“One day you will tell your story of how you overcame what you went through and it will be someone else's survival guide”. Berney Brown  Welcome to the last episode of season 5! Today's episode of Race, Culture & Beyond: A Naked Conversation Podcast is a significant celebration of how much we have accomplished in 5 seasons of speaking up and contributing to the conversation on racism. Welcome back to another episode of Race, Culture & Beyond, A Naked Conversation Podcast! In today's episode, we have an exceptional guest with us who will share with us all about her journey towards becoming a poet and how her writing has a special connection with religion, childhood, trauma, and racism.   Dr. Rochelle Robinson-Dukes is a professor at the city college of Chicago, where she teaches literature and English composition. She has been published in African American Review, Another Chicago Magazine, Poetry Hall, The Raven's Perch, among many others. In addition, she's the editor of Brownstone Barrio Bards, a journal celebrating its twentieth edition this year (you can find the link to the journal on Lulu, Amazon, and Apple Books).    Dr. Rochelle Robinson-Dukes began writing when she was only 8 years old. She started writing because she felt it was the best way to express her emotions, given that she comes from an era of “children should be seen and not heard.” She was also raised in a religious background that did not allow her to express her thoughts transparently. As a result, Rochelle put off writing for a couple of years, and the year of the pandemic gave her back that space to write about all of the bottled-up feelings she had.    Dr. Robinson-Dukes also speaks about how she never felt she couldn't do anything. She accomplished everything she set her mind to and raised her son based on those beliefs. Rochelle gives those examples to her children: to never accept judgment, categories, or labels. And to instead look up to the leaders we have or have had.    We cover many topics including storytelling in Black culture, religion, abandonment issues, racism, family history and trauma, and self-awareness.    Thank you for listening to the show. Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Naked Conversations! Today's episode will be a review of many important matters happening at the moment. As most of our episodes begin, we will be speaking about what we're currently into:  Ramy on Hulu  Dave Chapelle The prophets, a novel by Robert Jones Jr.   We will also be discussing awkward moments, for instance, how Sage found herself in a teenage theater play and found it offensive for herself and her son, who watched it with her. Finally, we talk about the importance of time, place, and audience and how we sometimes don't enjoy what everyone else finds hilarious. One of the most significant subjects discussed during this episode will be Juneteenth: “Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics, and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing.” We will discuss the importance of this date, its history, and why it is a time to honor and date June 19th. Welcome to the sixth episode of our fifth season of Race, Culture & Beyond: A Naked Conversations Podcast! In today’s episode, we will be talking a little bit about the Derek Chauvin trial and the bitter-sweet feeling over it. Even though the verdict leaves us with relief and sweet emotion, the fact that we have so much more work to do regarding racism is the bitter part of it.  We will also be discussing what it is like to have a “Black card” and how easily it can feel like we’re losing it if we don’t fit the “expectations.” Erica speaks about hilarious experiences, like trying to join a Facebook group for Black women and actually having to ask her husband and friends about the correct answers to be able to be a part of the group. As for Sage, does she want to be “woke?” Is she?  But what about liking Black music and influence from growing up in Philly?  We also share the definition of woke, and how it isn’t precisely a term that white people can be entitled to: Stay woke became a watchword in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, questioning the dominant paradigm and striving for something better. But stay woke and woke became part of a wider discussion in 2014, immediately following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The word woke became entwined with the Black Lives Matter movement; instead of just being a word that signaled awareness of injustice or racial tension, it became a word of action. Activists were woke and called on others to stay woke. Merriam-Webster dictionary    Thank you for listening to the show. It is such an honor to have these conversations with you. Welcome to a new episode of Race, Culture & Beyond: A Naked Conversations Podcast. In today’s episode, our special guest Amy Nelson will share with us her thoughts on racism and education.  Amy Nelson (she/her/hers) works full-time supporting schools and school leaders with equity-focused school improvement and developing authentic partnerships with families and the community.  She is a scholar-activist, racial justice advocate, and youth organizer.   Amy is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Educational Studies, Innovation, and Reform, with a focus on social justice and equity in education (just passed oral exams last week!).  Amy has over 15 years of experience in education, both in the United States and abroad.  She brings with her a wealth of experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families. Her dedication to social justice and equity in education can be seen across many platforms: community involvement, participation on equity-based committees, teaching experience, volunteer work, as well as her research. Through her research, she aims to amplify voices that are historically marginalized, both within our education systems and in society as a whole.  Amy shares her own experiences as a Black student navigating mostly white schools, and how that contributed to the work she now does.  She discusses lessons learned from teaching in other parts of the world and how those experiences informed her current work. The main questions answered during this episode center around “How can we do better to support equity in our schools?” Schools should be great equalizers and a place where everyone feels included. Unfortunately, they don’t. We must ask ourselves, do our students feel seen at school? Are they hiding any aspects of their identity? If they can’t show up as their authentic selves, they most probably won’t be able to achieve what they truly want. During this episode, we also discuss the relationship teachers must grow with their students. Only by relating to them, listen, and care, can we expect a change in educational spaces. In today's episode, we have a very particular conversation around Black-ish, an American sitcom television series created by Kenya Barris. Black-ish generates a conversation through the lens of race in daily life and makes us question if comedy is an effective way of talking about what truly matters.   We share: A brief description of the scene that got us talking about a sitcom's impact on a serious matter like race. What we felt while watching it. Was it okay to laugh? How humor might be an effective way to reach out to people and encourage people to research and investigate more on those subjects that matter. Why you should not be quiet when it comes to talking about your point of view.    Some of the most exciting pieces you will find in this episode are also women's points of view when discussing these racial matters and interesting facts regarding the percentage of black and white people who watch the show.   Thank you for listening to the show. Viva a revolução do áudio!! Eles adicionaram as seguintes marcas: bloco, transcrição, financiamento, localização e capítulos. At some point, many podcasters feel the need to share the knowledge they have gained with other less experienced podcasters. But how you do that, and how you bill yourself and the materials you have to present matters.  Do We Need Another Book About Podcasting?   There’s always room for more books about podcasting. But have you amassed the experience necessary to allow you to fill a book about podcasting? This may come off a bit hypocritical of me, as I had less than a year of podcasting experience under my belt when I started writing https://www.wiley.com/en-mq/Podcasting+For+Dummies-p-9780471748984 (Podcasting for Dummies). The same goes for the other early podcasting books like https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1887056.Podcasting (Podcasting: Do-It-Yourself Guide), written by http://twitter.com/geeknews (Todd Cochrane) of https://blubrry.com/ (Blubbry) and http://vig-fp.pearsoned.com/educator/product/Tricks-of-the-Podcasting-Masters/9780789735744.page (Tricks of The Podcasting Masters), written http://twitter.com/podcast411 (Rob Walsh) from https://libsyn.com/ (Libsyn).  But a lot of time has passed, and podcasting is no longer brand new. So while you can write a book about podcasting today, there’s a lot of ground—and history—to cover. Are you up to that task? Should You Write A How-To Podcast Course? If you feel you really do have a unique take on podcasting that is worthy of a course, then yes, absolutely, you should make that course. But take some time to do some research on what already is out there, and have a self-check-in to make sure you can deliver the goods. Reputation matters in this space, and there are plenty of people with tarnished reputations in podcasting. We have a long memory. You really don’t want to be That Guy. Should You Become A Podcast Coach? If you do want to coach, drill down on what you do best. If audio engineering is your kick, then maybe you can coach people on getting the most out of a particular DAW or a select group of audio plugins. Perhaps you’re an excellent editor of the written word and could coach people on transforming text written to be read into something written to be narrated and heard. Or maybe you’re a Speech-Language Pathologist and are able to coach podcasters on how to get the most of out their voice as a vocal coach.  Is Podcast Mentorship Right For You? If you're a regular listener/reader of my content and you've been podcasting for a while, you’d probably make a great mentor for another podcaster! I prefer unstructured mentor/mentee relationships (hi, https://twitter.com/steph_colbourn (Steph)!) and mentorships that are free. Just remember that being a mentor is not the same thing as being a coach or a teacher. The dynamic is different when the person on the other end is a student. The expectation of the one passing on the knowledge—that’s you—is different as well. To me, mentorship is much more general and open-ended in nature. Coaching and teaching tend to be best when they are highly specialized and have a well-defined goal, outcome, and end-date. So which is the right approach for you? Suggestion: get your peers involved and crowdsource the decision. Reach out to a small number of people you trust—people who know you and who won’t bullshit you—asking for their input. Include a link to this article so they can quickly understand the possibilities and pitfalls. Then review their feedback and make your best decision.  Tomorrow morning, I’ll be hosting a room on Clubhouse that’s all about https://www.joinclubhouse.com/event/xBg3DY57 (keeping the magic of podcasting alive in you, the person behind the microphone). I’d love for you to join me. And do let me know if you need an invite. Just like the world, Naked Conversations is shifting and changing. This season is a collection of real, honest, and sometimes messy conversations between two friends. We’ll explore racism, antiracism, interracial friendship, activism, books, films, and more through our different lived experiences. We’ll offer questions and actions to help you go deeper into your exploration of race & culture, find your own inner disruptor, and be a part of the solution. Occasionally, we’ll bring you interviews with others who are experts in this work so we can learn together and do better. In this episode we share: The first time Erica felt the pain and terror of being called the N-word  What triggers Sage when it comes to talking about race  How Erica confronted “polite and curious” questions about her ethnicity  What shocked Erica about the white people she interacted with during a “racial healing” conversation  What Sage’s daughter had to say about the Madam Vice President-Elect, Kamala Harris Thank you thank you for listening to the show.  It is such an honor and joy to have these conversations with you. Yet again, I’m so amazed by the women I get to talk to on this show.  It gives me hope for the world every, single time… Rachel is a teacher, an activist, a leader, and a hugely kind hearted person.   She tackles big, challenging topics of racial equity, school inclusion, new models for leadership, and more.  From being a school teacher to a principal to an educational leadership coach, she really approaches these topics with heart and courage. Rachel tells stories about how she was a bit of an unlikely leader in this work, given her background from a small town in Texas, but was pushed by her students and life experiences to go deeper into her values and speak out.   We talk about courageous conversations, deeper listening, and how we can all do better.  She also breaks down the work of her company, SPARK for Humanity, and how it came to be born (even when she didn’t expect it).  And the “naked” moment she cried her eyes out while running a training in front of 250 school leaders… a moment that changed everything, and catalyzed her work. Rachel is incredibly bright and passionate, and another amazing example of how we can play bigger and make new choices. About Our Guest: Rachel is a seasoned facilitator, leadership coach, inclusion strategist, and speaker, and the Founder of SPARK For Humanity, the interactive, community-building card game where everyone belongs. As a Coach and Strategist, Rachel partners with influencers and helps them ensure that their communication and community-building approach is inclusive and intentional. Rachel helps her clients design and facilitate experiences for their diverse teams that allow them to unleash their potential to work together, build trust, and connect in meaningful ways. With a Masters from Stanford, a background in education, leadership development, and racial justice, Rachel is passionate about empowering influencers to lead with their S.P.A.R.K. and ignite positive shifts in the world. What we cover in this conversation: What inclusion really means for her and all of us Changing leadership to create a culture of belonging (and change the world) Geeking out on words and the power that they carry All the messages we get as women and how they box us in Taking intentional action, and what that’s all about How YOU can speak up and lead in “little” and big ways throughout your life Resources mentioned in this episode: To work with Rachel or get her SPARK card game, you can learn more here: www.rachelvrosen.com www.spark4humanity.com www.spark4leadership.com https://www.facebook.com/spark4humanity/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/1702656976653745/ https://www.instagram.com/spark4humanity/ https://www.instagram.com/spark4leadership/ Other resources mentioned are: Julian Weissglass National Equity Project http://www.stevezuieback.com/ More from ME: Come hang out in my FREE Facebook Community for deeper conversations and connections with other awesome women Ready for better relationships? Select the audio block from your post 2. In the audio block select “External” and put in the Blubbry URL you get from the Blubbry website after uploading your file there. 3. Put in the podcasting information on the Podcasting tab, for iTunes, medatadata etc THAT’s IT , it works for me and I get stats from the Blubrry website. Also, UPDATE YOUR WORDPRESS AND POWERPRESS! WordPress 4.4 update broke PowerPress - New update for PowerPress is out to fix the problem. The issue was with how WordPress dealt with feed titles. They would show as blank. Please update both WordPress AND PowerPress if you haven’t already. Also, if you updated PowerPress and not WordPress (and were using feature episode or FeedMaximizer) , you could have run into the same problem. One uses Dave's phone, and the other uses his phone (and iPhone 5) with the headset. The headset was slightly more "trebly". Dave was playing with the Auphonic smart phone app. This goes through Auphoinic that can level sounds, remove hiss, and more. It is also available on the Android. It then can be programmed to upload it automatically to Libsyn.com, Blubbry.com, Amazon S3, Dropbox (FTP, etc). It's pretty cool. You can add your meta data (ID3 tags) to your file right on your phone. There is a desktop app for the mac which speeds up the process (instead of being web based). Podertainment Magazine Podertainment will be a digital magazine in the iTunes newstand featuring articles by podcasters for podcasters. Currently we are waiting for Apple to approve the app. Was It Simpler Today than it Was Three Years Ago?[15:28] Yes. With great tools like the Audio Technica 2100 its super easy to get great audio quality. Expectations have changed. You can't just put crap out there and get people to listen. There is more competition. Dave mentions how when he first started he would record as an mp3, and edit, and edit and edit and the file would sound awful. (You want to record as a WAV file or AIFF) then mix down to mp3 when all the editing is done. The mixlr issue we are having is we get some clicking in the one channel. this has to do with the griffin imic usb device. Updates From Rich and His Private Podcast [24:35] Rich was able to get icatcher app that allows people to login and get his private podcast that he created using sharepoint. One thing you can do when you get a very long RSS feed location is put it through a URL shortener like pretty link lite for Wordpress.
