Mike and Nick reminisce about Sharp Edge and early 2010s drinking which leads us to Caliente. We talk about Pittsburgh being a craft beer destination now, as opposed to still finding its way. We ask Mike why he named his page Pittsburgh Beer Douche. We interrupt Mike a lot in this segment. Cool Whip is good. After Mike finally finished his story of how the instagram account became a thing, we ask what his top 3 beer styles are. We talk pale ales and then move into the emoji question. Mike gives his response and we judge him mercilessly. Nick swoons over Bridge City Brinery again. We wrap this week with everyone's emoji's and missed connections and of course a shout out to Monday's brewing in Peters Township. As water treatment professionals, we must continue to expand on our knowledge of the industry. Learning from others in the industry is a great way to do that! One key aspect of the water treatment industry is understanding polymers. Many of us regularly use these products but have no idea how they are created and where they come from.   On the podcast today, we are joined again by Mike Standish, co-founder of Radical Polymers. Mike has over 28 years of experience in polymer additive design and development. Before forming Radical Polymers, Mike served in technical and business leadership roles within global, publicly-traded chemical companies. He is responsible for developing and patenting industry-leading polymers for use in the water treatment, oilfield, and detergent industries.    Mike will be talking all about tagged polymers and what’s new in this space over the last few years in today’s episode. After Mike’s presentation at the most recent AWT conference, I knew we needed to talk further and get this information to the entire industry. As James McDonald has said about Mike from him joining me on episode 14, “Mike is one of those presenters that you’d listen to even if he was reading from a phone book. He’s well-spoken and always highly informative in very relatable terms. Episode Summary: You’re no dummy. Sales, marketing, systems and processes are pivotal to a growing and thriving business, but outside of those things, Mike wants to give you the ‘ONE thing’ that changed the game for him in business.  Learn an easier path to implementing this ‘one thing’ in your business and how to identify if you are already doing this ‘one thing’ that changed everything in a matter of days for him and his companies. Find out on episode 2 of the Business Grit podcast. Show Notes: Think back to when you first started your company:  the passion and excitement you had to wake up and get to work in the morning. You were consumed with your company to make a better life for yourself and those around you, so you have to have this ‘one thing’ for your company to survive through every season!  If you don’t have a business that reflects you, you’ve built a house with no foundation. Your business needs to reflect who you are!  Mike tells the story of how he sensed a mass exodus about to happen in his company - money was tight and he had to shut the company down over the holiday season, and when they returned, he had a heart-to-heart with every employee and told them that the company was going to run as a reflection of him and if they didn’t like it, they could go find another job and shouldn't bother coming back to work on Monday.  As a result, Mike had the tall task of re-building his company when nearly 90% of his employees left. One of which told him he was leaving because if one more employee left him, he would be out of business. Mike’s response? “You obviously don’t know me”.  Fast forward six months. Mike’s company doubled in payroll efficiency, grew revenue by 60% and more than 10x’d their profit.  Mike was able to do this with a smaller, less experienced team that was loyal and made no excuses because they were ready to buy-in to the culture and vision.  After Mike tells this powerful story he asks you some key questions about your company and if it reflects you or not. He says you can’t change people's moral compass, you have to find people that are going to truly buy-in to your vision and function as a reflection of you. Otherwise, they will run your company into the ground. Mike closes this episode with a challenge.  The challenge is this: Pick the one thing you refuse to tolerate in your company any longer and share this one thing on the Business Grit Podcast Instagram or Facebook page so he can support your efforts. Subscribe, rate, and review the podcast so Mike can get this in front of as many entrepreneurs as possible! Head over to episode 3 where Mike shares the 7 team traits of a revenue doubling team. Cloudian specializes in “object storage” for enterprises, a form of unstructured data storage that eliminates the scaling limitations of traditional file storage, enabling enterprises to quickly grow deployments without hitting a cap. According to Gartner, 80% of enterprise data will be stored in some form of object storage by 2021. Cloudian’s platform provides infinite scalability and allows users to access data from anywhere in the world, offering “hybrid cloud” deployments that combine cloud and on-prem computing. Besides enabling the ability to easily access and manipulate large objects often consisting of video, images and other unstructured data, Cloudian’s storage solution results in lower costs, more consistently managed security and compliance with data governance policies. Mike Tso, CEO and co-founder of Cloudian joins me on my daily tech podcast. After Mike’s former company (Gemini Mobile Technologies) lost 66% of its workforce after the 2008 recession, he created Cloudian with a unique culture based on three key attributes for employees to model – hungry, humble and honest. In 2018, Cloudian announced $94 million in Series E funding, and recently the company was named one of the best cloud computing companies and CEOs to work for in 2019 based on Glassdoor. I wanted to find out more about the story behind Cloudian. We also discuss the changing data landscape. How the rise of AI, machine learning and IoT is causing data to pile up to the point where it’s no longer manageable and how Cloudian is changing the way enterprises manage their data. I learn how other storage vendors are seeing a declining market share, but Cloudian is experiencing rapid growth backed by prestigious investors including Goldman Sachs, Intel, and Fidelity. Cloudian has more than 300 customers, making it the most widely adopted independent provider of object storage solutions.

Childhood or all time classics? Anthems, ballads, or pop hits? God, this was fun. ***This is a Non-Spoiler Episode*** A BIG (but the "i" in "big" was crushed by a bouncing lamp) Announcement - 1:43 What is This Episode? - 7:31 The Mikes’ Top 5 Disney Animation Studios Movies: The Eras of Disney Animation + Stats - 8:22 Honorable Mentions - 19:05 Five - 21:01 Four - 23:25 Three - 25:58 Two - 27:58 One - 31:05 The Mikes Top 5 Disney Animation Movie Songs: Running Through the All-Timers - 33:53 Stats - 43:19 Honorable Mentions - 43:53 Five - 45:11 Four - 47:10 Three - 48:29 Two - 49:06 One - 49:43 Social Media/Your Homework/Words of Wisdom - 52:41 So this was supposed to be like a quickisode, which is our term for short 15-20 minute episodes. Then there were some MAJOR MMO developments. First, we decided upon a new series rewatch, and this episode became the obvious / perfect time to introduce you to what will become a new weekly show for us until the end of June (hint hint). We also turned back into children, foul mouthed manchildren to be sure, but the Disney Animated Studios took us back to better and simpler times. After Mike 1 ascribes “eras” to the 5 distinct phases of the history of Disney animated films, and after we discuss some highlights, we dive into our top 5’s plus a few honorable mentions. Then of course, we cannot resist listing all of the notable Disney animation studio songs - that we could remember (or watch on youtube) before we count down our top 5’s there as well. How could we resist? Again, don’t miss our huge announcement at the top of the show. It’s gonna be a big part of our spring programming every week. (Are you adequately teased yet?) But also enjoy our many anecdotes and self diagnosed psychoanalysis on our own childhoods, and better yet, as we heckle one another. This was definitely one of the most fun episodes we’ve EVER recorded. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. If you liked this episode, you’d probably also dig our Best Original Song halfisodes where we’ve reviewed many of these songs in their Oscar categories. There’s a playlist on our Soundcloud account, where you can find episodes on The Lion King, Aladdin, Cinderella, Frozen, & more! We’ve also been all over the recent Disney Animated Oscar Nominee in Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet and several of the recent Pixar films as well reviews of Mary Poppins & the Returns. As always, please tell us your favorites, whether you want to count down your own Top 5 or just give us your number 1’s. We’re @MMandOscar on Twitter, and we are on Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, and Gmail. You can subscribe / rate / review / like / share / & listen to us on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Google Play, Tune In, Spotify, and just about wherever you listen to podcasts. After Mike does a terrible impersonation of an angsty teenager, Ryan and Mike acknowledge that the theme of this book hits close to home for the both of them. They give us a heads up that the format of the show will be a little different, and they won't be doing a lighter 2nd half; there's too much to discuss about this spot on portrayal of intrusive thinking and OCD ( Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ). They talk about the way Aza's obsessive thoughts are interrupting her daily life, and how she and those around her react to that. We get some further insight into Mike's battle with Depression and Bipolar Disorder, and the central reasons he attends Therapy on a continuing basis. We also find out that a whopping 94% of the US population report intrusive thoughts, and Ryan, even as a Therapist, is no exception. Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis. Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts. Welcome to the Good Life Property Management podcast! I’m your host, Steve Welty. This is a show for property management entrepreneurs who want to build not only great business, but also great lives. I’m here to help you gain the freedom to live life on your own terms while creating a positive impact in the world. Also, please check out Steve Welty's Music! Mike Schraepfer is a super savvy broker, owner, and investor from Minnesota. We connected by chance on Facebook, and I was intrigued by his ideas on investing in real estate with a team. I’m happy to say that he’s willing to share that information with everyone in today’s episode, so don’t miss this one! As he explains today, Mike started out “backwards” by being an investor first when he was 18. He then got into renovation and construction, and backed into property management from there. He started on the MLS, he explains, and started off with college rentals since he was a student and that was the market he understood. Now, he personally owns over 125 homes, and the entire portfolio averages over a 10% cap rate. When Mike wanted to keep the best talent at his company, his first thought was that he wanted to help his staff invest in properties too. This would both help them financially and encourage them to keep working with Mike. He created an investment class for them, as well as a system to take away some of the financial barriers to investing in property. In our conversation, Mike explains this 9-unit class and how it works. He’ll talk about how he works on finding a property to buy as part of the class, as well as what happens next once he’s found the property. His goal, he explains, is to take his students through all the motions so they overcome the barrier and realize that buying a property is simpler than they might think. He’ll touch on all these steps throughout our conversation, so this is a great place to start if you’re interested in implementing something like this at your company! In This Episode: [00:14] - Welcome to the show! Today, Mike Schraepfer is here to share some of his thoughts on investing in real estate with a team. [01:48] - We hear about who Mike is personally and professionally, and how he became a property manager. [03:30] - During the economic downturn, how was the market impacted in Duluth as opposed to other places? [04:47] - Mike talks about whether his portfolio is single-family homes, duplexes, or triplexes. [05:57] - We hear about how Mike came up with the idea of helping his team to invest in real estate, and what it looked like early on. [08:03] - When Mike set up his class, did everyone jump on board, or were only some people interested? [09:14] - We hear more about the class itself. [10:39] - What does property-hunting look like for Mike, specifically when it comes to finding properties for his classes? [12:31] - After Mike finds a property for one of his classes, what happens next? [14:03] - Mike shares some information on his buying criteria, and talks about ways in which he avoids gambling. [17:15] - We hear about how Mike holds title to the properties from the classes, and whether he has any partners. [19:01] - How many properties did Mike need to have before a bank let him close as an LLC? [22:28] - Steve points out that particularly hungry team members can go and find deals but may not qualify for a bank loan, which can lead to creating opportunities for each other. [23:53] - Are there any pitfalls or lessons that Mike learned along the way? [24:45] - Is there anything else culture-wise that Mike has done to become successful in his business? [25:50] - Mike explains another initiative that he created to be a strong neighbor within the community. [27:55] - What benefits has Mike seen, and how did they come up for him? [29:57] - Mike talks about the flexible unlimited vacation time that his company offers. After Mike and Carol play out a very goofy version of the Gift of the Magi, they decide to bring all the kids home for Christmas. The kids decide to come, but bring plenty of grown-up baggage with them. Marcia's husband Wally lost his job, Peter can't deal with his girlfriend being his boss, Bobby is secretly training to be a race car driver, Cindy is tired of being thought of as a kid, and Greg misses his wife. Also, Jan and her husband Philip are breaking up. Can the Brady warmth and the Christmas Spirit solve their holiday woes? Erik and Justin praise Gary Cole's spot-performance as Mike Brady in the Brady feature films. They also decide Mike Brady would have a heart-to-heart with Peter about colonoscopies. Erik declares it wouldn't be prudent to discuss George H.W. Bush. Justin recalls the rough-and-tumbles days of the late '80s. He also realizes just how weird "The Gift of the Magi" really is. Marcia's husband Wally gets called out, as does Greg's mustache. Jan and Philip's marriage problems turn out to be too realistic for a Brady special and Erik ties fake-Cindy back to Charles in Charge.

We have a great show today.  We are meeting with multi-unit franchisees and husband and wife team Mike and Shannon Kemp. Mike and Shannon speak about what it takes to be multi-unit franchisees, how/when they knew they were ready to expand beyond one brand/unit and their entrepreneurial advice on growing and investing in a franchise system for more than 20 years. Here's quick background on them:   In 1994, Mike was working part-time as an employee for Play It Again Sports the store buys and sells quality, gently-used sports equipment and gear (the franchise currently has more than 300 franchised stores in the U.S. and Canada). After Mike was brought on as regional general manager for the owner and helped him open six additional Play It Again Sports across North Carolina, he decided to go into business for himself. In 2003, Mike opened his own Play It Again Sports in Winston-Salem, and later went on to open up a second location in Greensboro. That's when Shannon Kemp's wheels started turning. She saw her husband's success and saw the other sister brand stores, Plato's Closet and Once Upon A Child, expanding in the community as well. Plato's Closet is the same frugal recycling concept as Play It Again Sports but centers around clothing, shoes and accessories and is catered toward teens while Once Upon A Child caters to the kid demographic. Shannon wanted to bring something for women in the community and decided to bring the missing sister brand Style Encore to Winston-Salem in 2014. Most recently, she will be celebrating the grand opening of a second Style Encore in Greensboro. In part 2, we meet with a legend in franchising, Lawrence Doc Cohen.  Doc Cohen discusses why he choose franchising as opposed to starting his own concept.

I tell stories so to be blatantly honest if you want to know the answer to the question then hit play. Here you will get metal attitude, high energy humor, and unbridled honesty. My life is about making awesome stories and sometimes they are shared through NSFW language. Follow Me: RockGodofPodcasting.com FB/rockgodofpodcasting @rockgodofpod

Disney is a place that is always changing.  Posters get replaced, ride cars get re-designed, costumes get updated.  But the old stuff has to go someplace, right?  We get to learn where and how these relics of Disney's past get into the hands of regular people like us, for today, we talk all about ... Disney Auctions at the Van Eaton Gallery But first ... Bev thinks Disney has too much money because she has seen people throw paper money into the water. We get this show moving pretty quickly and shift our normal business to the end of the show, because we want to get to Mike Van Eaton, who runs Van Eaton galleries.  Mike puts on what is considered the best Disney auction, and he has items in his collection that will blow you away. Chatting with Mike about some of these pieces was really fun, because you can hear his passion for the parks and the history these pieces represent.  We also get into what we should be looking for in today's Disney collectible market and what will increase in value. After Mike, we head back to the beginning of the show and do some feedback.  Jason responds to a previous listener Cliff who commented on our last show about how Jason and Taren bashed Walt Disney World (which wasn't the case but whatever). Taren's Thinks for this show is pretty good if you are in to diet gum.  Oddly enough, Terrence agrees with her. Bev jumps in to her window presentation on Roger Broggie, who was in charge of the train system in Disneyland, among other things.  Then we fire off a gassy Fact of the Show, and that's it! See you in the parks!
