The Whiskey Trip - Season 3, Episode 16 - Matt Greif, Head Distiller - Distillery of Modern Art

This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief rolls into the beating heart of the South—Atlanta, Georgia—where whiskey meets modern art in a way you've never seen before. He sits down with Matt Greif, the visionary Head Distiller at Distillery of Modern Art, a place where creativity flows as freely as the spirits. It's not just a distillery—it's an immersive experience. Picture this: a contemporary art gallery that champions local talent, wrapped in the aroma of oak barrels and filled with the hum of conversation and clinking glasses. Here, art and whiskey dance together in perfect harmony. Matt starts things off by pouring Big Chief a dram of their 100% corn whiskey—and what a first impression. On the nose, it's a bouquet of baking spices, honey cake, and dried flowers. A sip reveals a delicious tapestry of fruit compote, peanut brittle, and the warm savoriness of roasted corn. It's bold. It's elegant. It's a conversation in a glass. Then comes something truly rare—a corn whiskey finished in amburana barrels. Big Chief leans back, eyes wide. “Oh my,” he says, stunned by the complexity. It's the first finished corn whiskey he's ever tasted, and hands-down the best. With whispers of spice and soft sweetness, it's a breakfast whiskey worthy of sunrise sips and Sunday mornings. But the journey doesn't stop there. Matt brings out their bourbon, crafted from a mash bill of 67% white corn, 21% Abruzzi rye, and 12% malted barley. The flavor? A lush profile of dried and stewed orchard fruits, kissed with honey and a soft floral finish. It's the kind of pour you reach for before a perfectly seared steak—a whiskey that sets the tone. To close the show, they dive into the rye whiskey, a masterpiece made with 70% Abruzzi rye, 15% white corn, and 15% malted barley. Notes of crisp apple open the door, followed by baked cinnamon apple pie and the smooth richness of vanilla ice cream. It finishes with spearmint and spiced tea—a finale worthy of a standing ovation. Each pour, each bottle, each sip—uniquely Atlanta. This isn't just whiskey. It's Georgia's spirit, bottled with pride. This episode isn't just about tasting whiskey. It's about tasting culture, community, and craft. It's a love letter to a city that's rewriting the story of Southern spirits. This is The Whiskey Trip. Cheers, y'all.

Ha allestito i suoi recital/concert e i suoi monologhi, dedicati a Eleonora Duse e Maria Callas, in Italia, Russia, Giappone, Francia, Bielorussia, Germania, Polonia, Turchia, Stati Uniti e Cuba. L'Unità - 7 luglio 1954Sito: www.storiedimontagna.comContatti: andataeritorno.podcast@gmail.com Newsletter: https://andataeritornopodcast.substack.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andataeritornostoriedimontagna/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andata-e-ritorno-storie-di-montagna/?viewAsMember=trueFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557903953187&name=xhp_nt__fb__action__open_userThreads: https://www.threads.net/@andataeritornostoriedimontagnaMusic by Epidemic SoundCrediti immagine: https://www.mountlive.com/mario-puchoz-e-la-conquista-italiana-del-k2/

Welcome to Episode 1575 on Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he will be interviewing Giuseppe Mazzarosa More about today's guest: Cantina Mazzarosa is a historic winery located in the heart of Abruzzo, boasting a rich legacy that began in 1863. It stands as a testament to over 150 years of passionate winemaking, intertwined with the very birth of the Kingdom of Italy, through the visionary leadership of Senator Giuseppe Devincenzi. Senator Devincenzi, not just a political stalwart, but an inventive genius, transformed his property into a pioneering vineyard, introducing innovative techniques now revered in winemaking. The winery is nestled in the esteemed Colline Teramane DOCG region, specifically in Roseto degli Abruzzi, where the vines benefit from a unique terroir enriched by the Vomano River and the Adriatic Sea's proximal breezes. Today, the Mazzarosa Devincenzi estate stands as a living narrative, encapsulating a family's dedication to crafting wines that are a fusion of tradition, innovation, and the unique terroir of the Teramo Hills. As stewards of this enduring legacy, the Mazzarosa family continues to produce wines that resonate with history, passion, and the land's unique character.

Cheers,Scott and JakeBourbon Lens       About Alex Laufer: Before Alex Laufer became the Co-Founder and CEO of District Made Spirits, he worked in biotechnology for seventeen years. Alex's background in science and love of cooking with local ingredients combined to form the genesis of his passion for distilling. His fixation with good food & drink led him to explore the flavors of every region he's called home, San Francisco, New York, and now the Mid-Atlantic. Alex lives in Silver Spring, MD, with his wife, two sons, and their golden retriever Modi. About District Made Spirits: More than the nation's capital, Washington DC, is the spirit of a region where cultural diversity and sustainability meet forward thinkers, artists, urban warriors, and creators. Distilling with determination, District Made embodies the spirit of this legendary city, crafting adventurous rye-forward spirits true to the values and terroir of the Mid-Atlantic. Founders Sandy Wood and Alex Laufer left their established careers to open a distillery, believing in the heirloom grains of the region, the neighborhood of Ivy City, and each other. They discovered that the risk had paid off after tasting the toasty honeyed spice box flavors in those first batches of spirits made from Abruzzi and malted rye. Today, they bring together agriculture partners, cooperages, small business owners, and community members to showcase the very best of the region. Every bottle of whiskey, vodka, or gin we make features our signature flavor and unparalleled taste known as the Heart of Rye. Smooth enough for sipping and strong enough to hold up the most ambitious cocktails, each proud pour represents the legacy of the land in a meeting place where finding what you're made of all comes with the territory.  District Made Spirits are distributed by Breakthru Beverage in Washington, DC, Maryland, Delaware, and Momentum in Illinois. They can be purchased online at www.districtmadespirits.com/shop. Delicious spirits from locally-sourced heirloom grains are handcrafted in Washington, DC by the distillery District Made Spirits, formerly known as One Eight Distilling since 2015. With an updated look and new website, the portfolio includes the Core Spirits Series (vodka, gin, barrel-rested gin, bourbon, and rye) and the experimental small-batch District Made Untitled Series.  ABOUT THE CORE SPIRITS SERIES – Rye-forward, locally-sourced grains for the signature spice box flavor profile District Made STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY  (94 Proof; 57% Abruzzi Rye, 14% Corn, 29% Malted Rye) District Made Straight Rye Whiskey puts a spin on classic Maryland-style rye while honoring its agricultural history in the region. Our mash bill highlights a large portion of heirloom malted rye, bringing darker honeyed notes of toast to the flavor in our signature style. Sweet hints of rock candy, cherry cola, and spicy cinnamon balance a nuanced spirit. District Made STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY  (95 Proof; 58% Hickory King Corn, 16% Abruzzi Rye, 8% Hard Red Winter Wheat, 12% Malted Rye, 6% Malted Barley) District Made Straight Bourbon Whiskey, aged at least four years, showcases Hickory King Corn, grown in the hollows of Virginia since the 1880s. To create our signature style, we distill this heirloom grain in two different mashbills, one wheated and one high-rye, age them individually, then marry a few barrels together. The result is a drier, richly textured four-grain spirit proudly poured. ANNUAL RELEASE 2023 BOTTLED IN BOND (BOURBON) The first consumer law created was the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897 to guarantee the authenticity of a whiskey with a series of requirements that included only whiskey made from one distillery in one distillation season, aged at least four years in bonded warehouses, and bottled at 100 proof. District Made Bottled in Bond Bourbon honors this designation and the region.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

The medieval warm period began in the mid-tenth century, around and about  950 AD. A warmer climate led to higher agricultural yields, and in an agricultural society that meant surplus profits. These were invested in building monasteries and cathedrals; they attracted the attention of larcenous Scandinavians, who became known as the Vikings. Benefiting from warmer temperatures, they traveled widely, built colonies from Greenland to Ireland to central Russia. Nor were they alone. Medieval people settled in sparsely populated internal regions, like Yorkshire, and Abruzzi. And one of the many consequences of this wealth and growing cosmopolitan sphere was a wealthier and vigorous reforming Roman papacy. Europe was not alone in experiencing social, economic, and cultural changes caused by the Medieval warm period. While the climatic changes were different everywhere, my  guest Timothy Pauketat argues that in Meso America the medieval warm period also brought about a period of cultural interchange, stretching from the Mayan kingdoms north across Mexico, into what is now the American southwest, and as far east and north as  the central valley of the Mississippi River.  Timothy Pauketat is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and as Illinois State Archaeologist is the Director of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey. He is the pre- eminent archaeologist of the Mississippian civilization that centered on the area around modern St. Louis, and his latest book Gods of Thunder: How Climate Change, Travel, and Spirituality connects the Mississippians to their neighbors near and far. It gives the reader a unique portrait of a world now almost completely lost to us–but still visible, in places, if you know where to look.   For Further Investigation  One of the unique things about Tim Pauketat's book is that each chapter concludes with a list of places to visit that have been mentioned in the chapter, or are related to something in the chapter. Here are a few of them; the descriptions are his own, from Gods of Thunder Teotihuacan, Mexico: "No archaeological site in the Americas, possibly the entire world, is greater in ruins than the Classic-period city of Teotihuacan, north of Mexico City." The website CultureTrip provides the "Ultimate Guide to Discovery Mexico's Teotihaucán." Tamtoc (Tantoc), Mexico: "Fly to the site virtually using Google Earth (Ruinas deTamtoc) before you arrive in the city of Tamuín by car or air.Tamtoc park sits on the inner bend of the Tampaon River, and only the central core of the site is publicly owned. Other portions lie in fields and pastures outside the park boundaries, including the eastern half of the site's largest mound." Horseshoe Lake State Park, Illinois: "To begin your tour of the archaeological site of Cahokia, start with some environmental context... Entering the park, you will immediately see a great oxbow lake in front of you.The other side of this lake is actually an island, with the oxbow and the park continuing to the industrial landscape on the horizon. Even today, Horseshoe Lake and its teeming animal and plant life give you a good idea of the richness and variety of the landscape a thousand years ago." Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, Illinois: "After touring the Interpretive Center, exit the building on the west side and walk into the site's Grand Plaza. Ignore the mowed green grass, which would not have covered the grounds centuries ago. It takes ten to fifteen minutes to traverse the plaza to the front steps of Monks Mound, which you climb to reach the 100-foot-high summit. From the top, you can see Horseshoe Lake to the north, St. Louis to the west, and the bluff horizon to the east and south."

Learn more about your ad choices. Meghan Markle's marriage to England's Prince Harry was an education for Americans about how a foreign commoner—though a popular television actress—is embraced into an old European monarchy.  But before Meghan became a Duchess and even before Wallis Simpson tempted a king from the throne, there was the affair between Katherine “Kitty” Elkins, daughter of West Virginia's Senator Stephen Benton Elkins, and the Duke of Abruzzi, heir to the throne of Italy. The world's newspapers were agog as the two carried out a long, tempestuous affair that asked the question, “Will they marry?” and answered the question, “How do royal families react when one of their own dates a commoner, even one who is a daughter and granddaughter of U.S. Senators?”

Dirty Water: The BeachGrit Podcast featuring Chas Smith and Derek Rielly

Dirty Water, episode forty nine, and today's guest is described by BeachGrit writer Steve Rees, as the “most famous surf shop owner in the world” and “Part animal―Part machine―Part idiot.”While other surf shop owners obsequiously lick the boots of the clothing majors, for this is where the cash is, he sticks to his Buell wetsuits and custom boards. If you don't know where his little surf shop is in Newport, Rhode Island, well, good luck finding it. He don't have a website. He is seventy years old, still rides a six-one and he is a skilled persuader for he knows how to worm his way into a tired heart. Today's guest, Mr Sid Abruzzi. Frances reads five letters, written in July, Aug and Sept of 1909, by  Vera, Avice, Edmund, Enid and Bernard.Vera writes the fascinating sentence - for two days I have been alone in my glory. She also describes the Girls Friendly Society Festival - tea and games in the garden of one of the big houses in Sydenham. But it pours with rain, so 70 people have tea in the cellars.  Dr Cox and four of the siblings are on holiday at the Red Lion in Thursley, Surrey; the pub is on the London to Portsmouth Road. There are motor cars and dust, and Dr Cox is writing his next book – Rambles in Surrey. Edmund has been to the Church Lads' Brigade camp; at Weston-Super-Mare, and writes all about it. Enid, Cyril and Bernard have been to France and Switzerland,  staying in Chamonix, Finhaut, Arolla and Chandolin. They see the Mer de Glace, the  glacier up on Mont Blanc, which in 1909 was staggeringly larger than it is today. Bernard, still sunburnt from Switzerland, tells a story about a noisy chicken and Mr Morgan, the innkeeper of the Red Lion. Bernard also talks about the North Pole having been found, but did Dr Cook or Mr Peary discover it first? And Louis Bleriot is the first person to fly the English Channel, the Duke of Abruzzi has climbed higher than anyone else in the Himalayas, Cody has flown further than anyone else in a heavier-than-air flying machine, Neville is home in England again and Cyril has been promoted to Divisional Inspector. Everything was happening in England in the summer of 1909 Machell Cox Budget Letters is on twitter @CoxLetters, or do email me if you have found this podcast interesting - machellcoxletters@gmail.comAll content is subject to copyright and belongs to Frances Thompson and the Bodleian Library.Intro: 0:00Vera's letter, July 28th 1909: 3:00Notes on Vera's letter: 9:20Avice's letter, August 9th: 12:51Notes on Avice's letter: 20:36Edmund's letter, August 23rd: 27:58Notes on Edmund's letter: 34:30Enid's letter, August 25th: 39:42Notes on Enid's letter: 46:52Bernard's letter, Sept. 3rd: 51:10Notes on Ber's letter: 57:12

We're a little out of our comfort zone, reading Natalia Ginzburg's essay "Winter in the Abruzzi," in which she recalls, bittersweetly, her family's exile in the Abruzzo during the Fascist regime. Abruzzo is a region we've never seen (but high on our list of places to visit); it has served as a literary setting in other works (think Hemingway among American authors). You can read a translation of the essay here.

Hi listeners! Welcome back to another episode of the Warships Podcast. In this weeks episode we have a lighter episode focusing on some of the new and upcoming ships that the team is testing. These ships are the VMF Kronshtadt, USS Buffalo, KMS Z-39, RM Duca Degli Abruzzi, and HIJMS Asashio. Comparing and contrasting these ships to analogous counterparts in game as well as discussing the gameplay so far with them. Sailing on to the Z-39, the crew talks destroyers where the major change was the drop from Tier 8 to 7. Finishing out the ship discussion with the premiums Abruzzi and Asahio. Each cast member gives their thoughts and opinions as these two ships appear to reaching or close to their final release state. Please remember, all these ships are subject to change. This week SupportTank and DaniExpert from the Italian Cup tournament sit down to tell us about how the Italian-only team tournament works. Kami and Kelorn are curious about their method of map selection and wonder what it might mean to be able to choose the map and team composition accordingly. Kelorn gives this week's quick hits, including the upcoming perma-space camos, an update to pan-asian and commonwealth flags, and an update to the test version of Abruzzi. Getting into the details, Kelorn, Kami, and Dani talk about the recently released details regarding the down-tiered USN Heavy cruisers. They speculate about the effects of the concealment nerf to the lower tier ships and wonder how Pensacola will do at Tier 6. After having a couple of weeks playing them, the crew discusses what captain builds and upgrades are being used on the French Battleships, particularly at high tier. The podcast gets rounded off with a teaser for next week's giveaway, as well as a discussion about downtiering Z-39 from Tier 8 to Tier 7. Hi Listeners! We are back for another episode of the Warships Podcast and we have plenty of topics to cover. The Let's Battle Tour event at USS Lexington was a success and Wargaming's Sub Octavian came to visit. Where he revealed some new information on the future of USN carriers and cruisers. Getting right into show topics, the crew sets off with the topics of the LBT. Discussing USN CV changes and carrier module choice in general or now, lack there of. The news about the USN cruiser split was also discussed as the news from LBT had much to talk about. Sailing right along, the cast gets into a plethora of new premium ships that are being tested. The first of which is the Huang He, a Chinese light cruiser that the cast has been testing for awhile but now has the addition of a smoke option. The podcast gives their thoughts and moves onto the new tier 6 German (Dutch designed) Destroyer, KMS T-61. After this, the next premium, the tier 7 HIJMS Ashitaka is discussed and the use of the old stock hull ships leads to a debate on their use. Rounding out our new premiums the crew brings up the tier 7 RM Duca delgi Abruzzi. The discussion of this ship brings a debate on cruiser life and the future of Italian ship lines and what that national flavor might be. Moving full steam ahead, the show finishes out with our Quick Hits, bringing up points on; Offical Wargaming Stream starting Friday, World of Warships now available on Steam, USS Indianapolis is for sale again, Patch 6.14 is being tested, and the new changes that brings. The show finishes with the topic of further testing to KMS Graf Zeppelin, and the cast brings up CV expert Farazelleth who did an amazing write up, analysis, and opinion piece on reddit. While on the topic of carriers, recent changes to destroyer AA has led to a further power creep in Anti Air capability leaving CV players with harder choices to make when attacking, and the crew again discusses the impact that this has on the game.
