Sean Keane! Comedian! Writer! Podcaster! Friend! Delight! More! Sean is a funny friend and a great comedian with a new standup album out (his debut!) RIGHT NOW! It's called "America's Uncle Dad" and here's some more info about it! ABOUT AMERICA'S UNCLE DAD: Sean Keane is a Bay Area native, and America's Uncle Dad is very much a Bay Area album. It was recorded at the Punch Line in San Francisco and everyone the world over can relate to Sean's lampooning of mass transit, (white) yoga culture, psychedelics, growing up with an adorable lisp, and a truly riotous take-down of a Simon and Garfunkel classic that we promise will forever change how you hear the song. Keane grew up in the East Bay and moved to San Francisco. He started putting on stand-up shows in college at Berkeley, where he was the editor-in-chief of the campus humor magazine, The Heuristic Squelch. He currently lives in Oakland with his fiancé and their Aussie doodle puppy, Pinot Noir. Sean began doing stand-up himself in 2005 when he “...stopped just writing funny things for the internet or magazines and started actually saying them into a microphone in public…it turns out you start doing stand-up comedy by just doing stand-up comedy”. We're certainly glad he did, and the material he has crafted and honed since then makes America's Uncle Dad a remarkable and hilarious debut, and Sean is sure to be your favorite of all your relatives. MORE ABOUT SEAN KEANE: Sean Keane is a writer, stand-up comedian and co-host of the Roundball Rock NBA podcast. He has contributed to "Another Period," "Billy On The Street," NBC, Comedy Central, ESPN The Magazine and McSweeney's. In 2014, the SF Bay Guardian named him the best comedian in San Francisco, then immediately went out of business. We had a great chat! You can have a great listen! Welcome to Flashback Friday! With 700+ episodes in our archive, we're excited to revisit some of our favorites with y'all! We're flashing not too far back to episode 700 when we sat down IN PERSON with actor Luke MacFarlane and co-writer/actor Billy Eichner of the film BROS. It was such a great interview and we really loved this movie and now that it's streaming on Peacock (and other streaming services!) we wanted to get the word out that you can watch it from the comfort of wherever you are. Original episode notes are below. You are landing on our 700th episode y'all. Did you read that.....700 EPISODES. So, of course we brought fire - writer, comedian, actor Billy Eichner and actor Luke Macfarlane talking about their film Bros. We were lucky to be able to watch the U.S. premiere of the film a few weeks back at the beautiful Castro Theater in San Francisco and it was an experience. The movie is so good! Lots of laugh out loud moments (so many we missed some of the dialogue), sweet and loving moments, and some HOT love scenes cause they could. We had an absolute great time talking with Luke and Billy and we hope that after you listen to our convo, you'll head out this weekend and see Bros. It's such a triumphant first major studio LGBTQ rom-com (lead by an LGBTQ cast) and yeah, you can take your teens, parents, family, and friends to see it because it's that accessible. Plus there are some fantastic cameos in Bros - you will hoot and holler when you see them. On a personal note, we are so proud to hit this major milestone of our podcast and to have folks like Billy and Luke featured on this show. We want to thank you for listening, following, commenting, rating and reviewing us. If you haven't followed us on socials or written a review or rated us, we want to ask you to do that after you listen to this episode. With Halloween approaching, there are further spooky movie recommendations to be found on this week's episode of the Movie Squad podcast, featuring Tristan Fidler and Cecilia Allen talking movies with Breakfast host Taylah Strano. But we also balance the horror recommendations with lighter fare, like a bright and funny rom-com! First, Cecilia discusses the new movie, Bros, which stars comedian Billy Eichner (of Billy On The Street) who has also co-written and produced (along with Judd Apatow) the first gay romantic comedy released by a major Hollywood studio. Eichner plays Bobby (Eichner), a successful podcaster and LGBTQ+ historian who is happy with his single life in New York, yet falls in love with a muscular lawyer, Aaron (Luke Macfarlane). Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bad Neighbours). Released into cinemas this week. Then, Tristan makes a reservation and checks in with a new horror film called Barbarian, which has received a lot of positive word-of-mouth and warnings to "go in without reading anything about it." A young woman (Georgina Campbell) visiting Detroit for a job interview books an Airbnb. Arriving in the dead of night, she finds another person has booked the same house, Keith (Bill Skarsgard from It). From there, the film heads slowly into the unexpectedly horrifying. Directed by Zach Cregger. Out in cinemas now.

DC roasts a sweet potato for a really long time then adds butter, tahini, lemon and sea salt (do it!) then chats with Alex Scordelis (Difficult People, Billy On The Street) about depraved In-N-Out orders, the lineage of cakes with hidden good luck charms inside, Flaming Dr. Peppers, secret fantasy football tribunals, his Neil Young cover band the Cinnamon Boys, and a whole lot more!
Are Josh Gondelman and I the same person?? In this episode, we find out we have a million similarities in our early comedy influences, how we started doing stand-up, and many, many other eerie coincidences. Starting comedy in Boston, his career has taken him to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Desus and Mero. Give it a listen!Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon and Pandora.Josh Gondelman is a writer and comedian who incubated in Boston before moving to New York City, where he currently lives and works as a writer and producer for Desus & Mero on Showtime. Previously, he spent five years at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, first as a web producer and then as a staff writer where he earned four Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and three WGA Awards. In 2016, Josh made his late night standup debut on Conan (TBS), and he has also performed on Late Night With Seth Meyers (NBC) and The Late Late Show with James Corden (CBS). And, if you remember this far back, he was the co-creator of the popular Modern Seinfeld Twitter account. Onstage, Josh charms audiences using his good-natured storytelling and cracks them up with his sharp, pointy wit. He takes topics from surprise parties to his experience teaching preschool and makes them all equally hilarious. Josh’s most recent album Dancing On a Weeknight came out in 2019 on Blonde Medicine Records. (His prior album Physical Whisper debuted in March of 2016 at #1 on the iTunes comedy charts (as well as #4 on the Billboard comedy chart) and stayed there for…well…longer than he expected, honestly.)Offstage, Gondelman is also the co-author (along with Joe Berkowitz) of the book You Blew It, published October 2015 by Plume. Waddup, book nerds! This week our special guest Josh Gondelman (Desus & Mero, Last Week Tonight, Billy On The Street) made us read Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. “Book One” of Scientology spent 28 weeks as a NYT bestseller after it was released in 1950. That’s pre-becoming-a-religion!! But why? Mean Book Club breaks it down.Mean Book Club is four ladies (UCB, BuzzFeed, College Humor, Impractical Jokers) who read, discuss and whine about NYT bestselling books that have questionable literary merit. It's fun. It's cathartic. It's perfect for your commute. New podcast (almost) every Tuesday! If you want to read along with us during our 5th season, here’s the reading list:* Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding * How To Win Friends by Dale Carnegie * Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus by John Gray * Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (Part 1 & Part 2) * I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell by Tucker Max * Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard * Congo by Michael Crichton * The Woman in the Window by AJ Finn You can get more Josh Gondelman on Twitter @joshgondelman and you can buy his new book Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results at https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0062852752/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0Send any future book suggestions to meanbookclub@gmail.com! Originally aired January 8, 2013 Janie’s hobnobbing at the BILLY ON THE STREET premiere leads to a run-in with agist misogamists, Aaron is finally forced to tackle the age-old query, “why DOES pop go fizz?” And the duo’s Twalking Point gets SMSsy when they debate the merits of personally signing each and every iMessage. Plus, which seat on a plane is best: aisle or window? And what’s really wrong with people who claim to not watch TV? Gotta question for Janie and Aaron? 2017 TV Resolutions (1:01:09) /// Our Week in TV: Frontline, “Divided States of America” (13:47) // Terrace House (23:02) // Billy on the Street (29:13) // Speechless (37:33) // Fresh Off the Boat (42:40) // Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (47:56)
When the Captain's away the crew comes out to play - a trivia game that is! Our New Years episode kicks off 2017 with questions, debates, and deeply personal insights to some of the crew's proclivities, Billy on the Street style. Featuring the return of Steely Eyed Missile Man and Stowaway, the crew get into it (and it we mean terrible alcohol) while Fearless Flyer listens from afar, proud of Flying Dutchman's terrible terrible jokes.
Producer, writer, DJ, comedian, and American satirist Jake Fogelnest sits down with Josh for a psychedelic, high-energy trip down memory lane. The Wet Hot American Summer, Billy On The Street, and Difficult People collaborator discusses what it's like to have your own talk show at age 14, getting MTV to decorate your bedroom, and the terrible rudeness of Twitter. Also covered: Kids, Kids, and Teens. If you miss this one, you're telling the world you don't enjoy fun. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jake Fogelnest is a popular writer for Wet Hot American Summer on Netflix, Difficult People on Hulu, Billy On The Street on TruTV, TBS, and Funny Or Die. His life growing up in NYC brings lots of interesting twists and turns. Outro music: Raven, Rook and Crow courtesy of Sam Ryder.
I like to think I was something of a precocious whippersnapper, but writer, director, producer, podcaster, television personality Jake Fogelnest (Wet Hot American Summer, Billy On The Street, Difficult People) has me beat. At age 7 he wanted to be John Waters... and then actually contacted and spoke with John Waters. (I merely wrote a fan letter to animal expert Joan Embery and received a perfunctory written reply.) He went on to host a public access show, Squirt TV, from his bedroom in Manhattan which was later picked up by MTV all before going to rehab at the age of 17. Eventually he found UCB which is when, he says, his real career began. We discussed all this plus Terry Gross, The Monkees, the difference between Adam Driver and Ryan Seacrest, sobriety, resentments, self-care, selling out and so much more. We also took your questions over Twitter and did a round of Just Me Or Everyone.
Our esteemed colleague and EHG first-timer Allison Lowe Huff headed up the Madam Secretary discussion committee this week before Liv and Dave filed reports on Face Off and Billy Eichner, respectively. We also put a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode to a vote (...at Tenagra), tried to solve The Mysteries Of Laura, and fell for Gravity Falls before taking a trip through fictional small-town America during Game Time. Is Space Louis a real place? What does "Shaka" mean? And is Tea Leoni really our most underrated actress? Join us for state dinner and a movie on Extra Hot Great.Special Guest: Allison Lowe Huff.
