL books where you can study grammar and then there might be an audio component with a conversation - they say, but it's not a real conversation. And I wanted English learners to actually hear real conversations and become familiar with them.In this podcast, I will be interviewing English native speakers and second language speakers from all over the world who will explain their story. Now let's get back to those numbers I was talking about at the beginning. When you look at the world, 7.5 billion people, 527 million people are native English speakers. Now that isn't a lot of people when you compare it to native Chinese speakers, which equal 1.3 7 billion. So why is English the world's language? It is because 1.5 billion people are learning English. That is 20% of the world's population. Now when learning English, I've had students tell me they want to learn British English or they want to learn American English and only listen to accents from these countries. Now the UK has 65 million people with multiple accents. Take England, for example. If you live in Manchester, your accent is different to someone in London or Birmingham. Plus there are other countries in the UK like Scotland. Wales and Northern Ireland. Not one accent is the same. You'll probably find that it is more likely that you could be communicating with a second language speaker just like yourself.1.5 billion learners compared to 527 million native speakers plus the different accents across native speakers and learners. What is important for you is to understand a variety of English accents and the context of the conversation. I hope you enjoy the series and good luck with your English learning journey.I hope you enjoy the accented series and please don't hesitate to email me with any questions or visit my website, Kim's law of english.com our Facebook page, Instagram, or Twitter, new episodes of accented will be released on the 15th and the 30th of each month. Make sure you listen to the podcast episodes already available.See you next time.www.kimslawofenglish.com

Hello Snobs, how are you? Are you sad? Maybe not all of your dreams have come true. Don’t worry, Samwise is here. Rudy (1993) is a heartwarming story about The University of Notre Dame, a school so holy that it’s basically God. Aside from Notre Dame, Rudy is about football, middle class America, and having a lot of heart. Rudy (Shawn Ass-Tin) has so much heart. He has all the heart in fact. #heart. Join Rudy as he faces every adversity in life and yet never gives up on his one goal: being the biggest Notre Dame fanboy in the world. Along the way, dear Snob, you will meet people like Fortune, a mystical groundskeeper who is wise and kind. You will also meet baby-face Favreau, a dweeb who becomes a pimp in the course of a few scenes. Finally there is Papa Ned Beatty, the famous father of fourteen children. Ned is kind of mean to his son with a lot of heart, but that’s okay, it just makes Rudy have more heart. Accented by a soothing soundtrack, Rudy is a feel good movie and perhaps the best Notre Dame commercial ever. Strap in Snobs, put your jersey on, and get those grades up. If you had one tenth the heart of Rudy, you’d listen to this podcast!

A Spoonful of Russian - Learn Russian Online from Russian Tutor
Russian accented vowels sound much richer and fuller than their English equivalents. That is because Russian is spoken much more vigorously than is English - there is greater muscular tension throughout the organs used in speech production.

Milling About visits Acorn Hill Lodge in Lynchburg, Virginia. Driving up the path you're greeted by a family of Shih Tzus, followed by their jovial smiling owners Wanda and Robert Crocker. A great couple, their relationship began in 1992 with a chance meeting at Valley View Mall in Roanoke. Nineteen years ago they bought what was to become Acorn Hill Lodge, a 1910 home sitting on five acres. Intending it as a medical massage therapy center, the lure of a B&B was hard to resist. Plus hospitality runs in Robert's family as his grandmother had a boarding house in Brooklyn. A former hospital worker specializing in massage therapy and a talent for construction, he rebuilt the lodge and spa from the ground up. Accented with acorns everywhere, there are 11 suites with a European flair as Wanda was a former nuclear energist who spent time abroad. Wanda and Robert urge New Yorkers to visit as it's a short train ride away. During hurricane Sandy 16 dogs and 35 people did just that!

Recent political debates around language have often been controversial, sometimes poorly informed, and usually unedifying. It’s striking to consider that such debates have, at least in the USA, been current for more than 100 years; and perhaps surprising to learn that they can be seen to have a striking effect on the development of modernist literature. In Accented America: The Cultural Politics of Multilingual Modernism (Oxford University Press, 2011), Joshua Miller begins by evoking a time when the existence and substance of a distinctly American national language is first being argued, and when Presidents, language mavens and the new breed of linguistics scholars are exchanging opinions in major public fora. Against this background, he reads the work of some of the major American writers of the interwar years as exploring and negotiating the relation between language and cultural identity. In this interview, we talk first about Mencken’s rehabilitation as a public figure through his work on language, and his role in the political debates on the status of American English. We then discuss how the cosmopolitan language backgrounds of Gertrude Stein and John dos Passos variously informed their work, how the relationship between language and African American identity plays out in the works of Jean Toomer and Nella Larsen, and how Spanish and indigenous languages shape the writing of Carlos Bulosan and Americo Paredes.
