IAN GILLAN DEEP PURPLE LEGEND THE LOST INTERVIEWS EPISODE 3 Ian Gillan is the legendary charismatic frontman for one of the greatest bands in rock and roll history. Deep Purple is essentially known for its hard rock pulse. Its musical schemes have encompassed progressive rock, blues, R&B and even jazz. Keyboardist Jon Lord received a telegram from Tony Edwards stating that he'd back Lord in putting a band together; later Edwards called Ritchie Blackmore to meet with him. In December of 1967, the two musicians met up and collaborated for the first time. John Lord had already asked Nick Simper to play bass, a former bandmate with ‘The Flower Pot Men.' While living in Hamburg, Germany, Ritchie Blackmore saw drummer Ian Paice performing onstage with his band The Maze. The group was fronted by singer Rod Evans. Evans auditioned for the lead vocalist role for a scheming new (Deep Purple) band and won the spot. Blackmore remembered Paice from Hamburg and asked Evans to bring him along. Blackmore and Lord were a bit worried that Evans mannerism was much like Tom Jones or Engelbert Humperdinck. Jon Lord later stated, “We'd eventually beat him into shape.” In 1968, Deep Purple was officially formed. The band was named after a Nino Tempo and April Stevens song of 1963, believed to be Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother's favorite song. Deep Purple's musical styles intentionally mimicked the American rock group Vanilla Fudge (“You Keep Me Hangin' On”). The group quickly scored commercially with their Top 40 hit single “Hush” (#4 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) and became overnight sensations in the U.S. Ritchie Blackmore's vision for the band was to implement heavier rock techniques, and while Rod Evans and Nick Simper were in the group it may never have been accomplished. After Rod Evans was dismissed from Deep Purple, he went on to form Captain Beyond in 1971. Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover were performing at Woodford Green in London with their British pop rock band ‘Episode Six.' Their lead singer Ian Gillan was noticed by Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord. After watching Gillan's performance, they offered him the lead singer position for Deep Purple. Eventually Roger Glover would be asked to join the band, while securing one of the greatest music lineups in rock history. Also in 1972, under resistance by the band, they recorded a double live album in Japan entitled, Made In Japan. The album was essentially the Machine Head tour. The band recorded (3) concerts ... (2) in Osaka and (1) in Tokyo. Most of the material came from the second night in Osaka. Made In Japan also went platinum and the live version of “Smoke on the Water” became instrumental to the song's success. Smoke on the Water” (#4 Hit on Billboard's Hot 100) was officially released as a single in 1973 and became one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock and roll history. Deep Purple were now international superstars in the studio and on the road. At the peak of their success, Ian Gillan gave a six month notice and stated that he was leaving the band after fulfilling all of his commitments in 1973. The album Who Do We Think We Are was released in January of 1973. The release generated the hit single “Woman from Tokyo.” “Smoke on the Water” was also busy that year becoming Deep Purple's biggest hit of all-time. Who Do We Think We Are was the last studio album to feature Ian Gillan as their lead singer until the 1984 reunion LP Perfect Strangers. Deep Purple did six American tours before Ian Gillan and Roger Glover left the band. The grueling touring schedule and fatigue became the reason for their early departure from the band. In 1973, the band had eleven different entries in Billboard and became the top-selling artists in the U.S. But without its lead singer and bass player the band felt like it was the end. Deep Purple brought in several lineups through the years. Lead singers that included David Coverdale and Joe Lynn Turner, guitarists Tommy Bolin and Joe Satriani and bassist Glenn Hughes. There have also been band reunions that have included the original Deep Purple core lineup. Sadly, founding member, keyboardist and songwriter Jon Lord died in 2012. Ritchie Blackmore and his wife Candice Night currently perform together with their medieval folk rock band Blackmore's Night. Ian Gillan is the son of a school teacher mother and a factory worker father. Gillan came from a musical family; his grandfather was a bass-baritone and sang opera, and his uncle was a jazz pianist. Ian was a boy soprano in the church choir when he was young. Besides being the legendary voice of Deep Purple, Gillan also sang the role of Jesus on the original recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar. He also recorded with his solo bands the Ian Gillan Band (1975-1978) and Gillan (1978-1982). Gillan was also the lead singer of Black Sabbath (1982-1984). Ian Gillan performed in the charity group Rock Aid Armenia and later (2011) participated in the supergroup ‘WhoCares,' a continuing effort by Gillan to help the people of Armenia after a devastating earthquake. The group was comprised of Gillan, Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Jason Newsted (Metallica), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) and Mikko “Linde” Lindstrӧm (HIM). They recorded the songs … “Out of My Mind” and “Holy Water” which is included in a 2-CD compilation of rarities from the music careers of Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi. Proceeds from the CD helped rebuild a music school in Gyumri, the second largest city in Armenia. Gillan and Iommi received the Armenian Presidential Medal of Honor for their humanitarian efforts. In this episode we welcome Sounds legends Sandy Robertson and Edwin (Savage Pencil) Pouncey into our Hammersmith lair and ask them about their careers and shared fascination with the occult. After describing their routes into writing and their days at Sounds, Sandy and Edwin reflect on the dark history of occult rock from Black Widow to Norway's Black Metal scene, via Jimmy Page, Kenneth Anger and Aleister "the Beast" Crowley. Clips from the late Andy Gill's 1990 audio interview with Liberty/United Artists executive Andrew Lauder give us an opportunity to honour the Hartlepool-born facilitator of musical freakiness and discuss the many acts he signed and/or A&R'd over the course of 50 years, from Hawkwind and the Groundhogs to the Stranglers and the Stone Roses. After saying our goodbyes to reggae sound-system operator Jah Shaka and small-trio jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Mark and Jasper run through their highlights among recent additions to the RBP library, including pieces about Nancy Sinatra (1967), the Eagles (1972) and Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly (1993)... and a 2011 tribute to hip hop star Dwight "Heavy D" Myers. Many thanks to special guests Edwin Pouncey and Sandy Robertson. Find their books, including Edwin's Savage Pencil Scratchbook and Sandy's Aleister Crowley Scrapbook, in all good bookshops. Please note that we recorded this episode before learning of Mark Stewart's death. Pieces discussed: Mister Aleister Crowley, The Primer: Occult rock, David Bowie: White Lines, Black Magic, Andrew Lauder audio, Sound Systems & Jah Shaka, Ahmad Jamal, April Stevens, The Eagles, Shaun Cassidy, Nancy Sinatra, Kim Deal & Tanya Donnelly and Why Heavy D Matters.
It's time for a very special LIVE 100th Should've Been Gay celebration! This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are joined by two returning guests and friends of the pod, Bethany Brown (@bethanybrown) and Devon Hales (@devonhales.jpg) to talk about why Netflix's The School for Good and Evil and new series Wednesday Should've Been Gay. You know Bethany from Charmed and Nancy Drew and Devon from her iconic role as April Stevens in Teenage Bounty Hunters. First we head to the village of Gayveldon with Bethany to chat about how overwhelmingly gay The School for Good and Evil is. From the intense chemistry of Lady Lesso and Dovey to the hardcore simping Agatha does over Sophie from the second they appear on screen, it is honestly wild to see how aggressively heterosexual the movie pretends to be. Aggie gets dropped into the School for Good, a place overflowing with frilly dresses, mean girls, and dudebros. Meanwhile, Sophie is dropped into the School for Evil, an extremely queer-coded school led by the gayest, hottest headmistress we have ever seen ie. Lady Lesso played by Charlize Theron. She thinks she is in the wrong school too, until she gets a cool haircut from Lesso's axe in the doom room and decides to embrace her inner queer power starting with proudly obtaining and displaying her magic finger glow for all to see. Although they attempt to put the girls into a love triangle and give them male love interests, their efforts fall flat as Aggie spends the entire movie being a dyke in shining armor focused on protecting Sophie at all costs. In the end when all hope looks lost, only one thing can save Sophie from herself and unite the schools, true love's kiss. We don't know about you, but we've never heard of a platonic version of true love's kiss. Agatha kisses Sophie on the lips and it brings her back to life and fixes the world, because that's how powerful lesbian love is. Afterward, Aggie could choose to stay with her obligatory boyfriend but instead she chooses to return to Gayveldon with Sophie, her true love. Next up we head to Nevermore Academy with Devon to talk about how gay Wednesday is and scream about Wenclair. All we have to say is, ‘and they were roommates'! Wednesday Addams has always read as queer-coded, just as the rest of her family does. However, this series really takes it to the next level by rooming her with sparkle rainbow bisexual Enid Sinclair. This girl owns at least 6 lesbian sweaters, has bisexual Harley Quinn hair, and is the only person that Wednesday actively shows affection toward (in her own way). She also has a whole ‘conversion camp' storyline, because she is a late bloomer and has yet to fully ‘wolf out'. Wednesday and Enid are literally the golden retriever and black cat girlfriends we have always wanted and are fiercely protective of one another. They start off not really understanding each other, but grow to discover that opposites really do attract. Of course the series throws male love interests at both of them, but they have so much more chemistry with one another that the boys fade into the background. In the end, the only thing that finally causes Enid to go full werewolf is her love for Wednesday as she risks her life to save her from the Hyde. We are still recovering from watching them melt into a passionate hug after not touching at all for a full season. We know one thing for sure, The School For Good and Evil and Wednesday Should've Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. In this episode, we're making the case for why Spencer Hastings is indisputably queer. We talk Spencer's queerest lewks, her undeniable chemistry with various female characters, where she falls on the Paris Geller to April Stevens continuum, which queer Spencer pairings we most wish would have been made canon, how her family might react if she came out, and the way that Alex Drake functions as Spencer's version of Vamp Willow. Episode 008: Eight Shattered Ornaments01 The Rolling Stones - Cosmic Christmas (UK 1967) This unlisted track ends the first side of The Stones' sole psychedelic effort.02 Claudine Longet - I Don't Intend to Spend Christmas Without You (France 1967) Thanks to our friends at RPM International for contributing this fantastic Christmas love song by France's soft-voiced starlet. This single only offering is a sparkly pop wonder with pristine production typical of the time. 03 The Rotary Connection - Christmas Child (US 1968) Minnie Riperton and company offer this groovy holiday original written by producer Charles Stepney, taken from their 1968 Christmas album Peace. A combination of soulful takes on classics and originals make it a perfect soundtrack to the season.04 Twice As Much & Vashti Bunyan - Coldest Night of the Year (UK 1968) This British duo of Dave Skinner and Andrew Rose recorded two albums for Immediate records of which this classic wintry tune graces their second. Originally by Nino Tempo and April Stevens, the duo teamed up with folk chanteuse Vashti Bunyan during per pop singer days to produce their version of this perfect pop nugget. 05 The Chamber Brothers - Merry Christmas, Happy New Year (US 1969) Along with Sly Stone, the Brothers Chamber were one of the first bands to send psychedelic soul to the pop charts. This single only offering is indebted to the aforementioned legend, combining his trademark fuzz guitar groove with rotating lead vocals into a psych-funk holiday workout.06 Paul Revere & The Raiders - Rain, Sleet, Snow (US 1967 - Mono Mix) A fuzz-laden holiday banger from one of America's greatest garage pop successes, this ode to the pangs of working for the US Postal Service during the holiday season is taken from their 1967 Christmas LP.07 The Majority - All Our Christmases (UK 1968) Beginning life as Majority One, these British lads laid down many a fine single as well as a stellar LP during their brief two year career. This waltzy number shows a strong Hollies harmony pop influence.08 Wild Silk - Toymaker (UK 1969) Mysteriously released as Basil in the US, this UK obscurity is a classic example of toytown psychedelia. Thought not explicitly about Christmas, there is only one night of the year in which this toymaker must frantically work to meet his deadline. The band released four singles of fine UK pop over their two year existence.09 Saturday's Children - Christmas Sounds (US 1966) A sweet holiday pop number by this Chicago area band who recorded three singles for the Dunwich label from 1966 to 1967 before calling it quits.10 Bee Gees - First of May (UK 1969) The Australian brothers' 1969 concept album Odessa shows a band in flux from their Beatle-esque pop-psych era into more orchestrated pop territory before finding their true calling with soul and funk-rock in the 70's. This beautiful number tells the heartbreaking tale of lost love using Christmas trees as a metaphor. 11 Robin Gibb - Lord Bless All (UK 1970) During the brief time that this brother Gibb left The Bee Gees due to lead vocal disputes, he recorded a solo LP that proved years ahead of its time. Though not the most consistent set, it showed some of the earliest drum machine experiments in rock. This gorgeous track washed in reverb showcases what Robin would have continued to experiment with had he not returned back to his original band later in the year,12 Simon & Garfunkel - 7 ‘O Clock News/Silent Night (US 1966 - Mono Mix) We end things with this somber take on a holiday classic by the masters of folk-rock. This striking rendition closes their classic Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme album.

There are very few acts in pop music who have covered such a wide spectrum of styles as this duo. From April's early, highly influential hits with Henri René, and Nino's appearance with Benny Goodman onstage at 7 years old (!), to his recent appearance at Carnegie Hall--there have been masterful forays into rock and roll, jazz, latin sounds, rhythm and blues, sweet harmonies, lush, expansive ballads...
There are very few acts in pop music who have covered such a wide spectrum of styles as this duo. From April's early, highly influential hits with Henri René, and Nino's appearance with Benny Goodman onstage at 7 years old (!), to his recent appearance at Carnegie Hall--there have been masterful forays into rock and roll, jazz, latin sounds, rhythm and blues, sweet harmonies, lush, expansive ballads...In fact, it seems they set out to leave no stone unturned as they explored different sonic solutions to the age old problem of 'putting their message across' in song. Carol and Anthony LoTempio were born in Niagara Falls, NY. They took the Grammy® for Best Rock & Roll Song in 1963. And, on October 26, 1999, they were inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in Buffalo, NY: a fitting tribute to two of pop music's most versatile and durable adventurers. They seem to have been born to create music. Explore, and discover some of the many roads their musical wanderlust has taken them. Today, Nino has a hit, a remastered CD album. Listen here to Amazon River his new release with April Stevens.

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of "Come To The Sunshine," a Special HOT 100 list was compiled from some of the 3,018 unique songs by 837 artists that the show has played since 2006. How many songs each artist accrued with multiple plays and how many total times they appeared on the program defined their final chart position. In the first hour of the broadcast, host Andrew Sandoval counts down artist and songs 100 through 80. These include Van Dyke Parks, the Zombies, Harmony Grass, the Ballroom, Linzer & Randell, Don Grady, Sasha caro, Traffic, Sandy Salisbury, Raintree Minority, Mark Eric, Sagittarius, the Action, Graham Gouldman, the Picadilly Line, Denny Laine, Twice As Much, Nino Tempo & April Stevens, Les Irresistibles (Arch Of Triumph), the Montage and Fairchilds. The full show is available in five parts. This episode is part one of five.
In the final show of series 8, "Come To The Sunshine" #70, Andrew Sandoval spins a selection of rare vinyl singles by Tristen Schell, The Sundowners, Pasty Fuller, The Forum, Los Angeles, World Of Oz., Group Therapy, The Silver Eagle, Ray Chafin, Cyril Hargrove, The San Francisco Earthquakes, Warm Sounds, International Submarine Band, The Poor, Tim Andrews, Johnny Walsh, Sandy Salisbury, The Lollipop Fantasy, Fire And Brimstone and The Young Idea. Hour two brings you an album spotlight on Nino Tempo & April Stevens 1967 "All Strung Out" LP in MONO (a mix unavailable on CD). If you've never heard this wonderful album, which mixes Spectorian Wall Of Sound production with great songs by David Gates, Dalton & Montgomery, Jerry Riopelle and the unmistakable voices of Nino & April, then you are in for a treat. Much like the lyrically bizarre "All Strung Out" (which employs heroin references as analogy for falling love - quite intense for 1966 - if you don't believe me check out this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ogtsaXmxK0), Andrew spins Nino's classic "Pet Sounds" level masterpiece, "Boys Town (Where My Broken Hearted Buddies Go)" kind of a less oblique "See My Friends." Also, their 1972 MGM release, "Makin' Love To Rainbow Colors," is a poppy, LSD novelty born too late. Not forgetting their visionary bagpipe-folk-rock take on "I Love How You Love Me." On this mix, I'm a bartender throwing all genres from Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop, Rock, House, Dub step & Afro beat, into a shaker, adding a special serving of my passion and love, & you get a "Genre Cocktail". I took a more aggressive approach in this mix, allowing the different energies to mingle freely with one another like people in NYC, times square. I purposely never let genres clique together for too long, I wanted to train the listener to accept difference, and expect the unexpected. Since March is Women's History Month we continue the tradition of starting off with a female artist...One of the earliest of empowered female artists is Jackie DeShannon who kicks off tonights show. Tony Jackson & the Vibrations start off the 1st set with a killer version of Benny Spellman's "Fortune Teller" followed by producer extraordinaire Mickey Most's "That's alright" with a little help from Jimmy Page. Since the Oscars were on this week Samuel Jackson & John Travolta via Pulp Fiction pave the way for Charlie Feathers' "That certain female" which Quentin Tarantino used in Kill Bill 1. L.A. pop meisters The Grassroots keep the 60's vibe solid with "House of Stone".....Heading over to Copenhagen not for a Global Warming Summit but for some great neo-psych via Baby Woodrose before Debbie Harry & Inara George keep the 'female faith' strong and alive, fist pumping for P.G.Six & the Turtles...Not to forget the 50's, Roy Brown sings about his "Gal From Kokomo" and April Stevens requests that you follow her "Under the Ice" Nazz style and we finish up the show with some hip-ster Jazz via Ken Nordine & Roy Glenn......F-Troup indeed!!
