The Unmakers: Meet Mercha - ‘A digital platform in an analogue industry'Mercha can claim to be the first branded merchandise player in Australia to have fully digitised its processes in what remains marketing's arguably most analogue sector.Last month the company wrapped up a $300,000 crowd-funded seed round, valuing it at around $10m.In today's edition of The Unmakers, Unmade's Tim Burrowes talks to CEO Ben Read and chief revenue officer Sam Hardy about why the promotional marketing sector has taken so long to scale up in Australia. As Hardy puts it: “Mercha is a digital platform in an analogue, old school industry.”Over just three years, Mercha has ramped up to a turnover of $2.9m in the last financial year.Promotional merchandise is also a sector facing headwinds as sustainability moves further up the agenda. Mercha claims to be part of the solution by focusing on products that people will want to keep. Says Read: “It is shocking to me that 66% of promotional products end up in landfill. That is just disgusting to me. It should never happen.“We're trying to be better than an industry that is not trying hard enough.”By way of example, Hardy adds: “We had a radio station out of Sydney ask us very early on in the piece to do 250,000 whistles for a New Year's Eve event. Plastic whistles next to the harbour. And it would have been great, the revenue. But we turned it down.“I draw the line on offering people crap that's going into the bin or offering people product that's not made fairly.”Unmade Index red up top, green belowThe Unmade Index slipped on Wednesday after Nine, the biggest locally listed media and marketing stock lost 1.6% to fall back to a market capitalisation of $1.9bn.The move added to the daylight between Nine and its 60.1% owned subsidiary Domain. In the company's annual report released on Tuesday, it said it had written down the value of its Vampr “LinkedIn for musicians” platform, founded by CEO Josh Simons, by $1.8m, but remained “bullish”.The Unmade Index slipped by 0.7% to 461 points.Today's podcast was edited by Abe's Audio. Send me a messageToday's friend of the pod is Adam Verwey, someone I was really pleased to meet towards the end of 2023 and he began sharing with me his work at SIX - Sustainable Investment Exchange - and how it was going to deliberately combine the worlds of activism and change making with that of retail wealth management. I was immediately excited to begin to appreciate how Adam and his team are looking to extend the ethical investment world into something that leverages the passion and enthusiasm of everyday people to drive intentional and deliberate change within large listed businesses.Over my career I've come to appreciate that change is largely only possible in big corporate institutions with the buy in and support of top executives and board directives. Something that has been difficult to access and work towards in busy, myopic and short termist organisational cultures where shareholder primacy and obligation management are most important. At the same time, the advent of many disclosure frameworks have created a pretty strong, and in my opinion inaccurate, signal that issues like climate change and modern slavery are being managed effectively. I'm firmly of the belief that institutional capital has an enormous potential to be directed into or away from creating the societies and economies we want to exist in. Its opportunity to intervene in meaningful ways to alter the trajectory we as a species are currently on is incredible, only matched by the incredible barriers and challenges that exist in breaching the mindsets and psychologies that keep the current system largely locked in place.Enter SIX, and the likes of Adam Verwey. A financial services maverick who for two decades has been pioneering new ways of thinking about and investing for meaningful change. He spent nearly a decade at Australian Ethical Investments, before going on to co-found Future Super - Australia's first truly no fossil fuel exposed super fund. A couple of years ago he took a sabbatical and is returning to the scene at the moment with his very exciting new venture SIX.We speak about SIX, going through what they're doing, how they're doing it, why they're doing it and what that means for you as a customer. We get into some of Adam's background and origin story and why and how he's managed to sustain himself, where ethical investing has come from and is possibly going towards, as well as the opportunity for you to participate in their open crowdfunding process. head to Birchal.com/company/six for more information on this and join the expression of interest registry.I really enjoyed this conversation with Adam, and I appreciated the time in a really busy week for him and his team. I came away reminded and encouraged that people like Adam continue to press and seek to persuade change in systemic ways and that it's possible to use the existing tools of the system to do this. I hope by listening you're able to gain a new perspective on what might be right under your nose to attempt to use as a vehicle for action.Today's show is delivered with Gilay Estate. Today's episode focuses on an everyday accessible solution that provides the GIFT of health and wellness services to support to those who need it. This is something that can be integrated into any Workplace Wellness Program and shared with our family, friends and communities. Nikki Williams is a repeat entrepreneur, marketer and health and wellness advocate who has recently launched Mentwell; a digital gift card for health and wellness services where the receiver gets to choose how they redeem, at any service provider, Australia-wide. This means GPs, dentists, psychologists, all Allied Health, all alternative and complementary therapies, gyms, yoga and pilates studios, wellness centres, retreats and more. It's evident that Nikki has a unique ability to use her life experiences as a way of fuelling her passion when it comes to her work life. First, music was a coping mechanism to deal with a challenging family situation; so she became a music manager and PR professional. Then she dove head first into hospitality as a job, but realised she wanted to help hospitality owners and operators, so she started a successful digital marketing agency for this sector. Then wellness became important during a particularly difficult time during Covid, so she created a kids yoga mat company and started building Mentwell. Now Nikki is on a mission to make wellness the 3.0 of gifting. We've had material gifts like flowers and chocolates, then we moved to experience based gifting like hot air balloon rides, and now gifting wellness allows one another to potentially change the lives of those around us. Just 22 weeks after launching Mentwell, Nikki and her team have $5.8m in sales revenue secured for 2024 and are raising $1.5m through a Birchal crowdfunding campaign in May, 2024. Nikki dreams of being able to be a philanthropist as a full time job, helping to increase the global health and wellness of our communities, in particular those who are less fortunate or disadvantaged. Nikki has continuously used her intuition and curiosity to create businesses and she's excited to share her journey with Mentwell so far with our community. During our dynamic conversation, we dive into: The significant changes taking place in the health and wellbeing space The power of gifting Mentwell, Australia's FIRST Health and Wellness Gift Card What choosing to align with Mentwell could mean for your business How embracing discipline rather than motivation can be transformational in each of our lives And so much more. In this episode, Ryan speaks with Matt Vitale the CEO and co-found of Birchal. Birchal is Australia's leading crowdfunding platform, which has supported approximately 200 businesses in raising the capital they need to scale.Crowd or community funding platforms are providing a new source of growth capital for entrepreneurs and in the process, are playing a critical role in supporting next generation of Australian businesses.Today's start-ups could be tomorrow's Titans. Great ideas need early funding to scale, and often this is out of reach for businesses who cannot appeal to venture or growth managers. Some of our own clients, were able to grow their business on the back of successful community funding campaigns and went on to become leaders in their respective industry. Similarly, top-tier VC funds in Australia have also participated in community rounds via Birchal, reflecting the developing ecosystem. Equally, on the investment side, Crowdfunding can democratise access to an asset class that is otherwise limited to professional or institutional investors. This episode is an invaluable listen for founders of high-growth businesses, and investors with an interest in supporting early-stage, Australian companies.Disclaimer: The information in this podcast series is for general financial educational purposes only, should not be considered financial advice and is only intended for wholesale clients. This is a show about building creative and rewarding careers in and around the world of drinks. My guest on this episode is James Young. James is the founder of Old Young's, a small WA distillery in the Swan Valley that makes gin and vodka — and one which has racked up a number of big accolades since beginning in 2016. In 2017 and 2018 they were named champion Australian distiller at the highly regarded Australian Distilled Spirits Awards. More recently — just the other week in fact — at the Icons of Gin Awards in London, Old Young's was named both the craft producer of the year AND the brand innovator of the year for the Old Young's Juniper Society, a monthly subscription product that came about during the darker days of the pandemic. So in this episode James shares some interesting thoughts about the costs involved in opening a distillery (and what it would take to do it today), how and more importantly why he set up a distillery despite having no background in the discipline; the importance of making products with a reason for being which can be applied not just to spirits, but to the bar world as well, and their efforts — which are underway right now — to fund the next phase of the brand through the Birchal platform and crowdsourced funding. Their stretch target as James talks about here is $3 million and when I last looked this morning, it looks like they'll get there.

You've got a list as long as your arm of ideas to grow your business. And I'm guessing some of those ideas will happen all in good time. Summary: Our guest on this episode of the DevReady podcast is Matt Vitale, Co-founder of Birchal equity crowdfunding. Matt and the other co-founders combined their knowledge from their different industries to create Birchal with the goal of making the site mainly focused on the companies and facilitating a seamless process for the transaction from beginning to end. Birchal was an integral part of the lifting of the Australian government's restrictions on equity crowdfunding several years ago, and they continue to impact related legislation as the company and the industry continue to grow in popularity and scope. The Birchal team has a very specific process for reviewing companies who are interested in posting campaigns on the site which includes both objective and subjective filters to ensure that the idea is viable before it is presented to potential investors. Through the expression of interest process, companies are able to gauge interest and receive pledges before ultimately launching their campaigns. Birchal is Australia's leading crowdfunding platform, accounting for more than half of the monies invested through crowdfunding last year. For more information about hosting a campaign on Birchal or if you have further questions for Matt, don't hesitate to reach out. Topics Covered: ● How Birchal was formed ● Equity crowdfunding ● How government regulation has impacted and continues to impact the industry ● The process that companies go through in order to post campaigns on Birchal ● Which businesses should pursue crowdfunding ● Getting feedback from interested investors ● Guiding companies to appropriate valuations ● Crowdfunding as a vehicle for fundraising ● Which campaigns are successful during COVID ● How to handle investors who are ready to cash out their investments ● The healthy tension between the company and their investors Key Quotes ❏ “It took about 5 years for the government to realize it wanted to do this and then pass the legislation to do it.” (2:55) ❏ “Looking back, it was a very effective execution of building technology for what is often a fairly complicated process.” (4:39) ❏ “It's all about finding the relevant audience for each company and treating each campaign as a discrete project.” (9:47) ❏ “It's all about momentum.” (15:16) ❏ “When we started the platform, we decided to quite deliberately describe the businesses that we want to work with as those that have a strong consumer proposition.” (18:58) ❏ “It's about finding an audience that will derive benefit from your success.” (20:58) ❏ “Things are worth what people are willing to pay for them.” (22:38) ❏ “You want to give them enough information so they're interested in you and then have this opportunity for engagement.” (26:29) ❏ “Every campaign that we host has at least a handful of investors that are investing over $10,000.” (31:27) ❏ “Crowdfunding is still open for business.” (37:24) ❏ “The trouble that we have is with the law.” (44:54) Contact Matt: https://www.birchal.com/ matt@birchal.com

In this episode of the podcast, we’re going to dive deep into how important video is when it comes to crowdfunding campaigns with guests Alan Crabbe from Pozible and Matt Hepburn from Your Mates Brewing Co. Originally from Northern Ireland, Alan is the co-founder and CEO of Pozible & Birchal. Alan introduced Crowdfunding to Australia and Asia pacific in 2010. The Pozible platform was developed to help creatives build audiences, raise funds and get ideas off the ground. In late 2017, Alan launched a sister platform called Birchal - a new licensed equity crowdfunding for brands to connect with investors. The sites have hosted thousands of projects and capital raises in Australia and the platforms have helped raise over $100 million since 2010. Matt Hepburn is the co-founder of Your Mates Brewing Co. Their story began in the small coastal town of Moffat Beach on the Sunshine Coast. In 2013, they quit their professional jobs, started slingin’ beers at the local bar and began the adventure of a lifetime. In 2015, they launched their first beer ‘Larry’ on the Sunshine Coast. They were literally working 90+ hours a week perfecting their recipe, running sales, accounts, deliveries, events whilst working their bar jobs to ensure they could float their tiny business. In June 2017, they had a great opportunity to brew the beer themselves at Macleods Brewing Co. in Maleny. Over the years, Christen had brewed on 10 different systems with a large number of various brewing mentors. In 2018, they became the first brewing company in Australia to participate on the national television show ‘Shark Tank’. Your Mates Brewing Co. was not only built without blood sweat and beers, but the whole of the Sunshine Coast, is now in the best position possible to become bigger than they could have ever dreamed. Your Mates represents everything that is good about beer and they love their customers value this as much as them; drinking good beer, with good mates and having a good time doing it!
