This week, writers John Berendt and Taylor Mac discuss the Goodman Theatre's world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Berendt is the author of the original book the musical is based on, and Mac wrote the book for the adaptation. Learn more about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical, here. This conversation originally took place July 8, 2024 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: The Musical Southern charm is bountiful in Savannah, Georgia. But behind polite smiles, the eccentric residents are filled with secrets and motives. When wealthy antiques dealer Jim Williams is accused of murder, the sensational trial uncovers hidden truths and exposes the fine line between good and evil—which sparks Lady Chablis and other Savannahians to change the city forever. The world-premiere stage musical adaptation of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil—John Berendt's 1994 blockbuster non-fiction book, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist that was on the New York Times Best-Seller list for 216 weeks—is realized at Goodman Theatre by creators MacArthur “Genius” Grantee Taylor Mac (book), Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics) with choreography by Tanya Birl-Torres. Tony Award winner Rob Ashford directs a cast led by Tony- and Grammy-Award winning actor J. Harrison Ghee as The Lady Chablis; Tony Award nominee Tom Hewitt as Jim Williams; and Olivier Award nominee Sierra Boggess as Emma Dawes. JOHN BERENDT was born and raised in Syracuse, New York. He attended Harvard, where he majored in English and wrote for the Harvard Lampoon. Upon graduation he was hired by Esquire magazine—first as an editor, then as a monthly columnist. Later, he became the editor of New York Magazine. It was during a trip to the South in the mid-1980s that he discovered Savannah—a cloistered, inward-looking garden city that basked on the Georgia coast, reveling in its own peculiarities and giving not a thought to the outside world. He was enchanted and began writing about the city and its people in what would eventually become the non-fiction book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. TAYLOR MAC is a MacArthur Fellow, a Pulitzer Prize Finalist, a Tony Award Nominee (for Best Play), and the recipient of the Kennedy Prize (with Matt Ray), the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim, a Drama League Award, a NY Drama Critics Circle Award, two Obie's, two Bessies, and the first American to receive the International Ibsen Award. Mac is the author of Joy and Pandemic (Huntington Theater); The Hang (with Matt Ray); Gary, A Sequel to Titus Andronicus; A 24-Decade History of Popular Music; Hir; The Fre, The Walk Across America For Mother Earth, The Lily's Revenge; The Young Ladies Of; and The Be(A)st of Taylor Mac. The documentary Taylor Mac's A 24-Decade History of Popular Music recently premiered on HBO to critical acclaim.

The Balut Kiki Project turned one year old last May and so we let other people take over the podcast!Christine Abrigana, Asia Podcast Festival-nominated fabulous host of Lagim: A Filipino True Crime Podcast and Asia In The Shadows, takes over the Project to help cast some light on the long -regarded 'invisible' sexual orientation: ASEXUALITY. Jesh Alberto (Philippines), who identifies as a non-binary, homoromantic asexual and a member of the FB group Asexual Support PH , joins Christine on this episode to help demystify this often misunderstood and under-discussed orientation in our wonderfully diverse community. Nope. Choice ba nila 'yan? It is an orientation and not a choice, mga Bes. Alam nyo ba that the A in LGBTQIA2+ stands for asexual, aromantic, agender? Tutal, PRIDE month naman, pakinggan natin ang kwento ni Jesh to hopefully inform the rest of us what it is to live life being asexual. Maraming salamat sa ating Curious Ally for this highly informative take-over! Isang tagay ng mimosa for Bes Christine! Cheers! The Wooster Group, perched on a street corner in Soho in downtown New York, has been at the forefront of experimental theater for some 40 years. Their startling performances unravel and transform classic texts by Brecht, Shakespeare, Chekhov, Eugene O'Neill, along with their own shocking original works. Six Obies, nine Bessies, accolades from around the world as they tour their works through Europe and Asia. Singular, rigorous, flamboyant. Theater. One of the more ephemeral of art forms. How to preserve the work, chronicle it, archive it for the ages? Yes, there are scripts, props, sets, costumes — a pair of muddy shoes from a 1981 production of Route 1 & 9. But what about experimental theater? Devoted to process, improvisation, the dense layering of ideas and texts and sound and image? How do you catalog something in a constant state of flux? Enter Clay Hapaz who started as an intern at The Wooster Group in 1992 and in 2002 became their official archivist. Voices you'll hear include Clay Hapaz, Kate Valk, Frances McDormand, Hilton Als, Peter Sellars, Spalding Gray and Elizabeth LeCompte. Warning: This project contains mature, sensitive, and disturbing themes. Listener discretion is advised. Audio-Suspense Drama this festive season? Bakit hindi, Bessies? We have always championed that QUEER STORIES DESERVE TO BE HEARD. And if there is one queer story we think you should hear, it is MATTHEW SHEPARD's story. Matthew was a young gay man who was tied to a fence on a cold freezing night, beaten unconscious, and left to die. His face was so bloodied except for two tracks from his eyes where his tears fell. Sa kasamaang palad, kakaunting Pinoy lamang ang nakakaalam ng kwento ni Matthew whose story sparked a wave of outrage and protests around the world and pushed for laws protecting the LGBTQIA+ community against bigotry and violence. Maraming haka-haka surrounding Matthew's story, pero iisa ang malinaw: NO HUMAN BEING, gay or straight, black or white, rich or poor, DESERVED TO DIE THE WAY MATTHEW DIED. There have been way too many “Matthews”. How many more “Jennifers”, “Ebengs”, “Cindy Jones'” have to die before we take action? A SOGIE bill has to be passed in the Philippines – NOW. This is our loving remembrance to a brother of our community who was taken from those who loved him too soon. We will never forget, Matthew. With the Miss Globe and Miss Intercontinental titles (and a few more) secured by the Philippines, punctuated by Bea Gomez's Top 5 finish at Miss Universe, does the country retain its reputation as the current pageant powerhouse in the world, universe, cosmos, including all outlying star-systems?Aba mga Bes, kasama natin ang not one, but two, verified pageant insiders na sina CJ (Korona Filiipina) at Alexa (Qrown Philippines). Ganyan namin kayo ka-love, mga Badeng! And how do we love thee, mga Bessies, you ask? Let us count the ways. Pinilit namin si Cj at Alexa to spill the beans about inside information, behind-the-scenes tidbits, with matching sideline commentary tungkol sa mga pageant ganaps during the past year. Pilipinas-Internatiional title? And speaking of International, kamusta na si Hannah? What did MUP do differently this year – did they learn from their ‘mistakes' last year? And we bet na hindi niyo pa ‘to naririnig – ang chika ng mga queens, mas mahirap na daw manalo sa local Philippine pageants vs. international pageants! Kalerkee, diba? Andami pa, Bessies! We kiki-ed about Miss Bahrain, this year's Miss Canada – both victims of toxic Pinoy pageant fandom, kung dapat na bang ibalik ang franchise sa Cubao, at kung makakasira ba ang postponement ng Miss World sa pag-alagwa ng chances ng pambato nating si Tracy. May kulang pa ba? If you are a beauty pageant fiend, must-listen-to ang project nato! The SLC Performance Lab is produced by ContemporaryPerformance.com and the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Theatre Program. During the course, visiting artists to the MFA Theatre Program's Grad Lab are interviewed after leading a workshop with the students. Grad Lab is one of the core components of the program where graduate students work with guest artists and develop group-generated performance experiments. Miguel was interviewed by Andrew Del Vecchio (SLC22) and Jillian Jetton (SLC23). Miguel Gutierrez is a choreographer, composer, performer, singer, writer, educator and arts advocate who has lived in New York for over twenty years. He is fascinated by the time-based nature of performance and how it creates an ideal frame for phenomenological questions around presence and meaning-making. His work proposes an immersive state, for performer and audience alike, where attention itself becomes an elastic material. He believes in an approach to art making that is fierce, fragile, empathetic, political, and irreverent. In recent years he has been occupied with thinking about how he negotiates his queer Latinx identity within the traditions of the white avant-garde. This led to This Bridge Called My Ass, a piece that bends tropes of Latinidad to identify new relationships to content and form. The piece premiered in 2019 at The Chocolate Factory as part of American Realness Festival and tours throughout 2019 and 2020 to a host of venues. He has been presented in more than 60 cities around the world, in venues such as at Centre National de Danse, Centre Pompidou, Festival Universitario, ImPulsTanz, Fringe Arts, Walker Art Center, TBA/PICA, MCA Chicago, Live Arts Bard, American Realness, and the 2014 Whitney Biennial. He has received support from Creative Capital, MAP, National Dance Project, National Performance Network, and Jerome Foundation. He has received fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts, the Tides Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation, United States Artists, an award from Foundation for Contemporary Art, a 2016 Franky Award from Prelude Festival and four Bessies. He is a 2016 Doris Duke Artist. Other recent work includes Cela nous concerne tous (This concerns all of us), a commission for Ballet de Lorraine inspired by the May '68 French protests. With Ishmael Houston-Jones he co-directed Variations on Themes from Lost and Found: Scenes from a Life and other works by John Bernd, which received a 2017 Bessie for Outstanding Revival. He has been an artist in residence at MANCC, LMCC, Centre Choréographique National de Montpellier, Centre National du Danse Pantin, Baryshnikov Art Center, and Gibney. He has created music for several of his works, for Antonio Ramos' work, and with Colin Self for Jen Rosenblit and Simone Aughterlony. He performs with Nick Hallett as Nudity in Dance. He also currently performs a music project called SADONNA: sad versions of upbeat Madonna songs. His book WHEN YOU RISE UP is available from 53rd State Press. His essays have been published in A Life in Dance (ed. Rebecca Stenn and Fran Kirmser), In Terms of Performance: A Keywords Anthology (ed. Shannon Jackson and Paula Marincola) and his essay “Does Abstraction Belong To White People” is one of the most viewed essays on BOMB's website. https://www.miguelgutierrez.org/ photo by Marley Trigg Stewart

Confidence. Honesty. Uniqueness. Perseverance. Authenticity.Jan magaling ang ating mga Bessies! At shempre, hindi magpapahuli ang ating mga panauhing pandangal sa project na ito - Philippine drag royalty, SpacesMNL stalwart Miss Clea Torres and Pinoy Big Brother 2022 Drag Mentor Miss Maria Christina (the artist formerly known as MC BLCK). As two of the country's premiere drag artists, these two ladies school us on Philippine drag her-story and drag in the time of a pandemic. They kiki with us about why they got into drag, what they get out of it, and how they deal with a (sometimes) toxic fan base. They identify where the current center of drag is and kung may rivalry nga ba among drag artists from different parts of the country. At mga drag pushers din pala ang ating mga guests dahil, aside from the fact na may mga tine-train silang mga drag babies sa kanilang Drag Academy ng Spaces MNL, they will also share with us their very personal process of creating their own drag personas. Choices! Choices! Warning: This project contains mature and sensitive themes such as depression and suicide. Listener discretion is advised. If you are a Filipino living in the Philippines and you, or somebody you know, are undergoing depression or having suicidal thoughts, try talking to somebody you trust or go to the link: DOH NCMH Crisis Hotline Huwag mag-atubiling tumawag. It's okay to ask for help.Today is the last day of September, Suicide Prevention Month. We opted to release this bonus episode as a reminder to everyone how suicide has become so prevalent in society that it is now vital for each of us to be more mindful of how our friends and loved ones are doing in these very stressful times - every single day. Death is a difficult conversation, most especially in Philippine culture where it is considered morbid and even taboo. Perhaps, this has contributed to some Filipinos' trepidation in opening up regarding their thoughts and feelings about the subject matter because they are often dismissed and avoided. We chanced upon this audio recording of two of our Bessies who have been forthcoming about their attempts at self-harm in the recent past owing to personal mental health diagnoses and how talking about these things help put their own feelings about suicide and their mortality in proper perspective. This is a purely raw and unedited recording (apart from the intro and outro) of Mel and Geoff just having an unguarded conversation prior to a recording session reflecting on a friend's death by suicide and its effect on family and friends. They talk about learning about the deaths of other people, both celebrities and unknown, and how death - and life - should never be taken for granted. It is our humble aim to encourage other Filipinos to open up about their feelings so that they can be properly supported. It is important to normalize - not trivialize - these conversations. It is not enough to join the "it is okay to not be okay" bandwagon without offering the needed support and assistance. The lack of available and free mental health services in the country is lamentable enough. Our culture of avoidance and dismissiveness do not help. Check up on your loved ones, no matter how "okay" they may seem. If you are going through a rough time, find somebody you can trust and who might understand. Otherwise, be a good and empathetic listener to somebody who is. For more resources, visit our website. MATURE CONTENT WARNING. Chupa. Pagsuso. Hada. Fellatio. Sa history of terms associated with oral stimulation of the penis, akalain mong may ibang gamit pala ang ‘chupa' sa Pilipinas noong araw na hindi bastos – at nasa batas pa! Kung may, fellatio, ano naman ang irrumatio? And may mga kultura pala in other parts of the world kung saan normal itong ginagawa ng mga magulang sa kanilang mga anak. From delving into Freudian concepts to its depictions in mythology, art, and poetry, hanggang sa personal experiences, preferences, and techniques, malalaman natin kung advisable ba na mag-toothbrush before performing oral sex, o mas okay ba ang mumog-mumog na lang muna? If you've read this far, hmmm, mukhang mas may alam ka pa sa mga bessies natin! Aminin! And there's nothing wrong with that. It's time we normalized these conversations among consenting adults! (Warning: Adult themes, language, explicit content.)Real talk, mga Bessies. Ito ang mga nag-huhumindig na katotohanan: The World Health Organization defines sexual health as fundamental to the overall health and well-being of individuals, couples and families, and to the social and economic development of communities and countries. Sexual health, when viewed affirmatively, requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. 2019 was the ninth consecutive year that the Philippines has reported a rise in teenage pregnanciesThe Philippines has recorded a 7% increase in births among girls aged 15 and below in 2019, up from the figure on teenage pregnancies in 2018.Filipino minors who gave birth in 2019 increased to 62,510 from 62,341 in 2018.There is a strong scientific consensus that providing people—in particular, adolescents—access to information and services related to sexual and reproductive health is not linked to increases in sexual activity.Population-level trends likewise affirm this conclusion, as interventions such as the HPV vaccine, affordable contraceptive access and comprehensive sex education programs have not led to more sexual activity.Despite strong evidence debunking the “promiscuity” argument, social conservatives continue to use it as a pretext to block or undermine policies and programs that make sexual and reproductive health information and services more available. So what's stopping us from normalizing healthy conversations about sex, mga Bes?Tara na! More information at neilgoldberg.com. ABOUT THE TITLE: SHE'S A TALKER was the name of Neil’s first video project. “One night in the early 90s I was combing my roommate’s cat and found myself saying the words ‘She’s a talker.’ I wondered how many other other gay men in NYC might be doing the exact same thing at that very moment. With that, I set out on a project in which I videotaped over 80 gay men in their living room all over NYC, combing their cats and saying ‘She’s a talker.’” A similar spirit of NYC-centric curiosity and absurdity animates the podcast.

"I have not seen anything in the US as extreme as what I have seen [in Australia] in the past week." - Deborah Jowitt In the second episode of season three, Angela, Jana, and Beth speak to Deborah Jowitt, legendary dance critic and the idol of everyone in the room. A long-term critical columnist for The Village Voice (1967-2011), Jowitt has created an immensely influential body of work that includes four books - the latest of which, on Jerome Robbins, was published by Simon and Schuster in 2004. Having lectured at Princeton, Barnard, and Tisch School of the Arts, and recipient of two Bessies, and a Guggenheim Fellowship, Deborah Jowitt is one of the seminal voices of and for the 20th century dance. "People were concerned, there seemed to be disaster all round: enmity between countries, the possibility of bombs falling. I really thought: we're going aerobic. We're going to tone our bodies so we can run all the way from New York to Westchester county without getting hit." - Deborah Jowitt The conversation took place during the Keir Choreographic Awards, as we were recovering from an intense week of seeing Australian emerging contemporary dance, discussing contemporary dance, and making contemporary dance happen, and there was a sense of intense camaraderie in the room. It was really beautiful, being able to speak about the value of criticism, the worth it creates, by drawing on the experiences of someone who has seen half a century of dance go by, who wrote its history, who taught us how to see dance when we had no storyline, no character, and no balletic vocabulary to hook onto. This was very, very special. Discussed in this episode: it's not 'the body', but 'the dancers'; the 1960s revolution against elitism; incorporating the building janitor into a choreography; pilates; Keir Choreographic Awards, and where is the dancing in contemporary dancing?; ideas that cannot be physically fleshed out – what fuels it in Australia?; the overuse of the word 'ephemeral'; how to legitimise a new form; Judson Dance Theater; how criticism creates desire; and that not being a good artist doesn't mean you're not a good person. "The work reveals itself to you, if you’re open and receptive." - Deborah Jowitt Enjoy and stay tuned: we have more exciting and stimulating conversations to come.
